Dexter woke up that morning to the sound of his alarm clock. He grunted, and rolled over to smack the annoying thing off the table, but paused, for two reasons. One, buying another would be a bitch, and two, he didn't want to clean up the mess.

All joking aside, today was the big day, and he didn't want to miss it. He was going to get his first Moemon and go on a journey. What kind of journey, you may ask. He doesn't know, but everyone wants to be the Champion these days, so he could shoot for that.

Dexter may be a lot of things, but he wasn't somebody who would show up late. Most of the time. However, he was determined not to pull what has been lovingly called an 'Ash Ketchum' for whatever reason. He would show up on time, he would show up on time.

He showed up around a second late, unfortunately. However that didn't stop him from shouting "WAIIIIIT!" at the top of his lungs as he approached the laboratory.

The good natured Professor Cacao (yes that's his name, why are all the professors named after trees? It's stupid. Also all the good ones are taken, so I'm stuck with a cacao tree...) turned to him and sighed.

"There's always one," He muttered, "luckily all professors have conveniently prepared for this."

"Don't tell me... I was too late, wasn't I?" Dexter said, stopping in front of the Professor.

"Indeed my boy, you were too late. Unfortunately in that literal one second all the Moemon had been chosen by trainers, who also managed to start on their journey in that literal one second."

Dexter began sulking, and the Professor put his hand on his shoulder.

"Not to fret, my boy! We always keep a spare in the back, just in case some kid decides a few extra minutes of sleep is more important than the journey of a lifetime!"

Through tears, Dexter asked, "is it a Pikachu?"

"What? Oh God, no. That's horribly cliched." The Professor seemed appalled, "I've got something better."

He presses a button on the wall and descending from the ceiling came a single Moeball.

Professor Cacao grabbed the ball and threw it. It opened with a flash of light and then standing in front of Dexter was a Moemon (no shit).

She wore a pale blue dress that went down to her knees, and had two white fins coming out of the sides of her head, emerging from blue hair, the same color as her dress, that was cut down to her shoulders. She had a pale blue tail that swayed from side to side nervously as she stared at Dexter.

"This is a Dratini," the Professor said, "she's a Dragon type Moemon. She's a little shy, so I'd be gentle around her."

Dexter nodded, and looked the girl in the eyes. "Hey there, Dratini..." he said to her, "do you wanna go on a journey with me?"

She looked up at the Professor, who nodded. The Dratini smiled, and turned back to Dexter, nodding to him.

"Well, that settles it," the Professor said, handing Dexter the Moeball, "she's yours. Why don't you give her a name?"

Dexter thought for a minute, and then a name came to him. "How about Drya?" He asked her.

Drya nodded enthusiastically.

"One last thing," the Professor said, handing him a device, "this is a Moedex. It has all sorts of information about Moemon. Try scanning Drya with it."

Dexter held the device out and scanned her.

Drya

Dratini were once considered mythical Moemon until recently, when a large colony of Dratini were found under a lake. This Moemon is very shy, and can grow quite large before it even evolves.

Dexter put the Moedex away, "that's pretty nifty." He commented.

"Indeed. Now, I'm assuming I don't need to explain anything about how to take care of your Moemon, correct?" The Professor asked.

"Uh..."

"You didn't study at all, did you?"

Dexter looked down at his feet.

The Professor sighed again, "well, before a Moemon can truly recognize their trainer, they must enter a sort of pact. This pact is rather... intimate, and most trainers need to fully understand their Moemon's temperament before they prepare for it, lest they want to get drained."

Dexter nodded along, wishing that there was a skip tutorial option here.

Most of the lecture went in one ear and out the other, but Dexter did understand a fragment of it.

When Cacao finished his lecture, he sent Dexter off with a wave, before turning around and muttering something about how Dexter was soooooo fucked.

Drya walked along beside him, looking up at him without saying a word.

They arrived back at his house, and Dexter opened the door for her.

His parents were out overseas working and for whatever reason trusted him with the house. Well, nobody's gonna stop him from adventuring, least of all responsibility!

Anyways, he packed what remained of his things, and set out on his journey, excited for the things to come.
