Chapter 171
"What?" asked Kate confused. "Well I either peed my pants or my water just broke" said Sara. "Um… Okay… just relax, everything's okay. Come on, sit down" said Kate. "No it's not okay… Kate… let's get in the car and get to a hospital" said Sara. "Baby just sit down for me and take a few deep breaths" said Kate looking as if she'd seen a ghost. "I had 2 contractions Kate" said Sara. "How far apart were they Sar?" asked Kate helping Sara lie back. "I don't know, a couple of minutes" said Sara. Kate nodded. "Tegan!" she yelled out of the door. Tegan came marching into the room looking pissed off. "Can you two shut up, sleeping babies remember" said Tegan. "Tee… I think I'm in labour" said Sara. "Oh fuck" said Tegan loudly. "Sorry" she mumbled.
"Tegan just go get my bag in the living room please" said Kate. Tegan just about sprinted out of the room. "We need to go babe" said Sara. "No I need to check how far along you are Sara. Then we'll devise a plan of action" said Kate. "Ahhh… dammit" Tegan yelled when coming around the corner. She dropped the bag and jumped around clutching her foot. "What's wrong?" asked Kate taking the bag from Tegan. "Stubbed my toe. It's fucking dark" mumbled Tegan. Lindsey walked in behind Tegan. "Linds, why don't you go sit Tegan down in the living room and put a band aid and some ice on that toe" said Kate. "I'm staying" said Tegan. "Tee, right now I'm just going to examine her to see where we stand. I promise we'll call you if we need you" said Kate. "Ugh…. Go Tegan" said Sara.
Kate's hands were shaking as she pulled on some latex gloves. "Kate… I'm in labour right… because if your water breaks that means you're in labour right" Sara rambled sounding petrified. "Sara calm down! Yes, I'm guessing you're in labour but that can take hours. I mean, Erin was in labour for like 25 hours" said Kate. "Yeah and some people are in labour for an hour" said Sara. "Been Googling again?" joked Kate. "It's so not funny Kate" said Sara. "I know, I'm sorry" said Kate.
"It's too early, too early" said Sara. "Honey, it's not that early. 37 and a half weeks is perfectly fine. It's fine... really" said Kate and put the BP cuff around Sara's arm and pressed a button. She put her stethoscope in her ears and listened to Sara belly. "There she is. Nice strong heartbeat" smiled Kate. "So we can go" said Sara. "Hold on babe" said Kate. "I'm just going to check how far dilated you are" said Kate. "Noooo, Katy no…. I don't want you doing that" said Sara. "Sara, I have to" said Kate and started removing Sara's pants. Sara was suddenly in tears. "It's okay baby, it's okay" Kate kept cooing as she put her head between Sara's legs and put two fingers into her. "Uh… you're already about five centimetres dilated Sar. This baby is coming and she's coming soon" said Kate. Sara doubled over as another cramp hit her. "We can't do this here" said Sara with gritted teeth. "Sure we can. There we go, just breathe through it" said Kate. "No… we need Addison or the midwife or somebody that can deliver this baby" said Sara in tears. "I know how to deliver a baby Sar, trust me it's going to be fine" said Kate. "I don't want you delivering this baby, you're never going to want to look down there again" said Sara in tears. "Oh I will, trust me" laughed Kate. "No… this is dangerous" said Sara. "We were planning a home birth anyway. It's just going to happen in a different home" said Kate. "You don't have all the stuff you need" said Sara. "I have enough in my bag" said Kate.
Tegan came limping into the room. "What's happening?" she asked looking nervous. "Looks like you're going to be an aunt sooner than anticipated Tee" said Kate. "Sara was still bawling her eyes out. "Sasa… hey it's okay… you're going to be okay" said Tegan sitting down next to Sara. "Lindsey, would you mind getting us some clean towels and boil some water" asked Kate. "What? You're having it here?" asked Tegan. "Don't really have a choice Tegan. We don't have time" said Kate. "But" said Tegan. "Tegan, she either has the baby here, in bed, where I can control what happens or she has it on the side of the road in the middle of a rainstorm" said Kate. Tegan nodded looking pale. Kate checked Sara's BP again. "I want you holding my hand not stretching my vagina" cried Sara. Tegan gave a nervous, stifled laugh. "Sar, listen to me baby…. Calm down, deep breath, listen to me" said Kate softly while holding Sara's hands. "This is happening… soon. Either I deliver this baby, or…. or Tegan does" said Kate. "What the fuck" said Tegan loudly with her hands in the air. Kate laughed. "Funny" said Sara dryly and stared at Kate. "You can do this" said Kate. "We can do this" said Sara as Kate put her forehead onto hers. "Aaaaahhhhh another one" said Sara.
