Chapter 28: This Is War
"I always knew it was a mistake on my part to change that ungrateful mutt into one of my Hybrids. So much talent, wasted on worthless rubbish." Klaus fumed as he paced inside of the master bedroom.
I felt bad for the gleaming dark wood floor, who were undeniably suffering from Klaus's incessant pacing.
"We just know a couple things. That doesn't mean that Marcel is planning a war. I don't know what kind of deal Tyler accepted, but we need to remain calm." I got up from my place in one of the leather wingback chairs, and placed my hands on Klaus's forearms. That seemed to calm him down a little bit.
"We need to have a plan. Elijah should be summoned. He will want to be including in the preparations. If I know anything about the way I taught Marcellus, it's to fight for what you desire to have." Klaus muttered, and removed himself from my hold. He walked over to his dresser and retrieved his cell phone.
I heard the familiar beep of the dial tone as Klaus placed the phone to his ear. Elijah's baritone voice answered with crisp precision, and Klaus began explaining the current situation that was unfolding. All I could think of was was what deal Tyler made with Marcel. The Tyler I knew never played with fire, but this one had been the one to light the match.
"Yes, brother. How is Hayley? Tell Georgiana to place a border spell until we can compile a strategy. Please come to the plantation. We have much to discuss. Farewell." Klaus ended the call swiftly, and then returned his attention to me.
"You are under my protection. But while you are here, you are not to go out alone without a guard. I will assign a personal guard to rotate the clock. When you're with me, you are safe. Alone, you are as vulnerable as ever." Klaus informed me, with not a hint of change in his voice. It was steel.
"Why do I need to be protected?" I asked.
"Tyler wants you, Caroline. And I have a very strong feeling he will do anything to have you back. I want you to be with company at all times. You will not leave this house without a guardian. Are we clear?" Klaus demanded, I decided there was no changing his mind once it had been made.
"Okay. I won't go out alone." I obliged with his wishes. He had a valid point and good reasoning for such a request.
"Good." Klaus confirmed my agreement. Silence lingered between us. To be completely honest, it was still a bit awkward between Klaus and I when it came to moments such as these. I wanted it to be easier to be around one another.
"Why did you ask me to be here with you?" I asked Klaus, whose head shot up with surprise. I knew that Klaus 'fancied' me, but I had always wondered why. We were so different, and yet I felt so drawn to him. There seemed to be a an irreconcilable reason for my gravitation towards him, but I had always questioned my own motives.
"When I met you that day in Mystic Falls, I thought that you were just another baby vampire who wanted to defend her friends. A reasonable instinct, I understand. But you held more than just a will to save them. You had compassion beyond anything I had ever seen. I was drawn to you as soon my eyes met yours. I tried to deny my feelings, but they overwhelmed me. For the first time in my immortal life, I felt like I was drowning." Klaus looked me straight me in the eye. His gaze was intense, each word spoken with a careful pace.
"I've been keeping something from you." I breathed, and Klaus walked closer to me.
"I love Tyler, I do. And we dated for a quite a while. He was my true first love, but we've been drifting away from one another for a long time. His determination to seek revenge on you has turned him from the small town werewolf that I loved into a monster that was not even human anymore." I tried to keep the tears from falling, but I couldn't keep them from teetering onto my cheeks.
"I believe this hurt is also because of my interference into your life. And for that I am deeply sorry, Caroline." Klaus sat down next to me on the small window seat. We were mere inches apart.
"When Rebekah put that spell on me, I fell head over heels for you in a matter of days. But I can't keep from thinking that maybe I had feelings for you before the spell. I think that I felt something too, and the spell just intensified the feeling. And I think Tyler knows. It might be just a small crush, but you just draw me in like a moth to a flame." I admitted. I heard Klaus swallow, we were so close.
And that's when I kissed him. It wasn't a steamy hot makeout session like when we were in Rome. This was simplistic, with just slight movements of the lips. It was sweet, like honeysuckle in the summer time. I was unaware that Klaus was pulling away until the warmth on my lips receded. I opened my eyes to see him looking at me with a small grin.
"What was that for?" Klaus asked me.
"I wanted to see if it was real. If we were fighting for something that was worth fighting for." I responded.
"What conclusion have you come to then? Are we worth fighting for?" Klaus asked me, his beautiful eyes bearing straight into my soul.
"We are worth every battle that will be fought." I smiled and Klaus laughed, a deep rumble emitting from his chest.
"Caroline, you do understand that this is war will bring bloodshed. It isn't going to be easy, and I will be nosediving head first into battle plans." Klaus gave me a weary expression, the previous excitement in his eyes fading away into dull embers.
