Yukine looked apprehensively into the floor-length mirror, taking in the suit Yato had dressed him in.
"I don't know, don't you think it's too much?"
"Too much?" Yato exclaimed, slipping the straight pins from his mouth and slipped them into the pincushion on his wrist. He stepped back and stared at Yukine's suit appraisingly, fiddling with the tailor's tape around his neck. "It's perfect! I want you to be outfitted properly for your first ever school formal dance! Are you sure they don't need more chaperones?"
"No! You're too embarrassing!"
Yato gasped, scandalized. "When have I ever been embarrassing to you?"
"You cried on my first day of school!"
"All parents do that!"
"You send my lunch to school with brain bots when I forget it!"
"I'm very busy!"
"You took my baby pictures on the Today Show!"
"You were a very cute baby!"
"You weren't even there! And you pasted pictures of yourself over my father like some sort of psychopath!" Yukine looked infuriated as Yato chuckled.
"Okay, Kazuma dared me to do that one."
"I'm going to kill both of you!"
"But then you won't be able to go to your dance!"
"I think you're living vicariously through me because you dropped out of school before your first one," Yukine huffed, tugging at the collar of his admittedly very nice suit, Today Show incident forgotten.
"No way! I just want you to look your best for your first date!"
"It's not a date!" Yukine exclaimed, face flaming red. Yato made a disbelieving sound.
"Oh I remember my first crush," Yato said wistfully, grinning at the gaging expression Yukine made.
"Kazuma is too good for you."
"How did you know it was Kazuma?"
"It was either him or a cute prison guard that you never told me about."
"Ah, Samantha, the one that got away." Yukine gave him a wary look.
"I can't tell if you're joking."
Yato winked at him, which only left him with more questions.
"Just so you know, it's okay if you kiss Suzuha tonight, but remember you're too young for-"
"AHHHH!" Yukine screamed, face flaming as he clapped his hands over his ears. Yato grinned broadly as he knelt at Yukine's side, marking the height his pants needed to be hemmed at.
"But if you don't there's nothing to be embarrassed about, I didn't get my first kiss until I was eighteen."
"...Samantha?" Yukine asked nervously.
"No, I never kissed a prison guard, Yukine."
"Good because if you had I'm pretty sure we'd have to make a report to the police and I think they've seen about enough of us." Yato laughed.
"I guess they have. It was after I had surfaced as the God of Calamity and Kazuma tracked me down in this seedy bar I used to hang out in. Once we got drunk and made out-"
"Gross."
"And it was really hot he slammed me into a wall-"
"AHHH!" Yukine shouted, clapping his hands over his ears again shouting to drown out Yato's terrible story. Yato chuckled but decided to take mercy on him.
Yukine sat on the couch, trying hard to pretend he wasn't nervous, but he was rolling the hem of his carefully pressed shirtsleeve between his middle finger and his thumb, staring absently at the bookshelf.
Yato and Hiyori sat on either side of him, Yato's arm stretched across Yukine's shoulders, hand resting on Hiyori's shoulder. They were both dressed nicely, ready for their date, the tripod tucked out of the way, having already served the purpose of taking all their group family photos. When Suzuha arrived Yato would take only a few dozen pictures of the two of them together before allowing them on their way.
A knock came at the door and Yukine practically jumped out of his skin. He leaped to his feet and bounded across the apartment, then halted in front of the door. He straightened his clothes before checking his reflection quickly in the mirror next to the door before opening it. Yato and Hiyori exchanged a fond smile before getting to their feet as Yukine came face to face with Suzuha.
"Uh, Hi," Yukine said, face going pink as he took in Suzuha's nice suit.
"Hi," Suzuha repeated, his cheeks a similar flush. Yato and Hiyori waved at Suzuha's parents, who returned the gesture but couldn't enter because Yukine was blocking the door. Yato cleared his throat.
"Yukine why don't you invite them in?"
"OH," Yukine said. "Come in," he stepped to the side, cheeks still pink, and Suzuha and his parents filed in. He wasn't too distracted by Suzuha's nice suit to make a disgusted sound when Suzuha's father greeted him as "Mister God of Fortune," though.
"Please, for the sake of Yukine's nasal passages, it's Yato."
"Hi, I'm Hiyori Iki, so nice to meet you," Hiyori said, reaching out to shake both their hands.
"This is a lovely apartment," Suzuha's mom said.
"Thank you, it's not much, but it's home. I didn't want to move when everything started changing, it's good to keep a little stability for Yukine."
"You mean you're too lazy to reinstall our security network in a new neighborhood and too paranoid to live in an apartment without a security network."
"I'm a man with many enemies! Are you wearing your bulletproof shirt?"
"Yes, are you wearing yours?"
"Yes!"
Hiyori looked to Suzuha's parents, who looked a touch alarmed by this exchange and smiled. "They're like this, bickering constantly."
"Yato why don't you hurry up and take the boy's pictures so they can head out, we're going to be late for our dinner reservation and I refuse to be flown by brain bot again." Yato grinned sheepishly and grabbed the tripod from where it had been stowed out of the way.
Yato began directing the boys gleefully, clicking the camera practically non stop while Hiyori chatted with Suzuha's parents.
"It must be hard for the two of you to get out for a date night with your schedules."
"It's nightmare," Yato said, eyes never leaving his task.
"Do the paparazzi bother you a lot?" The father asked.
"Not really, I have the power and connections to get them blacklisted from every major news organization in the city and Yato carries a sword so…" She giggled and smiled at the two of them.
"It's amazing what a glare will do for your personal space when the whole world is secretly afraid you'll decide you're tired of being good and just want to go apeshit."
"I regret ever showing you that meme," Yukine said.
Yato chuckled. He tossed a look at Suzuha's parents and saw their slightly nervous expressions now. "Don't worry, I'm not going to."
He turned back to the boys and clicked about a dozen more pictures before pulling away from the camera slightly to see what he'd gotten so far.
"Yato, I think that's enough."
"Oh, wait," Suzuha said suddenly, he ducked around Yato to his mother's side and reached into her purse to pull out two boutineers. Yato made an indescribable sound of cuteness as Suzuha flushed slightly and approached Yukine again. "I made us these, is that okay?"
Yukine nodded wordlessly as Suzuha leaned in and pinned the flower to his jacket collar. Yato recorded the whole thing, eyes big and misty.
"They grow up so fast!" Yato wailed then, throwing his arms around Yukine.
"You've known me for three years!" Yukine snapped, trying to shove the uncooperative Yato away from him.
"The best three years of my life!" Yato sobbed. Yukine softened, still trying to remove Yato, but more gently now.
"You're going to get snot all over my jacket."
"Come on, now Yato," Hiyori said, gently removing Yato from Yukine. "Why don't we walk them down, we need to get going.
"Okay." He sniffled but allowed himself to be led out the door.
They all filed into the elevator together, Yato managing to regain some kind of composure before they reached the ground floor.
"Okay, goodnight, Yukine. Have fun, and stay safe. I love you," Yato said, pulling Yukine in for a hug. Yukine, perhaps still softened by Yato's earlier proclamation, didn't resist, just hugged him back.
"Thanks for making my outfit, Dad, I love you too."
