A/N: Takes place during issue #1 of New Avengers and post season 4 of Smallville!
It had been six months. Six months since Alicia Baker's death, six months since Clark Kent had nearly killed Tim. Six months since the Kent's had decided the best thing for them to do was to leave Smallville, and relocate to New York where Martha began working at her father's law firm while Jonathan Kent had found himself out of work for the first time in his life. For Clark Kent, the last six months represented a chance to start over in a place where he was free from Jor-El's manipulations and from the constant pain of his memories. However, as he walked alongside the Brooklyn Bridge, the Last Son of Krypton had no way of knowing how drastically his life was going to change in the next few moments.
Stryker's Island Maximum Security Prison Facility A.K.A. The Raft-Just outside Manhattan
"Cap, what the hell could have caused this?!"
Steve Rodgers slammed his shield into the Purple Man's face, making sure he was down before turning to deal with the Wrecker. He dodged a strike from the villain's crowbar and punched him in the jaw, even as he found himself back to back with his old friend and former teammate.
"I don't know Tony, but right now that dosen't matter! We need to keep this contained!"
"Yeah... That might be a bit harder than we thought." Tony said, shooting a villain in the face with his repulsor, wishing now more than ever that he hadn't disbanded the Avenger's. Oh he hadn't actually disbanded them, but he might as well have. His actions at the United Nations were the catalyst that began the end of the Avengers, and looking at the hundreds of scum that were attacking himself, Daredevil, Captain America, Spider-Woman, Spider-Man and Luke Cage only one thought was rampant in his mind.
'Please let this be a nightmare. Let the last six months have all been a bad dream.'
However, he knew that wasn't going to be the case, because everything over the last six months had happened. The Avengers mansion had been destroyed by the Scarlet Witch, and Ant-Man, Hawkeye, and the Vision had all lost their lives. Right at the moment, Tony Stark prayed that he and the others would be able to prevent the people of New York from losing theirs.
Jessica Drew, the first Spider-Woman flew through the air, using her energy blasts to take down villains left, right and center. However it seemed no matter how many she dealt with a dozen more would take their place. She grunted in pain as an energy blast struck her, causing her to lose control of her flight. The woman hurtled toward the Earth wishing she had packed her costume, but after the Avengers had disbanded she had called it quits and joined S.H.I.E.L.D. Peter had always said hindsight was twenty-twenty. She free falled, resisting the instinctive urge to close her eyes as came closer and closer to the ground.
"I think this is your stop."
Jessica looked up at the voice, finding herself in the arms of a young man with blue eyes and black hair, and she was ashamed to say that she said the first thing that came into her head.
"You shouldn't be here."
"I think that's true of everyone not in prison uniforms." He replied, setting her on her feet.
"No I mean you really shouldn't be here. This is no place for civilians."
"Believe me, I am the farthest thing from a civilian." He replied, shooting a burst of heat vision above her head; the heat from his eyes hit the wall behind her and fell forward, burying ten criminals under the rubble. Jessica looked from the rubble to her mysterious rescuer in shock before kicking an approaching criminal and asking the obvious question.
"Just who are you?"
"Clark Kent. On your left." He said before racing over and punching the four criminals in as many seconds.
Luke Cage found himself back to back with Matt Murdock as the two attempted to defeat the continuing onslaught of criminals. He saw Jessica Drew fall out of the air, and could only watch helplessly as she fell. There were too many criminals for him to get to her in time, and he only hoped she would survive her fall. It appeared that someone shared his sentiment because as he elbowed a criminal in the throat he saw his friend caught by someone. At first he thought it may have been Spider-Man but he saw that nothing could be further from the truth. The person who had just set Jessica on her feet had been little more than a child.
"Get your head in the game Cage!" Matt yelled as he kicked one of the criminals in between the legs, sending him to his knees before finishing him with a roundhouse kick to the head. Luke shook his head, returning his full attention to the fight, and wondering when the seemingly endless line of villains would cease.
Clark was moving as quickly as he could, but even with all his powers there were at least three hundred criminals still standing, and he had to confess that he was beginning to tire. However, he ignored his weariness and continued fighting, only thinking one thing.
'Dad's gonna be so pissed.'
Spider-Man webbed one criminal's legs and kicked him in the jaw, grinning under his mask as he did so.
"Timmber!" He yelled, before continuing on, finding no shortage of villain's to be fought. Well, at least he couldn't be called lazy; if fighting super villain's wasn't a workout he didn't know what was. He turned to punch another criminal only to find the man already passed out on the ground.
