Chapter 177
Tegan, Sara, Lindsey and Jeremy were having a drink at a cocktail bar after a crazy day. "You two were amazing today. I'm so proud of you. Cheers!" said Jeremy and raised his glass. "Hell yeah, cheers to that" said Lindsey and kissed Tegan. "Thanks guys, and thanks for holding our hands as always" said Sara. "Tomorrow's going to be fun" said Tegan. "Everybody who's heard the record is crazy about it. I smell a number one album" said Jeremy. "Let's not get too excited yet" said Sara. "Stop being so Canadian... You guys are on a roll, and this album is truly your best work ever. All that Oscar buzz helps too" smiled Lindsey. Tegan blushed. "You are so good for our egos" she said and kissed Lindsey again.
"Okay guys, let's get going. Long day tomorrow. I promised Kate I'd be home by six and I still want to swing by your place first to say hi to mom" said Sara. "Kate home?" asked Tegan. "Not yet, shift ends at 7 but I think the babysitters are exhausted by now" said Sara and got up. "We'll drop you, just need to stop by Jeremy's place to go pick up some stuff. Tell mom we won't be long. Or... do you want to go home so long babe?" said Tegan. "No, I'll come with you guys. Give Sara a few minutes with Sonia" said Lindsey. "Don't worry, I'll take a cab" said Sara. "You sure?" asked Tegan. "Yeah, Jeremy's place isn't exactly on the way" said Sara. "The security guy's been sleeping in the car all day, he can take you" said Jeremy pointing at the car that's been following them all day. "Great, see you tomorrow" said Sara.
Sara knocked on Tegan's front door. Nobody answered. "Mom" she called out. She turned the doorknob, it was unlocked. "Weird, she always locks the door" Sara mumbled. "Mom!" she yelled again. There was no answer. She started walking through the house. "Hey guys... where are you. Diaper change?" she said before checking the twins' bedroom. She walked back out and checked the other rooms. They were all empty. "Mom come on" said Sara and started jogging to the living room. She turned the corner and saw Sonia lying on the floor, tied up. "Oh my God, Mom" she yelled and rushed to Sonia's side. She fell down onto her knees and started shaking Sonia's shoulders. "Mom! Mom wake up! Mom!" she yelled. Sonia didn't move. "Help! Heeelp, I need help in here!" she yelled at the top of her voice while searching for a pulse. "Heeeelp" she yelled again. The security guards had changed shifts an hour ago and Peter, the new guard came running into the house. "What the hell" he exclaimed. "Call an ambulance! Call a fucking ambulance" yelled Sara. "Mom, come on wake up Mom. Sonia! Sonia open your eyes" said Sara loudly before ripping the tape off Sonia's face. The guard called 911 immediately. "The kids, where's the kids?" Sara yelled. She felt herself start to hyperventilate as images of her own kidnapping started rushing back into her head.
"This traffic is fucking killing me" said Tegan looking bored on the way to Jeremy's house. "Sorry, traffic doesn't even move for superstars" said Jeremy. Tegan pulled her phone out of her pocket. "Fuck, there goes the battery" she sighed. "Time to ditch the Blackberry Tee, it's ancient" said Lindsey. "Call Sonia please" said Tegan. "Sara's with her. Stop hogging the mom" said Lindsey. "Yeah I guess" said Tegan.
Kate strolled down one of the hospital corridors chatting to Abby. "Can't wait for this shift to be over" said Kate. "Missing your rock star" joked Abby as Kate's phone rang. "Speaking of" said Kate and grinned. "Hey, how's my favourite rock star" smiled Kate.
"Kate, it's mom... she's unconscious. Kate she's not waking up, I don't know what to do" said Sara, desperate and in tears. "Sara calm down, what happened? Did you call 911?" said Kate stopping in her tears. "I don't know... I don't know" said Sara still in tears. "Sara did you call an ambulance" said Kate calmly. "Yes... Kate help me" cried Sara. "Okay Sara, get her on her back. Put me on speaker" said Kate. Sara's hands were shaking so badly and her tears flooded her vision, she could hardly press the right button but managed to do so. Peter had cut the tape off Sonia's hands a few seconds earlier. "Okay, she's on her back" said Sara. "Ok Sar, check for a pulse in her neck. Can you do that for me?" said Kate. "Yeah" whimpered Sara. She put her hand back in Sonia's neck. "Sara, talk to me" said Kate. "Um...Yeah... I feel a pulse" said Sara through her tears. "That's good Sar, is it fast or slow?" asked Kate. "It's really fast but it feels weak" said Sara. "Okay Sar check her breathing now... tilt her head back to open her airway and see if she's breathing" said Kate. "Okay" mumbled Sara. "Sar... Sar is she breathing" said Kate. "She... yeah she's breathing but it's shallow" said Sara. "Good Sar, turn her on her side now" said Kate. Sara pulled her mother's lifeless arm and rolled her onto her side. "The ambulance is on it's way Sara just stay calm... stay calm... is there somebody there with you to go check on the kids" said Kate. "They're not here... they're not here" cried Sara. "What do you mean they're not there" said Kate. "They... Sonia was tied up on the floor... I think she was drugged... oh fuck Kate... somebody took them... oh fuck" cried Sara. "Are you at Tegan's house?" asked Kate looking pale. "Yes" said Sara sounding panicked. "Sara check her pulse again, you need to keep checking her pulse for me" said Kate. She turned to Abby and put her hand over the mouthpiece. "Get the police out to Tegan's house, now... hurry" she said.
