Chapter 33: Crazy
It had been two weeks, and we were now breaching into the pristine first weeks of August. My mother had fallen in love with the plantation, and had spent majority of her time here wandering around the grounds. With security detail, course. We had even been able to sneak in a ride in my beloved car, which had arrived midweek after my mother's arrival. Of course, she had been weary of Klaus's extravagant gift, but I had talked her down.
I sat in the plantation's beautiful botanical garden, in the glass roofed gazebo. My earbuds were ablaze with the vocals of Katy Perry, and I was absentmindedly mumbling along to the words. Klaus had been attempting to teach me how to sketch, but I was failing miserably. I could dance a century old waltz, but drawing came completely impossible for me.
"You're pressing down too hard on the graphite, love. That's why your lines are so harsh." Klaus's voice sounded from beside me. I looked up at him, and pulled out my earbuds.
"Oh, thanks. Well, hi there." I said, and Klaus smiled. I scooted over so he could take a seat next me. I couldn't help but smile as he took my hand in his, and helped me trace softer lines on the sketch pad.
Since my mom had been visiting, Klaus and I hadn't spend a lot of personal time together. He had wanted me to bond with my mother, and I had appreciated his request. That doesn't mean that I had not missed being in his company. But Klaus also had other things to tend to. Like preparing and building an army. I had overheard Klaus and Elijah in the study calling in reinforcements from every side of the globe. They had acquired many agreements, and they were ready. Everyone was arriving either tomorrow morning or evening.
"Who all is coming to stay?" I asked, and Klaus laughed.
"I see you've been eavesdropping. I was going to tell you tonight, but since you're asking now, I might as well tell you. Since the death of Kol and Finn, we lost some alliances due to the destruction of their bloodlines. But Elijah and myself were able to reconnects with some former associates. We are expecting at least 20 or more visitors."
"Wow." I said, looking down at the sketch pad. Now with even more people, I didn't know when Klaus and I would get to spend time with one another.
"These people are not going to look down on you, love. They will understand what you mean to me, and they will accept you as are." Klaus was trying to reassure me of my place in his life. But I wasn't worried about that. I was worried about getting to know Klaus himself.
"Have you decided what gown you wish to wear to Marcellus's gathering?" Klaus asked me, and I shook my head. I had briefly looked at a few gowns online, but nothing had caught my eye.
"Not yet. I might go shopping with my mom later…." I tried to respond, but Klaus's attention had been averted elsewhere. His eyes were trained to the other side of the gazebo, into the garden.
"Hey, what's up?" I asked him, and he whispered back urgently.
"Caroline, I want to you quietly get up, and then make a break for the house. Run quickly, get Elijah, and then take your mother into the study. Lock the doors and windows, and fetch a stake from under the desk. There is a stash of weapons there." Klaus instructed me.
"Why? What's happening?" I whispered back.
"They're here. Marcellus's 'family' members. Now do what I said." Klaus explained what was happening.
Before I could agree to Klaus's instructions, a swarm of vampires came flooding from the surrounding gardens. I dashed up, and Klaus automatically crouched in a protective stance in front of me. They were coming from every angle, dressed in dark colors. I couldn't tell who was leading them, only that they had been instructed to attack without mercy.
"Caroline, RUN!" Klaus shouted, and I made a beeline for the back patio door. I didn't make it far though. Suddenly I was being pounced on by at least five vengeance seeking vampires.
I struggled to fight off my attackers. I would have a punch and kick to one, and then another one would be on top of me. Fighting them off, I was able to move forward a few paces. But they were overwhelming. But that's my hybrid in shining armor made an appearance, clearing the scoundrels out of my way for enough time to vamp speed towards the door. Once I was safely inside, I did exactly as Klaus had told me to do.
"Elijah!" I shouted as I ran through the house.
"Caroline, what is the matter?" My mother emerged from the library, clutching a novel in her hands. She had a worried look on her face, and I was about to freak her out even more.
"Mom, get in the study. Lock the door and windows, and don't let anyone in until you hear my voice. Okay?" I repeated the directions Klaus had given to me. Except I wasn't hiding from the fight.
"What's going on?"
"Just go!" I yelled, and my mom ran in the direction of the study. She slammed the door closed, and I waited until I heard the lock click.
