Chapter 206

Kate looked at the face of the little boy on the operating table and took his hand.

"Hey buddy, sleepy time okay. When you wake up it's all going to be over. You're so brave!" smiled Kate.

"Is it going to hurt?" he asked in a small, scared voice.

"We're going to give you some medicine to make sure it doesn't hurt too much okay. And in a couple of days you can go home and you'll be able to play again! No more being stuck in bed" said Kate.

"Okay... will I have a scar" asked the boy.

"Yeah but you know what... scars are super cool. You can show everyone at school and tell them how brave you were" smiled Kate.

"Cool" said the boy.

"Okay buddy, I'm going to put this mask on your face now. Can you count to ten for me" asked Kate.

A few minutes later Kate was scrubbed and masked and started making an incision in the boy's abdomen.

"You're really good with kids. Speaking of... how's your little one?" asked one of the scrub nurses.

"Thanks. Amelia's great. Growing up so fast. Crawling so fast now and standing up agains things" said Kate and continued cutting.

The surgery went great and Kate was humming as she started finishing up an hour later.

"We're gonna miss you" said one of the other doctors.

"Don't know if I'll miss you but thanks" joked Kate.

"Your replacement is a real piece of work by the way" said Karev.

"Really, haven't met him... clamp" said Kate.

"Already chewed out one of the nurses and he's not even the boss yet" said Karev.

"You guys will be fine, cut please" said Kate stitching something up.

"What will you be doing? Volunteering at the clinic in South Central?" asked Karev.

"No... I'm going on tour with Sara" said Kate not looking up.

"Wow... that's... different. I guess it would be good if you could keep an eye on Tegan" said Karev.

"Nah, she's fine. I'm so excited. And best of all is I'll have the so much time with Amelia. I can't wait to get out of here actually. BP?" said Kate.

"Perfect... 120 over 80. You better not let the chief get wind of this... You know he doesn't like this rock star association and..." said Karev.

"I seriously don't give a shit if he likes it or not. Swab" said Kate.

"I wanted to say that if he gets wind of the fact that you're actually going to be having fun instead of moping around at home or working your ass off in some hell hole he may just lift the suspension and demand that you come back" said Karev.

Kate looked up for the first time during the conversation. "Knowing him... he may just do that" said Kate.

"Hey my lips are sealed... for all I know you're going to volunteer in some free clinic" said Karev.

"Not a peep from me" said the nurse. Everybody else nodded in solidarity with Kate.

"Dr Morgan... I'm Dr Flemming" said a guy standing at the door of the OR holding a mask in front of his face.

"Ah my stand in. Nice to meet you" said Kate.

"I need this OR, are you almost done" said the guy.

"I'm not done yet... Suction" said Kate.

"I'm doing an exploratory laparoscopy" said Flemming.

"Patient?" asked Kate not looking up as she continued working.

"One... Jason Bloch" said Flemming looking at a piece of paper.

"That's my patient... It's Justin by the way. I examined him and reviewed his chart before this surgery. Anything change?" asked Kate.

"No... but I'm of the opinion that he needs a lap" said Flemming sounding cocky.

"Dr... Flemming was it? I will tend to MY patient when I'm done here. You let me know if there's any change in his Obs before then" said Kate.

"I'm doing it... wrap up" said Flemming.

Kate stopped working and looked up. "Get out of my OR and do not touch Justin. Karev... go... check on him" said Kate.

"Dr Morgan... In case you haven't noticed... you're not the big cheese over here anymore" said Flemming.

"Oh but I am... you report to me for the next week. Now get out of my OR or I'll report you for insubordination" said Kate.

"Fine... This is on you" said Flemming and left.

"Told you he's a prick" said Karev.

"Karev why are you still here? Go check on Justin and report back. I don't want that asshole laying a hand on him" said Kate.

Kate walked into Justin's room a few minutes later. Dr Flemming was hovering around.

"Dr Morgan... Dr Flemming said that he needs to operate and I don't know if... I... um... please tell me what's going on? I'm so scared" said Justin's mom.