"Should I come in with you?" asked Tegan when the car stopped in front of Jeremy's apartment. "No... I'll just be a minute" said Jeremy. "Okay, you sure he's not here?" asked Tegan. "He'll still be at work" said Jeremy and got out of the car. "I'm bored" said Tegan lying back in the seat. "Oh I think I've got something to keep you busy hot stuff" said Lindsey and started a hot and heavy make out session.
Two ambulance officers burst into Tegan's living room. "Okay Miss just give us some space to work" said the one. "Sara" said Kate over the phone. "Kate" said Sara picking up her phone. "They'll take care of her Sara. I'm going down to the ER now, I'll meet you outside. Tell them to bring her here" said Kate. "Uh... okay... Kate I'm scared" cried Sara. "It's okay baby... stay calm" said Kate. "The kids... what about the kids" said Sara. "Sara, you just be there for Sonia. The cops are on their way and I'll phone Tegan now" said Kate.
Jeremy unlocked his front door and walked into his apartment. He looked up and saw Jonathan sitting on one of the couches. "Jerry, baby... I'm so happy you're home, I've missed you so much..." he said. Jeremy put his hands in his sides and looked up in frustration. "I thought you'd be at work" he said emotionless. "No... I didn't go to work today... I was thinking... about us... about how much I love you" said Jonathan. "Funny way of showing it" said Jeremy. Jonathan got up and walked closer to Jeremy. "I'm so sorry baby. I'm so sorry for hurting you. It'll never happen again, I promise" he said and touched Jeremy's face. Jeremy turned his head away. "Jon, it's over" he said softly. "No, Jer... listen baby... I've been thinking about our future... about our family... I've got a great surprise for you... you're going to be so thrilled... we're going to be so happy... forever... I promise" he said.
Kate dialed Tegan's number while jogging down to the ER. It went straight to voicemail. "That fucking lousy Blackberry battery" mumbled Kate and tried Lindsey's number. "Great, it's ringing" said Kate to herself. "Come on Linds answer the fucking phone" mumbled Kate.
Tegan and Lindsey's make out session continued in the car. Lindsey's phone buzzed next to them, it was still on silent after the Ellen interview. "Come the fuck on Lindsey, pick up the phone" said Kate.
"Let's get her on some oxygen and get a canula in" said the one ambulance officer listening to Sonia's heart with a stethoscope. "Got it" said his female partner checking Sonia's pupils with a torch. "She's tachy, I'll get her on a monitor and get her BP" said the guy. "Miss do you have any idea what caused this" asked the girl. "It's Sara... no... just found her tied up on the floor" said Sara pacing around. "Sats are a bit low. 93%... BP 95 over 70. Start a bag of saline and then we'll load and go" said the guy.
"Jonathan... I don't think so... I'm sorry, I can't do this any more" said Jeremy. "Jeremy please, you know we're made for each other. Once you see the surprise... everything will be perfect... everything" said Jonathan looking a bit crazed. "What's the surprise?" asked Jeremy emotionless. "Um... not yet... sit down I'll get you a glass of wine" said Jonathan. "Jon I can't. Tegan and Lindsey's waiting in the car outside" said Jeremy. "What? What are they doing here?" said Jonathan suddenly looking panicked. "They're waiting for me to pick up some stuff" said Jeremy looking perplexed. "Shit... phone them and get rid of them" said Jonathan. "No, I'm going Jon" said Jeremy getting up. "Jeremy come on" begged Jonathan. Jeremy turned his head and saw two carry seats at the door. He immediately recognised Casey and Ryan's blankets in them. He suddenly turned pale. "What are those doing here?" he asked slowly. "Jer... my love... it's the surprise" said Jonathan softly. "What the fuck Jonathan... where are they?" asked Jeremy and started walking to the bedroom fast. "Turn around slowly" said Jonathan. "I said turn around" he said louder. Jeremy kept walking but turned his head to see Jonathan pointing a gun at him.
