A/N: I have not read Fruits Basket in a few years, but since there's a sequel out now (?) it made me remember that I once had all these random pairings I had planned to do oneshots for. So now is as good a time as any, I suppose.
He knows he should not. He knows. He does not need Hatori's disapproving stares. Or Ayame's tsk-ed admonishments to know that it is not right, not since he had known her since she was so young.
But, when she was young, it was like having another child in the house. Then another family member, because she knew their secret.
Then…
Then, then, then…
Then she was staring at Kyo with stars in her eyes and her heart on her sleeve and there was something like jealousy curling in Shigure's stomach, because he wanted that. He wanted someone who knew him inside and out and still loved what they saw there. He wanted someone who did not care that he was cursed. Or that he hide his real emotions behind a false smile. That inside he was broken and sad and so, so lonely.
Yuki has someone. Then Hatori. Ayame. Hatasaharu. He thinks that he will finally be happy, but all he can think about is the way that their curse is broken and now so many of them are in love. Tohru loved Kyo first. She loved them all first. It is a thought that will not go away. It festers and grows inside of him like a weed and he doesn't know why. It becomes all consuming, this wish of his, to be looked at, unafraid, to stand before someone and know that they adore everything about him.
She graduates.
He kisses her.
There is probably no way to tell who is more shocked, him or her. She had just been so exciting, bouncing into his house to show him her new diploma, telling him excitedly that Kyo is going to bring her out on a date tonight to celebrate. And the way she Kyo is all wrapped around an I love you and his body moves before he can tell it: No. Stop. Don't.
Her lips are soft, surprised, slack with shock. He pulls away, trying to look aloof, like it had been planned, like he had meant to.
"Shigure-san…?"
There is no I love you when she says his name. Why would there be? There's a twinge in his heart, but he hides it with a smile. She does not notice that it is fake. Of course not. "Just wanted to make sure I was the first person to welcome Tohru-chan in the big world of adulthood!"
There is doubt in her eyes, but it is slowly vanishing as she places his moment in a portion of her mind reserved for his weird antics. A portion filled with him and Ayame. She smiles at him, babbles for another few minutes, the moment forgotten to her already.
But not to him. To him he will think about the sweet way her mouth curls around Kyo's name and wish that she (someone, anyone) would say his own name with such feeling. He will struggle to forget it, to not give in again, to her, to others. To find someone who is knows that he is worth it.
