Clint's POV

Making his way back to base was a miserable walk. The rain had not let up at all while he waited. In the end, he had to get soaked to the skin for his lack of foresight.

He was only another five minutes from the base when he heard a pained whimper. It had him glancing around trying to find the source. While not a human whimper he still wanted to help. What human could leave an animal to suffer after all?

There was an alley to his right that would hold something in it. Carefully he made his way overlooking for what made the whimper. It didnt take him but a moment to find it. A brown puppy lay under the dumpster.

It had several lacerations across its body. Clint could see the poor thing's ribs it was so skinny. Someone hurt and left this poor thing to die.

Slowly Clint approached and the puppy raised its head. Fearfully it bared its teeth at him. He wished he had saved some of his dinners now. It might have helped the puppy a little bit.

He whispered soft and soothing to the puppy as he held out a hand, "Hey there little one. You look like you could use a friend. How about you let me take care of you?"

The puppy raised its head from where it lay. Bright green eyes looked at him in fear. They seemed to be searching for his soul and debating on whether or not to trust him. Then it curled into itself and allowed Clint to move close enough to gently pick it up.

Carefully he picked up the puppy and cradled it to his chest. There was the softest of whimpers at the movements. The movements brought out as they were making their way towards the SHIELD base. Sneaking into the base was difficult but eventually, he made it into his room.

The first thing he did was put the puppy in the shower. For once he was glad that he was still injured. No one would look twice at him getting more hydrogen peroxide and bandages. He left for a few moments to make a trip to medical.

Surprisingly the nurses didnt seem to mind him asking for more supplies. From there he went to the cafeteria to get extra dinners. It wasn't much just some rice and chicken. Then he returned to his rooms not without gaining some attention from Natasha. She only raised an eyebrow at him in question. He shrugged in answer without saying anything.

She knew what he was doing for it wasnt the first time he rescued a pet from the streets. Hell, he had even come back from Medusa with a Brac Haa puppy. The very same puppy who lived with the eldest members of the Webb family currently.

Clint trusted her not to tell on him to the other members of SHIELD. If Coulson asked her she would probably tell him. If he didnt then Clint would have time to help the puppy heal and find it a home.

Once back in his room he stripped down to his boxers and gave the puppy a bath. Gently he scrubbed at the fur mindful of the wounds. As he washed the pup he decided to name it Lucky. He was lucky that Clint had gone out that evening. Lucky probably wouldn't have lived much longer on the streets.

Once Lucky was clean Clint showered for himself. Then he towered them both dry and picked up Lucky again. They went back into his room and gently laid Lucky on his bed.

He got a few cotton balls and soaked them in hydrogen peroxide. Gently he cleaned the wounds and checked their deepness. While they bled a lot they were not deep enough to need stitches. Whimpers sounded but he wasnt bitten.

Once the wounds were cleaned out he gave lucky the food. Then he laid out on his bed tired but scared to sleep. To his surprise, the puppy curled up against his side once it was done eating. Clint placed a gentle hand behind Lucky's eyes and gave it a scratch. Things would work out he was sure.

Coulson's POV

Rubbing a hand over his face he looked at the email he just received. The nurse in medical sent him a message saying that Clint came to get some basic supplies. If it was any other agent he would have brushed it off. With Clint, though it was so far beyond his normal behavior it was worrying.

Clint was notorious for avoiding medical unless he was dragged there. Which was why Phil was sitting in his living room trying to figure out his agent. Being off base wasnt going to help him at this moment. He could either wait till morning or he could go back to base. Knowing Clint's notorious reputation for getting himself injured he had to go back to the base.

The trip to the base only took fifteen minutes. Agents posted as guards for the evening gave raised eyebrows but didnt comment. It wasnt unusual for him to be called back to base but no one had heard anything about a mission. They likely assumed it had something to do with one of his agents.

A few moments he found Barton's room. He knocked knowing better than to scare his agent. There was a slight grumbling from the other side. Then shuffling and a soft swear followed by more shuffling.

Phil wanted to sigh. Clint better not have brought someone unauthorized into the base. He really did not want to explain that to Nick.

Finally, the door opened to reveal Clint in a white t-shirt and baggy shorts. He looked like once again he wasnt sleeping. Interesting was that on the shirt seemed to be fur. Light brown fur stood out on the white shirt.

Internally he sighed. Well at least it wasnt a person but where was the animal. He couldn't see or hear it.

Clint asked his voice hoarse, "Coulson what do you need?"

Phil answered looking him over, "I got an email about you visiting medical. If an agent visits medical unexpectedly the handler is immediately notified. I wanted to see if you had been injured when you went out earlier. However, I can see you are uninjured. Where is the animal, Barton?"

The blond blinked in surprise before he asked not meeting the other's eyes, "How did you know?"

"White shirt," Phil said with amusement, "There's brown fur on your shirt and you only sleep in your white shirts."

There was a sharp yip and a brown blur put itself in between them. A brown puppy had its lip lifted and a low directed at him.

Clint startled, "Lucky!"

Great... Clint named it. Phil sighed this was going to be difficult. There was no way that Nick would allow a puppy to stay on base.