"Mom you're going to be okay, you're going to be fine" cried Sara holding Sonia's face in her hand in the ambulance. Sonia's head started moving from side to side a few seconds after the girl injected something into the IV line. "Sonia... open your eyes for us" she said. "Come on Mom open your eyes" said Sara. Sonia's eyes struggled open. She looked confused and agitated and pushed the oxygen mask away. "Keep that on for us Sonia... good girl" said the ambulance officer. "What... where... the kids" mumbled Sonia. The girl shone a light into Sonia's pupils again just as the ambulance stopped and the doors swung open. "Give me the bullet" shouted Kate as they started wheeling Sonia out. "GCS is 12, improved from 8 earlier after one unit of narcan on route. Pupils equal and reactive but sluggish. She's maintaining her own airway, O2 sats are improving after 10l on a non-rebreather. BP is low but it's holding steady. Temp's 96.5. She's tachycardic, pulse hovering around 140" reported the ambo. "Katy" said Sara sounding fragile. "We're going to take good care of her Sar" said Kate. Sonia seemed to struggle a bit to wake up and kept blinking hard. "I'm here mom... It's Sara... I'm here" said Sara walking into the ER holding her mom's hand.
"What the hell is taking him so long" said Tegan. "Takes longer to pack than you do" said Lindsey. "You know metro men. Probably trying to find a bag big enough to fit all his cosmetics" laughed Tegan. "I'm going to chase him up. Can't wait to see my monkeys" said Tegan. "Hang on, can this monkey have just one more kiss" said Lindsey. "Oh naughty monkey" said Tegan in a mock sexy voice and kissed Lindsey again.
Jeremy stopped and slowly turned around with his hands in the air. "Jonathan... put down the gun" he said softly. "No... get into the lounge" said Jonathan. "Jon please... Come on, put down the gun. We'll take the babies back home and then we can talk" said Jeremy. "They're not going anywhere... they are home... they're ours now" said Jonathan. Jeremy swallowed hard. "I don't understand what... what you want to achieve by this" said Jeremy slowly walking back to the lounge. "Once we're a together, as a family, you'll understand. You'll see how happy we are and you'll never look back, I promise... I love you Jeremy. We're going to be one big happy family" said Jonathan. "Jon... they'll find them... the cops will find us" said Jeremy. "No they won't... I have a plan" said Jonathan. "A plan" said Jeremy still with his hands in the air. "Yeah, but we have to hurry up" said Jonathan with a crazy look in his eyes. "Call Tegan... right now. Tell her to go home. Tell her you'll come back later tonight" said Jonathan. Jeremy didn't move. "Call her" shouted Jonathan. "Okay... alright... calm down" said Jeremy. He started dialing.
Lindsey felt the phone vibrate in the bag against her calf and broke her kiss. She dug it out of the bag and looked at the screen. "It's Jeremy" she said and gave the phone to Tegan. "Tee it's me... You guys go home without me. I have a couple of things to take care of here, I'll get a cab back to your place" said Jeremy. "Oh... are you sure, we can wait" said Tegan. "I'm sure Tegan" said Jeremy and hung up. "Jer?" said Tegan and looked at the phone. "Hung up on me..." said Tegan looking perplexed. "What did he say?" said Lindsey. "Said we could go, he'll meet us at home" said Tegan. "Okay let's gooo" said Lindsey and got out of the car to get into the driver's seat. "Weird" mumbled Tegan looking puzzled.
"Can you tell us your name please?" said Kate swinging a neuro torch into Sonia's pupils. "Uh... " grunted Sonia. "Come on tell us your name" said Kate. "S... Sonia" whispered Sonia sounding winded. "Good Sonia, do you know where you are right now?" asked Kate. "Um... the kids... the kids" mumbled Sonia. "Mom what about the kids?" asked Sara. "He... he... are they okay?" mumbled Sonia before starting to shake. "She's seizing, one gram of medazalam" shouted Kate turning Sonia onto her side. "Mom... Mom!" shouted Sara. "Sara wait outside" said Kate holding Sonia's shaking body down. "No I need to stay with her" said Sonia. "Outside Sara!" said Kate. Sonia's body slowly stopped shaking and Kate proceeded shouting out drug and blood test orders.
Abby forced Sara outside. She had her hands in her hair. "Tegan... I need to phone Tegan" she mumbled and started dialing. "Answer Tee" she cried. "Sara let me help you, what's going on?" asked Abby holding on to Sara's shoulders. "Tegan's phone is off... Lindsey and Jeremy's are both just ringing" said Sara trying again.
Tegan and Lindsey were a block away from Jeremy's house when Tegan spoke after just staring out the window. "Turn around" she said. "Tegan it's late, let's just get home" said Lindsey. "Turn around Linds... Something's not right. Jeremy... he didn't sound right... something's off" said Tegan. "Tee" said Lindsey before being interrupted by Tegan. "Please just turn around. I have a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach" said Tegan. The cellphone in Lindsey's bag was vibrating silently on the back seat, drowned out completely by the heated conversation.