"Mrs Bloch... I just spoke to our resident and nothing has changed. I do not believe that Justin requires surgery just yet. I do not want to put him through an unnecessary ordeal" said Kate.

"Are you sure?" said the mom.

"We're keeping a very close eye on Justin. Trust me. We'll do the surgery if and when it becomes necessary. Sit tight while we run a few more tests" said Kate.

"How are you feeling big guy?" said Kate examining the boy.

"Okay... the same" said the boy pretty pre-occupied with his iPad.

"Dr Morgan, a word" said Flemming in his pretentious British accent when Kate was done.

After a long and heated conversation in the hallway Flemming eventually agreed to hold off on the surgery.

"Dr Flemming... I want to thank you for standing in for me. I'll be back in six months so don't get too comfy" said Kate.

"You're a loose cannon Morgan" said Flemming.

"Excuse me?" said Kate defensively.

"What... beating up visitors and all... wouldn't want that to get to the parents of your patients" said Flemming.

"You listen to me you pretentious little prick... you don't have any idea what happened that day. I'm bloody good at my job. A week from now you can run the show but until then I would prefer you get in line" said Kate softly but threateningly.

"So am I... and I intend to show them that. You take this time off to look for another position because I have a feeling you won't be the superstar anymore by the time you come back" grinned Flemming.

Kate laughed and shook her head. "Difference is... I don't really need this job. I have every hospital in the country desperate to sign me up. You on the other hand have desperation written all over you. They can smell that you know... desperation" said Kate.

"They won't when your little brawl and your lesbian love affair with a rock star comes out" said Flemming.

"It's not a love affair... She's my life partner, my fiancé... the mother of my child asshole. I dare you... go ahead... grow a pair" laughed Kate and walked away shaking her head.

"I can already not stand that guy" said Abby walking next to Kate.

"Abs... keep an eye on him and call me when he gets too much. I think Weber doesn't know what he signed up for here" said Kate.

"Oh I will... Don't worry Kate. You'll always be the captain of this ship" winked Abby.

"I'm not worried" laughed Kate.

"Oh and the patients don't like him either. Bedside manner sucks" said Abby.

"You see that I'm worried about. I don't want to leave my kids in the hands of some asshole" said Kate stopping in her tracks.

"Your kids huh?" said Abby.

"Yeah my kids" said Kate and started walking again.

"Anyway, let's see how this week goes. Maybe he's just keen to impress Weber. He'll calm down" said Abby.

That evening Kate got home and found Sara lying on their bed staring at the ceiling.

"Hey babe. How was your day?" asked Kate.

"Hi... fine... how was yours?" asked Sara.

"Ugh... eventful... hospital politics you know" said Kate rolling her eyes.

"Everything okay?" asked Sara.

"Yeah, nothing I can't handle" said Kate.

Sara stayed quiet.

"Baby... you okay?" asked Kate sitting down next to Sara.

Sara closed her eyes in the knowledge that she couldn't hide anything from Kate.

"I guess" said Sara.

"What's wrong Sar?" asked Kate.

Sara sighed. "My day wasn't fine... it was fucked up" said Sara.

"What happened?" asked Kate looking worried.

"I... um... Tegan and I were walking down the street and this fan came up and he was a bit... well... overzealous. Tegan lost her balance and landed on her bum and I fucking lost it. I was screaming like a lunatic. I just... lost it... I was so scared... It all just... rushed back into my head" said Sara and started crying.

"Oh sweetheart... I'm so sorry... come here" said Kate and took Sara in her arms.

"Tegan took me to see Violet... I was there for like two hours or something. I think it helped. I'm just... I mean... I thought I was over this" said Sara.

"Sweetie... it's good that you're dealing with this. Just take it one day at a time. This is a step in the right direction. You're going to be okay... Shhhh... it's okay... I'm here" said Kate still holding Sara.

