Chapter 172

"You ready Tegan?" asked Kate. "Yup" said Tegan looking scared. "Ready for what?" asked Sara. "Meet your new birthing partner" said Kate and winked at Sara. "You're kidding?" said Sara. "Honey, I'm going to be just a bit busy. But don't worry, I'm right here" said Kate packing out the contents of her bag. "Linds, I'm going to need you to be my nurse. Please go get a few of those clips in the kitchen that seals plastic bags. I need you to put those clips and these scissors in a pot and boil it for five minutes" said Kate. "You got it" said Lindsey and left the room.

Tegan stood next to the bed looking uncertain of what to do. "Well Tee, what are you waiting for" said Kate. "Um…" said Tegan. "Get in behind her Tee, put your legs around her and let her lean back into you" said Kate. "Fuck" mumbled Tegan but made her way in behind Sara. She touched her awkwardly. "I'm sorry" she said quickly. "Time to put your silly sister issues behind you girls" said Kate. "Oh god here we go again" said Sara and grabbed Tegan's hand. "Okay Sar, just breath through it, you can do it" said Tegan holding onto Sara's shoulder with her other hand. "I need drugs… give me drugs babe. I need something for the pain" breathed Sara. Tegan grabbed a wet facecloth and wiped Sara's face. "Sorry sweetie, I don't have the right drugs here" said Kate. "You're just going to have to model through it Sar" said Tegan. "Tegan I swear if you don't stop with your jokes I'm going to puke all over you" said Sara. "Alright already, zipping my mouth" said Tegan.

The contractions kept coming and Sara was in agony. "Fuck me" she breathed after a particularly bad one. "Not right now honey, kind of busy" joked Kate. "Funny asshole" said Sara with her arm over her eyes. Kate was busy checking something between Sara's legs. "Pull your legs up Sara. Lindsey, help her pull her legs up. Okay Sar. I can see the head. This is it, push honey" said Kate with her fingers inside of Sara. "Push Sar, there we go, push…. You're doing great Sar" said Tegan. "Okay Sar stop pushing…. Stop pushing babe" said Kate. Sara was drenched in sweat and leaned back against Tegan's shoulder panting. "Deep breaths now Sar" said Tegan rubbing Sara's arms up and down. "Holy shit this hurts" breathed Sara. "Everything's okay honey… you're doing so well. Don't push Sar… even if you feel the urge to push…. Don't push you wait for the contraction okay" said Kate. "Good job Sar, good job" said Tegan into Sara's ear. "Aaaaghhh" yelled Sara a minute later. "Okay Sara push…. That's it…. Come on babe" encouraged Kate. "Breathe Sara, you know the drill. In, in, oooout" said Tegan. Sara just about squeezed all the blood from Tegan's hand.

"Got your tools doc" said Lindsey entering with a pot. "Thanks Linds, Do me a favour and press the button on the BP monitor" said Kate with her head still between Sara's legs. Lindsey did as instructed. "It's 105 over 85 Kate" she reported. "That's just fine babe" said Kate. She put her stethoscope on Sara's belly and moved it around a bit with a concerned expression on her face. "Kate? Kate what's wrong?... Kate talk to me" said Sara frantically. "Everything's okay, her heart rate is down a bit but she's not in distress yet. Just calm down Sar" said Kate. "Deep breaths Sara" instructed Tegan. Sara looked down and saw blood and mucus. "The bed… messed up" she mumbled. "Fuck the bed Sar, it's uncomfortable anyway…. We'll get a new bed…. Okay here we go push…. You're almost there" said Kate. Sara pushed again. "Keep pushing Sar, ten seconds babe… there we go you've got it. Biiiig push... 5, 4, 3" Kate counted slowly. "I can't… I can't" panted Sara. "Yes you can" said Tegan into her sister's ear. "You can do this Sara. You're amazing Sar… almost over sis" said Tegan rubbing Sara's arms.

"Stop pushing hon" said Kate. "How much more?" mumbled Sara. "One or two more pushes babe… you're doing great" said Kate busy working. She popped her head up for a second. "Hey Sara" she said. "What?" said Sara sounding annoyed and tired. "I love you" smiled Kate. Sara smiled weakly. "I love you too… but I would love you even more if you got this baby out already…. ahhhhh" said Sara as another contraction hit. "Push Sar, there we go puuuush" encouraged Kate. "I'm pushing!" said Sara loudly. "Almost there babe…. Okay honey here comes the head keep pushing for me" said Kate out of breath. "Stop pushing" said Kate and wiped her forehead with the back of her arm. Sara fell back against Tegan's chest breathing heavily. "Linds, check her BP please" said Kate.

