Chapter 161
"I'm so excited" said Kate and leaned over Sara on the couch. She kissed her softly before sitting down next to her. "Feeling a bit better?" she asked. "I was fine all along Kate" said Sara rolling her eyes. "Your BP was really low baby" said Kate. "Just a bit shocked. I've never had a girlfriend that carries medical equipment with her wherever she goes" said Sara rolling her eyes. "Whaaat…. It's my job to carry that around" said Kate. "Well… at least our baby will have somebody to clean up the scrapes and boo boos" said Sara. "Hmmm, no I think I may just lose it if it's my kid's blood" laughed Kate. "Well sorry, you don't have a choice" said Sara playfully. "I phoned Dr Montgomery. She said it's fine if we come in next week" said Kate. "Good. I want to have you all to myself for the next couple of days" said Sara. "Did you speak to Tegan?" asked Kate. "Yeah, apparently they had quite an eventful night but everything's fine" said Sara. "Eventful night? Why?" said Kate sitting up, looking nervous. "I don't know, everything's fine now" said Sara. "I better give them a call" said Kate. "Katie…. I told Tegan" said Sara. Kate just smiled and shook her head. "I kinda knew you would" she said. "I won't tell anybody else I promise" said Sara. "Can I tell Alex?" said Kate. "Of course you can. And then that's it okay" said Sara. "Deal" smiled Kate.
Tegan was all over the show in the specialist baby shop. She bought just about every gadget she could lay her hands on and forced Alex to do the same for their new baby. "You can never be too careful Alex, just get it" she told him. They were greeted outside by a ton of paps trying to get a story but Tegan had perfected the art of ignoring them in the last few months. Tegan dropped the bag of gadgets when she walked back into the door. "Where's my little angels?" she smiled. "We're over here…. Oh and the babies are sleeping in the bedroom" laughed Erin. "Did you leave them on that dodgy breathing mat?" said Tegan annoyed. "Tee the breathing mat is fine. One of the connections came loose that's why it was wailing this morning!" said Lindsey. "Not convinced" said Tegan walking to the baby room to go check on her kids. She returned a minute later holding Ryan. "Hey look who's awake" she said. "Did you wake him up Tegan?" said Lindsey with her hand in her sides. "No!" said Tegan looking guilty. "And there goes Casey" said Lindsey. Lindsey returned to the living room with Casey a minute later. Erin was going gaga over the babies. "You're going to have a little friend soon" she cooed. Tegan smiled wide and caught Alex's eye. He eyed her suspiciously before giving her a knowing smile back. "You know don't you" said Tegan. "Know what?" said Alex playing dumb. Tegan just smiled and cocked her head. "Okay, alright... It's pretty clear that we've all heard the good news" said Lindsey. "It's awesome right" said Alex. "Such great news" said Tegan. "Do you think it's too early though? They've only been together for a few months" said Alex. "When you know, you know Alex" said Erin. "Yup, I agree with Erin" said Tegan. "I know... those two are so perfect together. They're going to be great parents" said Alex holding Ryan. "We're going to have half a soccer team soon" said Lindsey. "Can't wait... they're going to drive us nuts" laughed Tegan.