"I know... It's going to be okay... I'm just so scared. We talked about Tegan being nervous... I'm nervous" said Sara.

"You take your time dealing with this Sara" said Kate.

"We don't really have time now do we" said Sara.

"I'm here... I'll catch you, I won't let you fall Sar" said Kate.

"I love you" said Sara softly after a few minutes.

"I love you too" smiled Kate.

"Look what I got" said Sara and lay back against the pillows pulling up her shirt.

"Oh my gosh babe... that's... amazing... thank you" said Kate almost in tears.

"Hey who said the K stands for Kate?" said Sara.

"Oh uh... sorry... I" stammered Kate.

"Come here silly... of course it stands for Kate. My Kate... my rock... my anchor" said Sara and kissed Kate softly.

Tegan lay in Lindsey's arms in front of the TV after telling her all about their ordeal.

"I'm going to miss these chilled moments" said Tegan.

"Oh we're going to have plenty of time to chill in the bus" said Lindsey.

"Yeah... we just need to get through the launch first" said Tegan.

"You'll be fine honey" said Lindsey kissing Tegan's hand.

"I hope so... this is going to be a challenge that's for sure" said Tegan.

"Luckily you're always up for a challenge aren't you.

Tegan just snorted.

"Let's go to bed. You have a long day of rehearsals and meetings in front of you" said Lindsey.

"I should start writing again... I have so much going on emotionally I need to write... that usually helps" said Tegan ignoring Lindsey's request to go to bed.

"Good idea" said Lindsey.

"Problem is just when I want to write I don't have time for it" said Tegan sitting up.

"You'll make time for it... I know you. You're going to be okay Tegan... and Sara's going to be fine too. Just keep your chin up" said Lindsey.

"Thanks... I'll try" said Tegan.

"Maybe we can do some meditation tomorrow morning?" said Lindsey.

"Oh really... when do you want to do that? Between the first diaper change and breakfast while the twins are crawling all over us?" said Tegan annoyed.

"I'm just trying to help Tegan. I'll keep the kids busy" said Lindsey.

"I'm sorry Boo... You've been amazing. I don't know what I'd do without you. I'm sorry for snapping at you" said Tegan.

-o-

The week went by really fast and the twins were kept very busy with rehearsals, meetings and sessions with Violet.

"Take 5 guys" said Sara during rehearsal.

"How are you holding up Sar?" asked Tegan when the band left.

"Okay actually. I'm kind of glad we've been busy you know" said Sara.

"How are your sessions with Violet going?" asked Tegan.

"Good... I think we're getting somewhere" is all Sara was willing to share.

"How are you holding up? How's your health?" asked Sara.

Tegan rolled her eyes. "I'm fine. Nervous as hell but fine. Been checking my vitals regularly. Everything is fine. Nebulizing twice a day to keep the old airbags happy and I feel great physically. Oh and it's great having a smaller brace and no more crutches" said Tegan.

"That's great Tee... you let me or Kate know if you start feeling funny okay?" said Sara.

"Sara relax... I'm fine. And I promise, you guys will be the first to know if anything starts feeling unwell. I'm not letting health issues spoil this. I'm taking good care of myself. I really am" said Tegan.

"Sorry I know you don't like me fussing" said Sara.

"No Sar. it's okay... I appreciate that you're looking out for me" said Tegan tuning her guitar.

-o-

"Date night! I'm excited" smiled Sara when she picked up Kate at the hospital that evening.

"Hey gorgeous... you look amazing" smiled Kate.

"So do you McDreamy" winked Sara.

"No I don't, I look like hell. Only that much you can do in a hospital changing room. That asshole Flemming already took over my office. Couldn't even use my own bathroom" said Kate.

"You always look gorgeous" laughed Sara.

"Amelia okay?" asked Kate.

"Yup, having fun with Amy. She didn't even notice me leaving. I'm kind of upset about that" laughed Sara.

"Hope she takes to this new nanny you appointed as well as she did with Amy" said Kate.

