The rest of the week had a couple of eventful moments for all three girls. It was clear why they still needed to be monitored around the clock. Regardless of the rocky week they had, Sax still felt that they were stable and well enough to be transported back to LA. Sara had since become a bit more comfortable with the idea of flying again. Truth was they were all still petrified. They all had daily nightmares about the crash and they remained quite traumatised. Sara and Kate got to see Amelia again and it was an amazing, happy reunion. They spent a good hour with her every day, so did Tegan with the twins. It made them forget about their pain a bit.

Sax entered the unit on Saturday late afternoon. The girls were all awake but quiet.

"Hi guys. You all ready to get out of here tomorrow?" asked Sax. She got a couple of nervous grunts.

"Alright. I get that you guys are nervous but we're going to be taking excellent care of you. We'll be doing a couple of tests first thing in the morning to make sure everything is still stable, the paperwork has already been completed and your beds are booked in LA. We have one other patient that will be travelling with us. Medical team on board consists of four nurses, one per patient and two doctors. You're never going to get those ratios anywhere in the world. You'll be in good hands" said Sax.

"Can Lindsey come?" asked Tegan.

"I'm sorry Tegan. I've already had this discussion with your family, unfortunately there is no room for them on the flight. She can go with you in the ambulance up to the airstrip and meet you back in LA"

"It's better that way I guess. The kids need her with them" said Tegan.

"Once we're back in LA we'll evaluate you again and consider our treatment options going further" said Sax.

The girls all had a rough night, they were unable to sleep until Sax eventually gave them all a strong sleeping aid. All three of them woke up in a cold sweat after more nightmares.

"Fuck I'm scared" said Tegan after forcing down some breakfast. "I feel nauseous"

"It was your idea Tegan" Sara snapped nervously playing with the hem of a sheet.

"I know alright… give me a break"

"Guys… it's normal to feel really nervous. I'd be worried if you weren't nervous" said Violet who popped in to check on them. During the week she had numerous sessions with all three girls and she felt that they were all making progress.

"It's going to be fine sweetie. You'll be home in no time" said Lindsey and kissed Tegan's hand.

"Morning gang. I just got your test results back and we're good to go. The medics will be here in about 15 minutes to transport you to the airfield via ambulance. We'll sedate you once we're there"

"I don't want to see the plane please" said Tegan fast.

"Okay, noted" smiled Sax.

"I'm sure none of you want to" said Sonia.

The girls said goodbye to the hospital team and conveyed their thanks. They even took some selfies with staff and handed out autographs. They were happy to do it for these people who all had a part in saving their lives, directly or indirectly.

"There's a crowd of fans outside so we've got the ambulance bay cordoned off. Nobody will see you go out" said Sax.

"I'm sorry for the hassle" said Kate.

"No problem. I'm just so proud of you guys right now" Sax smiled.

A few minutes later the girls said goodbye to the family and were all on gurneys ready to be transported. They were all still on monitors and were now on oxygen masks to help calm them down.

Sara and Kate were transported in one ambulance with Sax. Tegan was in another ambulance with Lindsey and the Denver trauma fellow Dr Brenda Carver.

Tegan's monitor beeped fast as she stared at the ambulance ceiling.

"It's okay baby. Don't be scared" said Lindsey and squeezed Tegan's hand.

"Can't help it" said Tegan.

A few minutes later the ambulance came to a stop.

"Okay, we'll be sedating you in a couple of minutes. Time to say goodbye for now Lindsey" said Dr Carver.

"I love you. I love you so much. Take care of the kids alright" Tegan smiled weakly.

"I will, promise. I love you Tegan. With everything in me"

"Love you too… see you soon" said Tegan.

"Ready?" asked the doctor with a syringe in her hand.

Tegan nodded and swallowed hard. She was pale and clammy. The doctor started injecting the sedative into Tegan's IV line.

"Love… you… be safe" Tegan whispered.

Lindsey stroke Tegan's hair and face. "I love you, I'll be right there when you wake up"

A second later Tegan was out. Dr Carver put the oxygen mask back on Tegan's face.

"We'll take good care of her" she winked and radioed Sax.

Kate and Sara were still in the ambulance, holding hands.

"I can't do this!" said Sara suddenly starting to hyperventilated.

