A/N: Since the scenes with Kara in the virtual reality will be the same as in canon, aside from Brainy introducing himself to her, they won't be shown in the chapter.
Chapter 7
(Kara's apartment)
Kara opened her eyes as she woke up in her bed. With a yawn, she sat up and heard someone knocking on the door. Getting up, she headed to the door and opened it. Standing on the other side was a man with shoulder-length white hair and pale blue skin with three bright bluish-white dots lit up on his forehead. He was dressed in black clothing.
"It's you," the man said.
"Can I help you?" Kara asked.
"Now you're talking to me," the man said. "Supergirl is talking to me."
"Inside, now," Kara instructed, letting him in before she closed the door.
"I am Brainiac 5," the man introduced himself. "Half computer, half organic life form, all Coluan, and, not to brag, but a twelfth-level intellect. My name is Querl Dox, but the Legionnaires just call me Brainy."
"Legionnaires? Did Mon-El send you?" Kara asked.
"Yes, yes, to make sure that your neural pathways are clear and intact," Brainy explained. "Your brain is in truly remarkable health for someone languishing in a coma."
Kara frowned. "Uh, I'm sorry, did you say coma?"
"Mmm, did I bury the lede? You've been in a coma for two days," Brainy clarified.
"I'm in my loft," Kara scoffed.
"Oh, you mean the physical manifestation of the place in which your subconscious feels most comfortable," Brainy corrected. "That loft?"
"If I'm in a coma, how are you here?" Kara wondered.
"Mon-El woke me up from hypersleep to communicate with you on behalf of him and your D.E.O. compatriots," Brainy explained. "31st century technology. It's also what's keeping you alive."
"Alive?" Kara questioned.
"Reign defeated you," Brainy reminded her. "Don't you remember?"
Suddenly, Kara experienced flashes of her brutal fight with Reign and subsequent defeat at the hands of the Worldkiller. A few moments later, an alarmed look appeared on her face. "No, this is crazy, this... Reign is still out there. People are dying, I have to wake up."
She rushed towards the door.
"Oh, I don't think you're listening to me," Brainy said.
Kara tried to open the door, but for some reason it wouldn't open. "What?" she muttered in shock. She pulled the handle harder, but the door still wouldn't budge. Getting frustrated, she continued to pull with all her might, but no matter how much strength she exerted, the door just wouldn't open.
"Can we just, maybe, relax a little bit?" Brainy told her.
Kara continued to pull the handle, but was not having any luck. "Dammit! It won't open!"
She whirled around, panting frantically. How was she going to wake up from her coma? The longer she remained in this virtual reality, the more people Reign could kill in the real world.
(Legion's ship)
Kara was unconscious in one of the chambers, most of the injuries on her face healed though there was still some bruising around her left eye. A white device was resting on her forehead. Brainy was standing in front of the chamber, his eyes closed before he opened them. He turned to Barry, Cisco, Winn, Alex, J'onn, Mon-El, and Imra.
"Well, the good news is her mind is active and alert," Brainy explained.
"Oh, thank God," Alex sighed with relief.
"The bad news is, she is very angry," Brainy informed.
"Well, I'm sure she loves being trapped inside a mind prison," Winn said, sarcastically.
"Are you talking to Kara right now at the same time you're talking to us?" Barry asked.
"The crown connects to my internal A.I. core," Brainy stated, pointing to the device on Kara's head. "It translates her brainwaves to English and sends electronic signals back to her."
"These tanks have incredible healing power, so she just needs to rest and let it do its work," Imra said.
"You're from the future," Alex said to Mon-El. "Did you know this was gonna happen?"
"No, but she's through the worst of it, she'll live," Mon-El said.
"But when will she wake up?" J'onn wondered, concerned for the young woman who was like a daughter to him.
"We don't know," Mon-El answered.
"Well, Reign is still out there," J'onn said. "I don't like our odds without Supergirl by our side."