"I am going to be fighting with you, right by your side." I replied, and Klaus looked up in surprise.
"You will not be going anywhere near a battle. I cannot risk losing you. Tyler is after you, and I don't know what I would do with myself if he got his paws on you." Klaus instructed me.
"I want to help, though."
"You can help by keeping yourself safe."
Tick-tock. Tick-tock. Tick-tock.
The sound of the hands of the grandfather clock in the plantation's study was daunting. Everything was eerily quiet as Klaus and I waited for Elijah to arrive. I had changed into something more comfortable; a light blue cropped sweater, black leggings, and a pair of light blue Toms. My eyes traveled around the room, looking at all the exquisite detailing of the room. Klaus awaited his brother patiently, his broad back pressed against the large oak desk.
Finally, the study's large French doors opened in a flurry of motion. In walked Elijah, dressed impeccably in a designer suit, per usual.
"I am here, Niklaus. No need for such a grimace. Hello again, Miss Forbes." Elijah turned to me for a swift greeting, before returning his focus to Klaus, who indeed had a smirk on his face.
"Hello Elijah. And please, call me Caroline. Miss Forbes is too formal for the circumstances." I responded, and Elijah nodded curtly in compliance.
"The circumstances that we have come to are absolutely incredulous." Klaus huffed.
"Do you happen to have a plan, or a strategy yet, Niklaus? We cannot simply wage war on an assumption that has joined in alliance with Marcel Gerard. If we do not pace ourselves, we risk more harm than helpfulness." Elijah mused.
"He threatened Caroline. And any threat made towards her is a threat to me. Tyler has an brewing vendetta against me; Marcel does as well. Together, they could cause mass destruction beyond compare. We must eliminate the threat. Now." Klaus growled.
"Your anger and aggression towards this certain issue will be the cause of your own destruction if you don't stop festering in hatred." Elijah's warning to his brother was twined with truth. Klaus was in a raging fury.
"Then what should we do, then? I certainly hope you have some ideas, because I do not." Klaus snapped at Elijah. I gave him an exasperated look, but Klaus ignored me.
"We need to act rationally." I said aloud. Elijah looked at me in surprise, as did Klaus. I usually never intervened in arguments between people, and not ever between the Mikaelson brothers.
"Let us deliberate this, sweetheart." Klaus gave me a look that screamed authority. But I wasn't backing down. Rising from the dark leather couch, I made my way towards the desk where Klaus stood rigid, anticipating my next move with his sea-green eyes.
"Where are Marcel and his community of vampires located?" I questioned the Mikaelson brothers. Elijah looked to Klaus, before answering me.
"Marcellus has taken up residence The Abattoir, our family's previous home in the French Quarter. He lives there with what we now consider an army. His alliances with the witches of this town works against our favor, but our long-standing associates will help defrost the tension." Elijah informed me, before looking to Klaus for the Original Hybrid's personal opinion.
"The bloody bastard took over our home, and calls himself the King of New Orleans. Now has he not only threatened the safety of my children, but the life of Caroline as well. I will personally rip his heart out through his chest." Klaus threatened. I could see the anger that he felt for Marcel boiling in his eyes.
"Marcel did not directly threaten my life directly. All we know is that he reached out to Tyler, who has a vendetta against me. No plans of theirs have been officially been put into action yet, so we do not know the intensity and depth of their alliance. It's all so sudden." I argued.
"Caroline has a valid point, Niklaus. We do not know what Marcellus is planning. It could be days, even weeks, before he takes actions against us. Planning a sudden attack could only hurt us. We need to plan, to think, before we make any true battle plans." Elijah reasoned with Klaus, who's face was still brewing with an angered expression.
"I am the one who raised Marcellus! I taught him the ways of proper war tactics. He knows my ways of strategy, my weaknesses. He rules this city in an iron reign. The people of New Orleans will be no help; everyone is at his beck and call." Klaus spat.
"That's why we need to gain our own allies amongst the population. If we can gain some spies in Marcel's army of supernaturals, maybe we gain intel about his plans." I suggested, and Elijah nodded thoughtfully.
"Marcellus has made the werewolves fearful of him. Maybe we can have Miss Marshall assist us in connecting with her lineage. They would obey you, brother. I'm sure that you could gain alliance within the scattered packs in the bayou." Elijah looked the Klaus for confirmation.
"My children, and Caroline, will remained under constant supervision and guardianship. I will make a phone call to Marcel, and see if we can speak on neutral terms, but if he is aggressive in any matter, it is as simple as this: this is war.
