Chapter 216
Kate woke up startled. The dark room confused her. She closed her eyes tight trying to figure remember where she was and sighed when everything came back to her a second later. She felt around for the bedside lamp and switched it on. She moved the fingers of her injured hand around. Her wrist and her hand felt swollen and it felt as if the cast was squeezing too tight but Kate tried to ignore it. She slowly sat up and looked at her phone. 3.37pm. She plonked back down on the pillows and put her fingers in her neck. Her pulse seemed to have calmed down a bit and headache was gone although she did still feel a bit groggy. She reached for the bottle of water Sara put on the bedside table and gulped up most of it in one go. She looked up at the IV bag that was long since empty. She slowly peeled the plaster off her arm and slid the cannula out of her vein. A tiny trickle of blood left her arm and Kate jumped up to get a tissue in the bathroom. To her surprise the dizziness she had felt the previous day and earlier that morning seemed to be gone. She signed and looked at herself in the bathroom mirror. The dark circles under her eyes seemed to be fading and she had a little bit of colour in her cheeks. She still didn't look her best but she definitely looked and felt a lot better than in the morning.
"Hi there" smiled Kate walking into the living room looking and smelling fresh after a long, hot shower. She looked nothing like a doctor at that moment, wearing a pair of skinny jeans, a light grey T-shirt a pair of hotel slippers.
"Dr Morgan, how are you feeling?" asked Kirsten the nanny.
"So much better thanks, and call me Kate please!" smiled Kate and stretched her back like a cat in the sun.
"Okay…. Kate" smiled Kirsten blushing and looking down. Kirsten didn't know what it was about Kate but she left her with a belly full of butterflies every time she smiled at her. "I'm not gay…" Kirsten told herself a million times.
"Just can't tie my laces! Frustrating. Hence the slippers" laughed Kate.
"Kids taking their afternoon nap?" she asked walking up to the counter in the kitchen to make herself some coffee.
"Yup. They're such easy kids. Went down without much of a fight. They've been down for a while, should be up in the next half hour" said Kristen.
"Good, I miss them" laughed Kate taking a coffee cup out of the cupboard.
"Coffee? What do they have to eat in here?" she asked over her shoulder while looking through the cupboards.
"Um… no thanks. Can I get you something from room service?" asked Kirsten.
"Nah… found an apple. Not that hungry. Wow, nice hotel. Feels like an apartment more than a hotel" said Kate looking at the beautiful, modern kitchen and living room for the first time.
"Let me help you with that" said Kirsten taking the cup out of Kate's hand. The fresh smell of Kate's body wash overwhelming her senses.
"Oh that's okay, I don't need help. Need to learn to work around this thing" smiled Kate. Kirsten felt her stomach make a flip flop.
"I insist. Check out the outside patio. It's got a great view of central park" said Kirsten, suddenly desperate to get Kate away from her.
Kate walked onto the patio and felt the warm June breeze through her still wet hair. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She was so relieved that she was feeling a bit better. She was starting to think that she would need to go back to the ER for some more blood tests but she could feel that she was over the worst of it.
"Here you go" smiled Kirsten, cup in one hand and baby monitor in the other.
"What a beautiful day that I just slept through. I miss New York, did my residency here. Not that I saw that much sunlight during that time either" said Kate laughing.
"You love your job don't you" smiled Kirsten.
"I do… strange but true" shrugged Kate.
"You must miss it" said Kirsten.
"I didn't think I did but last night, when I was in the ER and the EMS guys came rushing in there with some poor bleeding girl… I just wanted to jump in and help. But I'm enjoying the time off actually. I really needed it. Was starting to burn out" said Kate.
"I'm considering med school" said Kristen. It was partially true but she was leaning towards law school after a year off. She was just keen to impress Kate.
"Oh, I didn't know that. Why do you want to be a doctor?" asked Kate.
"I don't know… I love working with people" said Kirsten.
Kate laughed. "Well… let me tell you, sometimes I think that you really shouldn't like them, because they really can piss you off. You see people on what is probably one of the worst days of their lives, especially in trauma. That brings out a lot of things in people, sometimes good but sometimes the very worst in them... not to mention the families, friends and lovers"
"But you like people" said Kirsten.
"I do… but you will probably notice that I'm kind of… shy. I like making a difference more than anything. And I like the thrill…. of achieving the almost impossible. I like that... focus you know. Also, there's no better feeling in the world than saving a life" smiled Kate and looked down.
"Sounds incredible" said Kirsten and swallowed hard.
"One thing though... you need to want this with everything in you. It must be your singular focus. Your burning desire must be to become a physician. You need to be willing to do anything to get there. Anything... give up any resemblance of a normal life for a while. Because if it's not... you're not going to make it. If you don't have that passion for it, don't do it. There's plenty of other great careers out there" said Kate.
Kirsten smiled, completely intrigued by the dashing, smart, sexy, funny surgeon in front of her.