"I mean, Reign's been quiet, maybe she got injured too," Winn said.
"Let's hope so," Alex said. "It's only a matter of time before she strikes again."
"Cisco and I know someone who can help," Barry said, as he and the other young man exchanged glances.
Earth-1
(Central City)
Conner dodged a blow from King Shark before punching him in the chest twice, staggering the half-man, half-shark meta back. King Shark reached out in an attempt to grab him, but Conner easily sidestepped out of the way.
Wally delivered multiple speed-punches to King Shark's torso, causing the latter to roar in pain. King Shark tried to smack Wally in the chest, but the speedster avoided the blow as he jumped out of the way. Conner slammed his fist into the side of King Shark's head, sending him down as he fell unconscious.
"He's down," Conner said with relief.
"I still don't understand how all these guys keep escaping," Wally sighed. "I swear, Barry defeated this guy twice already."
The two heroes whirled around as they heard a familiar noise behind them and saw a breach open before Cisco jumped out of it.
"Cisco," Wally called out.
"Superboy, we need you on Earth-38," Cisco said.
"What are we up against?" Conner wasted no time asking.
"I'll explain everything to you once we get this dude back to his cage," Cisco said, glancing down at King Shark.
Earth-38
(Legion's ship)
Barry, Alex, Winn, J'onn, Mon-El, and Imra were standing in front of several screens watching the news, which was showing Reign giving a message at CatCo.
"This man was a thief, condemned by his own actions," Reign stated on the screen, glancing down at the dead body of her latest victim. "You've allowed sin to take root and fester like a weed. And worst of all, you have looked away. Apathy is the greatest sin of all. From now on, it will be punished in kind. There will be no more mercy. There will only be justice. I'm here to help."
"She's declaring war on criminality in National City," J'onn said.
"She doesn't wanna just target criminals," Barry said. "She also plans to go after the entire justice system."
"We have to stop her," Alex said.
"We will," Barry said, confidently.
Suddenly, the opening of a breach got everyone's attention. They watched as Cisco and Conner emerged from the breach before it closed.
"Okay, everybody, I'm back and I got our help," Cisco announced. "Some of you have already met him last week, but for those of you who haven't," he shot glances at Mon-El, Imra, and Brainy, "this is Superboy. He's originally from what we call Earth-21, but for the past year he's been living on mine and Barry's Earth, Earth-1."
Mon-El noticed the red 'S' symbol on the newcomer's chest. "So you're related to Kal and Kara."
"You could say that," Conner nodded, before extending his hand. "I'm Conner, Conner Kent."
"Mon-El," Mon-El said, as he shook Conner's hand.
Conner frowned. "Mon-El? Wait, are you related to..."
"No, I'm not related to members of Krypton's House of El," Mon-El answered. "I'm from Daxam."
"Okay," Conner nodded.
"That's my wife Imra Ardeen," Mon-El said, pointing to the beautiful brunette before pointing to the man with pale blue skin and white hair. "And that's Brainiac 5, but just call him Brainy."
"It's nice to meet you, Superboy," Brainy said.
"You guys too," Conner replied, intrigued by meeting two more very different counterparts of people from his universe.
"And you've already met J'onn J'onzz, Winn Schott, and Alex Danvers," Barry said, gesturing to the three people in question.
"Yeah," Conner nodded.
"Can I assume Mr. Ramon already briefed you on the enemy that he brought you here to help us stop?" J'onn asked.
"He did," Conner answered. "It's a Kryptonian called Reign, right? Who beat Supergirl into a coma and has been going around killing criminals in cold-blood?"
"That's her," Alex nodded.
"Okay, so in addition to Conner, we have three of the Legion of Superheroes to help us right now," Barry said.
"I owe you all my life," Mon-El said. "And I hope you know that I would do anything I could for you. But, unfortunately, this can't be our fight."
"What do you mean this can't be your fight?" Barry asked.
"Don't tell me you're cowering out on us," Cisco remarked.