"She's great... you'll love her babe. By the way, all the security and reference checks came back great. Everybody we spoke to loves her. I think we made the right choice. She'll fit in well" said Sara.

"She gay?" asked Kate.

"Does it matter?" asked Sara.

"No, just asking" said Kate.

"Well... I didn't ask but she mentioned an ex-boyfriend. I don't know... I think she pings but I could be wrong" said Sara.

"Well... a Tegan and Sara tour will make up her mind one way or another" laughed Kate.

"No no... she won't be ogling hot girls... or guys... she'll be taking care of the children" said Sara.

"She will but she'll also have plenty of spare time to look around you know" said Kate.

"She's studying long distance... and she's a musician so she'll be writing" said Sara.

"Yeah she'll be studying until the first tour snog" said Kate.

"Kate don't say that... I don't want to play mommy to one of my employees" said Sara sounding upset.

"Don't worry babe... I'll have my eye on her" laughed Kate.

-o-

Kate and Sara sat down at a secluded table in the quiet but quaint little restaurant. Kate ordered a bottle of champaign.

"How was your last day baby?" asked Sara.

"Sar... it was amazing" said Kate with a massive smile.

"Really, what happened? Tell me all about it" said Sara. She loved hearing all about Kate's exciting and challenging days at the hospital.

"Are you sure you want to hear it. Kind of a long story" said Kate.

"Yeah, of course I want to hear it" smiled Sara squeezing Kate's hand.

"Okay... Well, I got called down to the ER. Major trauma calls are always hard for me. It's alway intense you know. It's usually life or death. Flemming's been working on my tits all day. We had a minor surgery scheduled and this call pushed it out. Think he was crabby that I was called and not him. Anyway... where was I... oh yeah... So this kid comes in. Nine years old. He was at the zoo on a school trip and listen to this... he fell into the polar bear enclosure. God knows how... but yeah, he fell into the water. That water gets chilled quite a bit you know because I mean... it's polar bears after all" said Kate.

"Oh my god... go on!" said Sara engrossed in the story.

"Took them a while to get the kid out of the pool. They had to sedate the bears first. Anyway, he didn't try to swim out, he must have lost consciousness. When they pulled him out he wasn't breathing, he had no pulse, he was freezing cold and he was blue. He was dead for all intents and purposes" said Kate.

"Oh no... that's horrible" said Sara with her hand in front of her mouth.

"They pulled him out, started CPR, shocked his heart and got a pulse but they lost it again about 5 minutes from the hospital. They were doing CPR when he got there. I put him on a monitor and nada... flatline... nothing going on... no shockable rhythm. All vitals flat. So we keep doing CPR and we start heating him up. His temp was like 24 degrees at that stage. We start giving him warm oxygen, we put the bear hugger over him, we push warm fluids into every hole we can get. Into his veins, his stomach, into his bladder, made a hole in his chest and pumped it into his pleural cavity to get him warm. We put him on one of those automatic CPR devices and kept pumping. Meanwhile, the monitor stays flat. Complete asystoly" said Kate.

"I don't think I want to hear this... this is so sad" said Sara.

"No, story doesn't end here. So Flemming is mulling around being a nuisance. I check the kid's pupils and dickhead pipes up 'Dead eyes'. I yell at him and said he's dead when I say he is and I pretty much boot him out of the ER. Meanwhile we're heating and we're pumping and we're pushing air into his lungs but his temperature is just not going up fast enough" said Kate.

"But... how long can you keep going? What about brain damage?" asked Sara.

"He was hypothermic which means that the body can go without a heartbeat for a much longer time. The brain is... well... on ice for a lack of a better term. But time is of the essence and of course you can't keep going forever. Anyway... half an hour of CPR at the hospital and the kid is still not warm enough to shock should we get a shockable rhythm. He's still flatlining. I kept seeing Amelia in front of me" said Kate suddenly softer after her animated story telling. She stared out in front of her for a second.

"Oh God..." said Sara.