"You can do this" said Kate.

"I'm so scared, no no… I can't dooo this Kate" said Sara now in tears.

"I love you… we're going to be fine" said Kate and nodded to Sax.

Sax didn't speak and just injected the sedative into Sara's IV.

Sara was feeling drowsy instantly. "Kate… Kate I love you. Please don't get hurt again" Sara mumbled before going out.

Kate closed her eyes and swallowed hard.

"She's out. Ready Kate?" asked Sax.

Kate just nodded.

Fifteen minutes later the patients were loaded into the plane and being secured to their beds and monitors.

"ETA on our last patient?" asked Sax looking stressed.

"I'm here" said Cameron walking into the plane. She looked a bit pale but at least she was walking and dressed in street clothes.

"Ms Hart, I'm Dr Sinclair. Kelly here is going to help you to your bed" said Sax.

Cameron stopped in her tracks and looked at the other three patients.

"Are they… asleep?" she asked.

"They're sedated yes, would you like a sedative too?"

"No, I'm fine. I can just take a normal seat maybe?"

"Sorry, no can do. Bed for you"

"But I'm fine"

"I know, it's protocol"

"It's bullshit" Cam mumbled.

"Ms Hart. I have gone through your medical history. Apparently you're not stable enough to travel on a commercial flight…"

"I'm stable okay"

"I know, right now you are but we…"

"Yeah yeah, I know. It's fine" said Cameron clearly in a foul mood.

"I believe you're a special ops rescue specialist? You're the one that found Tegan"

"Uh huh"

"This must be really hard for you, having…"

"It's fine really, please just don't let them wake up mid flight. I don't want them seeing me. And I don't want you telling them I was on the flight with them. Promise me" said Cam looking at the medical team.

"Doctor patient confidentiality Ms Hart. You're secret is safe with us" said Sax with her hands in the air.

"Them too" said Cam motioning to the nurses.

"Same story… I don't know why you don't want them to know but don't worry, they won't know" said Sax.

"I just don't okay"

"Okay, just take it easy. Get on the bed so we can get some base line vitals please. Take-off is in 10 minutes"

Cam sighed but did as instructed. Sax took her BP and listened to her chest. She checked her glands and her temperature.

"I'm fine doc" said Cam rolling her eyes.

"Let's keep you that way. Attach a cardiac monitor please and get a line started"

"Seriously? I don't need an IV"

"You do, if we need to give you medication in case of an emergency"

"FML" Cam mumbled and lay back.

"What was that?" asked Sax.

"FML – as in… fuck my life" said Cam and started laughing. Sax shook her head but couldn't help grinning.

"Alright, rhythm looks good" said Sax studying the EKG a minute later.

"Kelly, please check that the defib is charged" said Sax.

"Don't charge it on my account… I have my own personal one built in" said Cam.

"It's not only on your account Ms Hart" Sax smiled.

"Just call me Cameron or Cam please"

Sax turned to speak to one of the pilots.

"We're good to go guys. Patients are all nice and stable, everyone take their seats please" said Sax. She walked over to Cam and put the bed rails up before strapping her down to the bed tight. Cam insisted lying on her side. "Alright, okay… just relax. You can lie on your side" said Sax. One thing she learned through the years is never to judge a patient's emotional state and how they act when they're ill.

Cam tucked a pillow under her head and clutched another one in front of her. She looked at Tegan. She could only see her side profile and that was mostly obscured by the oxygen mask. She couldn't help staring. Tegan was beautiful that's for sure. She looked almost peaceful, as if she was just taking a leisurely afternoon nap.

Sax sat strapped in watching Cam watch Tegan. She was deep in thought. She was happy to be heading back to her familiar territory with four alive patients although one was only in her care for the duration of the flight. She missed Jude incredibly. She missed waking up in her arms and making love to her after getting home at weird hours. She missed the stability she brought to her, the calm.

"All good over there Miss Hart?" asked Sax as the plane reached altitude.

"Hmmm" said Cam still staring at Tegan.

"Cam?" said Sax now next to her bed. Cam snapped out of it and turned on her back, almost embarrassed. She put one arm behind her head.

"You feeling okay?" said Sax looking at the monitor.

"Absolutely…. No problems" sighed Cam.

