Chapter 173
Kate held baby Amelia close to her chest and covered her in more towels before moving outside. "Mommy's here baby girl" she whispered. "Sar, sweetie… you okay there?" asked Kate. "I'm good hon" said Sara under the oxygen mask and gave a thumbs up as they pushed her into the ambulance. "Would you like to hold her Sara?" asked Kate as the ambulance pulled away. "I would love to but I think it's safer if you hold her. I'm feeling a bit wobbly" said Sara. "Okay sweetie" said Kate kindly. "BP" she said urgently turning her head to the ambulance officer. The girl inflated the BP cuff. "BPs okay, 105 over 75. Pulse ox looking good at 98%" she said. "BP is a bit choppy, up and down but you're going to be fine honey" said Kate and kissed Sara's hand.
A few minutes later the ambulance pulled up in front of the hospital. "Thanks m'am, we'll take her now" said a nurse as they entered the ER. "No, I've got her" said Kate and turned the baby away. "It's okay, we'll take good care of her" said the nurse. "I said I've got her" said Kate. Sara was pushed into a cubicle and the curtains drawn as a junior looking doctor entered. "Ms… Quin. I'm Dr Smith" he smiled. Kate gave him a dirty look. "How old are you... fifteen" mumbled Kate. "Sorry?" said the doctor. "Nothing" said Kate. "How are you feeling?" he asked Sara. "Happy, tired" said Sara. "Okay, we're just going to check you and your little boy out real quick" said the doctor. "It's a girl" said Kate looking annoyed. "Oh I'm sorry. You can wait outside, we'll only be a few minutes" said the doctor. "I think I'll stay thanks" said Kate. "Sorry Miss?" he said with a question in his voice. "Morgan" said Kate. "Ms Morgan, your friend will be fine. Perhaps you can go call Sara's husband" said the doctor. Kate bit her lip as Sara giggled. "It's okay, I want her here" said Sara playing along with Kate. "Useless bastard of a man" said Kate. "Oh... okay" mumbled the doctor. The doctor examined Sara and relayed information as if he was talking to a five year old, explaining every little thing he did. "So Sara, the ambo tells me you luckily had a doctor there to deliver your baby" said the young doctor. "Sure did" said Sara. "Sorry Doctor, you may want to check Sara's lungs. She had a mild asthma attack earlier" said Kate. "M'am, I see that on my notes here. I will get to that" said the doctor. "Just saying, in case it wasn't on the notes" said Kate bouncing the baby up and down softly. "Just let me do my job miss" said the doctor.
The curtain pulled back and a male, obviously more senior doctor entered. "Dr Morgan! I'll be damned" he said. "Aaron! It's so good to see you" smiled Kate. "I'd hug you hello but I see you're holding what must be your beautiful daughter" said Aaron. Kate nodded. "Aaron please meet my fiance Sara... and our gorgeous little girl Amelia" said Kate proudly. The intern swallowed hard looking as if he'd seen a ghost. "Hi Sara it's great to meet you. How are you feeling?" asked Aaron. "I'm okay, just a bit tired obviously, and a little sore" said Sara. "I see that obstetrics rotation we did together as interns really paid off Kate" said Aaron starting to examine Sara. "I guess" mumbled Kate. "Dr Smith. Care to share your findings?" asked Aaron. "Um" said the intern. "Dr Smith is our ER intern. I'm sorry I was a few minutes late down here, had a caesarian to wrap up in theatre" said Aaron. "I... I'm really sorry Dr Morgan... I didn't realise... um... good job on the delivery" said the intern. "Oh no... what did you do Guppy" said Aaron. "It's fine, I guess that was a cruel joke. One with a lesson though... thorough patient history" winked Kate. "S... sorry" mumbled the intern. "Dr Morgan here happens to be one of the best doctors in the country Guppy... you can learn a lot from her" said Aaron. "He's exaggerating" said Kate rolling her eyes. "I'm not, you're just modest" said Aaron.
Another doctor entered a minute later. "Hi, we're just going to take little Amelia for a couple of tests and to get her cleaned up, we'll have her back with you in no time Sara" said the nurse. "Go with her Kate, I'm fine" said Sara. "Are you sure sweetie?" said Kate still holding Amelia. Sara smiled and nodded. "I can stay" said Kate. "I want you with Amelia please... I want her to have her mommy with her" said Sara. "Go Kate, Sara is stable and she's doing well. I'll take good care of her" said Aaron. "Okay... love you" said Kate and kissed Sara's forehead. "Take photos" said Sara.
Kate put Amelia down on a radiant warmer. She pulled her stethoscope from her pocket. "We've got her... it's okay" said the nurse. "I'm a pediatrician" said Kate. "Okay... well in that case go right ahead" said the nurse. Kate listened to Amelia's chest while the other doctor did a couple of tests. "You've got a very happy, healthy little girl here" smiled the doctor. "She's beautiful right" said Kate proudly. "Gorgeous" said the doctor. "Time for a bath little one, lets get all that gunk off you" said the nurse. "Doctor Morgan, as soon as you're done with the bath you need to fill out some paper work for Sara and Amelia" said another nurse popping in her head. "Sure" smiled Kate.