"I knew that we just weren't getting this kid warm fast enough... we were losing him... So, I made the call to put him on bypass to heat him up faster. We scrambled to get an OR and I went to speak to the mother as they kept pumping on his chest. I told her that we haven't been able to get Ethan's heart to pump again but that I still believed he had a chance, a slim one but a chance. I explained the procedure to her and she asked me if I had kids... When I told her I had a little girl she burst out crying and hugged me... I made my way to the OR where the kid was already being prepped. I did the procedure, I cannulated a vein and an artery in his groin and the machine started taking over his circulation. We switched off the automatic CPR device and suddenly, with that constant 100 loud thrusts per minute noise made by the thumper gone it was so quiet, just the continuous humming of the bypass machine and the monotonous beeeep of the heart monitor. His temp went up pretty fast... we reached 30 degrees, that's the temp where we can start shocking him if there's any kind of shockable rhyhm. Monitor stayed flat though. We were all just standing there hoping for a miracle, staring at the monitor willing it to beep" said Kate staring out in the distance.

"Tell me this ends well" said Sara now in tears.

"Ladies, can I take your order?" said a waiter.

Kate held her hand out and put her finger up.

"Not now!" said Sara not taking her eyes off Kate. She shooed the guy away with her hand.

Kate continued. "I tell myself that I'm not giving up... if that was Amelia on that table I would want them to keep going... to keep trying until every single option was exhausted. Next thing Flemming enters. Grabs the page with the blood test results and tells me that he sees no reason whatsoever to keep trying... that this kid was gone. He tells the team to stop resuscitation efforts. I tell him that "he's not dead until he's warm and dead" but the asshole keeps gunning. Tells us we need to free up the OR for his surgery. The very small, non life saving procedure that got pushed out mind you. I tell him this is my case and that he should get the fuck out of my OR. Meanwhile the kid's temp is up to 34 and we stop warming to protect the brain. There's still nothing on the monitor. I check his pupils and it's sluggish but it's contracting... barely. Next moment he stats having some heart muscle contractions but nothing shockable, still no actual cardiac output. It's good though, shows the heart may be waking up you know. This goes on for half a minute and he flatlines again. We pump him full of adrenaline and eventually he shows some kind of activity again but after a minute... asystole. By this time Flemming is losing his shit. Tells me to call it and get the hell out of there. I tell him again that I do not think we're done and I will call it when I see fit. He tells me that "this child is dead... warm and dead" said Kate now upset.

"What an asshole..." said Sara.

"I'm pretty much in tears by now and I tell Karev to call security to get this dick out of my OR. Weber comes in and I give him the lowdown. Flemming keeps interrupting with "call it, he's gone". Weber looks at him, then looks at me and says. "Dr Morgan, you run this case as you see fit. Dr Flemming, may I remind you that this is one of our most senior and respected doctors you're talking to. I think you have patients to attend to. Everybody is smiling, just itching to applaud I think. The next moment the kid has a shockable rhythm. We defibrillate him but nothing holds, I'm starting to think we've lost him. His heart is too weak, we're too late. I can get it together to say it… to call it. Suddenly there's heart activity again and we shock him again, and again, and again…. And then suddenly he converts… we finally get a sinus rhythm on the monitor. I'm running on complete adrenaline now and I just burst into tears…. We leave it for a few minutes and the rhythm holds. Here's the tricky part, we started to wean him off bypass to see if his heart can hold its own. Every time we lowered the bypass his pressure dropped like a rock and then bounced back. It was amazing to see. Think I held my breath through all of it. Anyway… we got him off bypass slowly, strong pulses, good BP... He's recovering in the PICU after a total of 59 minutes of in hospital CPR" said Kate smiling.

"Oh my god that's amazing Kate…. Is he… Is he going to be okay though?" asked Sara through tears.

