"Where the heck are we going?" I ask as Evadne drags me through the school hallways. We are heading for the exit even though we still have a few more classes to get through. However, I'm always down for missing school.
"We have to get out of here and to somewhere safe," Evadne answers as we leave the building. I'm already exhausted, and I didn't know how far we have to go. "The longer you stay here, the more trouble there will be. I'm sure there will be more monsters on their way to us right now."
"What? Monsters? What are you talking about, Evadne?"
"I'll explain it all later. Right now, we have to get out of here. Plus, I can't have you thinking that I'm completely crazy while I'm trying to get you to safety," She says. We rush through the city streets, getting as much distance as we can before we try getting on any form of transportation. Evadne says it is better to be in the city's crowds because our scents are masked by everyone else. I don't understand what she is saying.
"Eva, please. You have to tell me what is going on. Or at least tell me where we are going," I beg. I hate feeling left out of the loop. I want to know what is going on because the past week or so has been absolutely crazy, and I want to know why.
She sighs, "We are going to a place called Camp Half-Blood. It is a summer camp for kids like you and me."
"You mean like troubled kids, right?"
"Not exactly."
"Well, can I go home and get something before we leave? I want to let at least my mom know that I'm gone."
"I don't know if that is a good idea," She says hesitantly.
"Please," I beg. I know my mom and I haven't been on the best terms, but I don't want to just disappear on her. "I just want to leave her a note about where I'll be."
She sighs, "Fine, but we have to make it quick. The longer we take to get to the camp, the more endanger you will be."
"I know. You've already mentioned it," I say, slightly annoyed. I feel like Evadne is going to keep saying this until we get to this stupid camp. Like she doesn't have to tell me that I'm in danger constantly. After all, I was just attacked by our English teacher, who was trying to murder me. She wasn't the one that was about to get murdered after being told she shouldn't exist.
When we arrive at my apartment building, I check to see if Robert is guarding the desk. He isn't, which means Evadne and I don't have to sneak up to my apartment. We quickly make our way to my apartment without getting caught. Well, at least I thought we made it without getting caught.
"Nikita Susan Avey," My mom shouts the second Evadne, and I step into the apartment. "What are you doing here? You should be in school. Please tell me you aren't skipping your last day of school."
"There was an incident," I answer.
My mom looks skeptical at us before asking, "What kind of incident?"
"Uh, the type where my English teacher that I 'attacked' and got arrested for turned into a monster and tried to kill me. In the end, she turned to dust after I slashed her with the charm on my necklace that was given to me by he who should not be named. And now we are on our way to some camp that is supposed to be for kids like me."
Evadne steps in and says, "We should be on our way to Camp Half-Blood, but someone wanted to let you know where she was going." Evadne has always been on guard around my mother. I don't know why, but it seems like Evadne doesn't trust her. Maybe from all the stories I told Evadne about how my mother only cares about her job.
"What do you mean you are already on your way to Camp Half-Blood?" My mom asks. Did she not hear that my English teacher almost murdered me? "You aren't supposed to leave yet. I won't let you. It is a dangerous place for you to go, and I don't trust them. That is why I never sent you even though your father told me that they would protect you."
Evadne sighs, "You never told Niki anything, did you?"
"What are you talking about? What is going on? What didn't my mom tell me?" I ask.
"I couldn't. I can't," My mom answers. I have never been more confused in my life. Two important people in my life are keeping something from me. I hate it. I hate being left out, and that is precisely what is going on.
Evadne shakes her head and says, "Niki, your father didn't abandon you because he didn't love you or your mother. Your father abandoned you because he is a Greek God and can't be with you and your mother without putting you guys in more danger than you are. You're a demigod."
"I'm sorry. I'm a what?"
"You're a demigod. Half Greek god. Half-human."
"Are you also a demigod?"
Evadne nods and answers, "My mother is Hecate, Goddess of magic."
"And who is my dad?" I ask my mother. She just shakes her head no. She refuses to tell me. After all these years, I've known nothing about my dad, and even now, she hides him from me. I finally learn that he is a Greek god, and she won't tell me which one. I pray it isn't Zeus because that just seems too cliche.
"We need to leave," Evadne says. I nod as I quickly go to my room and grab the bag I have already packed. I didn't know when I would be sent to the camp by my mother, so I packed to be prepared. "We have already wasted too much time here."
I hug my mom and say, "I'll be fine, but I need to go. You know that you can't protect me, and I need to learn who my father is. If you don't tell me, I'll find out on my own with the camp's help. After all, this time away from one another will be good for us. You won't have to yell at me all summer."
"Be safe," My mom says as she hugs me back. When I pull away, I give her one last smile before I run out the door to spend my summer at this mysterious camp. I wonder how long I'm going to last. After all, it isn't like I know what I'm getting myself into. For all I know, my mom could be right about this camp. It could be dangerous, but at the same time, Evadne trusts this camp with her whole life. I don't know which one to believe. I guess I have to make up my mind once I get there.
"I promise the camp isn't all bad," Evadne says as we walk through the streets. It's like she read my mind. "I've been going since I was little. It will help you learn to defend yourself against monsters like Mrs. Dodds while protecting us at the same time. I guess you can say that it is like a safe haven."
"Then why doesn't my mom want me to go?" I ask.
She sighs, "I think your mom believes the longer she keeps you at home, the more she is protecting you. However, that isn't going to work. You're growing up and realizing who you are. The more you know, the stronger the scent you release and the easier it is for the monsters to track you down. I'm surprised that Mrs. Dodds is the first monster you've actually interacted with."
"I'm sorry?"
"Don't worry about it. It isn't your fault. It is just surprising," Evadne says as we get on the subway that was to take us to Long Island. We stay close to one another for multiple reasons. The first one is because of creeps. The second is because we don't want any monsters attacking us while we are separated.
After about a half an hour long subway ride, we are pushing through the city streets of Long Island. I follow carefully behind Eva, looking for anything that could be suspicious. Apparently, we are going to the beaches of Long Island, since that is where the camp is located. However, I don't know how they can keep a whole camp hidden near the beaches of Long Island.
"We're here," Evadne says as we are in a set of wood not far from the beach.
"Uh," I say as I look around. There is nothing but trees surround us. "Eva, I hate to break it to you, but there is nothing here. It's a forest."
She laughs, "That is because you aren't looking hard enough." We take another step, and suddenly, we are standing in front of a camp.
"What the," I say as I stare in awe.
"Welcome to Camp Half-Blood, your home away from home," Evadne says with a smile.