"So Sara, how'd you meet Kate?" asked Aaron while getting Sara settled in a maternity room. "I've known her a long time but then Kate treated my twin sister Tegan... she pretty much saved her life. Tegan was so critically ill for so long... we thought we were going to lose her. Anyway... um... Kate and I just got really close after that and... you know... one thing led to another and here we are... engaged... parents" smiled Sara. "Your twin sister's a kid?" joked Aaron. "Before she changed to pediatrics" laughed Sara. "You both look really happy" said Aaron. "We are... I've never been happier. Kate's amazing" said Sara. "She is isn't she... we studied together and then we were interns together. Kate was always the star. She's just so freakishly talented... and she's actually got a personality to go with it" said Aaron. Sara smiled. "God I had such a crush on her for years" said Aaron doing an ultrasound. "Really?" said Sara. "Everyone did... but Kate was... off limits I guess" he winked. "I'm a lucky girl" said Sara. "You can say that again... and I get the feeling she's a lucky girl too" smiled Aaron. Sara just blushed. "Well Ms Quin... your obs are stable, breathing seems to be under control, BP is stable. We're going to keep you overnight for observation and if everything goes according to plan you should be able to go home tomorrow or the day after" said Aaron. "Thank you... how long do you think Kate will be?" asked Sara. "Shouldn't be much longer. You can take a shower tomorrow morning. Lucy's going to give you a sponge bath in the meantime. Should make you feel a lot better getting rid of all that blood, sweat and tears" winked Aaron.
A nurse walked into Sara's room pushing a baby cot after Sara was cleaned up. "Amelia... my sweet little super star" squealed Sara. The nurse picked Amelia up and handed her to Sara. "Look at you, all nice and clean" cooed Sara. "And hungry" smiled the nurse. "Where's Kate?" asked Sara. "She'll be here soon, sorting out your admission forms. Had to pry the baby out of her hands" laughed the nurse. "Okay, let's see how the breast feeding is going" said the nurse and helped Sara start to breastfeed.
Kate leaned against the doorframe admiring her two girls in the dimly lit room. "Heeey, where have you been?" smiled Sara when she glanced up. "Paperwork... that and I forgot your medicare card, my credentials, everything at the cabin. Had to phone Tegan to get it" said Kate walking up to the bed. "Did you wake her?" asked Sara softly. "No... the two of them are apparently having my French champagne to celebrate and unwind" said Kate. Sara laughed. "Did she even give you the right details after the champagne?" asked Sara. "Hope so... gosh I never knew how much admin it was to get a patient admitted" said Kate. "No... superdoc doesn't deal with admin" winked Sara. Kate just sniggered.
"How's my gorgeous girls doing?" asked Kate sitting down next to Sara on the bed. "We're great. Little angel had a good feed and she passed out straight after" said Sara. "Look at that beautiful head of hair" cooed Kate. "She's a Quin after all... good hair runs in the family" joked Sara softly. "She looks like you... and I'm sooo good with that...as long as you don't give her a baby mullet" said Kate. "Shoot me if I do... So you seem to have quite the fan in Dr Beaumont" said Sara. "Huh?" said Kate. "Oh he adores you, told me all about the massive crush he and the whole class had on you back in Med school" said Sara. "What? He's lying... I was such a nerd" said Kate. "Well some people like nerds... especially cool, smart, beautiful, funny, articulate nerds" smiled Sara and kissed Kate. "Well... this nerd is all yours babe" said Kate.
"I love you" said Sara. "And I love you... thank you Sara... for this beautiful gift" said Kate. "My pleasure" said Sara and leaned back against Kate's shoulder. "You should get some rest, you're exhausted" said Kate. "Mmmm" grunted Sara. "Are you in pain?" asked Kate. "It's not too bad. Just a bit sore" said Sara. "Understandably so. I'm so sorry if I hurt you" said Kate. "You didn't hurt me! Childbirth hurt me as well... as childbirth does. Nurse said she'd be back with some pain killers soon... ones that won't interfere with breast feeding" said Sara. "Good... let me put our princess to bed" said Kate. "I just want to hold her forever" said Sara. "I know" smiled Kate and put her hands under Amelia. "Goodnight my beautiful baby girl... I love you" whispered Sara.
Kate gently put Amelia in her bed and kissed her forehead. She took a seat in the recliner next to Sara's bed, holding her hand. "Get some sleep, it's past 2am. She's going to be awake again in less than three hours" said Kate. "Lie down next to me" said Sara. "You'll be more comfortable this way" said Kate. "I want you next to me sweetie" said Sara softly. "Okay... In a minute. I'm just going to chase up that nurse" said Kate just before the door opened. "Sara, some IV paracetamol and some heat packs are pretty much all we can do to make you a bit more comfy" said the nurse. She injected something into Sara's IV and put a heat pack on her belly before taking her pulse, BP and pulse ox again. "Everything's just fine... Here's the call button if you need anything. Get some rest" said the nurse before dimming the lights and leaving the room. Kate pulled Amelia's cot closer, kicked her shoes off and got onto the bed next to Sara. Sara put her head on Kate's shoulder. "Did you weigh her?" asked Sara. "Yeah! She's small, but perfect... just about six pounds" said Kate. "I'm so thrilled... so, so happy" whispered Sara before falling into a well deserved, sweet slumber.