"Well… right now we're keeping his body temperature down at 34 to protect his brain but his EEG looks as well as can be expected. He's doing remarkably well all things considered. He's still in a coma, on the vent but I'm very hopeful that he will make a full recovery. Right now there's no definates but I'm hoping... He's got an amazing pediatric neurologist taking care of him now. He'll probably need a lot of occupational therapy but I think he's going to be okay" said Kate.

"You're amazing" said Sara softly.

"It was a team effort" said Kate.

"Yeah well you're all amazing" smiled Sara.

"I know this is incredibly rude but would it be okay if I called the PICU really quick to find out how he's doing?" asked Kate.

"Of course baby… holding thumbs" said Sara.

"Abby hey, just phoning to find out how Ethan is doing?" said Kate into the phone.

"Yeah… uh huh… okay… that's great. I'll try and sneak in tomorrow to check on him…. Really? Bring the popcorn this is going to get entertaining….. anyway speak to you later Abs… take care of our miracle boy" laughed Kate.

"He's doing great. He's stable. Still on the vent obviously but he's stable, thank god" said Kate.

"That's fantastic. What was the popcorn comment about?" asked Sara.

"Apparently the chief is super pissed off with Flemming after he made some kind of comment about him protecting me. This was before he knew the kid pulled through of course. Apparently 3 people on the resus team put in a complaint about how he handled the near drowning and how he's been treating everyone this week" said Kate.

Kate's phone rang. "Speaking of which…. Dr Weber. I'm really sorry Sar… I need to take this" said Kate.

"Do you really?" asked Sara.

"Sar please" said Kate.

"Go ahead, I'm going to the ladies" said Sara.

"Kate Morgan" said Kate and winked at Sara.

Sara came back a few minutes and found Kate looking a bit shaken up.

"Baby what's wrong, everything okay?" asked Sara, fearing that the unthinkable has happened to Kate's patient.

"Weber fired Flemming" said Kate and took a large swig of her campaign.

"Oh good" said Sara.

"Yes and no I guess" said Kate folding up her napkin and getting up.

"Where are you going babe?" asked Sara.

"I'll be back in a minute… need the ladies" said Kate and gave Sara a quick kiss on the cheek. Sara watched her walk away. She knew by the way her shoulders hung that something was bothering her. She could read Kate's body language perfectly by now. Sara stared at the serviette between the knife and fork on the table where Kate's hand was a minute ago. She loved Kate with everything in her and she knew that no matter how much Kate pretended not to be upset, this suspension was killing her.

Kate softly touched Sara's shoulder before sitting down opposite her a few minutes later.

"He asked you to come back didn't he?" said Sara.

Kate looked down. "Yeah, he did" she said softly.

Sara sighed and took Kate's hand in hers. Kate looked up into Sara's brown eyes glistening with tears.

"It's okay babe… do what you have to do. We'll be okay" said Sara.

"I did what I had to do…" said Kate.

"Oh sweetie… God I'm going to miss you" said Sara and looking on the verge of tears.

"No Sar…. I told him no… I told him I already have other commitments" said Kate.

"You what?" said Sara looking up.

"I told him no… I'll be back in six months but right now I have other commitments" said Kate sitting back and folding her legs.

"He must be pissed off" said Sara.

"They can't fuck me around like this Sara…. One moment I'm enemy number one and the next I'm their hero. No… I'm taking a stand" said Kate.

"Kate I know how hard this is on you… I know how much you love your job. And I love you so much for doing this. For putting our family first" said Sara.

"I was so excited about getting out of there actually. The whole week I've been bragging about my extended vacation a.k.a. suspension. But then today… when I felt that incredible rush of saving a life… Not just saving a life but saving it against all odds…. And for the first time I felt sad… that I wouldn't get to do that… wouldn't be making a difference for six months" said Kate looking sad.

"But you will be making a difference for me and Amelia…. and Tegan" said Sara.

Kate nodded. "Thanks Sar… I'm making the right decision, I know it" said Kate.

"I want you to know, that I'll accept whatever you choose to do honey" said Sara.

"I've made my decision Sar. Only problem is that I have to go in for another week to hand over to the new replacement since Flemming is toast" said Kate.