"Get some rest please. Let us know if you need anything"

"When's the in-flight entertainment starting?" Cam laughed.

"Well, I can ask Dr Carver over here to start telling jokes but that's not her speciality. In flight beverages and a snack will be served in a while" said Sax.

"Really? I thought this was the only beverage I'm getting today" said Cam pointing at the IV bag over her head.

"It's not much – tea and a sandwich but I think you should eat something, keep your blood sugar up"

"Sure, thanks Doc" said Cam sincerely.

"You're welcome" Sax smiled. Cam pulled out her Kindle and started reading.

"After your snack I want you to take a nap please" said Sax.

"Yes Doctor" said Cam and saluted. Sax liked her. She definitely marched to her own tune. She seemed like a hardass on the outside but a total sweetheart on the inside. Sax couldn't help but wonder who made her put those walls up. She had heard all about Cam's heroics when saving Tegan and it impressed her. After checking on the other three patients she sat down and opened Cam's chart again. She felt incredibly sorry for her. It had to be devastating to be at the prime of your life, in peak physical condition only to be struck down by a virus and subsequent damage to your heart muscle that left you with an ICD/pacemaker and in quite urgent need of a heart transplant. She wondered if Cam would get that heart before her own gave in completely. She wondered whether Cam would be able to go back to work, to do what she loves and what she was so passionate about.

"Dr Sinclair" a nurse called Sax out of her thoughts.

"Yes" Sax snapped.

"I'm a bit concerned about Kate's BP. It's down to 90 systolic" said the nurse calmly.

Sax jogged over to Kate.

"Up her dopamine, titrate to a systolic of 105" she said and started listening to Kate's chest.

"Not now Morgan, not now" she mumbled.

"Up and stabilising" said the nurse a few minutes later. Sax let out a sigh of relief.

"You okay Dr Sinclair?" asked the Trauma resident.

"I'm fine… just, stressed I guess" said Sax rubbing her neck muscles.

"Why don't you go take a seat? Have a rest and some lunch. We've got things under control here"

"No thanks, I'm good" said Sax not looking away from the monitor.

After about an hour of milling around her patients Sax finally sat down.

"All's stable everyone. Keep an eye on the monitors though please" said Sax. She started on some paperwork.

Cam had finished her sandwich and tea a good twenty minutes ago and was now just lying on her back staring out in front of her. Suddenly she felt her heart start to race out of nowhere.

"Sax" somebody yelled. Sax raced over to Cam.

"She's having a run of SVT, stay clear her IDC should fire in a second" said Sax holding her arms up. Cam's face paled instantly and she looked petrified. She suddenly lost consciousness and started very faintly twitching. Sax looked up at the monitor. "We have capture… Pacing… pacing… pacing" said Sax and put her fingers in Cam's neck. Dr Sinclair stood ready with an ambubag in case Cam stopped breathing.

"Shit! Lost her output, she's in V-tach. Stand clear it's going to shock" said Sax. Cam twitched again, this time a bit more pronounced.

"And she's back… sinus tach on monitor. Get some oxygen on her" Sax sighed.

Cam opened her eyes and blinked hard a few times. "Hey, welcome back" said Sax.

"What happened?" Cam croaked suddenly feeling nauseous.

"Your heart went a bit haywire there for a minute. You had a run of SVT. IDC paced you for a few seconds and then you arrested. First shock got you back" said Sax.

"Fuck" Cam groaned. "I'm gonna be sick" she said and pushed away the oxygen mask. Sax and a nurse pulled her body up and another nurse had a bowel in front of her a second later. Cam vomited her lunch back up.

"Sorry" she whispered and wiped her mouth with the back of her hand. The nurse started cleaning her up.

"That's alright, just breathe the oxygen for us. I'll give you something for the nausea in a second" said Sax still watching the monitor.

Cam started crying, it completely broke Sax's heart. "Hey it's okay, we've got you. You're okay now. At least we know the IDC is working well"

"It's not okay… My heart is failing. I'm going to die" Cam cried.

"You're high up on the donor list, a new heart could become available any day"

"Or not… I'm not right at the top"

"There's a lot of things that determines who gets a donor heart. You don't have to be right at the top"

"Thanks Doc, I appreciate the pep talk but I really just want to wallow in my misery right now. You just take care of the other patients" said Cam and turned on her side clutching a pillow. Sax stared at her for a minute.

