Author's Note: This story is kind of in the middle of Turf Wars, canon-compliant. But anyway, for those who didn't read the comic, I'll quickly summarize: Korra and Asami return from the spirit world vacation officially a couple, although they kind of keep it to themselves to avoid bigotry about their same-sex relationship. Mako finds out during a fight at the Republic City spirit portal when Asami gets hurt, Korra freaks out, and then kisses Asami in front of everyone. Mako's kind of weird about it (not because of them both being girls, just because they're his exes). Read, review, let me know what you think! LOK owned by nickolodean and MDD and BK and its creators.
The Bird-Bees
Mako's hands clenched tight on the steering wheel as they wove through the streets of Republic City. Bolin sat beside him, chattering about his date from the night before with Opal and something else that Mako wasn't actually listening to. He supposed he should be grateful; his little brother was just trying to distract him from the dark turn of his thoughts.
Korra and Asami. Together. Why were they together? He had dated both of them first, and while both relationships hadn't ended perfectly, they were all still friends. They were still 'Team Avatar'. But with this new dynamic between the two of them, everything will become skewed and… awkward. He wondered if they had even thought of that before they started dating.
Up ahead, one of the glass-front stores that lined the street was shattered. It was a local jewelry store. The owner had recently installed metal bars behind the glass due to a string of recent crime activity, but a mediocre metal bender could easily dispatch them. Something to that effect must have happened, because several dark figures now climbed out of the broken glass, heavily laden with stolen goods. Mako stepped on the gas pedal, steering the police wagon over to the ongoing crime.
"Dispatch, this is Mako," he called over the radio. "We have a 10-62 in progress at the jewelry store on Yangchen Street. Mako and Bolin in pursuit."
"Copy, Mako," dispatch responded. "Do you need back-up?"
"Just crime scene analysts. We'll call back in five."
"Pull over there," Bolin said, pointing. "I can probably get a few of them."
Mako nodded, and Bolin opened the car door, holding on with one arm while using his arm to make a strong sweeping motion. A wall of stone erupted from the pavement, blocking the path of several of the criminals. Two of them quickly flipped over the wall, but a third smacked directly into it, landing unceremoniously on his back.
Mako threw the wagon into park and leapt out, handcuffs at the ready. "Stop, you're under arrest- Ping?"
Two-Toed Ping sat on his bottom, surrounded by stolen goods, rubbing the angry red spot that now formed on his forehead where he had hit the wall. "Hey, Mako. Good to see ya."
Bolin ran over, leaning on his knees to catch his breath. "The rest of them got away, Mako. They had a getaway car ready to go, sorry. At least we got one- Ping?"
"Bolin!" Ping exclaimed, delighted.
"Ugh, get up, Ping," Mako snapped, grabbing Ping under the arm and hauling him to his feet. "You're coming downtown. For the third time this month. I'd read you your rights, but I feel like you have them just as memorized as I do."
"Sure, sure," Ping said, unbothered. "Only could you post my bail a little higher this time? My boss wasn't too happy that my bail was only fifty yuans… small fish, he called me."
Mako ignored him, dragging him to the back of the police wagon. He thrust Ping into the back, slamming the door shut, and throwing himself back into the driver's seat. "Come on, Bo, let's go. I can't wait to fill out paperwork for this guy, again."
"At least most of the fields will be pre-filled," Bolin said brightly. "Since we've already got his citizen ID, and his date of birth, and his home of record, and his rap sheet, and his immediate family and emergency contacts from the last two times."
Mako grunted. He reached for the radio, calling dispatch again. "One in custody. En route to Station." He slammed the radio back into its holder.
"Geeze, what's with him?" Ping asked from the holding cell. A sturdy wall of decorative grating separated them, but unfortunately for Mako, they were perfectly capable of hearing one another.
Bolin started to answer, but Mako cut him off. "Bo, don't answer that. He's under arrest." He turned to look back over his shoulder at Ping. "You're under arrest, Ping, we're not having a conversation."
"I think I know what this is about," Ping said in a soothing voice. "I heard a rumor from the Creeping Crystals that your ex-girlfriend and your other ex-girlfriend are dating. Each other." Mako saw the commiserating look Ping gave him through the rear-view mirror. "Tough break, kid."
"Shut up, Ping," Mako snarled.
"You must be one bad boyfriend," Ping continued, as if he hadn't heard Mako at all.
"Don't be gross, Ping," Bolin interjected. "Mako's a great boyfriend! He's a good listener, and a former Pro-bending champion. He's a real catch," Bolin winked at his brother. "But Korra and Asami have been making eyes at each other for years now. I'm surprised we didn't all see this coming. I'm happy for them. And it has nothing to do with Mako, really."
"No?" Ping asked, surprised. "So you don't think there's any way you could… you know?" Ping winked at Mako.
"I literally just told you not to be gross, Ping," Bolin complained.
Ping raised his eyebrows. "You two got a problem with same-sex couples?"
"Ping, for spirit's sake, be quiet," Mako groaned.
"I'm just saying, Mako, that's kinda rude…. Your parents never taught you two about the bird-bees?"
At the stop sign, Mako slammed on the brakes, and turned around to face Ping. "No, my parents never brought sex and it's variety of pairings before they were brutally murdered by a local gang."
Under his breath, Ping muttered, "What a buzzkill."
"Classic Mako," Bolin agreed.
"So is that the problem?" Ping continued. "You don't like gay people or something?"
"Spirits, Ping!" Mako shouted, finally broken down by Ping's persistence. "No, I have no problem whatsoever with same-sex couples. The problem is not that Korra and Asami are both girls, you idiot, the problem is that they're both my exes!"
"So, what is it, then?" Ping mused. "Is it a 'if I can't have 'em, no one can' kind of thing?"
Mako glared at him through the rear-view mirror. "No, of course not!"
"Then what's the problem?"
"Nothing!" Mako shouted.
An uncomfortable silence descended over the car and its inhabitants, but Mako barely noticed. He was in the midst of a personal epiphany. There really was no problem. While he was very fond of both Korra and Asami, he had realized long ago that he wasn't remotely interested in rekindling a romantic relationship with either of them. Korra was one of his best friends, but their time dating had been, in a word, rough. The sailing had been so much smoother ever since they had mutually agreed that they were better off as friends. And speaking of sailing, that ship had sailed with Asami long ago. He almost winced at how poorly he'd handled their romantic relationship.
But Korra and Asami, despite their differences (differences that Mako himself had caused) had become close friends, and eventually, something more. They had both suffered a great deal in the past few years- Asami had lost her father, in several different ways, and Korra had dealt with trauma and PTSD from which she was still recovering. They both deserved to be happy, and he genuinely wanted them to be happy. And if that meant with each other, then he supported it without reservations. Bolin was right. It didn't have anything to do with him.
"There is no problem," Mako muttered under his breath. "This was… weirdly helpful. Thanks, Ping."
Ping winked. "No problem, Mako. Happy to do a favor to help out a friend. And speaking of favors, you're more than welcome to return the favor by dropping me off on Front Street instead of taking me to the station."
"No," said Mako and Bolin at the same time.
Author's second note: I'm probably in the majority of people who think ATLA was better than LOK, but i enjoyed it still. One thing I didn't enjoy was the relationship nonsense that took place in the first and second seasons. I was firmly Makorra, and I still like them, even though the storyline completely and entirely sunk that ship. But the comic doesn't really dive into Mako's thought process behind accepting his two friends and exes in their relationship. He does, eventually, and its a really sweet moment of acceptance. Korrasami was an awesome addition and if Korra and Mako can't be together, I'm thrilled that its Korra x Asami instead.