'Okay, what was that?'
There was no time for the webslinger to wonder as more criminals approached. He just sighed before continuing the fight, thinking that the Parker luck was indeed running true to form.
Four hours later, the fighting was over as the criminals returned to their cells. Jessica smiled a tired grin as she walked over to where Captain America and the others were standing.
"Well, I think I speak for everyone when I say that was not fun." Spider-Man quipped and the others laughed in agreement.
"No, and I'm afraid it's not over." Iron Man said as he walked over to them.
"According to the Prison Warden, at least forty criminals have escaped. We'll have a final number in the next couple hours."
"Do we know who did it?" Matt Murdock asked, but Iron Man shook his head.
"No, and we won't until we know who escaped."
"S.H.I.E.L.D.'s letting you have that intel?" Jessica asked, and Tony just smiled as he took off his helmet.
"I didn't leave Fury much choice. He knows that S.H.I.E.L.D. can't catch all these criminals by himself and once you factor in Steve's Champion status he couldn't say no to my plan for a team."
"Uh, no I am not joining the Champions." Spider-Man broke in and Captain America just laughed.
"What Champion status means my friend, is that I can create any team I want to go on any mission I deem necessary. What I saw today demonstrates that ending the Avengers was the most foolish thing we have ever done. I was impressed by each and every one of you, so I'm asking will you stand with Tony and I? Will you become Avengers?"
Once those assembled had gotten over their shock, all said yes. All but one.
"No. I will not let my reputation drag you through the mud." Before anyone could protest Matt Murdock walked away, entering a chopper just before it left the island.
"Well that went well." Spider-Man said before averting his eyes at the glares he was receiving from the others.
"Okay I've got a question. Who was the guy that caught you?" Luke asked Jessica. She looked around having thought that he was right behind her. However, it seemed that her rescuer had disappeared as soon as the fighting was done.
"He said his name was-"
"CLARK KENT what the hell were you thinking? I thought we agreed that you wouldn't get involved?" Jonathan asked, his anger clear in his voice as he looked at his son, standing in their two bedroom home covered in dirt, grime and blood.
"Dad, there was a breakout, and there were hundreds of prisoners! What would you have had me do?" He retorted, not backing down.
"Let someone else handle it! You're not the only person with powers in town son."
Clark opened his mouth to reply, but was stopped by the sound of their doorbell ringing. He walked towards the door, his father right behind him, the look on the older man's face saying that they weren't done with their conversation.
"Well, I don't think I caught your name." Clark said as he opened the door seeing the woman from the prison, along with someone who was arguably the most recognizable man on the planet. Steve Rodgers, better known to the world as Captain America.
"Jessica Drew. Can we come in for a minute?" She asked, and Clark, forcing Jonathan to allow them into the house lest he appear a rude host. The former farmer had a feeling he wasn't going to like what their two visitors had to say.
"This is my father Jonathan Kent, and my mother Martha."
"Pleased to meet you. Like I said my name is Jessica Drew, and this is Steve Rodgers."
"It's an honor to meet you sir." Clark said, shaking the man's hand, Martha and Jonathan doing likewise.
"The honor's mine son. You've raised an amazing man Mr. Kent. Without his help, things could have been so much worse." He said and Jonathan nodded in acceptance of the man's words. He may not be happy about his son getting involved, but he couldn't help but be proud of him.
"Why do I have the feeling things are still bad Captain?" Clark asked, and Steve nodded in answer to Clark's question.
"Forty-nine highly dangerous criminals escaped."
"Damn it!"
"Clark stop. This is not your fault."
"Your mother's right Clark. No matter how powerful you are or how hard you try, you can't save everyone, and you'll destroy yourself trying." Steve told him, and Clark nodded, looking resigned.
"What's being done about it?"
"That's what we're hear to talk about. We're putting together a team to bring them down, and we'd like you to join us. Everyone from last night except Matt Murdock said yes." Jessica said.
"I don't know. Everyone that gets close to me ends up hurt or killed."
"I know how that feels. You feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulder's, like every death is your fault. It's not son, and you need to understand that. If you don't, the guilt will eat away at you until there's almost nothing left."
"I think I understand." Clark said after several long moments and Steve and Jessica smiled.
"Good. Now will you join us? Will you become an Avenger?"
Clark grinned at the living legends words before he nodded.
"It would be an honor."
With that a new chapter began in the history of the Avengers. The world would never be the same.
A/N: I was reading New Avengers and this just popped into my head! Tell me if I should continue.