Tegan's cellphone rang and she looked at the screen. "Speak of the devil" she said and answered. "Hello mom to be" said Tegan. Kate laughed. "Hello Tegan" she said. "Congratulations, we're so happy for you" said Tegan. "Thank you, we're over the moon" said Kate. Kate and Tegan made some more smalltalk before Kate got down to business. "Tell me what happened last night" she said. "Oh it's nothing... they just cried quite a bit" said Tegan. "Cried? Cried like how?" said Kate. "Cried you know" said Tegan. "Well, they're babies after all and that's what babies do" said Kate. "Uh huh" said Tegan. "You figure out why?" asked Kate. "Told you it was nothing" said Tegan sounding embarrassed. "Tee?" Kate pushed. "We didn't burp them after a feed and... yeah well I guess they had indigestion or something" said Tegan. "Oh... I wouldn't have even thought about that" said Kate. "Thought you knew everything" said Tegan. "No... not when it comes to burping babies" said Kate. "Don't worry, we'll teach you... God knows we'll be experts by the time yours arrives" said Tegan. "Thanks Tee" laughed Kate. "I swear I was about to rush them to the ER. Took their temperatures and everything" laughed Tegan. "How'd you figure it out?" asked Kate. "Ehemmm, called Sonia" said Tegan looking down to avoid the amused gazes of her friends. "Just glad they're okay" said Kate. "They're perfect, that stupid monitor started screaming this morning though" said Tegan. "Oh shit Tee... was everything okay?" asked Kate sounding worried. "Yeah false alarm, something came loose apparently. Anyway, I went and bought those expensive ones with the electrode. Not taking any chances" said Tegan. "The mats are usually pretty accurate Tegan" said Kate. "Yeah well... I don't want false alarms again so..." said Tegan. "That's understandable. You guys try and get some rest while they're sleeping okay" said Kate. "We'll try, but life goes on you know" said Tegan. "How are you feeling?" asked Kate. "I'm fine... no problems" said Tegan. Lindsey looked at her and shook her head. "Take it easy Tee" said Kate. "We will, enjoy your little romantic getaway" said Tegan. "Oh we will, talk to you later buddy" said Kate. "Bye K-dawg, thanks for the call" said Tegan and hung up.
"How's the movie going E?" asked Tegan. "Remind me to not make another movie when I'm pregnant" said Erin. Lindsey gave her a sympathetic look. "That being said, it's going great. We're almost done shooting. We'll be busy with post production soon. Hoping to have it done before this little one arrives" said Erin rubbing her belly. "Listen Erin... I know we owe you a soundtrack, it's just been really crazy as you know" said Tegan. "Tee... I understand completely. I want you two to take your time. I'm not in a rush to release this. We'll add the soundtrack when you're done. I'm not phased" said Erin. "Well hopefully we'll get into the swing of things soon and I can get to work. I know Sara's planning on starting soon too" said Tegan. "Sounds good. I trust you completely. Boy, she does have a good head of hair doesn't she" said Erin holding Casey's hands as she lay on her lap. "Yup, Quin genes... Can we see a rough cut of the film first so we can see what we have to work with? We're kinda new to this you know" said Tegan. "Of course you can, as soon as I have a rough draft ready you'll be the first to see it" said Erin. "Erin, take it easy okay. Take care of yourself and your little girl" said Tegan.
Kate and Sara spent the afternoon in Kate's little row boat on the lake. They lay silently in each other's arms looking at cloud formations. Kate eventually sat up and pulled Sara's floppy hat lower. "Cover up, we don't want to get sunburnt" she said handing Sara some sunscreen. "Awwww, you're in mommy mode already" said Sara. Kate laughed and shook her head. "Then again... you're always in mommy mode, taking care of everybody else" said Sara, admiration evident in her voice. Kate blushed and opened the picnic basket.
"Have you made a decision on changing specialities yet?" asked Sara. Kate sighed. "I've thought so long and hard about this. I do love what I do... and I know I make a difference but... now that I'm going to be a mom I want a bit more flexibility. The ICU is all consuming you know, and without even realising it you've spent 24 hours on your feet. You have every intention on going home and having a life but then... something always comes up" said Kate. "But... it's going to be the same in paeds babe" said Sara. "I know... but I have to make a decision to force myself to step away sometime... to go home... get some perspective. And maybe when I have a newborn at home that will be easier" said Kate. "Maybe" said Sara. "Also, I could go into private practice if I do paeds. There would still be emergencies but they would be much less frequent than if I work at the hospital full time. I want to be there for my kid Sara. I want to go to the soccer games and the recitals and the school plays. I don't want to be that mom that misses everything because I have to do an emergency triple bypass" said Kate looking confused. "I