Chapter 176
Tegan was surprised to be woken up by a soft knock on the door instead of a screaming baby. "Teegs… time to get up. Made you some coffee" said Jeremy holding Casey. "Hmmmm…. Morning Jer… hey sweetie pie" said Tegan sitting up. She held her arms out to take Casey. "Where's Ryan?" asked Tegan. "Still sleeping" said Jeremy. "Is your brother being a sleepy head again?" said Tegan in a funny voice and tickled Casey's tummy. "How are you feeling Casey baby… better?" said Tegan. "Well I didn't hear her once during the night so I think she's feeling better!" said Jeremy. "She's smiling again" said Tegan and put her hand on her forehead. "Much cooler! Linds… wake up babe" said Tegan. Lindsey just grunted next to her. "Did you get a good night's rest?" asked Jeremy. "Hmm, I was up a few times to check on my little munchkin but I got more sleep than expected" said Tegan kissing Casey. "Babe… wake up" said Tegan. "Okay, okay" mumbled Lindsey. Tegan put the thermometer into Casey's ear. "Hooray! Temps back to normal… good job Case… Good job sweetie! Open your mouth so I can see if you have any more chompers" said Tegan and put her finger into Casey's mouth. "Yay, it's there buba! It's there! Don't bite mommy" said Tegan. "I hear Ryan, I'll go get him" said Jeremy. "Thanks Uncle Jeremy, you're the best" said Tegan. "Soooo the big day is here" said Lindsey. "Well tomorrow is the big day really" said Tegan. "Yeah but it all starts today…. And you…. are going to be amazing" said Lindsey softly and kissed Tegan. "Sorry, I'm interrupting" said Jeremy bringing Ryan into the room. "No you're not… anyway you're so used to seeing us make out" said Tegan. "I'll give you an extra five minutes while I go take a shower then it's go, go, go guys! Can't be late" said Jeremy. "Yeah, yeah" said Tegan playing with Ryan's feet. "I mean it Tee… I'm going to be all over you like a rash today. We have a tight schedule" said Jeremy.
An hour later Tegan, Jeremy and Lindsey were ready to go. Sonia arrived to stay with the twins as Lindsey was packing her photographic equipment in the car. Jeremy made up some story about falling down some stairs to explain his black eye. "You look amazing Tegan. You're going to be great. I'm so proud of you, I love you" said Sonia and hugged Tegan. "Thanks mom, are you going to be okay with them?" asked Tegan. "Well I raised you and your sister just fine so… I think a day or two with them will be okay" said Sonia. "Sorry, they can be a handful" said Tegan. "It'll be fine. Meeting up with Kate's parents and Amelia in the park this afternoon" said Sonia. "Sounds like fun, take one of the security guys with you please" said Tegan. "Yup" nodded Sonia. "Mom please check Casey's temp every hour… actually just check both of them. Call me if it goes over 100. Um…. there's some Tylenol on the kitchen counter and…" rambled Tegan. "Tegan we'll be fine… go now or you're going to be late" said Sonia. "Tom's already called three times and we still have to pick up Sara" said Jeremy. "Okay, okay. Love you monkeys. Be good for Grandma" said Tegan and kissed her kids goodbye before jumping in the car.
They stopped in front of Sara's house and Jeremy hooted. "I'll go get her" said Tegan. "Almost ready, two minutes" said Sara opening the door. "Sar we're late" said Tegan walking in after her. "Morning Tee" said Kate. "Wassup K-dawg" said Tegan and gave Kate a fist pump. "How's Casey?" asked Kate. "As if nothing ever happened of course… fever's gone, tooth is in" said Tegan. "Good to hear! Good luck for today" said Kate eating her breakfast. "Thanks. Sara come ooooon" yelled Tegan. "Okay, I'm ready" said Sara rushing out of the room. Kate grabbed her hand and pulled her down for a kiss. "Sorry I can't come with you today. Big surgery. I'll be thinking of you all through it though. Good luck, you're going to be great! I love you" said Kate. "I understand Katy, good luck with surgery. Love you" said Sara. "Okay cut the fluff people we're late" said Tegan. "Love you baby…. I hear Amelia" said Sara. "I've got it! Everything's under control. Go" said Kate and got in another quick kiss and a pinch of her bum. "Love you rock star" said Kate. "Come the fuck on Sara" complained Tegan.