"Sara..." said Kate coming out from behind the curtain where Sonia was being treated. "Sar she's okay... she's going to be okay" said Kate hugging Sara. "Talk to me Kate" said Sara. "We're working on getting whatever toxins are in your mom's bloodstream out. Her vitals are looking good, she's unconscious again though" said Kate. "When will she wake up" asked Sara. "We're keeping her under for a while since she had a seizure" said Kate. "She's never had a seizure" said Sara on the verge of tears again. "I know... it must be the drugs in her system causing it" said Kate. "Kate she needs to wake up soon... she needs to tell us what happened. I just spoke to the cops. They're trying to get hold of the guard on duty earlier today but they don't have a clue where the kids are" said Sara.
"I'll just give him a hand. Why don't you check out some of the shots you got today so long" said Tegan slamming the car door shut. She knocked on the the front door. "Jeremy" she yelled. "Get rid of her" said Jonathan. "Put away the gun first" said Jeremy. Jonathan didn't move. "Please, put away the gun... I'll listen once she's gone" said Jeremy. Jonathan walked over to the couch and put the gun under one of the couch cushions. "Tegan go home" said Jeremy on the other side of the door. "No... I'm coming in" said Tegan and opened the door. "Tegan no!" said Jeremy quickly but he was too late. Tegan stood in the doorway. Jonathan and Jeremy were both sitting on couches. "Tegan I said go home" said Jeremy. "You... you little fucker. He doesn't want anything more to do with you" said Tegan. "Shut up" said Jonathan. "Tegan stay out of it" said Jeremy. Jonathan got up and walked over to Tegan. "Go home... keep your nose out of our business" said Jonathan with his face up against Tegan's. "And if I don't... are you going to beat me up like you did Jeremy?" said Tegan sounding cocky.
"It was an accident" said Jonathan. "Accident my ass" said Tegan. "Get out" said Jonathan. "Not without Jeremy" said Tegan. "Tegan please... go home" said Jeremy. Tegan stared at Jonathan for a minute. "I'll give you a few minutes to pack. I'll be right outside" said Tegan. "Tegan stop it... go home. I'll call you later. Go check on the kids" said Jeremy. Jonathan turned his face to Jeremy looking irate. "Okay... just trying to help" sighed Tegan. "Thank you" said Jeremy. "If you hurt him again asshole" said Tegan and turned around. Her eye caught the two carry chairs next to the door and she stopped in her tracks. Her mind flashed back to this morning when she almost tripped over the one. "Where are they... where's my kids?" she asked turning around. "How should I know" said Jonathan. "You bastard, what are their chairs doing here" said Tegan shoving Jonathan hard. "Where are they?" screamed Tegan and started walking to the bedrooms. "Stop" said Jonathan. "Fuck you" said Tegan loudly and kept walking. Jonathan had since grabbed a knife from the kitchen counter and ran after Tegan. "Jonathan no" shouted Jeremy rushing after him. Tegan turned slightly for a second and felt something in her side. She stopped and put her hand on her side before bringing her hand up in front of her face. She looked at her fingers full of blood.
"You fucker... ahhhh. Don't you touch her!" shouted Jeremy and jumped on Jonathan. He started punching him as hard as he could. The knife sliding skid to the side. "Kids" mumbled Tegan and stumbled to the bedroom. She saw Casey and Ryan on the double bed, they seemed to be asleep. "Monkeys... wake up for mommy" she said holding her side. She bent down to check if they were breathing. Everything seemed fine. "Think Tegan" she mumbled to herself putting her hand in her hair. The next second Jeremy was next to her. He pulled her close. "Tegan... Tee are you okay" said Jeremy inspecting Tegan's wound. "Uh... yeah... I'm okay, just a scratch, don't think it's very deep" said Tegan. "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry... He... He's crazy, we need to call the cops" said Jeremy. "Where is he?" said Tegan. "He... he's out for the count... Maybe I killed him Tegan" said Jeremy breathing fast.
"Take the kids, we need to get out of here" said Tegan. She flinched in pain as she picked up Casey. "Tegan, are you okay" said Jeremy. "I'm fine" said Tegan. The adrenaline in her bloodstream masking her pain. Jeremy picked Ryan up. "Why aren't they waking up Jer?" said Tegan sounding panicked. "Put them down" they heard Jonathan saying. They turned around and saw Jonathan pointing the gun at them. "I said put them down right now" said Jonathan. "No" said Tegan. "I swear to god I'll shoot you both if you don't" said Jonathan. "Put her down Tee" said Jeremy softly as he put Ryan down. "Please Jonathan, please... please... why aren't they waking up" said Tegan starting to cry. "They're just sleeping. I won't do anything to hurt them... I love them" said Jonathan. Tegan reluctantly put Casey down. "Get into the lounge" said Jonathan and wiped some blood from his mouth.
