"Nice place." Clark said as he walked into the five story Stark Tower.
"Thank you. It's a pleasure to meet you Mr. Kent."
"The pleasure's mine Mr. Stark." Clark replied, shaking the older man's hand.
"This is Luke Cage, and Spider-Man." He continued, introducing the two next to him.
"That was some good work you did last night." Luke said, but Clark shook his head.
"We did good work. Speaking of which I have a few questions, but first there's something I need to make clear."
Clark looked everyone in the eye, ensuring he had their attention before he continued.
"I'm not good with the whole team thing, and while I'm honored to be here I need to be sure I can trust you all. So I want your word that my powers and my name won't be splashed across the front page of the Daily Bugle or be released during some S.H.I.E.L.D. briefing."
"Why do I get the feeling you weren't talking to me when you said that?" Jessica asked.
"Because I wasn't. Good evening Agent Romanoff." Clark said two seconds later, his hand around the Black Widow's throat.
"How did you know she was there?" Spider-Man asked, and Clark just smiled.
"Trade secret. Although I think the better question is what are you doing here? Unless you forgot to mention her when you told me who was on the team Cap?"
"No I didn't. What are you doing here Natasha?" Steve asked, fixing her with a hard glare.
"What do you think? Somebody has to keep an eye on you."
"S.H.I.E.L.D. had no business to do that!"
"Why do you think Hill let you be on the team Jessica? She wants to be kept in the loop."
"Bullshit. She wants to be able to know how to take us down." Luke interjected, making the woman laugh.
"Can you blame her with all the power you have at your disposal?"
"That's it. I'm sorry, but I'm out." Clark said, dropping Natasha to the floor and walking towards the door.
"Clark wait."
"I'm sorry Captain, but I agreed to join this team to protect the innocent, not so that my every word can be picked apart by a bunch of spies. No offense Jess." He said, and she nodded.
"None taken. Believe me I had no idea this was going to happen."
"I do believe you. Now if you'll excuse me..." He walked towards the door, only to be stopped by Natasha's voice.
"I guess some thing's never change, do they Mr. Kent? Your girlfriend dies and you run away and now-"
"One more word, and I break your neck. You know nothing, do you hear me?! NOTHING!" He yelled, his hands once more at her throat.
"Clark calm down. She's just trying to get under your skin. Don't give her what she wants. Now please let her go."
"I will once she's answered a few questions, starting with how much do you know about me?"
"That's classified, and killing me won't change that."
"Then how about we start with some stuff that we need to know, like who the hell was behind this afternoon's breakout?"
"We think it could be something connected to the Kingpin, but we're not sure. You should be getting whatever security footage was left intact any moment now Stark." She said, and Tony nodded, having just gotten it.
"Clark, we need your help with this, and as much as I don't like it we could use Natasha's too. No matter how much you may not like her, there's a reason she was Fury's number one." Captain America said, and Clark nodded before releasing her.
"Fine, but I'm keeping an eye on you."
"And don't forget, I have assasination authority. So you put a toe out of line, and I will not hesitate to put you down." Jessica said, leaving no one in the room with any doubt that she would follow through on her threat.
"Just remember who we both work for." The other woman replied smoothly as she got up off the floor.
"Tony, can you put the video footage on the screen?" Steve asked, and the armored Avenger nodded, doing as his old friend requested.
The team watched in silence for a moment as the events of last night replayed before their eyes.
"Wait, go back. Now freeze it." He said, and Tony did as requested.
"Take it forward frame by frame."
"What are you looking-" Luke's question died in his throat as they saw a convict change into a man in a blue suit with pale white skin.
"Aw that's just great. It has to be one of my bad guys." Spider-Man muttered, slapping himself in the forehead.
"Meet The Chameleon, shape shifter and all around dirt bag. According to the files I just got he escaped last night, but he wasn't alone. Two others escaped with him."
"Well don't keep us in suspense Stark, who was it?" Clark asked, but Tony shook his head.
"Victor Von Doom."
"Tell me you're kidding."
"I wish I was Jess, but I'm not. As for the other one, well I just can't tell you."
"What do you mean you can't tell us Tony?" Steve asked, frustration clear in his voice.
"I mean Steve, that I literally can't tell you. The person's face has been deleted, and there's a file that I got that I can't access."
"Have miss spy here call her boss and make her open it." Clark said, but Steve shook his head.
"No. It's obvious that someone, somewhere does not want us to find out who that second prisoner was, and whoever they are they have to be pretty high up to be able to tamper with footage and secure files."
"If you're suggesting that Director Hill had something to do with this-" Natasha began, only to be cut off by Steve.
"Well if it wasn't her, then it was someone else highly placed within S.H.I.E.L.D. If we go trying to access that file we could tip our hand, which is not something that we need to do. For now, no one outside of this room is to know about this. Are we clear?"
Everyone nodded in agreement, even Natasha. She may be a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, but she wasn't stupid. If Hill was a traitor then no one needed to know about this.
"So what's next?" Luke asked.
"We go and have a chat with Doom. Everybody go change into your vacation clothes. In an hour we're going to Latveria."
"Please tell me we at least get an inflight movie." Spider-Man muttered as he walked onto the Quinjet.
"Sorry, my DVD collection got destroyed a few months ago." Tony said by way of reply from the pilot's seat, Steve sitting beside him.
"Where are Clark and Jess?" Luke asked, and no sooner had he said the words than Clark Kent walked through the door, Except it wasn't Clark Kent. The man who stood there now was wearing some sort of black armor with a silver S on his chest, with gauntlets on his wrists and legs.
"I hope you don't mind Tony. Jarvis was nice enough to modify some of your armor, just without the helmet and weapons." He said, and Tony just shook his head.
"Not at all, but what does the S stand for?"
"How about Superman?" A voice said from behind them, and Clark turned to find Jess in her Spider-Woman costume.
"Jess I'd like to say in the most politically correct, non-threatening way possible-"
"Hot damn." Clark finished, and Luke nodded.
"Thanks guys." Jess said, although her gaze was focused more on Clark than the others. She walked past Clark and sat beside Natasha, leaving Clark to take the empty seat next to Luke.
"So what does the S stand for?" Luke asked Clark quietly a couple of hours later.
"It's a reminder. But for right now I guess it stands for Superman." He replied, and Luke nodded. Whatever the S reminded his new teammate of he obviously didn't want to talk about it, and so Luke would respect his privacy.
"Tony, can I borrow a phone? I need to tell my mom I'm going to miss dinner."
"There's one built into the armor."
"Cool."
Two minutes later Martha Kent was picking up her cell phone.
"Hello?"
"Hey mom, it's me. I'm going tr be a little late, we may have a lead on the breakout. You and dad need to lock the doors and keep Gradpa's gun close just in case."
"Alright, be careful son."
"Aren't I always?" He replied before hanging up the phone.
The ride continued in silence for a few more hours until Tony broke it.
"Aw crap."
"What's wrong?" Spider-Man asked.
"Our engine just failed."
"That's not good."
"No, it isn't. Now hang on cause this is going to be a rough landing!" He said as the Quinjet hurtled towards the Earth.
