Charlie and Billy: Fishing Trip
Charlie smiled as he watched Sarah wind her fishing rod, reeling in the fish that had taken the bait on her hook. He and Billy had decided to take a fishing trip together and had invited Sarah along who was more than happy to go fishing with her two grandfathers. Especially so because she enjoyed the banter and jabs the old men would exchange whenever one of them said something eluding to them being the better fisherman. In her personal opinion, they were both great and equally matched, but she'd never let them know that knowing it would cause even more banter (not that she minded).
As the fish came out of the water on Sarah's line, Charlie ruffled her short hair and said, "Great job, kiddo. That's the twelfth one you caught today."
Billy nodded and said, "Go ahead and add it to the cooler, Sarah. That's another one to take back home."
"Don't you think we have enough?" Sarah asked as she took the fish off her hook and added it to the cooler that already held thirty-four fish.
"Never," the two men replied.
"Besides, your grandmother decided to have a spontaneous fish-fry on the Reservation tomorrow, so we have to bring back a lot of fish," Charlie said with a sigh before reeling his line back in after not catching a bite for about fifteen minutes.
Billy smiled and said, "You could have told her 'no', Chief."
Charlie glared at Billy. "You know Renee is impossible to reason with once she has her mind set on something. And to make sure it happened she got Bella, Sue, and Tiffany in on it."
"Tiffany?" Billy asked in surprise.
"Yeah, and just like Renee, she's not going to budge about it, and you know that."
Looking momentarily annoyed, Billy let out a huff before taking his own fishing rod and prepared to cast it out mumbling, "Let's keep fishing, then."
Sarah giggled as she cast her own line out before saying, "Well, if we bring back like, I don't know, a hundred fish for the fish-fry and still have enough left over, then mom can make yummy fish casserole."
A sudden look came over both grandfathers' faces before they looked at each other. They said nothing at first, but then Billy said, "You're on, old man."
"Like you can actually out-fish me, Chief," Charlie replied before casting his line out, Billy doing the same.
Sarah frowned in confusion, wondering what prompted her grandfathers to suddenly have a fishing competition in front of her. The teenager then realized her offhanded comment was the spark of it. It was no secret that both Billy and Charlie absolutely loved her mother's fish casserole, and while it was easy for Renee and Tiffany to replicate—it was easy, after all—it never quite tasted the way her mother's did. So in a way, it was possible the older men were viewing her mother's casserole as some sort of prize for bringing home a lot of fish. Of course, that was if there was any left over after the fish-fry.
Realizing that they were going to be out longer than she thought, Sarah sighed as she reeled in another fish, taking it off the hook and adding it to the cooler. She then set down her rod and announced, "I'm going back to get another cooler or two. I figure we're going to need another one."
"Yeah, you do that," Charlie replied somewhat distracted, eyes not leaving the lake they were fishing at.
"Yeah, we'll see you when you get back," Billy added, his eyes not leaving the lake as well.
The teen rolled her eyes and shook her head before grabbing the keys to Billy's truck, walking off towards it and soon climbing into it, putting the key into the ignition and cranking it up. A few seconds later she was pulling off and heading back to La Push, leaving her grandfathers to their little personal competition. As she drove, she reached into her pocket and grabbed her cell phone, dialing a familiar number without looking from the road and held it to her ear. The phone rang twice before it was picked up.
"Hello?" Jacob answered.
"Hey dad, it's me," Sarah said. "Listen, I'm on the way back and I need a favor."
"What is it?"
"Can you get those extra coolers out of your garage? I need to take them back with me for more fish to bring home."
There was a pause before Jacob asked, "Why are you bringing back more fish than what you've caught already?"
"Because yours and mom's dads are trying to out-fish each other."
Jacob laughed in amusement before telling her to meet him at the Taj and that he'd see her in a bit. Sarah hung up and set her phone aside, huffing to herself and silently cursing her accidental suggestion. Oh well, at least something good would come out of all the fish her grandfathers would catch from their fishing trip.
