"TeeTee!" said Sara excitedly and hugged her sister hello. Tegan took a walk up to Sara and Kate's house with the twins in the stroller and two security guards following short on heels. She wanted to give Lindsey a bit of alone time. "HiSar, how was your getaway?" asked Tegan. "Fantastic. Finally truly relaxed for the first time in months" said Sara. "Great, you really deserved a few days out of town" said Tegan. "You guys should go" said Tegan. "I'd love to but I don't think it's a good idea being away from civilisation with these two yet" said Tegan pointing the twin stroller with Casey and Ryan in. "How are my little angels?" said Sara and peeped in under the blankets. "They're awesome. Such little super stars. We're going to see the doctor for a check-uptomorrow but we've had no problems so far. They do cry a lot but frankly I'd rather have a crying, mad baby than a sick one" said Tegan. "Aweeee, so darn cute, when will they wake up?" asked Sara. "Shhhh…. Not yet pleeease! Probably in an about… 90 minutes or so" said Tegan looking at her watch and followed Sara into the house. "Where's Kate?" asked Tegan. "She's gone to pick up some groceries" said Sara while making Tegan some tea. "So…. Tell me all about your break" said Tegan sitting down on the couch. "Amazing. Not much else to say" smiled Sara. "Tell me about how you found out" said Tegan. "Um… well we… I peeded on the stick and wrapped it in a tissue and then we opened it next to the lake. I almost fainted and Kate was yelling like a maniac. It was hilarious… in hindsight" said Sara shaking her head. Tegan laughed. "Excited?" asked Tegan. "I'm so excited I can hardly breathe. This just feels so right. Everything about it. Kate is… she's my everything. Feels as if we've been together for 20 years… She… she gets me Tee… you're the only other person in the world that understands me like Kate does" said Sara. "Oh boy do you have it baaaad" laughed Tegan. Sara rolled her eyes. "Kidding Sar… I'm so happy for you both" said Tegan. "Thank you Tegan" smiled Sara. "So… how did you guys decide that you're going to carry?" asked Tegan. "Well… we were both kind of reluctant at first to tell you the truth but later we were actually both fighting to do it. Eventually we sat down, looked at the next year of our lives… made some lists of pros and cons and eventually we decided that I should carry this one. Kate will have the next one" said Sara. "Already talking about a next one!" laughed Tegan. "Well…. You know what I mean. Anyway. Kate's job is going to be quite demanding in the next few months. Her career is at a really important stage right now" said Sara. "No need to explain" said Tegan. "Fuck I'm so in love I can't see straight" smiled Sara. "I'm happy for you Sar… you deserve it" smiled Tegan.
Kate walked into the house positively glowing and relaxed. "Tegan!" she said and hugged Tegan tight. "How are you doing buddy?" asked Kate. "I'm good thanks, you look amazing. Few days of fresh air, sun and sex did you good" said Tegan winking. "Tegan! Shut the fuck up" said Sara blushing. "Hell yeah!" joked Kate and stretched her arms out over her head. "How are the munchkins?" she said peeping into the stroller. "Really good thanks" smiled Tegan. "Maybe I can give them a once over when they wake up" said Kate. "You think they need to be checked out?" said Tegan. "No but I miss my stethoscope" said Kate and shrugged and smiled. "Can't hurt" said Tegan. "Check out these cool monitors I got them" said Tegan. Kate picked it up and look at the readings on the phone sized devices. "Pretty cool" she said and looked at Sara. "We should get these babe" she said. "Sorry what?" said Sara who was lost in thought. "Anybody home?" asked Kate. "Just stolen away in a daydream" Sara smiled. "Those would be cool lyrics" said Tegan. "Hmmm…. Guess I better start writing soon" said Sara sounding annoyed. "I've started" said Tegan looking quite proud of herself. "Yeah? Can I hear it?" said Sara. "Not yet" said Tegan and changed the subject. "When are you going to see the OB?" asked Tegan. "We went this morning" smiled Sara and pulled an ultrasound picture out of her bag. "Can'treally see much yet but there she is… and there's her heartbeat" said Sara. "She?" asked Tegan frowning. "I just have a feeling" said Sara. "That's awesome Sar. Everything okay?" asked Tegan. "Yeah, everything's hundred percent" said Kate and gave Sara a peck on the cheek. "And how are YOU feeling Sara?" asked Tegan. "I feel great. Don't even have morning sickness" said Sara grinning. "Shhhh, don't jinx it" said Kate.
Tegan, Sara and Kate spent the next hour catching up before Casey made herself heard. "Yay! Somebody's awake" said Sara jumping up. "Casey" said Tegan. "How do you know?" asked Kate. "D'uh… They sound different" said Tegan. "Oh… they sound the same to me" laughed Sara. "That's because you haven't heard them scream as much as I have" said Tegan laughing. "I'm going to phone Linds to come over. Meals on wheels" said Tegan. "You better not let her hear you say that" said Kate giggling. "Kate, come, they're both awake you can have one" said Sara. "May we pick them up Tegan" asked Kate politely. Tegan had her feet on the coffee table and lay back looking tired. "Go for it! Please" she said. "Hey you two. It's your aunties" said Kate. "Yeah… you're favourite aunties I may add" said Sara giggling picking up a baby. "Can you guys check the diapers please? Or are you not emotionally ready for that yet?" asked Tegan laughing. "We can change a diaper or two Tegan" said Sara annoyed. "Let's take them into the bedroom, it's nice and sunny and warm so I can examine them after the diaper change" said Kate. Tegan jumped up. "Relax Tee we've got this" said Kate. "No I'm coming with" said Tegan fast.