"100 over 75" reported Lindsey. "Linds, open that drip wide please" said Kate. "Is she okay?" asked Tegan sounding scared. "Sure, she's fine. Almost ready for the next one Sar?" said Kate. Sara didn't reply "Kate, Sara's wheezing" said Tegan. "Sar? Babe? Deep breath" said Kate. Sara just nodded with her eyes closed trying to compose herself. "Tegan, your inhaler" said Kate. Tegan dug around in her pocket to find her inhaler. She still had to carry it around every second of the day. "Here we go Sar, deep breath in" said Tegan holding the inhaler to Sara's mouth. "Another one" said Kate listening to Sara's chest. Tegan gave her another puff just before the next contraction hit. Tegan took a hit of the inhaler herself. "Here we go Sara... big push" she said. "Okay Sar almost there babe" said Kate. Sara looked drained and weak. "Big push Sar, come on, here comes the head babe" said Kate now sounding quite serious. "You've got it Sar, Quin for the win... push" said Tegan. Sara's face contracted in pain. "Yeah that's it babe… here she comes, her head is out. Oooohhh she's beautiful! Lindsey, suction bulb" barked Kate. Lindsey handed her the device and Kate sucked something out of the baby's mouth. "Okay Sar, last bit, keep pushing... Shoulders are out" shouted Kate. "Ahhh yelled Sara and dug her nails into Tegan's thigh"

The next second Kate pulled a baby with a head of dark hair out. "It's a beautiful baby girl! Lindsey, mark the time please" she exclaimed. Sara broke down in tears with her head on Tegan's shoulder. "Congratulations guys" said Tegan. "Time is 10.11 pm. Congratulations" grinned Lindsey. The baby lay on her stomach in Kate's hand, she gave her a light pat on the behind. "Come on, give us a cry" said Kate. She rubbed her back. The baby in Kate's hands started screaming her lungs out. "Nice set of lungs she has on her" said Tegan. "Is she okay?" asked Sara sounding drained. Kate nodded looking speechless.

"Open your shirt Sar" said Tegan. Sara did as instructed and unclipped her bra. Kate gently lay the baby down on Sara's chest and dried her off with a towel. She suctioned some more gunk out of her mouth. "Our daughter" smiled Kate. "Hey little one, hi…. You're so gorgeous. So you're the one that's been kicking me" whispered Sara holding the baby's hand. The baby stopped crying and looked around a bit. "Welcome to the world baby girl" said Kate.

Sara turned her head and looked at Kate. "Amelia?" whispered Sara. Kate smiled and nodded. "Everyone, please meet our daughter. Amelia Rain Quin Morgan" said Sara. "That's beautiful, what a fitting second name" laughed Lindsey and pointed outside. Tegan was quiet and bit her bottom lip trying to keep her emotions in check. "Fitting tribute to the strongest person we know. To the aunt that carries the same DNA. The aunt that helped bring her into the world. Her godmother" said Sara still panting. Tegan couldn't keep it in a second longer and let out a large sob. This gesture of having her twin and her friend's first born share Tegan's second name meant more to her than words could say. "Thank you" she whispered. "That's so special… thank you" she repeated. "Well deserved Tegan" smiled Kate. "Lindsey…. BP please" said Kate. She put her stethoscope on the baby's chest and listened for a minute. "Heart rate's perfect, all sounds normal…. Breath sounds clear and strong. Apgar score is 9. Are you feeling okay Sara? Breathing better?" asked Kate. "I'm fine... Thank you Katy... thank you" breathed Sara. "I love you" said Kate. "I love you so incredibly much" said Sara.

"Look at her, she's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen" whispered Sara in tears. "She's gorgeous" said Tegan still sitting behind Sara. Kate was teary and kissed Sara's cheek while holding Amelia's tiny hand. "I have to cut the umbilical cord now" said Kate. "Lindsey, clip please" said Kate and held her hand out. Kate swiftly drew two tubes of blood from the cord for later tests and then put two clamps close to each other on the cord and cut between the two. Sara didn't take her eyes off her baby for a second. "My little angel, you're so perfect. Hi Amelia…. Hi baby" said Sara softly. "There we go, all done" smiled Kate.

