Cameron rubbed her belly after stuffing herself with pizza. Tegan only nibbled on one slice.
"Not hungry?"
"Oh… Um… guess not?" said Tegan looking distracted.
"What's up?"
"Nothing, I'm just a bit… out of sorts today I guess"
"You sure that's all it is?" Cam asked gently.
"I sometimes get…. Anxious when Sara is… It's weird. I just have this… this weird feeling come over me. Like a nervous feeling you know?"
"I've heard of this kind of thing"
"I'm going to call her. I'm sorry, will you excuse me for a few minutes?"
"Of course, take your time" Cam smiled.
Tegan paced around the deck. She tried calling for the third time. The phone just rang the first two times.
"Tegan, hi" Sara said out of breath, almost startling Tegan.
"Hi Sara! Been trying to get a hold of you for a while. Everything okay over there?" Tegan asked.
"Uhm… yeah" Sara said sounding timid.
"Sar? What's wrong?" asked Tegan, immediately sensing Sara's upset.
"Nothing Tee. What's news over there?"
"Sar…"
Sara sighed dramatically. "Kate… um…."
"Kate what Sara?" Tegan almost yelled.
"Kate's been admitted"
"What are you talking about? Admitted where?"
At the table Cam sat up straighter, she couldn't help hearing the conversation.
"The hospital… She's in the fucking hospital… as a patient"
"Oh my God! What? Why? Is she okay? Sar?' Tegan asked desperately.
"She collapsed in the operating room. Long story short, they did a shitload of tests and scans and stuff and they're giving her a blood transfusion now. Sax says she has a concussion and she needs to keep her for that too… fuck" Sara said and started crying.
"Oh shit" Tegan said and plonked down on a chair, suddenly pale as a sheet.
"Is she okay? I mean will she be okay?" asked Tegan.
"I think so. Sax says this blood volume thing is quite serious but they're managing it. She said she's going to be okay. The neuro checks are just a precaution"
"How serious?"
"She's going to be okay Tegan" said Sara again patiently.
"Sar, is Sax there? Let me speak to Sax"
"She's not here, I don't know where she went"
"Is there another doctor there Sar? Just let me speak to one of them"
"Tegan, calm down. She's fine. Sax said she'll be fine"
"Sara just let me speak to a Doctor! Please!"
"I can't deal with this now Tegan. I'll let you know when we have an update. Don't worry. She'll be fine"
"I'm coming home. I'll try and get on the first flight home today and… shit… I… I" said Tegan sounding as if she was starting to hyperventilate.
"No! No, Tee just stay where you are. I'll keep you updated. If she deteriorates or anything you can home. Right now, she's okay. She'll be okay Tee. She'll probably be home by the time you even get on a plane"
"No, I need to be there. You guys need me"
"We don't need you Tegan. There's nothing you can do. Just go have a glass of wine on your deck and look at the ocean."
"No, I think I should go"
"I can't have to worry about you too right now"
"You don't need to worry about me thank you" Tegan snapped.
"Tegan just calm the fuck down please. I've got this. I need to go"
"Sara! Sar hang on"
"Sorry Tee, need to go. Talk to you later" Sara disconnected.
"Sara! Sara are you there? Fuck" Tegan yelled and stomped her foot.
"Fuck" said Casey from where she was sitting.
"Shit" Tegan mumbled looking at Casey.
"Shit" Ryan deadpanned.
Tegan couldn't help laughing, followed by a frustrated groan.
"What's going on Tegan? Sorry, I couldn't help but overhear some of that"
Tegan relayed what Sara told her to Cameron.
"Damn" Cam said softly and rubbed Tegan's arm.
"She'll be okay. She's in very good hands" said Cam.
"I know, it's just… I… I feel as if…. As if I need to be there. They've always been there for me. Always. I need to be there" said Tegan frantically.
"Tegan. What did Sara say? How bad is it?"
"She said they said she's going to be okay. I can't get much out of her. I don't know"
"You want me to call Sax? She can talk me through it? If she gets consent from Sara of Kate of course"
"Yes please, fuck I don't know what to do"