"Oh" said Sara looking disappointed.

"I know… launch is in 6 days. I told Weber I could only give him 5 days" said Kate.

Sara sighed, relieved that she would have Kate with her on launch day.

"It would be good to follow up on Ethan anyway. We're getting this one back" smiled Kate.

"Ladies, are you ready to order?" asked a waiter.

"Yes! Finally. I'm starving" smiled Kate and winked at Sara.

"Babe… if you need to work a few extra days I'd understand" said Sara.

"No… I made a promise. I'll be right there with you on launch day" said Kate and kissed Sara's hand.

"I got you a gift" said Sara.

"Oh… wow, you didn't have to do that" said Kate.

Sara looked up and saw a twenty something girl standing next to the table.

"HI Sara, I'm a big fan, can I please have a photo with you" said the girl.

Sara closed her eyes and clenched her jaw.

"Sara" said the girl.

"We're just in the middle of something. Can we do this later?" asked Sara, trying to be polite.

"Um… it's just that we're leaving now and…" said the girl.

"I'm sorry, in that case I can't" said Sara.

"But… Sara it's just going to take a minute" said the girl.

Sara was starting to lose it again. "We're right smack bang in the middle of a private conversation. I'm sorry but I'm not going to interrupt that further for a photo" said Sara.

"I'm sorry" said Kate.

The bodyguard sitting a few tables away got up.

"Miss Quin, everything okay?" he said.

"Sure, thanks Jim" said Kate.

The girl looked super disappointed. "Oh for God sake let's just do the photo" said Sara. "Awesome, you too Dr. Kate?" said the girl.

"Oh no no thanks, I'll take the photo" said Kate.

Sara got up posed with a half smile and sat back down.

"Thank you… I'm sorry for interrupting your conversation" said the girl and left.

Sara put her head in her hands. "Fuck I'm such a bitch" said Sara.

"No you're not… you're a sweetie" said Kate and peeped down under Sara's hands.

"And you're quite the celeb now. The fans just love you" smiled Sara looking up. Kate smiled.

"You're blushing" said Sara and touched Kate's cheek.

Kate shyly looked up into Sara's eyes.

"More campaign?" she asked.

"Trying to get me drunk Dr Morgan?" asked Sara.

"I can try can't I" joked Kate.

"I was saying before we were so rudely interrupted, that I got you a gift" said Sara.

Kate smiled wide.

Sara took a box out of her bag and handed it to Kate.

"I knew you would be sad to leave your job for a while" said Sara.

Kate excitedly ripped the wrapping open.

"Oh my gosh… I've wanted one of these for ages. It's the best stethoscope on the market Sar… the most expensive too. How did you know I wanted this?" smiled Kate.

"Little birdy called Abby told me which one to get. I wanted to get you something that would remind you of your passion. Something medical that you could use outside of the hospital and something that's a very personal item for a physician" said Sara.

"It's awesome… it's perfect… oh and… it's engraved?" said Kate and looked at the stylish and non-obvious engraving on the tube going from the bell. "Dr Kate Morgan…. That's so cool… thanks baby" smiled Kate.

"There's something on the back" said Sara. Kate turned it around. A small heart and SKQ was engraved at the back.

"I love it! I love it, love it, love it" said Kate and leaned over to kiss Sara.

"Now I'll think of you every time I use this" smiled Kate. She was like a kid with a new toy and couldn't stop looking at it.

"Can't wait to try it out… maybe tonight?" asked Kate and looked up shyly.

"Oh we're going to play Dr? Dr Morgan you naughty doctor you" winked Sara.

"I don't have to play Doctor" laughed Kate.

"Okay we'll play naughty nurse" laughed Sara.

"You make me laugh… I love that. Let's eat and get out of here" smiled Kate.

A/N: Long chapter but I wanted to show Sara and Kate's relationship and how Kate shares everything with Sara. Let's hope Kate doesn't get bullied back to work. Review pleeeease!
