Embry and Angela: Writer's Block

Angela Call huffed in frustration, running her hands through her hair as she stared at the blank word document on her laptop. She had been starting and restarting the opening sentence of her new book for the past hour. Not paragraph, sentence. Her last book had been a success, much like the two before it. But for some reason or another, she could not get this new one started. And she had already promised her editor that she would have rough draft of at least the first five chapters done by the end of the week. How was she going to have it done by the end of the week if she couldn't even think of a good opening sentence?

Thinking that she probably just needed a break—even though she had written absolutely nothing—Angela got up from her desk and walked into the main room of her home, cracking her neck as she did. Looking at the couch, she smiled softly at seeing her husband Embry sitting and watching a little educational cartoon with their toddler son Joseph. Joseph was so much like his father in the ways of looks, though had the same natural sweetness of both his parents. Seeming to feel his mother's gaze on him, Joseph turned his head and looked at Angela, smiling and squealing in delight at the sight of her.

Embry looked down at his son before turning his head, spotting his wife standing in the entrance way to the living room. Smiling at her, he lifted Joseph's hand and waved it saying, "Look Joey, mommy is here."

Joseph giggled as he clapped his hands, making Angela smile and walk over to her husband and child. Taking her son from Embry, she held him close and said softly, "Hi, my sweet boy."

Embry smiled at the sight of his wife cuddling their son, but his smile slipped when he noticed the sad look in her eyes. Standing from his seated position, he wrapped his arms around Angela, being mindful of Joseph as he did, and asked, "Hey, what's wrong?"

Shaking her head, Angela answered, "Nothing."

"Come on, I know you better than that. What's the matter, Angie?"

"I just…" Angela sighed and looked at her husband. "…I have writer's block."

"Okay. You've had it before, no big deal."

"Usually, but when I get it I'm at least three chapters deep. I can't even write an opening sentence to this new story without deleting it. I have the premise written down with approval of it by my publisher, but I just can't seem to get it started."

"And that premise is?"

"A set of twins finding an ancient civilization of wood nymphs and helping to stop the destruction of their home from the evil sorcerer that has kidnapped the nymph-fairy hybrid princess to be his bride."

Embry nodded in response, thinking that it sounded like an interesting read for young adults, as was the audience Angela wrote for. However, he knew that when writer's block struck her, she ended up in a rut for a day or two until her muse came back. But for it to have kicked in before even starting her story was new. Wanting to cheer her up somehow, Embry wondered what he could do to help her and clear her writer's block if he could. Suddenly getting an idea, he told Angela to wait and took Joseph, walking out of the living room and down the hall. Five minutes later, he came back with Joseph in his baby carrier on his chest and his baby bag on his shoulder. With a smile he held his hand out to Angela and said, "Let's go."

The bespectacled woman blinked and asked while putting her hand in Embry's, "Go where?"

"For a walk. We're going to walk around and help Angie W. Call get her muse back."

Angela hadn't the slightest clue how taking a walk would help get rid of her writer's block, but Embry seemed so confident about it, she just couldn't refuse. Nodding, she smiled and allowed her husband to pull her out of their home, closing the door behind them. Once it was closed and locked, the three of them set off down the road, beginning their walk and quest to clear Angela's writer's block.

An hour had past and so far, Angela's writer's block had cleared up a bit, though there was still a bit of it in place. But for now, she felt she could go back home and write something for her rough draft. As they were walking down the road to their house, they passed by Billy's house. However, before they completely passed it, Embry suddenly stopped and stared at the house, or rather a car parked in front of it. Wondering why he suddenly stopped, Angela looked up at Embry and asked, "What's wrong? What's the matter?"

Frowning at the car, Embry blinked for a moment before finally saying, "That's my mom's car."

Angela looked at the car and looked back at her husband. "Okay. She's just visiting Billy, it's fine."

"I guess so, but she's never had any reason to before when I got older. What could she be doing here now?"