Next on the agenda was to hunt down Elijah, who actually found me.
"There's a battle going on outside. Get yourself to safety and Klaus and myself will fetch you when it's safe. Go!" Elijah was heading to the back door, and I was right behind him.
"What are you doing? I said to go protect yourself!" Elijah shouted, and I gave him a wry smile.
"That's what I'm doing."
Before either Klaus or Elijah could say otherwise, I was head first in a brooding battle with a very strong-willed female. Her tan colored hair was in disarray, falling out of her slicked back pony. She threw a few sissy punches, which I easily blocked. That pissed her off, and made her fighting skills even more clouded.
After fighting the blonde for five minutes, I finally was able to snap her neck. A crack filled the air, and not a second later I was once again in battle with another vampire. This one was a stockier built, dark skinned male who obviously was well-trained.
I tried my best to defend myself, but my attempts were lacking strength. The guys nails raked across my face in pursuit of off a hit, and I felt blood drip into my mouth. The copper tasting liquid was unnerving, but I kept fighting.
But when the guy went in for a strike, and ended up ripping a massive slash in the blouse I was wearing, I got pissed.
"This is Dior, you idiot!" I snapped, and my rage increased the motion of the fight. I threw a punch, and landed the jerk straight in the jaw. He recoiled back, as if he was shocked that a girl knew how to hit.
I was about to finish him off strong, but someone came behind him and removed his heart from his chest. Blood trickled out of Klaus's hand as he held the heart of the crumpled body before me. And by the look on his face, I knew I was in big trouble.
"WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING?!" Klaus ranted, pacing across the floor in front of the fireplace in the drawing room.
"I was trying to help." I groaned.
Once the fight in the garden had been eliminated, Klaus had been in a blazing fury about my choice to join in the battle. He had been chastising me for the past hour, and I was getting annoyed by his constant obnoxiousness.
"You could have been killed. You were injured. I specifically told you to stay inside!" Klaus accused me, and I rolled my eyes.
"You're being overdramatic. I wish you would stop treating me like a child." I argued. Klaus gave me a annoyed look.
"I was trying to protect you."
"Then stop trying to protect me! We've had this argument so many times before, yet you still don't get the point. I can defend myself!" I shouted.
"Oh, yes, I'm sure you can, love. And that's why your blouse is torn. I'm sure your mother would love to be mourning over your body that has your heart ripped out of your chest!" Klaus hit note within his last accusation.
"I'm sorry if you can't handle the fact that I can defend myself. I'm not some damsel in distress that always needs rescuing. Get it through your thick skull that I want to fight my own battles, be it dangerous or not." I snapped, and I could see the vein in Klaus's forehead popping.
"I will not stand with the fact that you wish to endanger yourself every chance you get!" Klaus roared.
"And why not?" I screamed, the tension in the room building.
"Because I love you, dammit!"
The room went silent. A look of shock spread across my face as I looked at Klaus. I had known Klaus was in love with me, but he had never openly admitted it. But here we were.
"What did you just say?" I asked, wondering if I had heard him right.
"I said that I love you. And I have for a long time. That's why I told you to hid. I don't want to lose the best thing that's ever happened to me." Klaus sighed.
"Wow." I breathed, still confused about how to Klaus's sudden proclamation.
"You don't have to say anything right now. I want you to form your feelings for me at your own pace. Love requires patience and discipline. I want us to have our own fairytale." Klaus spoke gently, and I smiled.
"I guess before the fairytale, you have to win the battle." I mumbled, and Klaus laughed. The tension throughout the room was now dwindling, and Klaus and I both seemed more relaxed.
"I am sorry for overreacting about the fights. You were right, and I should let you fight your own battles if you wish." Klaus admitted.
"And I'm sorry I went against your request of me staying safe. I just wanted to help." I apologized.
"I guess it's true what they say." I laughed.
"And what's that, sweetheart?"
"That love really does make you do crazy things."
A/N:
Hope everyone liked this update! Klaus is finally opening up, and Caroline is finally showing her badass self! I have a challenge for all my readers out there...I need some character name ideas for the upcoming visitors that are Klaus's allies. Think olden and foreign, but most importantly have fun creating them! Maybe include descriptions too, but it's up to you! Thanks again.
