Chapter 273
Sax stepped away from Kate's bed after examining her. "Let's talk outside" she said to Kate's family. They stepped outside to the nurse's station.
"I've decided to keep Kate intubated and sedated for another day or so. She's just not ready yet. Her condition is still very serious. Her blood and CT results came back and I'm not satisfied, her infection count is up and her platelets are down. Nothing to freak out about just yet but I want to make sure we nip this in the bud early. I'm going to give her another unit of blood and some plasma and start her on another anti-biotic" said Sax to Kate's family.
"Let me see her results please" said John.
"Dr Morgan, it's not a major complication. She's just not making progress as fast as I hoped. But she's okay. Let's just give her a bit more time alright" Sax smiled reassuringly.
"Okay" said Kate's dad looking troubled. He stepped back into the room and looked at his child again. He took her hand in his. She was still very pale. He saw sick people every day but her couldn't get used to seeing his little girl so helpless with tubes in her mouth and nose, her arms. Drains in her chest and abdomen. Monitors beeping. He hated every second of it and almost convinced himself that that was it for him. Time to retire, he couldn't take the emotional toll of working in a hospital every day anymore. He also knew this feeling would probably pass.
"Come on Kitty Kat… hang in there for Daddy" said John holding Kate's hand. Tears started rolling down his cheeks and he suppressed a sob. Alex put his hand on his father's shoulder.
"She'll be okay Dad" he whispered.
John just nodded and looked back up at the monitors.

That evening things were relatively quiet in the ICU. Neither Tegan nor Sara had woken up again. Their vitals were stable and they were both breathing well with oxygen. The nurses turned them on their sides a few times after a big dose of morphine to improve circulation and prevent bed sores. The physical therapist worked on both without them even knowing.
Alex had finally convinced his parents to go to their hotel room across the street and get some rest because they were completely wrecked. Kate still had a low grade fever, her blood pressure was lower than it should be and her heart rate was elevated. Her blood gasses kept coming back off. He sat next to Kate reading when an alarm startled him. Almost immediately people came rushing into the room shoving him out of the way.
"Get the bed flat, BPs falling off a cliff and she's having runs of v-tach, pulse up to 170" somebody shouted.
People started pushing medication into Kate to get her stable. It wasn't working. Sax came sprinting into the room.
"Talk to me" she said authoritatively.
The resident repeated what he just told the rest of the room.
"Dammit" said Sax listening to Kate's chest.
"Sats are still dropping, she's down to 76 on 100% O2" said the pulmonologist bagging Kate.
"Check the probe see if that number's real" said Sax.
"It's real alright, I've good a good pulse wave form. Down to 73 now" he said.
"Prep an OR" she said urgently.
"I'm getting blood back in the ET tube. She's really hard to bag" said somebody.
"Suction that out and try again, hyperventilate. We don't have time for imaging. She's probably bleeding internally somewhere and she's bleeding in her lungs. Let's get her to the OR now! She's about to arrest" said Sax.
Monitors were still screaming as Kate's bed was pushed out of the doors in a rush. Alex ran after them.
Sonia was frozen next to Sara's bed staring at the door. She was shaking. The curtain between Kate and Sara was open so Sonia saw the whole dramatic ordeal. When she eventually turned back to Sara, her eyes were open. She looked at Sonia questioningly.
"Hi honey" said Sonia trying her best to hide her distress.
Sara pushed away the oxygen mask. "What happened… to that lady?" Sara whispered.
"She… Well, she's very sick sweetie… they… they took her up to surgery" said Sonia, her eyes glistening with tears.
"I know her, don't I?" asked Sara softly. Sonia didn't answer immediately.
"Do I know her mom?"
Sonia stayed quiet for a few more long seconds. "Yeah, you know her Sara"
"Do I love her?"
Sonia tried her best to keep her tears inside and took a few deep breaths. She nodded her head. "You love her more than anything" said Sonia through gritted teeth and erupting emotion.
Sara didn't know why… she didn't remember this woman… but she felt emotion start to completely overcome her. She tried to hold it in but it flowed out and she gave a shuddering sob.
"They'll take good care of her okay… she's going to be okay" said Sonia and kissed Sara's hair.
"Why don't I remember her mom? I felt something… in here… just now but I don't remember her" said Sara weakly putting her hand on her heart.
"The doctors say that your memory could come back any day… just stay positive"
"Is she okay? I'm so scared suddenly" said Sara. Sure enough, her heart rate was suddenly through the roof. Sonia thought it best not to mention Amelia to Sara.
"Just take some deep breaths Sara. They're taking good care of her I'm sure. Go back to sleep" said Sonia and stroke Sara's hair.
"I can't... hurts" breathed Sara and tried to move a bit.
"Take it easy…. Shhhhh"
"What's her name mom? Tell me about her" said Sara softly.
"Her name is Kate Morgan. She's a doctor, a surgeon. You guys got married about six months ago but you've been together for more than two years. You're a great couple." Sonia still didn't say anything about Sara having a child. She didn't want to upset her any more than she already was.
"Wow… didn't think doctors were my type" said Sara.
"Yeah… I guess you made an exception. She's not your average doctor though. She's loves playing music, she surfs, she's an artist… she's so cool Sar"
"Are you saying… that I'm gonna love her?" smiled Sara. She looked tired and worried.
"Yes I am" smiled Sonia.
"I'm going to get one of the doctors to come see you so they can get your pain under control. I'll be back in a minute" said Sonia and kissed Sara's hair.
Sara stared at the ceiling thinking about this woman fighting for her life in surgery, she heard something on the other side of the curtain.
"Sara" somebody said.
"Sweetie, just relax, she's okay"
"Tegan!" Sara said loudly. "Tegan! I'm here… open the curtain"
Lindsey reluctantly opened the curtain. It was clear that Sara didn't have a clue who Lindsey was.
"Teetee" said Sara and tried to sit up.
"Sara, I'm here" said Tegan weakly.
"Are you okay? You look like crap" said Sara.
"Wow, thanks… you don't look much better by the way"
"I can't hear you Tee… can you move her closer please… please" Sara begged.
A nurse came into the room with Sonia.
After negotiations with Sara they moved the beds closer together. Sara could touch Tegan's hand. She squeezed it. It felt amazing to still have that one connection, the most important connection in her life. Her twin.
"Hey you…. I love you" said Tegan looking and sounding weak.
"I love you too" said Sara. She actually blushed. Nineteen year old Sara wasn't used to saying these things to her sister.
A/N: You guys have been kind of quiet? Please send me some feedback. Kate seems to be in trouble!