"Surely we can help them somehow," Imra said to her husband.
"If we die now, we will endanger the future," Mon-El said.
"What do you mean?" J'onn asked.
"We're on a mission," Mon-El answered.
"Careful," Brainy said.
"Our involvement here could jeopardize that," Mon-El said. "I can tell you what we do know. We know that Supergirl lives. And we know that eventually Reign will leave."
Winn chuckled.
"So that's... That's all you can give? That's all you got?" Alex asked to Mon-El.
"We really don't know much at all," Imra said.
"In the year 2455, Earth experienced a third-degree extinction phenomenon," Brainy said.
"Humanity came together, but Earth suffered catastrophic destruction," Imra said. "It wasn't just loss of life. It was its history, culture, art, music."
"It was everything interesting," Brainy said.
"Mon-El taught us everything we know," Imra said. "From Aristotle, Shakespeare, Bon Jovi."
"But we have some gaps," Mon-El said. "And, unfortunately, even if we know the end result, we don't necessarily know how it happens."
"So we know that Supergirl lives, and we know that Reign leaves, eventually," Alex said.
"But before she does, she could slaughter who-knows-how-many people," Barry pointed out.
"Not if I help you guys," Conner said.
"We'll initiate the Sundown Protocol," J'onn stated. "A highly classified contingency plan to take down Superman if ever he turns against us. Red sun grenades, sound bombs, kryptonite darts, everything we'd need to take down a rogue Kryptonian on the loose."
"Do what you have to," Conner nodded to J'onn in understanding. "If kryptonite and red sunlight is what it's gonna take to defeat Reign, even I'm all for it."
"But we don't have any more kryptonite," Winn said. "Clark got rid of it all."
"Clark got rid of it for a reason, and a reason that Kara agreed to," Alex said.
"That was before Reign," J'onn pointed out. "We still have the kryptonite from Coville's probe, right?"
"Prep whatever you have to, but before you use it, there's someone I have to talk to," Alex said.
(Albatross Bay)
Alex entered the visiting room where Thomas Coville, whose hands were bound in handcuffs, was once again sitting at the table. He had a black eye on the left side of his face.
Alex sat down across from him. "Ooh, your eye," she noticed Coville's injury. "What happened to you?"
"I was spreading the truth to my fellow inmates," Coville explained. "They would have preferred I lied."
"Do you want to spread a little truth to me?" Alex asked. "I'll pass it along to Supergirl. You're her biggest fan, right?" Coville scoffed as Alex continued. "She said that you knew about the reign of the beast. What else do you know that can help us beat her?"
"Beat her? She's already won," Coville said.
Alex shook her head. "No. Supergirl's still alive."
"She was supposed to rise, find her faith, and deliver it," Coville stated. "But Supergirl refused her faith and she failed the test."
"Supergirl will defeat her," Alex said, with determination. "You just have to help us stop her."
"Supergirl lost, so that Reign can prepare us for what comes next," Coville said.
"Never underestimate Supergirl," Alex said firmly, before getting up and leaving the visiting room.
(Legion's ship)
Kara was now out of the chamber as she was lying on the chair, still unconscious. Barry, Conner, Alex, Brainy, Mon-El, and Imra were gathered around her.
"Come on, Kara, snap out of it," Alex sighed.
"Brainy will figure it out," Mon-El assured her.
"Don't over promise," Brainy said. "I've never seen anything like this before." He turned to Alex with an apologetic look. "Sorry, insensitive."
"You have nothing to be sorry for, Brainy," Barry said. "You're doing everything within your power to help her. The only person responsible for this is Reign."
"What happens if she stays like this?" Alex asked Brainy.
"The longer she remains unconscious, the more likely it is that it will become permanent," he answered.
Suddenly, the alarm started blaring, accompanied by a red light flashing.
"Reign's attacking again," Mon-El realized, before he, Barry, Conner, Alex, Brainy, and Imra rushed into the bridge of the ship.
