AUTHOR'S NOTE 2: I started writing this before I saw episode 11 of the show I'm crossing BTVS with, so it is a bit off cannon.

The Butler Did it

Xander gave Faith a puzzled frown as the old man with the well-trimmed beard, impeccably dressed in a black suit that wouldn't have looked out of place on the classic mage of a butler, walked away from the scene of carnage. Faith shrugged and shook her head, indicating that she didn't know either.

The man looked entirely human, but he had just single-handedly busted up a gang of highly skilled fighters, leaving several of them dead. They hadn't spent too much time examining the bodies, not wanting to be blamed for what happened. They had seen enough to know, however, that the old man was inhumanly strong.

He had a young blonde woman with him who looked quite happy to be in his company. As she hadn't been with him when he went into the building, it seemed at least possible that he had freed her from them. They decided to follow the pair to learn more, especially as hanging about the scene might draw unwanted attention and trouble.

OOOOOOOOOO

They had emerged from the latest portal in an empty building of decidedly antiquated design. The rough stone walls, open rafters, and plain, untreated plank floor made the place look medieval at best. Taking a careful look outside, they saw a bustling city, the people of which were dressed in a fashion that matched the setting. Rough cloth forming simple tunics and trousers for the lower classes were very much in evidence. They also saw silks and other expensive looking cloths for nobles and wealthier citizens.

Looking at the clothes they currently wore, the two decided they would blend well enough and headed out to explore. Everything they saw pointed to a fantasy world of some sort. The men and women in full armour and carrying swords and similar weapons seemed to confirm that.

The shops offering potions and magical items seemed to confirm it. Xander considered picking up a magical doohickey or two, but they quickly confirmed that none of the currency they'd collected from other worlds was acceptable, and neither had any gold or jewels.

Disappointed, they went on their way but had only been wandering the streets, taking in the sights as they couldn't afford to do more, for about half an hour before they saw the distinguished looking older man in a well-tailored suit entering a decidedly seedy looking establishment. That had seemed none of their business and hadn't actually garnered much attention until the screaming started from inside.

Sneaking into the building after him to investigate, they discovered the place to be a brothel with very unwilling workers. As their captors were busy at the moment, the two demon hunters took the opportunity to free them and get them out of the building. They had no idea whether the local authorities considered forced servitude of that sort a crime, but they did, and the girls seemed okay with being let out, so it didn't really matter. It didn't take long for the old man to finish off the men guarding the place and leave with the girl he had apparently come for.

The two hunters maintained a careful distance from the pair, blending with the crowd where they could. When the crowd thinned out, which it did as the neighbourhood got better, they took turn offs and watched from hiding until he got out of sight and then followed. It was risky as there was a chance of losing them, but it was better than being spotted.

The two eventually led them to a mansion in one of the better parts of town. They made note of the location and drew back a bit to discuss their options. They didn't actually know if the man was any kind of threat. All he'd done was bust up a, hopefully illegal, brothel and leave most of the girls there prisoner.

They were still debating when a voice behind them commented. "You might have simply asked."

They turned to find the man they had been following standing behind them. He was hard to read with the neatly trimmed beard and moustache hiding part of his face, but he was either amused or irritated. Possibly both.

"What do you want?" He wasn't one to mince words, apparently. He was also taller and broader than he looked from a distance. Having gotten close to them without making a sound, he was currently looming over them, waiting for an answer.

"We saw what happened at the brothel," Faith answered, not the sort to be intimidated by anyone. "You went in and came out with one girl. The rest, you left in there. Locked up and helpless."

"My primary concern was my servant, Tuare," he answered smoothly. "Freeing the rest-"

"Would have taken a minute, tops." Xander broke in. "We were curious about your reasons. I guess now we know. Helping people in trouble is always the right thing to do, but I guess for some, it's too much effort."

To their surprise, the man flinched at the words and looked away. After a moment, during which he seemed involved in some internal struggle, perhaps with his conscience, he sighed. "My reasons are my own and not your concern. I've no intention of justifying myself."

"No need," Xander assured him. "Like I said, we were just curious."