love you for that" smiled Sara. "I could always go into another kind of surgical speciality like electro cardio physiology. Those ops are usually scheduled way in advance and almost never after hours or on weekends" said Kate. "Yeah... but are you passionate about it?" asked Sara. "I don't think so" said Kate. "Katie, I want you to live your passion. Whatever you choose, we'll make it work okay" smiled Sara. "Thank you for being supportive Sara" said Kate. Sara gave her a sweet smile. "Whatever I choose, I'm cutting down on official hours. I have to, and I have to start realising that I'm not the only doctor in that hospital. Somebody else will be there to take over when I need to go. I have to do that. I want to spend as much time as possible with you" said Kate. "They'll let you do that Kate. You're their superstar. They know that and they'll do anything not to lose you to another hospital" said Sara. "You think so?" said Kate with a raised eyebrow. "Well you won't know if you don't try" said Sara. "I guess I have some time to figure it out before junior arrives" smiled Kate. "Yup, and I have a soundtrack to write... I lies before me like a mountain" said Sara. "Why are you so scared Sara?" asked Kate softly. "Because... I don't know if I can do it... I haven't written in so long... and never for something like a soundtrack. Oh it's nothing... I always feel like this before writing for a new record" said Sara. "It's going to be wonderful as always" said Kate. "It feels so fucking trivial and silly you know" said Sara. "Why? What do you mean?" asked Kate. "Here you are, saving lives every day like a super hero and I... well I write stupid songs" said Sara looking away. Kate leaned forward and took both of Sara's hands in hers. "Sara look at me" she whispered. Sara reluctantly turned her head to face Kate. "I don't think you realise how many lives you save with your music... It's like a magic drug you know. People find release in it, they find joy, they find healing in it... never, ever underestimate exactly how important that is" said Kate sincerely. Sara looked down shyly. "You're so incredibly talented and the world is a better place because you share that talent. I'm so proud of you. You're amazing" said Kate and kissed Sara's knuckles. Tears rolled down Sara's face when she looked back up. "What did I ever do to deserve you Kate Morgan" said Sara. "Well you were just your talented, sweet, smart, hot, beautiful, amazing self" said Kate. "You make me blush" said Sara. Kate smiled. "Let's eat, you need some extra calories now" she said and fed Sara a strawberry.
Tegan forced herself to sit down with her guitar after Alex and Erin left and the babies were sleeping again. She sat staring out in front of her for a while trying to remember details from Erin's script. "Hey you, made you some tea" said Lindsey. "Thanks babe. Are those new monitors working okay?" asked Tegan. "Like a charm" said Lindsey holding up the remote monitors showing their babies' breathing patterns. Tegan nodded approvingly. "How's the writing going?" asked Lindsey. "It's not" said Tegan sipping her tea. "Don't know where to start" said Tegan. "Just write anything... whatever comes into your mind. The rest will come" smiled Lindsey and ruffled Tegan's hair. "I just want to write about our babies" smiled Tegan. "Then do it" said Lindsey. "Yeah, maybe I just need something to get the creative juices flowing" said Tegan. "Sounds like a plan to me" said Lindsey. "Maybe I should write a kids album one day" said Tegan. Lindsey laughed. "One step at a time Boo" she said. "I wonder what this mommy thing is going to do to my cool, street cred" laughed Tegan. "The fans are loving this babe. When last did you check your social media pages. They're all super supportive" said Lindsey. "I guess I should give them more credit right. Anyway, look at Alecia, she's a mom and she rocks out like nobody's business" laughed Tegan. "Exactly! I'm going to leave you to get some writing done. I want do go download the photos I took this morning" said Lindsey. "Cool, email me some I need a new phone wallpaper" said Tegan.
Sara and Kate's relaxed, romantic day continued and they spent the night in front of the fireplace listening to the storm outside after Sara made them an amazing pasta dish for dinner. "I never want to leave this place" said Sara. "We can come back whenever you want to" smiled Kate. "It's so great to finally have so real, quality time together. No hospitals, no rehearsals. It's like we're in our own little cocoon" said Sara. "Hmmm, our own little love nest" joked Kate. "Speaking of which... apparently that pregnant woman get real hormonal... really horny you know" said Sara seductively. "Is that so? I thought they get over emotional and grow a big aversion to sex" joked Kate. "What kind of medical education do you have Doctor?" laughed Sara and straddled Kate's hips. She playfully pinned her wrists down over her head. "They also get really bossy and domineering... and their partners better give them exactly what they want" said Sara looking into Kate's eyes.