"I'm getting us a feed," Brainy said, before the screens showed a building on fire. "She attacked a meth lab. The cops arrived, she attacked them too." He paused for a moment. "I'll run another scan on Kara."
He headed back in the room with the chambers to check on her.
"We could really use you guys' help," Barry said to Mon-El and Imra.
"He's right, Mon-El," Imra said.
"We can't risk it," Mon-El shook his head.
"Risk what?" Barry asked.
Mon-El and Imra headed over to the main console and brought up a hologram of a planet. "So a thousand years from now, this farming planet Winath goes dark. Our friend Ayla, she's from there, so she goes to check it out."
"Ayla? As in Lightning Lass, Lightning Lad's brother?" Conner asked.
"Yeah, how did you know that?" Mon-El asked.
"Because we have a Legion of Superheroes from the future in my universe too," Conner said, before turning to Imra. "I even know a version of you, even though she's blonde with a very different face."
"Really?" Imra asked, intrigued.
"Yeah," Conner answered.
"I'm sure you'd look every bit as beautiful as you are now if your hair was blonde," Mon-El said to his wife.
"Thanks, but I prefer to keep it this color," Imra said with a smile, as she ran her hand down her dark brown hair.
"What exactly happened to this planet Winath?" Alex inquired.
"Winath was a paradise, but Ayla made planet-fall and found it..."
"Decimated," Mon-El finished Imra's sentence. He pressed a button and Winath's hologram changed color from green to red. "It was completely dried out."
"The creatures that did this, we call them the Blight," Imra said. "They consume everything in their path."
"And Brainy found a way to stop them, but they were on us before we could use it," Mon-El said, pressing another button before the hologram disappeared.
"So we hid the information in the safest place we could," Imra said. "Our DNA. Where it can't be lost, it can't be stolen. It's written in our genes."
"That's why you guys don't wanna risk getting killed by Reign," Barry realized. "Because if you die, this information will be lost and you'll have no way to defeat the Blight."
"Exactly," Mon-El said. "You have no idea how badly I wish we could help."
"It's fine, Mon-El, we understand now why you and Imra can't help," Barry nodded.
"Just make sure my sister wakes up," Alex said to Mon-El. As she, Barry, and Conner started heading off, Alex tapped her earpiece and said, "J'onn, where are you on Sundown?"
"Sound guns are almost done, but the grenades will take an hour at least," he replied. "And we still don't know where Reign is gonna strike next."
"I think I know how to get ahead of her," Alex said.
"You wanna draw her out by becoming her next target," Barry realized.
"Do you have any better options?" Alex asked.
"None that I could think of," Barry said. "Let's do whatever it takes to stop her."
(National City Savings and Loans)
Two masked figures, a man and a woman, rushed into the bank pointing machine guns at the customers. They were carrying duffle bags around their shoulders.
"Get on the ground! Get on the ground! Don't look at me!" the man ordered, before he and the woman fired their machine guns in the air. "Get on the ground! This is a robbery! Don't look at me!" He jumped on top of a desk as he and the woman continued firing in the air and turned to a nearby employee who reached his hand towards the alarm button. "Don't touch that button! Nobody move! Nobody move!"
"Hurry up!" the woman ordered, pointing her weapon at a clerk who prepared to put money in her duffle bag.
Suddenly, a black blur crashed through one of the windows, shattering it, as Reign entered the bank descending to the floor.
"You were warned," she said, glaring at the two masks figures.
The masked figures turned to Reign and took off their ski masks, revealing them to be J'onn and Alex disguised as bank robbers. Cisco and several agents, who all had been disguised as customers, appeared next to J'onn and Alex as they pointed their large guns at Reign.
Alex took out a device containing red light and pressed a button on it, causing the device to beep. "Catch," she said, before throwing the device at Reign.
The device exploded into a bright red light, throwing Reign to the ground as she was weakened. The light disappeared a few moments later.
"Light her up!" J'onn ordered.
