Hi everyone! I hope you like this One shot Kaynie fanfic! Sorry if my grammar isn't correct, I tried my best. Warning! Be prepared for ultimate sap! ;)

(PS: I don't own the mysterious Benedict society.)

Every family has their Christmas traditions, some similar, and others quite diverse.

This includes the mysterious Benedict society, and their family. (Who weren't technically family, but they were just as much family as any other family ever could be.)

Reynie Muldoon, too, shared these traditions, along with his own tradition. A tradition that had been going on for the past four years. A tradition he longed to break every year.

The unsent letter, or rather, the not given letter.

Every year Reynie wrote a letter to a special someone, to be given along with his gift to her. And every year, Reynie couldn't muster up the courage to give it to her. He ended up just storing the letter in a box with all the other unsent letters, and securely hid them in a box under his bed.

This year, Reynie promised himself, would be different. This year he would send the letter.

So there he was, almost midnight, December 24th, standing in front of the beautifully lit Christmas tree, holding the letter that contained his innermost thoughts and feelings toward Kate.

'It's not that hard... just place the letter on the present...'

Reynie reluctantly lowered the letter, to place on the present.

He sighed out loud, in annoyance at himself, and pulled the letter close to his chest.

He just couldn't gather the courage, so he slipped the letter into his back pocket. Or at least he was about to, until...

"Reynie? What are you doing awake?"

Reynie jumped in shock, at the sound of Kate's, dropping the letter.

"Good grief Reynie, it's just me."

Reynie turned around, to meet ocean blue eyes belonging to Kate Wetherall.

"I- Uh, I could ask you that same thing."

Kate plopped herself down on the floor, doing her pretzel-like sitting position.

"Couldn't sleep. You?"

Reynie nervously eyed the letter, that was just a few inches away from Kate.

"Uh, same reason..."

Kate gave him a look of disbelief, "Oh really? You didn't happen to be sneaking an early peek at the presents, now. Did you?"

Reynie gave Kate a mischievous smile, and shrugged.

"Perhaps I was, but you'll never find out.."

"Well, Reynie Muldoon! I've never known you to be so naughty!"

Reynie laughed, and took a seat beside Kate.

"I was just... admiring the Christmas tree. It looks so magical at night, the lights shimmering and reflecting off all the glass ornaments..."

Reynie shifted his eyes from the tree to Kate, she was staring in awe at the Christmas tree. Her ocean blue eyes glimmered from the light of the Christmas tree, and Reynie couldn't help but to think she looked quite beautiful. Now was truly a perfect time to give Kate the letter. Reynie knew there was little chance he would come across a more perfect moment, so he decided to take advantage of this one.

"Y'know, the real reason I can down here was actually..." Reynie reached forward, and grabbed the letter, "This..."

Kate's attention went to Reynie, and the letter he was holding.

"A letter? Oh why... It's addressed to me. Well, now Muldoon. What are you up to?"

"I was planning on giving it to you tomorrow — Well, sort of... — But I think now would be a better time for you to read it..."

Reynie gently placed the letter in Kate's hands, and smiled nervously.

"The letter sorta explains some things.. Some things I wanted you to know... I've been a little scared to give you the letter, but I just really needed to..."

Kate looked up at Reynie, giving him a worried expression, then back down at the letter.

"Reynie.. Have you been hiding some deep dark secret or something? Ooh! You're secretly a Russian spy! Or maybe an escaped convict?"

Reynie laughed nervously, "No, nothing like that. Just read the letter, it'll tell you everything..."

Kate was, of course, kidding. Yet she still found herself nervous to read this letter, which could contain something very personal that Reynie wanted to share with her, and her alone.

She opened the envelope, and slipped out a piece of paper. She unfolded the paper and began to read...

'Dear Kate, You've always been a bright light in my life, like a shimmering star in the night sky. I cherish our friendship, and every moment I'm with you. Every time I look at your ocean blue eyes, I feel comforted. You make me laugh when I'm feeling down. You make me feel brave, when I'm scared out of my wits. I've never ventured to say this out loud to you, but I'm going to say it now. You, Kate Wetherall, are one of the most kind, brave and selfless people I know, and I hope you stay a bright light in my life forever.'

Kate was speechless. She had been taken off guard by the tenderness of Reynie's letter. Her face went a shade of pink, and her eyes

"I.. I don't know what to say..."

Reynie closed his eyes in shame,

"I understand if you don't feel the same way, I just thought you might- well- want to know..

Reynie stood up,and faced the opposite direction of Kate.

"I hope this won't make things.. Awkward between us.. Maybe I should've never written the letter at all.."

Reynie began to sadly walk away, until Kate grabbed his hand, and pulled him back to face her.

"Good grief Reynie! Give me a chance to say something before you start walking away! I thought what you said in the letter was really sweet. I'm glad you told me how you felt."

Reynie gave Kate a look of pleasantly-surprised shock.

"You are?"

Kate rolled her eyes and smiled.

"Yes, silly. I liked what you said in your letter, and I'm really glad that you said it.

Besides, it took you long enough!"

Before Reynie could even respond, Kate leaned in, and gave Reynie a solid kiss on the lips.

"Now Reynie! Why haven't you ever told me you could do an impression of a tomato like that?"

Reynie, who indeed has turned a tomato red, smiled sheepishly and shrugged.

"I suppose it just never came up in conversation."

Kate smirked, and glanced around the room.

"I guess we should head to bed before we wake somebody up..."

Reynie nodded, and they did just that.

"Goodnight, Kate."

"Goodnight, Reynie."

Reynie had no trouble falling asleep, Because as far as he was concerned, he had gotten everything he wanted.

Yes, I know. It was cliche and sappy. But I hope you still enjoyed it, cause I sure enjoyed writing it! Comment if you want me to write more! Or don't, I'm probably still going to keep making this sappy stuff anyway!