"Honey, you have to deliver the placenta now" said Kate gently. Sara didn't reply, still completely infatuated with her little girl. "Sara, sweetie?" said Kate. "Yeah okay, placenta" smiled Sara looking up. Kate smiled. "Can I keep holding her?" asked Sara. "For now yes, let's just get her nice and warm under this towel" said Kate. "Alright, this is probably just going to feel like some heavy menstruation cramps… sure you won't even feel it looking into those beautiful eyes" said Kate. Sara just smiled at her baby. "She's perfect Kate" she kept repeating. "She sure is" said Kate. "So beautiful" cooed Sara. "I'm going to put my hand below your navel and press down and massage a little. Should move things along a bit and get your uterus to contract normally" said Kate calmly with her hand on Sara's belly. Tegan swallowed hard and swiftly but nervously looked at Lindsey. She almost lost Lindsey when she gave birth to their twins and bled out due to a uterus that didn't contract. Lindsey smiled a reassuring smile. "Linds, BP please. And can you repeat the reading every five minutes" said Kate. "Going up it seems, 105 over 85" said Lindsey. "All those feel good hormones being released" said Kate while working.

Sara gave a couple of moans but didn't pay too much attention to the placenta being delivered. She kept looking at her baby girl, tears kept flowing down her cheeks. "Good job babe! One placenta delivered perfectly intact" said Kate and gently put Sara's legs down. Sara sighed with relief. "Kate look at her… look at the movements she's making with her mouth" said Sara. "So incredibly cute" said Kate and touched her hand.

Kate looked drained but so proud. She finally pulled her gloves off and sat down next to Sara. "May I be excused? I'm bursting" said Tegan still trapped behind Sara. "Sure Tee, thank you" said Kate. Tegan climbed out behind Sara. "Hey Tegan" said Sara finally looking up from her daughter. "Thank you. Don't think I could have done it without you" said Sara. "Oh you would have been fine…. But it's my pleasure. It was such an honour to be part of this" smiled Tegan standing with her legs crossed. Sara laughed. "Have…. To…. Go" said Tegan pointing down and jumped out of the room.

Sara turned her face to Kate. "Finally, you're sitting still… my hero" said Sara. Kate smiled. "You were incredible Sara. I'm so proud of you" said Kate. "No you were incredible…. Delivering a baby, just like that. You are amazing Kate…. Amazing" said Sara and kissed Kate. Kate looked down at the angelic little face in front of her. "She's so beautiful….. Amelia… little Ami" she whispered and lightly touched her dark hair. The baby seemed to be drowsy, her eyes slowly closing. "She's just taking a power nap, she'll wake up again in a couple of minutes" said Kate softly.

The rain outside was now soft and gentle and the lights flickered back on. "Can we keep them off?" asked Sara softly. "Sure" said Kate and Lindsey switched the lights in the room back off returning to the gentle glow of the candle light on their faces. "Storm seems to be over" said Kate. "Thank goodness" said Sara. "You sure had a lot of fanfare for your entrance little one" said Kate.

"Lindsey" said Kate softly. "Can you do me a favour and call that ambulance now" said Kate calmly. "No but…. Can't we just stay here" asked Sara. "Sweetie, everything seems to be okay but I really want my girls to be checked out at the hospital" said Kate. "But you said the ambulance can't get here" said Sara. "No, I said the ambulance wouldn't get here in time in the storm. Storm's pretty much over and the emergency's over too" said Kate. "We're both fine though" said Sara. "Yeah, but please Sar, I'm worried about that little asthma attack you had" said Kate. "It's nothing... Haven't had one of those in years" said Sara. "Yeah but you had one now. Probably just all the excitement but we need to make sure okay" said Kate. "Please Sara…. Let's just make sure you two are okay" said Tegan. "Okay…. Kate did use kitchen tools to clamp the umbilical cord after all" said Sara. "And Amelia doesn't have anything to wear!" said Tegan.

After a few minutes of bliss, both mommies just staring at their daughter in awe, the baby woke up again. Kate gently put her on her stomach on Sara's chest. "Watch this. It's called the breast crawl" said Kate. Amelia moved her head around and moved up using her arms. "She looks pretty confused" giggled Sara. "Give it a sec" said Kate. Her head moved towards Sara's nipple. After a bit of a struggle she had Sara's nipple in her mouth and awkwardly started sucking. Sara was in tears again at the sheer majesty of what she was experiencing right now. "Amazing" whispered Sara. "She must be pretty hungry after all that action" said Kate. "You go girl! The sooner the better" said Kate. "I'm so in love" said Sara with her hand on Amelia's back. "So am I…. this is best day of my life" said Kate and kissed Sara's cheek.