Cisco and the agents fired their weapons, emitting sonic waves that hit Reign dead on as she fell to her knees grunting in pain.
Behind Reign, Superboy and Flash leapt down from the upper level of the bank, holding a heavy metal wire from either end. They placed the wire on Reign's neck, using all their strength to hold her down with it.
One of the agents handed Alex a round chain containing a piece of kryptonite. Alex walked up to Reign and placed the chain around her neck, weakening Reign as she cried out in pain. However, due to being only a few feet from it, the piece of kryptonite also weakened Conner, causing him to almost fall to his knees as he did his best to stay standing and not let go of the wire.
Reign let out an angry scream as she grabbed the right side of the wire and swung it forward, sending Barry flying several meters before he landed on the floor. She then swung the left side of the wire, sending Conner flying too. Next, she swung the wire like a whip, wrapping it around Alex's right leg before a loud crack sound was heard and Alex fell to the ground as she cried out in pain.
A pissed Reign got back to her feet and removed the chain of kryptonite from around her neck. She dropped the chain to the floor and grabbed Alex's arm. Before any more harm could come to Alex, J'onn quickly intervened and punched Reign in the chest, knocking her back. Reign got back up and flew off, shattering another window on the way out.
(Legion's ship)
Alex was sitting in the pilot chair while Brainy was working on the brace he had put on her leg.
"Are you okay?" Imra asked, as she and Mon-El entered the bridge.
"Considering my tibia's been snapped in half?" Alex said.
"And what about Reign?" Mon-El inquired.
"She shrugged off that kryptonite like it was nothing," J'onn said.
"Ah!" Alex exclaimed in pain, as she looked at Brainy. "Yes, thanks, that's good." Turning to the others, she said, "The same amount incapacitated Kara."
"The kryptonite seemed to weaken Reign at first, but then it's like she became resistant to it," Barry said.
"Any idea why?" Mon-El asked.
"Maybe she's not just your average Kryptonian," Cisco suggested.
"Well, the soil did hurt her, just not enough," Alex said.
"You have a plan?" J'onn asked.
"Concentrate it," Alex said. "We'll put it straight in her bloodstream. Jugular should work."
"I'll take care of that," Barry said. "All I need to do is get close enough to her, make sure she doesn't lay a finger on me, and inject the kryptonite into her."
Alex nodded in agreement.
(Later, Legion's ship)
"Reign is finding bigger targets," J'onn said. "She wants to teach us an abject lesson."
"She's going to cleanse the sinners our society locked away," Alex said. "The ones that she feels were granted mercy."
"Albatross Bay," Barry realized. "That's where she's headed next."
Suddenly, the monitor started beeping as everyone turned to it.
"She's already there," Mon-El noted.
"I'm guessing she's gonna kill everyone there, no matter if they're prisoners or guards," Conner said. "We have to stop her."
"Conner and I got this," Barry said.
"You two won't have to fight her alone," Mon-El said.
"What do you mean?" Barry asked.
"You know, we've been asleep for many years," Mon-El said.
"And we ought to get some exercise," Imra added.
"You're being facetious?" Brainy asked.
Mon-El chuckled. "This guy."
"So you guys are joining us after all," Conner asked.
"We are," Mon-El nodded, before looking at Imra. "Time to suit up."
(Albatross Bay)
Reign had marched through the prison, dozens of dead bodies belonging to both guards and inmates scattered on the ground as some were in pools of blood while others had burn marks, obviously due to heat vision, on their chests. She stopped next to Coville's cell as she heard him speaking.
"Heir of Juru, architect of the renewal, I submit to you," Coville stated. He was down on his knees with his hands spread out looking at Reign's symbol that he had drawn on the wall. "For Rao is the light, but he was born of fire."
Reign walked up behind him. "How do you know those words?"
Coville turned around to face her. "I was awoken to them."
"People are quick to claim salvation when faced with death," Reign stated. "Do you think that is enough for me to spare you?"