The first few interviews of the day went great and the girls got into the car. "Do you have anything to eat in here, I'm starving" said Tegan. "Everywhere we went they had a massive spread for you, didn't you eat anything?" asked Jeremy. "No… I was nervous and you didn't leave us much grazing time you know" said Tegan. "Lucky for you I know you well, so I worked in some time for lunch in the schedule. Where do you want to go? Something fancy to celebrate?" asked Jeremy. "No, nothing fancy, just somewhere with amazing cheeseburgers" said Sara. "Hell yeah" said Tegan and hi-fived Sara. "You got it" said Jeremy.
Jeremy looked at Tegan and Sara both on the phone to their respective babysitters. "All good on my side, Amelia is being an absolute angel" said Sara after hanging up. "Good on our side too. Kids are taking a nap now and they're meeting Amelia and Kate's parents in the park at 3.30" said Tegan and gave Lindsey a kiss. "I never thought I'd see you two Quins so domesticated" laughed Jeremy. "We can do it all… rock babies to sleep and then rock out on stage" winked Tegan and took a massive bite of her cheeseburger. "Careful, don't have extra clothes in the car for you" said Jeremy. "Speaking about babies, Tegan will always be your little baby won't she" said Sara. Jeremy took a serviette and wiped some ketchup from Sara's mouth "You both will" he smiled. Jeremy answered his cell phone and calmed down a stressed out Tom, assuring him that they were running on time and that everything was going really well with the interviews. "We don't pay you enough" said Tegan when Jeremy hung up. "No you don't, but truth be told, I'd do this job for fee" said Jeremy and smiled. "Yay we don't have to pay him anymore Sar" joked Tegan. "Yeah right… hurry up girls. Ellen's waiting" said Jeremy.
Sonia was reading her book on the couch while the kids were taking a nap. She heard a knock on the front door and frowned before looking at her watch. "Must be a misunderstanding" she mumbled and got up to open the door. "Jonathan! Lovely to see you" said Sonia and hugged Jonathan hello being completely unaware of what happened the previous night. "Sonia! Good to see you, you look lovely" said Jonathan. "Come in! What are you doing here?" asked Sonia. "Jeremy told me you'd be here today and I thought I'd say hi since I'm in the area" said Jonathan. "Great, I was just going to make some tea" said Sonia. "Sounds lovely" said Jonathan. He was good looking and charming and could be really likable when he wanted to be. "Would you mind if I pulled my car into the garage, just had it washed and the birds in this tree just always manages to poop right on my windscreen" said Jonathan. "No problem, here's the remote control" said Sonia.
"Hope everything is going well with the interviews" said Jonathan coming back into the kitchen. "Yeah, they're so passionate about this album and they loooove talking so I'm sure it's going just fine" said Sonia. "You must be very proud of them Sonia" said Jonathan. "I am. I just adore them" said Sonia. "Tell me about them when they were kids" said Jonathan. Sonia laughed. "It was hard being a single mom but these two… they had such amazing energy. They made it all okay. They were the cutest babies, and such awkward teenagers but they were mine… and I love every single little part of them" said Sonia. Jonathan swallowed hard and walked away. "Jon? You okay?" asked Sonia. "Of course, I'm fine" said Jonathan. "You sure?" said Sonia. "I sometimes wonder if it's ever going to happen for me" said Jonathan. "What happen?" asked Sonia. "Kids" said Jonathan. "It will happen. Give it some time" said Sonia. "And if it doesn't?" said Jonathan. "You have an amazing partner. If it doesn't happen you'll get through it…. Together" said Sonia. "I guess" said Jonathan. "How long have the kids been asleep?" asked Jonathan. "Not too long, twenty minutes maybe" said Sonia.
