Sax sat leaned back into the swivel chair at her desk and steepled her fingers in front of her face. After a minute she sighed and leaned forward. She pulled up Cameron's chart on her tablet for the fifth time that week. The first time she did she was just looking for Cam's cellular number to check how she was feeling. The hospital in Boston sent reports after each follow up visit and Sax read through them, eager to know whether Cam showed any signs of rejection. She came across the information completely by accident…. It just jumped out at her. The date of Cameron's transplant was the day after Lindsey's death. Two minutes past midnight in fact. "This is so weird". Sax was conflicted on whether or not to open the classified section in the file with her department head special clearance. But she did. She stared at the next page… "Name of Donor: Lindsey Byrnes".
Sax remembered staring at the information in front of her and mumbling an inaudible expletive. What should she do about this? It wasn't her place to tell either Cam or Tegan anything. Cam had to ask for the information and Sax wasn't sure she wanted her to. "This could all be some mess up" she muttered and called Cameron's cardiac surgeon, not quite sure how she was going to explain her questions". "Jane, hi! It's Saxon Sinclair" Sax made some small talk before she got to the point.
"I'm calling about a shared patient. Cameron Hart"
"Yes, what about her?"
"I just had a look at her chart and…"
"Sax I'm just around the corner of your office. You there?"
"Yes, I am"
"Let me pop in. I'll bring coffee"
"Um… okay thanks"
A few minutes later Jane McKenzie entered Saxon's office with two steaming cups of coffee. She handed Sax one and plonked down on the visitor's chair in front of Saxon's desk. She put her feet on the desk and her head back. She untied her long brown hair and it flowed over her shoulders.
"Make yourself at home" Sax mumbled. "Typical cardio god… thinks she owns the place" Sax thought to herself. She actually really liked Jane but she was full of it and very cocky. Jane knew she was excellent and she knew she was hot. Who was Sax kidding, if Jane wasn't straight and Sax wasn't as good as married she'd be hitting that so hard! She blinked and pulled herself back to the present when Jane started speaking.
"So, about Miss Hart, good news right, no sign of rejection. I mean I know it's early but every negative biopsy is a victory for us" Jane interrupted Sax.
"Yeah that really is great" Sax was glad that Jane didn't ask why Sax was looking at the cart in the first place.
"Just wanted to clarify something… When did her actual transplant take place?"
"Well… Sax I don't know if I should be discussing this with you" said Jane suddenly sounding nervous. Sax sighed and closed her eyes to compose herself. "It's just, I know you and Cameron saw each other out of the hospital setting and…" Jane couldn't finish her sentence before Sax interrupted.
"We had a barbeque at a mutual friend's house. Sure I looked in on her a few times while she was in here but that was because I like to follow up on patients. She was my patient on the flight from Denver here and…"
"Sax…" Jane held her hand up.
"I know alright… I know it was Lindsey. I just thought that… well they told me that the heart was going to San Diego?" Sax said looking perplexed.
Jane shook her head and looked a mix between annoyed and amused. "And it did"
"I don't understand?"
There was some sort of holdup with UNOS. They told us to hold on harvesting for a while, they needed to sort the recipients out. I managed to stabilise Lindsey upstairs. The heart was originally going to Miss Hart, then as we were wheeling Lindsey in to surgery they called to say that the San Diego patient had a sudden setback and that she was now at the top of the list. I was heartbroken, when they called me and said the heart needed to go to San Diego. I mean we pretty much just missed it. Fifteen minutes earlier Cam would have had it. What can you do through right… Not up to us who gets it"
"No, no I guess it's not" Sax mumbled. "I still don't understand though"
"Hang on… getting there. We started harvesting just before six that evening. Just in time too if you ask me, the donor was starting to become extremely unstable. Anyway, heart was on ice at 18.21. Into the chopper a few minutes later and on the way to San Diego. I got a call from San Diego almost 4 hours later around quarter past 10 that evening. They had the heart but was the patient had taken a turn for the worst. They tried desperately to stabilise her enough to receive the new heart but they couldn't. Transplant wasn't an option for that patient any more. So, we had a heart and…"
"and the perfect recipient back in LA" said Sax emotionless. She felt sick though. She was glad Cam got a heart but she was shocked it was Lindsey's. She didn't know why it made her feel emotional.
"Yes, it was a perfect match Sax. I was so disappointed earlier that day when I heard that Cam just missed out on that heart. It was a very difficult tissue match. I knew that the chances of a match… Any match, never mind a perfect one coming in before Cam went into complete heart block would be very small. I knew the heart had been on ice longer than what was ideal but it was still in the viable time frame, if only just though by the time they got the heart back to LA. I wanted to lay eyes on the heart before I made a final decision. Told them to fly it right back stat. We prepped Cameron, she was so out of it she didn't even know she may have gotten a heart. When I opened that cooler and saw that heart I knew we were good to go. I just had a feeling although everything in my head and everyone in that ER said we missed it, we lost the heart. I was going to take the chance"
"Fucking hell McKenzie! Hell of a chance to take" Sax snapped.
"One or two more days, who knows maybe one or two more hours and Cam would have been too unstable for transplant. She would be off the list. Once that happened she would have never gotten strong enough to get back on it. I made a judgement call. A difficult one but mine to make. I consulted with her family and medical proxy, everybody knew the risk. Everyone knew we had no choice but to take it" said Jane defensively.
"I'm sorry… go on"
"Got the heart in no problem, it struggled some to get going but after a bit of heated saline, some serious epi injections, bit of cardiac massage and a couple of shocks and she was beating away beautifully. We got the heart beating two minutes past midnight. Long story short, that's why the transplant date is the day after. It's just a bit of a tradition that we have"
"What the fuck though, the date of surgery should be the day you start the cut"
"Not with heart transplants Dr Sinclair"
Sax suddenly remembered Kate mentioning something like that to her once after doing a transplant.
"Jeez… wow"
"She's really rallied Sax. She's doing so well after the transplant. I don't know how but our number 99 heart really is a strong one. To think we almost threw it away" Jane said sarcastically.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to question your judgement and I sure don't question your skill" said Sax.
"Thanks, but honestly, I sure didn't expect Cameron to be doing as well as she is. Cardiac function is excellent. No sign of infection or rejection. Probably in the top 2% of all transplant patients I've seen"
"Doesn't mean she won't reject though right?"
"No… it doesn't. But so far so good. If it does happen we'll manage it. As you know it is common for most transplant recipients to experience some kind of rejection somewhere in their recovery period. We've got it. We're prepared. I'm in constant contact with the team in Boston too. She's doing well. I'm happy for her"
"Yeah, me too" Sax smiled.
"Sax you know you can't tell Cameron… or Tegan"
"I know that"
"Or Kate"
"Of course not!"
"Hey, Lindsey's heart found a great recipient. Could have gone to some asshole" Jane laughed.
"You are disgusting" Sax said but laughed loudly nonetheless.
"Thanks for telling me Dr McKenzie"
"Sax I know this must be… well a bit weird for you. I know Lindsey was a friend of yours. And I know Tegan still is and…"
"It doesn't make any difference where the heart went okay… I'm just glad it found a good recipient. I got to know Cameron a bit and we kind of became… friends… if you can call it that. Nobody more deserving of that heart" Sax smiled.
"I agree. Listen I got to run or I'll be late for surgery" said Jane.
"Thanks again"
"Call me if you want to talk… please"
"Will do… good luck with surgery"
A/N: SO, looks like Cam did get Lindsey's heart but doesn't know. Will they find out and how will that affect their budding friendship? Is Sax going to keep this quiet? Review please, let me know what you think.