Kate and Sara kind of awkwardly changed the diapers with Tegan lying on the bed laughing at them. "Okay… let's give you a little check-up" cooed Kate and opened up Ryan's crawler. Ryan didn't like that much and started getting fussy fast, moaning and kicking his legs around. "Hey kiddo… calm down big boy, I'm just going to listen to your heart" said Kate leaning over Ryan. Ryan's bottom lip was quivering now and started crying the next minute. "Mom's here Ryan. Don't worry it's just Katy…. okay honeybun here's your binky" said Tegan putting the pacifier in his mouth. "Binky?" said Sara laughing. "Yeah binky" said Tegan. "Your family has the weirdest little pet names for things" said Sara. "Haveyou never heard of a binky Sara?" asked Tegan annoyed.
"Okay guys quiet down please" said Kate and put the stethoscope she just warmed in her hand on Ryan's naked chest. She listened for quite a while and looked up with a smile. "Sounds great, the lungs seems to be developing just fine, heart sounds good" she said before palpating Ryan's abdomen. "Nice and soft, everything feels normal" said Kate. "Normal diapers Tee?" she asked. "Yup, lots of them too" said Tegan. Kate proceeded to check Ryan's blood pressure and temperature which was all normal. "Okay buddy here comes the nasty bit" said Kate. "What are you doing to him" asked Tegan protectively. "Juuuust going to have a look in his eyes with this torch" said Kate in an animated cartoon voice playing with Ryan's feet. Ryan pulled his face. "He smiled… did you see that he smiled" said Tegan. "Well… don't know if that can be called a smile but okay" said Sara. "He smiled! He so smiled" said Tegan laughing. Ryan made some cooing sounds. "Yeah Ryan, you tell her" said Kate. She clicked the pen torch on. "Here we go baby boy" she said and shone the torch into his pupils. Ryan immediately turned his head and started fussing. "Keep his head still for me" said Kate. "Do you have to do this… he doesn't like it" said Tegan but held Ryan's head still. The pupil checking had Ryan mad in no time and he was now crying his eyes out. "Sorry dude" said Kate. "Oh there we go, thanks Doctor" said Tegan sarcastically. "Can I check his glucose real quick" said Tegan. "No that's the sore one where you prick his heel?…No… we're going for the check up tomorrow. He's fine" said Tegan picking Ryan up and trying to soothe him. "Oh alright then stop freaking out" said Kate. "Not freaking out" said Tegan. "Uh huh" said Kate and proceeded to examine Casey.
Lindsey was there a few minutes later to feed the babies. "You guys try expressing and bottle feeding yet?" asked Kate. "We were thinking that we'll try next week?" said Tegan. "Yeah leave it till next week, they're going to be a bit fussy after those immunisations tomorrow guys" said Kate. "Poor things… that must hurt so much. Such big needles in such little legs" said Sara. Tegan put her hands over her ears and started saying "La la la la la la" over and over to not hear. "They're going to be fine though Tee, babies have them all the time" laughed Kate once Tegan removed her hands. "I know, but it's going to break my heart" said Tegan.
5 days later
"Morning Tegan, how are my little monkeys doing this morning?" asked Kate as she walked into Tegan's living room. "They're so much better, getting back to their old selves again" smiled Tegan before giving a massive yawn. The babies got a really good report card from the paediatrician but had been in a bad space for the last few days after their immunisations. Both had a fever for a day or two, slept horrible and cried a lot, obviously not feeling well. Tegan and Lindsey were both in a state. "I on the other hand… am beat" laughed Tegan bouncing Casey around. "Hey cutie! Come to Sara" cooed Sara. "Hey little pretty one… you're going to be getting a cousin… yeah, a cousin!" said Kate touching Casey's cheeks. "Oh my gosh these outfits are awesome" laughed Sara. They were both so broody these days and they just adored Casey and Ryan. "Hold her for a sec" said Sara suddenly looking pale. "You okay babe?" asked Kate. "Sure just… give me a minute" said Sara and sat down at the kitchen counter with her head in her hand. "Sara?" asked Kate again handing Casey back to Tegan. "I'm okay, just a bit dizzy suddenly" said Sara. "Here you go babe have some water" said Kate. "I'm fine sweetie really, just a bit of a head rush" smiled Sara shaking her head. "I don't like this, come lie down for a minute" said Tegan. "I'm fine okay… Kate can we maybe… go home I'm feeling a bit nauseous" said Sara. "Morning sickness finally kick in?" asked Tegan. "Yup" said Sara getting up slowly. She suddenly had her hand in front of her mouth and started running to the bathroom. Sheunfortunately didn't make it on time and vomited all over Tegan's hallway. "Oh honey… oh shit… I'm sorry, come on let's get you cleaned up" said Kate and led Sara into the bathroom. Tegan looked at Lindsey with raised eyebrows as she heard Sara heave again. "I'll get the mop" said Tegan.