"Welcome guys! Always so good to have you here" said Ellen. "Thanks E. Always good to be here" said Tegan. "You're both looking amazing. Parenthood obviously agrees with you" said Ellen. "Ha… have you seen the dark circles under our eyes!" said Sara. "Nonsense, you look fabulous" said Ellen. "How are the little monkeys?" asked Ellen. "They're all great thanks, growing so fast" said Tegan. "You should have brought them with!" said Ellen. "Oh my gosh no… it would have been chaos. Anyway, the grandparents couldn't wait to babysit" said Sara. "Well, here's hair and makeup" said Ellen. "Great, we need help covering those dark circles" laughed Tegan. "Meh, adds to the rock star look" joked Ellen. "As soon as you're done here Jason will take you to the studio to do sound check" said Ellen. "Great thanks. Ellen, you're sure this is only going out tomorrow right" said Tegan. "Yup, only tomorrow" said Ellen. "Thanks" said Tegan. "I'll leave you to it. See you in a bit" said Ellen and left.
"Sonia, I think I just heard one of the kids" said Jonathan. "Really? Just give me a minute to go check. They shouldn't be waking up now but they're both struggling a bit with teething" said Sonia and left the room. Jonathan watched her leave the kitchen and put his hand in his pants pocket. He pulled out a small plastic bag filled with some kind of powder. He quickly shook the entire contents into Sonia's tea and stirred before stuffing the bag back into his pocket. "They're both still fast asleep. Neither one has a fever. Maybe one of them just had a bad dream" smiled Sonia walking back into the kitchen and took her tea to head to the living room.
Sonia and Jonathan were drinking their tea in the living room when Sonia's cell phone rang. "It's Tegan… paranoid mother" she said. "Don't tell her I'm here… Jer's going to kill me, I'm supposed to be at work but I pulled a sickie" said Jonathan. Sonia frowned. "Please?" mouthed Jonathan with his hands together. Sonia suddenly had an uneasy feeling wash over her. "Hey honey….. Yeah all's good…. They're still sleeping yes. Nope, no fever….. Tegan relax, everything's fine. I'll phone you if we need you. Good luck with the show" said Sonia. Jonathan shifted around uncomfortably. "Why didn't you want me to tell her" said Sonia. "I told you why Sonia" said Jonathan. "I don't understand how wanting to come say hi to me would be a big deal" said Sonia. "It's not…. I just…. I'll tell him about our visit tonight" said Jonathan. "What happened to your hands Jonathan?" asked Sonia. "Ugh… this… I had a fall yesterday" said Jonathan. Sonia frowned again, suddenly remembering Jeremy's story this morning. "Weird place to have bruises from a fall" said Sonia. Jonathan pretended not to hear her.
A few minutes later Sonia was starting to feel like death warmed up. "I don't feel so great" said Sonia. "What's wrong Sonia?" asked Jonathan with fake concern. "Just a bit dizzy. Maybe I'm coming down with something" said Sonia. "Perhaps you should postpone that park trip" said Jonathan. "No I'm fine" said Sonia getting up. The world started to spin. "Yeah maybe I should cancel" said Sonia. "Here's your phone. I can stay and help you look after them if you would like to go lie down" said Jonathan sweetly. "Thanks Jonathan, don't think that's necessary… don't know what's come over me suddenly. My heart is racing" said Sonia. She called Kate's mom and apologised for not being able to meet up in the park and asked them over for tea and a play date the next day.