"Tegan, call mom please" said Sara. "Sure, you want to talk to her?" asked Tegan. "No, you give her the good news. I've got my hands full" smiled Sara. "Mom... Mom" rambled Tegan. "Sorry for waking you... yes I'm fine Mom... MOM! Calm down! Congratulations... you're a grandmother again... to a perfect, gorgeous little girl" said Tegan. Tegan held the phone away from her ear as Sonia freaked out on the other side. "We told you so by the way... that it's a girl" said Sara softly. Kate smiled. "She's fine mom... she's busy breastfeeding so she asked me to call... She'll speak to you later. Yeah baby's fine... she's perfect. It was quite eventful, we're at the cabin, trapped in a storm... No mom, it's fine... really, it's fine... Mom, Kate's a paediatrician for God's sake! She delivered her like the pro she is... Yes Mom! ... It's okay, the ambulance is on it's way... Oh sorry, almost forgot... her name is Amelia... Amelia Rain Quin Morgan... I know it's a mouthful right... can you believe they gave her my middle name... I'm so excited. Okay mom, I'll send them your love. See you soon... Love you too" said Tegan and hung up. "She sends her love and congratulations... she's freaking out! Said she'll phone the dads and she's flying to LA in the morning" said Tegan grinning. "You want to phone your family baby?" Sara asked Kate. "I'll phone them later. Right now I just want to admire my two girls" smiled Kate.

A few minutes later they heard a loud knock on the door. "Ambulance service" somebody shouted. Lindsey led the two ambulance officers in. "Hi guys... you're a bit late to the party" said Kate. "Wow... what happened here" asked the girl. "Sara had a baby" smiled Tegan. "Who delivered it?" asked the girl sounding nervous as she swiftly opened her bag. "I did" said Kate. "How?... jeez... congratulations" said the girl and listened to Amelia's chest with a stethoscope. "Oh relax, she's a doctor" said Lindsey. With that one of the twins started crying. "I've got it Tegan... stay here" said Lindsey. "Pete let's give baby a bit of oxygen. Good job on the cord" said the girl. "Thanks! Check Sara's pulse ox for me please" said Kate. "95%" reported the girl. "Baby's sats are looking good. 99 percent" said the guy. "Let's give mom some oxygen and get her on a monitor. We may need to nebulise in the rig. I want her on another bag of saline" said Kate. The girl put a oxygen tube in front of Amelia's face. "There we go, just a bit of fresh air" she cooed as the guy put an oxygen mask on Sara's face. They soon had the heart monitor connected to Sara. "Post patrum bleeding under control doc?" asked the guy. "Yeah, so far so good. Placenta was delivered intact without complications" said Kate looking at the monitor screen.

"Okay, everybody's stable and ready to move" said the ambulance officer. Sara pulled the mask away from her face. "Tee... you guys stay here. Don't bring the babies out" said Sara. "But Sar..." said Tegan. "Tee... everything's fine. You guys get some rest, we'll see you in the morning" said Sara. "Okay Sar... put this back on" said Tegan and put the mask back on Sara's face. Sara smiled and nodded. "I'm so fucking proud of you" said Tegan softly. "Love you Teetee" said Sara and smiled. "Love you too Sasa" said Tegan. "I'm just going to take her for a minute while they move you onto the gurney sweetie" said Kate. "Oh... Okay" mumbled Sara. "Sara, can I carry her to the ambulance? It will be safer... you can hold her again once we're travelling" said Kate. "Of course you can mommy Kate, walk carefully though" smiled Sara. The ambulance officers gave each other a puzzled look.

The ambulance officers soon had Sara on the gurney and covered with some blankets. They started pushing her out of the cabin. Sara's eyes rolled in her head. "Sara! Baby stay with me... Sar are you okay?" said Kate sounding panicked. She looked at the monitor. "Yeah... I'm fine... just so, so tired... cold" mumbled Sara under the oxygen mask. "Check her pressure" said Kate. "95 over 70" reported the girl. "Okay let's move guys, it's dropping" said Kate. "Kate? Is she okay, should I come with?" asked Tegan. "She's okay Tee... stay here with the babies. I'll call you as soon as we're settled at the hospital" said Kate. "Okay" said Tegan softly and let go of Sara's hand. "Go, go" said Kate softly but urgently.