"She still hasn't called" said Sara looking worried. They were on their way back to the hotel but they were stuck in the horrendous Manhattan rush hour.
"Maybe she's still sleeping" said Tegan. Sara dialed Kirsten's number.
"No answer…. Why the fuck isn't she answering" said Sara sounding worried.
"We'll be there in five minutes Sar. She's probably busy changing diapers or something" said Tegan not looking particularly worried.
Sara dialed Kate's number. "Kate's not answering either" she said.
"You told her to put her phone on silent Sar" said Tegan.
-o-
Five minutes later Sara burst into the hotel suite and looked around the empty living room. She opened the door to her and Kate's room. Housekeeping must have been around because the bed was neatly made, Kate was nowhere to be seen but her phone lay on the nightstand.
"Kate! Babe" Sara shouted as Tegan and Lindsey walked in behind her.
"Where is she?" said Sara sounding scared. Images of her and Erin's kidnapping suddenly bubbled up inside her head and she was breathing hard and fast.
"Sara calm down" said Tegan softly.
Sara heard laughing coming from outside and sprinted towards the patio.
She stopped at the door when she saw Kate sitting on a lounger with Amelia bouncing on her lap and let out a sigh of relief and closed her eyes.
"Hey babe" said Kate looking up smiling.
"Where have you been!" exclaimed Sara, close to tears.
"Huh?" said Kate looking confused.
"I called you… and I called you Kirsten… why didn't you answer? I even called the phone inside" said Sara close to screaming.
"I'm sorry… I… I must have left my phone inside" said Kirsten looking flustered.
"When you have these kids with you your phone should be on, and by your side at all times. I need to be able to contact you at all times. Dammit Kirsten this is important! AND I told you to tell Kate to call me when she wakes up!" said Sara.
"Sorry… I completely forgot" said Kirsten looking pale suddenly.
"Sara…. Kids" said Tegan calmly. She didn't like fighting in front of the kids.
"Get inside… both of you" said Sara.
Tegan took Amelia from Kate and made a horrified face. Kate stifled a laugh before going inside.
"Sweetie, I'm so sorry… I didn't want to bother you while you were mid interview or something" said Kate.
"I was worried sick" said Sara.
"I'm really sorry Sara… I'm so, so sorry" said Kirsten.
"It's okay… You can go now… see you tomorrow" said Sara.
"Are you sure? I can bath them if you want. Or maybe you guys want to go out for dinner?" said Kirsten.
"No. I'm sure" said Sara.
Kirsten sulked out of the suite.
Sara plonked down on a couch and put her hands in front of her face.
"I'm sorry" whispered Kate rubbing Sara's back.
Sara shook her head. "It's okay… I was just… I was really scared for a minute… I know, irrationally scared but scared" said Sara.
"I understand… I'm sorry, I wasn't thinking" said Kate again.
"I'm not really even mad at you… I'm mad at Kirsten. I specifically told her to ask you to call me when you woke up. How are you feeling?" asked Sara taking Kate's face in her hands.
"So much better. I think it was one of those 24 hour things. Still a little wobbly but better. Had an insane amount of sleep" smiled Kate.
"That's good. Fever seems to be gone but you're still a bit pale though" said Sara touching Kate's forehead.
"I'm fine Sar. Promise, I'm feeling better" smiled Kate.
"I'm so happy to hear that" sighed Sara and kissed Kate's healthy palm.
"What do you want to do tonight? Do you want to go out to dinner?" asked Kate as Sara leaned back in her arms.
"You know what… I really just want to be with you and Amelia. Why don't we get room service and just watch a movie on the couch or something. We can do dinner tomorrow. I want you to get over this thing first" said Sara.
"I'd love that" said Kate and kissed Sara's cheek.
A few minutes later Sara and Kate joined Tegan, Lindsey and the kids outside.
"Sorry about that" Sara blushed.
"No problem, glad you sorted things out" said Tegan.
"How'd it go today my little rock stars?" asked Kate.
"It went great thanks. I had a tiny little freak out before the first interview but I took the tablet you gave me and I was fine… Helped that it was radio and not TV or a live performance" said Tegan.
"You were great Tegan. You really were. Well done" smiled Sara.
"She's right babe. You were phenomenal" smiled Lindsey and kissed Tegan.
"Thanks I guess…. One day at a time right" said Tegan.
"You're going to be just fine Tee" said Kate and squeezed Tegan's shoulder.
"And you? How are you feeling? Did you get some rest?" asked Tegan.
"I did thanks. I feel about a thousand times better" said Kate.
Tegan's phone started ringing.
"Oh hey, it's Erin" Tegan smiled and answered.
"Hey E… yeah great… oh… really…. Listen hang on a second" said Tegan and walked into the living room.
Sara shrugged when Kate gave her a questioning look.
A few minutes later Tegan walked back onto the patio looking shaken up.
"Tegan? What's wrong?" asked Sara looking worried.