"I'm going to check on the kids real quick" said Sonia getting up looking pale. She stopped half way through the lounge and started swaying. The picture was fuzzy and she saw double of everything. Sonia felt her legs start to buckle under her and he hung on to the back of the couch for support. She slowly slid down next to the couch. As soon as her knees hit the floor she was out for the count. She collapsed onto the floor, unconscious. Jonathan looked at her without emotion. He knelt down and put his fingers in her neck to check her pulse. He nodded and grabbed some tape from his back pack and started taping up Sonia's mouth. He then taped her hands behind her back and her feet together. "I'm sorry Sonia…. I didn't mean for you to get in the middle of this… I really like you… Sorry" he whispered.
"Okay guys, 5 minutes till show time" said the producer. Sara dialed Kate's mom again and got up to have a brief conversation with her. "Apparently they're not going to the park anymore. Mom called and said she's not feeling up to it" said Sara. "Who's not feeling up to it? Mom or Casey?" said Tegan. "Mom apparently" said Sara. "That's weird" said Tegan looking perplexed. "Maybe she's just not used to running after twins anymore" said Sara. "Yeah, let me give her a quick ring" said Tegan. She held the phone against her ear and bit her nail waiting for her mom to answer. "Mmm, no answer" she mumbled. "She must be taking a nap with them" said Lindsey. "One minute guys" said the producer. "Jer… try her again in five minutes please. If she doesn't answer get the security guard to go in and check on them" said Tegan. "No problem, break a leg" said Jeremy.
"They're here! The most anticipated album of the year is finally here! Everybody's favourite twins are are! Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the amazing Tegan and Sara!" said Ellen. Tegan and Sara both awkwardly danced their way into Ellen's studio. The crowd went nuts and were totally into their dorky dance moves. Lindsey was in the front row of the audience taking photos and giggling at the twins' shenanigans. Tegan danced up to her and grabbed her hand for a quick shuffle. She squeezed her hand, winked and jumped down a step to join Sara on stage.
Jonathan rushed into the twins' room and smiled when he saw them sleeping peacefully. He pulled two syringes out of his backpack and pulled some medication into the first one. He tapped the syringe and pulled open Ryan's crawler. "Sorry buddy, this will only sting for a second and then you'll be off in la la land for a while" he said. He stuck the needle into Ryan's thigh and pressed the plunger. Ryan woke up and he started screaming. The screaming only lasted for a few seconds before his eyes went droopy and eventually closed. "There we go... sleep well big boy" said Jonathan. He did the same thing to Casey before picking Ryan up and putting him into one of the carry seats standing in the corner. He entered the garage through the house and strapped Ryan's seat into the back of his car before fetching Casey and doing the same. He threw a black blanket over both the car seats and got into the drivers seat. "Here we go" he breathed and pressed the remote control button to open the garage door.
Jeremy watched Tegan and Sara being interviewed from the side of the set like a proud parent. They were amazing as always, funny, articulate, sincere. The audience seemed to really love them. He turned and walked back stage and dialed Sonia's number. No answer. He suddenly had an uneasy feeling and dialed the security guard. "Jimmy, hey it's Jeremy" he said into the phone.
Jonathan exited the garage slowly and waited for the guard to open the gate. "Just a sec" said the guard. Jonathan gripped the steering wheel tight and breathed in deep through his nose, ready to drive through the gate if he needed to. His car had dark tinted windows and he knew it was pretty much impossible to see inside unless you stuck your head in the car.
"Jim is everything okay over there? Sonia's not answering her phone" said Jeremy. "Hang on a sec" said Jim. He held his hand over the phone's mouthpiece. "Everything okay in there? Sonia's not answering her phone" he said. "Oh yeah, everything's great. We heard it ring, was in the middle of a diaper change. She's just put them to bed and she's going to take a nap now too. Those two can be exhausting. Everything's fine" lied Jonathan. "Great thanks, see ya" said the guard and opened the gate. "Jeremy, everything's fine. Apparently they were in the middle of a diaper change. They're all napping now" said the guard. "Cool, thanks man" said Jeremy and hung up. Jonathan turned around and saw the guard plonk back down on his chair with a magazine. He grinned and stepped hard on the accelerator, speeding away with the drugged up twins in his back seat.