"You don't have to spare me," Coville said. "You just have to let me serve you."
Suddenly, "Living On A Prayer" by Bon Jovi started blaring outside, getting Reign's attention. She headed off, punching a large hole in a wall and stepping outside.
The Legion's ship rose out of the water. Inside the ship, Brainy was sitting in the pilot's seat. "I think we've got her attention," he said.
"You don't say," Mon-El replied, as he, Imra, Flash, and Superboy approached Reign on the ground.
"You will not interfere with my mission," Reign stated, glaring at the heroes.
"Interfering is what we do best," Conner said.
"You're done killing people," Barry said.
"I've only come to cleanse the sin of this world," Reign said.
"Tell that to the prison guards you murdered," Conner remarked. "They were only doing their jobs. They didn't deserve to die."
"If you're cleansing this world of sin like you claim, why didn't you start with yourself?" Imra said to Reign.
"I'm not of this world," the Worldkiller replied, before flying into the air.
"Neither are we," Mon-El said.
With that, he, Conner, and Imra levitated into the air as the Legion's ship hovered behind them. A powerful white beam shot out of the ship towards Reign, but Reign flew back to the ground avoiding it. The ship fired several more white beams. Even though the beams missed her, their impacts threw Reign back against the gate.
Conner and Mon-El flew down towards Reign, who unleashed her heat vision at them. Conner swerved out of the way, while Mon-El was knocked back as the heat vision hit him in the chest. Conner continued flying towards Reign and punched her twice in the face. Conner threw a third punch, but Reign blocked it and punched him in the chest instead, knocking him to the ground. Conner got back up and levitated into the air right before Reign did the same. Conner then unleashed his freeze breath while Reign unleashed hers too. The two sides clashed halfway, struggling to overpower each other. After several seconds, Reign's freeze breath pushed back Conner's, knocking him off balance. She then flew at Conner and rammed her shoulder into his chest, sending him crashing to the ground, damaging it where he landed.
Reign descended in front of Conner, but before she could make another move, a metal weight plate smacked into the side of Reign's head, breaking in half on impact as Reign was unaffected. She turned to see Imra using telekinesis to hurl eight more weight plates at her. Reign fired just as many blasts of heat vision, shattering all eight plates into pieces.
Then, a flash of yellow-orange lightning appeared around Reign and Barry wasted no time sticking the syringe of kryptonite into the side her neck, causing Reign to groan in agony. A few seconds later, Reign shot straight up into the sky at full speed and took off.
(Legion's ship)
Barry, Conner, Alex (who was sitting due to her leg injury), Mon-El, and Imra were back in the med-bay gathered around Kara, who was still unconscious on the seat. After a moment, much to everyone's relief, Kara opened her eyes as she finally to.
"Oh, my God, Kara," Alex breathed out, getting up as she was using a cane for support. "Hey."
"Welcome back," Barry said, smiling at Kara.
"What happened to Reign? Did you guys beat her?" she asked.
"We came close but she got away," Conner answered, with a sigh.
"Even injecting the concentrated kryptonite directly in her bloodstream wasn't enough to keep her down," Barry said.
"We'll get her next time," Kara said. "If there's one thing we always do, it's defeat the villain in the end."
"With my help, we definitely will defeat her," Conner said.
"Your help? Does that mean you're staying?" Barry asked.
"Well, Cisco's heading back to Earth-1 tomorrow morning, so let's just say that it's my turn to hang around in this universe for a bit," Conner said.
"Having another Kryptonian by our side will really come in handy," Kara said, appreciatively.
"If Cisco, Caitlin, and Wally really need my help with a threat they can't handle without me, then I'll return to Earth-1," Conner said. "Until then, Reign will have a little something extra to deal with."
So Cisco will return to Earth-1 for now and it's Conner's turn to stay on Earth-38, which won't really be a problem since, without DeVoe, not much has happened on Earth-1 aside from the occasional meta-human showing up.