"Em, don't worry about it. Everyone visits Billy, he's the chief around here. I wouldn't think too hard about it."

Embry wasn't so sure. Something was nagging at him, telling him to figure out the reason for his mother visiting Jacob's dad. Logically he knew there was nothing wrong with it, but he kept being nagged by a feeling. Deciding to act on it, he walked up to the little red house, Joseph giggling on his chest in his carrier while Angela hurried after him calling his name. Climbing the stairs to the porch, Embry hesitated for a moment before grabbing the doorknob and twisting it, opening the door and entering it, all the while ignoring his wife's hiss of his name. Embry took two steps inside the house and stopped, his eyes wide at the sight before him.

His mother Tiffany, was cuddled up on the couch with Billy, having been giving him Eskimo kisses when he had stepped in. The two older adults jumped at Embry's sudden entrance, staring at him in shock before Tiffany stood up, shouting at Embry for being rude and coming inside uninvited, as well as asking what he was doing there. Having recovered from what he saw, Embry asked, "Me? What are you doing here, mom? What are you doing with Billy?"

Tiffany glared at her son before saying, "None of your business, Embry."

"We're together," Billy said, looking at Tiffany pointedly when she turned her glare onto him. "I told you to tell the boy before he found out on his own, Tiff."

"You're dating Billy?!" Embry shouted incredulously.

"Yes, I am and have for a while now." Tiffany turned her attention to Joseph who was squealing and reaching out to his grandmother, wanting to be held by her. Smiling, she plucked him out of his carrier and sat back down on the couch next to Billy, cooing at him while Embry continued to stare in disbelief at her.

Putting his hands on his hips he said, "Mom, we're not done talking about this."

Billy gave Embry a sheepish smile before saying, "I'm sorry you had to find out this way, Embry."

Turning his attention to the older man, Embry asked, "Does Jacob know about this?"

"Yes, though only because Bella's old man let it slip."

Embry's eyes widened further before he threw his hands in the air and left the house, needing to clear his head. Angela, who had been witness to it all, looked at her husband as he paced on Billy's porch before turning her attention back to Joseph, Tiffany, and Billy, though Billy and Tiffany more so. She stared at them a while longer before looking back at Embry, now sitting on the porch with his face in his hands. Suddenly her eyes widened, and she let out a gasp before bursting into giggles.

Quickly moving to sit next to her husband, she wrapped her arms around his muscular shoulders and hugged him close, kissing his cheek and lips before saying, "Thank you, Em! You've cleared my writer's block! I know how to start my story now!"

"Huh?" Embry said in reply, looking at his wife in slight confusion.

"Yes, you just gave me the perfect start to my story. Thank you, Embry Call."

Embry nodded slowly before frowning. "Wait a minute. Are you…do you mean…?" His eyes widened in realization. "Angela, no."

Angela stood up saying, "Too late, the idea is stuck. And it's not like I haven't written something like this concerning you before in my fictional stories."

"Yeah, but you can't start it off with your character finding out their mom is dating their best friend's dad."

"I can, and I will." Angela laughed at Embry's bewildered expression, knowing he was at a loss of what to say. Stepping up to him, she wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him down for a sweet kiss. "I promise, it's only to start the story. And if it will make you feel better, I'll make it up to you later tonight."

"How so?"

Angela smirked and kissed him again, nipping at his lower lip. Embry chuckled in response, enticed by her silent promise. Nodding, he finally said, "Alright, alright. You go on ahead and get started writing. I'll hang here with Joey and talk with mom and Billy."

"Okay. I love you."

"Love you, too."

The Call couple hugged each other close before Embry pressed a kiss to Angela's cheek. Angela smiled in response and let go of her husband, going down the stairs of the porch and headed back to her home. She was grateful to Embry, she really was. He had helped clear her writer's block and she was sure to be finished with her rough draft of her first five chapters by the end of the week. Smiling to herself, she couldn't help but think she really loved her husband, and that without his help, she'd still be stuck in her writer's block.