"Hey can I speak to Dr Montgomery" said Kate into her cell phone after Sara's contraction subsided. The thunder roared outside. "I said can I speak to Dr Montgomery" said Kate louder. "It's Dr Morgan…. Surgery? When will she be done?... Um… could you please tell her to phone Kate urgently…. Yeah, Dr Morgan. Please, it's urgent" said Kate and hung up. "Kate why do you need her?" asked Sara. "I don't… just want to talk to her about it" said Kate. "Just call 911" said Tegan looking terrified. "I'm not sending my wife and child in an ambulance in this weather. It will take them forever to get here in this weather anyway, it will be all over by the time they get here" said Kate. "Yeah but Kate" said Tegan. "Tegan, no buts… please. There's no time for an ambulance. I need you to trust me right now. You know I'll do whatever I think is best for Sara and the baby" said Kate. "Okay, okay, I trust you" said Tegan. "Katy another one" said Sara loudly and grinded her teeth.
"Okay let's get you ready" smiled Kate. She had never been more scared to perform a medical procedure in her life but she tried to act as calm as possible for Sara's sake. She put some towels under Sara as Tegan and Lindsey tried to get more light into the room. "Oh god another one, please make it stop" yelled Sara as Kate held her tight. "It's okay babe, there we go... breathe through it. You've got it" said Kate holding Sara. "Sara I'm going to check your cervix again. Everything's okay" said Kate and moved to the end of the bed and opened Sara's legs sitting on a stool in front of the bed. Sara had her arm over her eyes, in tears. "Sar…. I'm here. Hold my hand" said Tegan softly.
"Linds, can I have a bit more light please" said Kate. "Oh god this is embarrassing" mumbled Sara. "I'm not looking Sar" said Lindsey looking away while holding a torch. "Obviously not, you're pointing it in the complete wrong spot" said Kate and moved the torch in Lindsey's hands. She felt around with her eyes closed. "Eager little beaver, you're 8cm dilated" said Kate. "Excuse the pun" said Tegan and rolled her eyes. "Shut the fuck up Tegan" exclaimed Sara. "Yeah yeah" laughed Tegan.
Lindsey swiftly made a plan to hold the torches in place by taping them to some chairs. "Sara…. Sweetie, lucky thing I have a couple of saline IVs in the bag. I'm going to cannulate you now to keep your fluids up" said Kate. "Whatever…. Just want this over with" complained Sara. Kate pressed the BP button again before starting on Sara's IV. "BPs looking just fine" said Kate and kissed Sara's knuckles. Kate put her stethoscope back onto Sara's belly and looked at her watch. "Bambino's heart rate is good. She's okay" smiled Kate. "I'm scared… I'm so scared Katy" said Sara softly. "I know… it's a big day right! Shhh…. Everything's okay. I've got you….. I've got you! I love you so much" said Kate holding Sara's hand to her cheek. "I lo…. O jeez another one" exclaimed Sara.
Just as the contraction subsided Kate's cell phone rang. "Addison…. Sara's in labour" said Kate into the phone. "No… we're pretty much trapped at the cabin, major storm outside. Sara's very stable… she's about 9cm right now but it's going really fast…. I have my bag with me with limited medical supplies but It should be sufficient….. uh huh…. Yeah….. okay….. yes I'm listening….. okay… Yes doctor, I have delivered a couple of babies in my life. This isn't my first rodeo" Kate spoke on the phone pacing around. "Alright thanks Addy…. Yeah of course I'll call if I need you. See you tomorrow hopefully…. I'm going to be a mom!" said Kate.
"Tegan, can I have a word outside" said Kate. "No don't go, please don't go" said Sara. "Lindsey's right here with you. We'll just be a minute" said Kate. "Tegan, how well do you remember those Lamaze moves buddy? Sara needs a birthing partner" said Kate outside in the hallway. "Um… you're here" said Tegan. "Yeah, I'm here, but I'm going to be elbow deep in placenta down there. Tee… I need you with Sara. I need you to keep her calm. I need you to support her back, I need you to hold her hand because I won't be able to…. Please Tegan" said Kate, her eyes pleading in the torch light. "Okay" said Tegan softly and nodded. Tegan suddenly vividly remembered the ordeal she and Lindsey had in the delivery room. "Tegan, I've got this buddy" said Kate. She turned to walk back into the room. Lindsey had lit just about every candle she could find in the house, there were many! She placed them all around the bedroom. It gave a beautiful, relaxed atmosphere. Lindsey sat on the edge of the bed next to Sara and held her hand and wiped her forehead with a wet cloth. "Thanks Linds" whispered Sara.
"Okay baby, you're almost fully dilated now. I want you to take a couple of nice, deep breaths with me. Everything's going to be just fine. Okay here we go" said Kate holding Sara's hands before breathing in deep looking into Sara's eyes. Sara and Kate repeated this a few times before Kate smiled. "I love you! Let's have a baby" she said and kissed Sara's forehead.