"How are our other patients?" asked Sax turning around.

"All stable, no problems whatsoever. Dr Sinclair…." said Dr Carver softly.

"Should we consider turning back or making an emergency stop considering what just happened?"

"No. We're more than halfway there. The Electro-physiologist in LA is the best in the biz. She needs to get to him"

"Okay, I'm worried though"

"We'll keep a close eye on her. She's stable now"

"Your call"

"It's my call to continue to LA. I need to get the other three patients there too. An unscheduled stop really won't be ideal"

The plane jumped and Sax suddenly looked pale hanging onto a seat.

"Sorry everyone, just a bit of turbulence. We'll be through it in a minute" said the co-pilot coming out of the cockpit.

Sax swallowed hard and took a deep breath. She couldn't deny that deep down she was nervous as hell to fly after what happened to her friends.

The rest of the flight was pretty uneventful. All the patients were stable. Cam nodded off after Sax gave her some meds after her cardiac episode. She looked pale as she slept on her side.

"This poor girl… dammit, that must be tough" said Sax shaking her head as they started their decent to LA. She did something on the radio and spoke into a microphone. "Base this is Dr Sinclair on board Med Flight One. Could you please confirm that you have two ambulances and a helicopter on standby for transport? Our cardiac patient has become unstable during the flight and I'd like to get her to the hospital as fast as possible for evaluation and in case she has another cardiac episode.

"Roger that Dr Sinclair. Med-e-vac two is waiting for you at the airstrip with two ALS ambulances"

"Thank you. Out" said Sax and disconnected.

"You're getting a helicopter for me? Jesus… is it that bad?" asked Cam who had woken up while Sax was talking.

"We just don't want to take any chances. I want the cardiology team to evaluate you as soon as possible. Any luck they'll have you out of hospital by tomorrow. All depends on what the tests say" said Sax.

Cam just nodded and put her forearm over her eyes.

The plane landed in LA without incident and Lindsey was already waiting on the tarmac as a stretcher with Tegan on was lifted with an elevator out of the plane. Dr Carver was with her.

"M'am just stay clear until she's on the tarmac please" said a safety officer.

"Dr Carver! Is she okay? Are they all okay?" asked Lindsey desperately when they reached the bottom.

"Hi Lindsey, they're all fine. They did really well. We're going to get Tegan into the ambulance and then move the rest down. Don't want her out in the wind" said Brenda checking Tegan's monitor.

"What? She okay?" asked Lindsey again. She took Tegan's face in both her hands. Tegan was back on a nasal oxygen line and it was some relief at least.

"She's fine. Relax" Brenda smiled.

Cam was pushed onto the elevator. She heard Lindsey's voice.

"No no… move me back. I'll go after them" she said.

"Ms Hart, the helicopter is waiting for you"

"I don't care. You said they won't see me" said Cam.

"They're still sedated Cam" said Sax patiently.

"Lindsey's down there"

Sax sighed and pressed her radio button.

"Brenda, can we get Tegan in the ambulance with Lindsey and get going please. No need to wait for the other two"

"Roger that Dr Sinclair"

Sax watched Tegan being pushed into the ambulance from the platform where she was standing. Dr Carver and Lindsey got into the back and the ambulance pulled away a minute later without lights and sirens.

"Okay they're gone, happy?" said Sax.

"Thank you" said Cam softly.

"What's up with you and Lindsey?" said Sax as the platform started descending.

"Nothing. We became friends while Tegan was in hospital. I just don't want her to have another thing to worry about" said Cam.

"You know, I think she's kind of pre-occupied with her wife right now" said Sax.

"I know… still. This is a private matter. The less people know about it the better"

"Alright, I hear you" said Sax and released the break on the gurney after they reached the ground. She met some medics and spoke to them briefly.

"Alright Cameron, these guys are going to get you to the hospital in no time. There's a flight doc on board so just relax alright. I'll look in on you at the hospital some time today" Sax winked and patted Cam's thigh.

"Thanks for everything, sorry I was a pain in the ass earlier"

"No problem, I'm used to pains in my ass" Sax laughed and walked back to the lift waving.