"Nothing… nothing at all" said Tegan.
"Oh good" said Sara.
"First class was great huh" said Tegan.
"Yeah awesome… if you forget about that time the guy keeled over and Kate had to resuscitate him" said Sara rolling her eyes.
"Well… you better get used to it" said Tegan.
"Used to what?" said Sara.
"Listen guys… I fly a lot and I swear this was the first time anybody needed my help… Okay second but the first was just a nose bleed" said Kate.
"No… used to first class" smiled Tegan.
"What are you saying?" said Sara and swallowed hard, her pulse suddenly doing triple time.
Kate and Lindsey both looked confused.
"What am I saying? Number one fucking single baby…. Oh shit sorry for swearing" laughed Tegan.
"What?" Sara shrieked and jumped up.
Erin was silent but on speaker phone in Tegan's hand all the time.
"Congratulations guys!" yelled Erin.
Sara hugged Tegan tight.
"Oh my god…. I can't believe it… are you sure?" asked Sara.
"Hundred percent" laughed Tegan still hugging Sara.
Kate and Lindsey joined the group hug a few seconds later.
"Whoooo hooooo" yelled Tegan and grabbed Lindsey for a passionate kiss.
Casey and Ryan were both laughing at the spectacle but Amelia started crying, a bit overwhelmed by all the commotion.
"I'm ordering some Champagne… right now" said Kate and kissed Sara three times with Amelia in Sara's arms.
Tegan started wheezing from all the excitement and quickly pulled out her inhaler and took a puff.
"You okay Tee?" asked Kate concerned as always.
"Yeah yeah, just too much excitement!" grinned Tegan now breathing better.
Sara's phone was beeping and ringing non-stop a few seconds later as news of the twins' achievement reached their friends, family and colleagues.
Tegan said goodbye to Erin and tried to answer some of the phone calls and messages. She had a massive grin on her face as her phone went nuts.
"Oh Tee… Tom says we're number one on the main charts of all 4 of the biggest markets. US, UK, Canada, Australia and then a few of the smaller ones. Man… I'm blown away... I think I'm in shock" said Sara sitting down her hands shaking.
"We did it Sar… holy shit we did it" laughed Tegan.
Room service delivered some snacks and Champagne and Lindsey popped open the bottle.
"To our number one super stars" said Kate and held a glass up.
"Cheers to that" said Lindsey and kissed Tegan.
"You know we could not have done this without the two of you right" said Tegan.
Kate and Sara both just smiled.
"We love you... so damn much. Thank you" said Sara.
"It feels as if we've won the... world cup of music or something" laughed Tegan.
"After all these years... we finally did it Tee. And it was all worth it. All of it" smiled Sara and hugged Tegan yet again.
"You guys want to go out for a little celebratory dinner?" asked Tegan.
"Ah no thanks, Kate's not hundred percent yet so we're going to take it easy in front of the TV with some room service. Can we do dinner tomorrow? I have some Masterchef Junior episodes to catch up on. Maybe Amelia can get some tips so she can cook for us one day" laughed Sara.
"Okay fine! Party poopers" joked Tegan.
"You guys go, we'll babysit. You deserve some time out" said Kate.
"Are you sure?" asked Tegan.
"Yeah, go have fun" smiled Sara.
"Babe? You up for it?" asked Tegan.
Lindsey turned to Tegan and whispered into her ear. "We can go for a drink and a quick bite... but I want you in bed... against me... inside of me... soon"
Tegan blushed and took a deep breath.
"Let's skip dinner altogether then" she whispered back.
"No... you need to eat because you need all your strength for what I have planned for you. It's been waaay too long" whispered Lindsey seductively and pinched Tegan's bum. Tegan felt the heat and excitement build up between her legs.
"Okay guys... come on bath time, we need to get moving" said Tegan hastily and picked Ryan up.
"We'll do it" said Sara.
"Yeah you and the one armed bandit here?" joked Tegan.
"Yeah, it's my fault I sent the nanny away for the night after all" shrugged Sara.
"It's no problem, they can be a handful. We'll get them settled and then go" said Lindsey.
An hour and a half later the kids were finally bathed, fed and in bed. Tegan stepped out of the bathroom looking dashing in a grey tailored, slim fit suit and a black, soft, silk shirt underneath.
"You look fucking amazing" said Lindsey and kissed Tegan. Tegan took Lindsey's mouth in hers and seductively slid her tongue into her mouth while running her fingers through Lindsey's hair.
"So do you... you're so fucking beautiful it hurts" she whispered with her forehead against Lindsey's.
"Let's get out of here" smiled Lindsey taking Tegan's hand. She was so incredibly happy and relieved to finally have Tegan back... all of her.
A/N: Ahhh a happy day that will hopefully end even happier for Tegan. Seems like the nanny may have the hots for Kate. Remember to check out the previous chapter posted today too. Sometimes people only read the latest one. Pop me a review please!
