Hummingbirds and Butterflies
Summary: Trina and Cam notice something new with Josslyn during a slumber party.
"I'm glad we're doing this." Trina said from her place on Josslyn's queen sized bed. Her hand dug into the popcorn bowl as she popped a handful in her mouth. "This is just what we all need after everything."
Josslyn smiled from her spot beside her friend, letting her hair loose from it's shoulder braid. "I know, right?" Her eyes flickered over to Cam who was sitting upside down in her desk chair. "You know, you could just sit on the bed with us like a normal person."
Cam's head turned torward the door, his soft blond hair falling over his forehead with the movement. "And be caught by your stepfather or your guard?" He shuddered. "Nah."
Josslyn raised a delicate eyebrow. "You're scared of Sonny and Tony?" She asked incredulously. "Sonny wouldn't have let you stay over if he didn't trust you. And Tony's a big old softie."
"Yeah, he's a softie toward you. He'd probably think I was corrupting you if he caught me in that bed."
His two friends exchanged amused glances, Trina shrugging a slim shoulder lightly, tossing her braids back behind her. "Well, whatever. It's your choice." She announced airly before standing up and turning her attention on Josslyn. "Is it okay if I use your bathroom to get changed into my pajamas?"
The blonde nodded. "Yeah, that's fine. You can take a shower if you want." She looked back at Cam. "You can shower and change in...Dev's..." She cut herself off, swallowing thickly. "You can use the bathroom across the hall."
Trina and Cam both entered the room fifteen minutes later, Trina's hair in a protective head scarf and Cam dressed in plaid pajama pants and a soccer t-shirt. Josslyn smiled at the two before hurrying into the bathroom to shower and dress for the night. She showered and washed her hair before stepping out and getting dressed around twenty minutes later. She pulled her hair up into a towel for it to dry before she walked out of the bathroom. "So have you figured out what we should watch." She asked.
Trina nodded her head at the tv where Netflix was open on the screen for Julie and the Phantoms.
Josslyn beamed at that and started it as she walked over to the vanity table, pulling the towel from her head and allowing her blonde hair to tumble over her shoulders so she could brush it. "This show is amazing." She gushed, as she moved back to the bed, unaware of two sets of eyes on her. "I've already watched it around five times."
"When did you get the tattoos?" Cam blurted out, eyes on Josslyn's ribcage still.
The girl's eyebrow furrowed in confusion before she touched her side where her pajamas, covered in pictures of different breeds of dogs clothed her. She lifted it up to reveal two small tattoos-one a brilliant green and orange hummingbird and the other a bright purple monarch butterfly. "I got them a few weeks ago. After Dev's memorial." She murmured. "I had Tony take me to the tattoo parlor after volleyball practice."
"And your mom and dad were okay with it?" Trina wondered curiously.
Josslyn shrugged. "I mean, I didn't need permission for the tattoos. I'm eighteen now. But yeah. Especially after explained what they meant." She looked at her tattoos, touching them reverently.
"What do they mean?" Cam asked, moving so he sat on the bed with Josslyn and Trina.
Blue eyes lifted to lock on the two in front of her. "When Mike was dying, everyone was talking about moments they knew their loved ones who passed on were there. Butterflies were mentioned and I've read about hummingbirds being seen by people after they lost someone. I even saw them a lot in the months after Oscar died. So after what happened to Dev, I got inspired to get these two. The hummingbird is for Oscar. The butterfly is for Dev."
Trina and Cam's eyes were both shimmering with tears after Josslyn's explanation and she was suddenly pulled into a three way hug.
"That's a great way to remember them." Trina whispered into Josslyn's ear as the three of them hugged.
Cam nodded against her shoulder. "Trina is right, Joss. I'm sure this would make them both happy." He pulled away first.
Josslyn swiped at her tears. "I hope so." She replied with a trembling smile before she grabbed her remote to start Julie and the Phantoms up again from where they'd paused it. "Now come on. Let's watch our show."
When Carly peered into the bedroom later that night as she was heading to the kitchen for some water, she found her daughter curled up between Cam and Trina, all of them fast asleep. She smiled at the site of them and shut the door gently. She truly thought the kids would be alright despite everything. After all, they had each other.
