To Be a Hero

After three days, Midoriya was released from his house arrest and he was more than excited to be back in class. Bakugou still had a day left, so he had to stay back in the dorms to clean by himself. Shiro sat in her seat as people trickled into the classroom. It was like any other day but she had a feeling that something interesting was going to happen today.
"Morning," Aizawa greeted as he trudged into the classroom after the bell. "Now that Midoriya is back, we'll go into more detail about the work studies," he stated before looking over at the door to address someone else, "Please come in."
While everyone waited with bewildered eyes wondering who could be at the door, three individuals walked in. There was a busty girl with voluminous royal blue hair, a built blonde-haired, blue-eyed male, and the last one made Shiro become visibly shocked.
It's the guy from the supermarket way back when... she blinked at his intentionally hunched form and pointy ears. There was no mistake about it. He was the one she helped finding oranges.
"We'll have people who have experienced it first hand tell you about how these are different from the internships," Aizawa finished introducing. "The three third-years at U.A. who stand at the top of all U.A. students—also known as the Big Three."
Shiro continued to gaze at the male with navy hair. I didn't expect him to be a student here, and he was pretty shy the first time we met. But to be one of the top three... What an interesting guy.
"Okay, can you please introduce yourself briefly? Let's start with Amajiki."
Said navy haired male was sweating internally. It wasn't just because there was a room full of people (it was a big part of it), but he was made even more nervous because a set of familiar ruby eyes were practically glued on him. She had recognized him as the one from the supermarket who bought oranges, no doubt. It was too late to shrink and become invisible... He didn't know what to do and when Aizawa called for him to introduce himself, his eyes shot up anxiously.
To everyone else, however, his nervous expression looked more threatening than anything.
"Mirio... Hado-san..." Tamaki was shaking. "I can't do this... Even if I try imagining them as potatoes, only their heads are potatoes, and that girl is an orange... But the rest of their bodies are still human... What should I do? I can't... Say anything..."
Togata Mirio blinked at his best friend and looked at the seated students with an amused look. "Orange?"
"Forget it. My mind's blank..." Tamaki turned his body around abruptly to face the wall. "I want to go home...!"
At his spinelessness, Hado Nejire jumped in and introduced herself as well as Tamaki excitedly. She was a talkative one, so immediately after the introduction she started questioning the other students about anything she found interesting. She had apparently done her homework since she could name off everyone.
"Why are you wearing a mask? Are you sick?" she asked Shoji, but then went to someone else before he could even answer. "You must be Todoroki-kun! How did you get burned right there?"
As a friend who knew the full details of the male's scar and family life, Shiro couldn't help but feel that the girl was prying too insensitively. However, it hadn't seemed to bother Todoroki since he was ready to tell her all about it but was interrupted as the girl jumped to the next.
"Ashido-san, if your horns break off, will new ones grow in? Mineta-kun, are those balls of yours hair? How do you get a haircut? Asui-san, are you a frog? Maybe a tree frog? Aisaka-san, is it true that you are Eraserhead's love child? Can you tell me how that happened? There's so much I want to know about you guys! Isn't it so strange?"
It surprised no one that the state of Shiro's relationship with Aizawa was being questioned; they had been through this before. Aizawa was quickly losing his patience as the girl flitted about with her questions, and Mirio calmed him down by pointing to himself confidently. "Don't worry, Eraserhead! I'm going last to wrap things up, right?" he turned to the students with a bold display much like a certain former hero. "The future's gonna be...?"
Silence. It was dead silent because no one had a clue what he was trying to say.
"Grim! That's what you were s'posed to say, right?" Mirio completed his own sentence unperturbed. "All right, my call-and-response was a huge fail!"
He's a strange one, Shiro concluded as she gave all three of them another once-over. Even though these third-years were known as the Big Three, one would have a hard time coming to that conclusion with how they acted.
"That's okay! You guys look like you're not sure what's going on, right?" Mirio continued on normally. "We're third-years who suddenly appeared to explain about work studies that aren't even required. It's confusing, right? You guys got your provisional licenses as first-years... This year's first-years are really energetic, right? Besides, it looked like my jokes didn't work earlier... I got it! Why don't you all fight me at once?"
"Wh-What?!"
Are we really doing this? Shiro was looking back and forth from the energetic blonde third-year to herself, standing in the middle of Gym Gamma dressed in her gym uniform, and then to Tamaki who was still brooding with his head facing the wall.
She could barely just catch Tamaki saying "Mirio, you probably shouldn't do this" and "end up with kids who can't recover from this" and grew even more bewildered.
"Oh, did you know?" Neijre chirped from besides them, "In the past there was a student who got so frustrated the student quit being a hero, and that caused all sorts of problems. It's tough isn't it, Togata? If you don't think things through properly, this'll be rough. Really rough."
Fighting with Pros and toughing it out through multiple villain attacks, our wills won't be so fragile, Shiro narrowed her eyes and kept them on Mirio now. Kirishima and the others thought the same thing as they stepped up.
"Do we look like such weak small fry to you that you need to worry about us?"
The blonde finished his warm up and nodded at them, "Right, you can come at me anytime, from anywhere. Who's first?"
He's confident, but we can't be too careless either, Shiro assessed while Midoriya surprisingly charged in front. She knew Aizawa was watching carefully, and being trained by him for so long taught her that she should never charge in head first without knowing Mirio's Quirk or some type of backup plan. One look at her classmates and she knew they were dividing themselves up into groups of short, medium, and long range attackers. If he's going to take us all, he'll do it in clusters for the most effect... Would he start from the back? Shiro pulled the ribbons out of her hair and got into position near the middle with her eyes spinning. Well, he'll have to get past us first—!
Before anyone could move, the clothes on Mirio's body fell off and Shiro nearly stumbled on her step while the rest of the class also reacted harshly to the now nude third-year. Despite it, she didn't take her eyes off because she knew her ability could aid the ones in front to land a proper hit on the blonde even if he was sharp enough to dodge while he was attempting to put his pants back on.
"You're full...of openings!" Midoriya's charged leg came in direct contact with Mirio's smiling face, but to everyone's surprise, his leg only phased through.
He can slip through things?! Shiro widened her eyes and then realized like none of Quirks would be able to touch him if he can just allow it to slip through his body. But it wasn't just things that can slip through him, he seemed to be able to warp through things and end up someplace else.
"I'll start with the long-distance fighters!"
Shit, I knew it! Shiro turned her attention behind her when Mirio slipped back out from the ground and took out a bunch of them at the back with swift and powerful punches. She was fortunate in dodging out of the way using her eyes and landed near the front with Ojiro, and she couldn't help but seriously commend Mirio's power that was able to take out half of them in an instant. We have to be able to touch him somehow... And keep him from going into the ground and warping!
"That's it for the long distance fighters," Mirio directed his gaze at the remaining students. "All that's left are the ones who focus on close combat, right?"
"Whether he's applying his 'slipping' power to warp, or applying his warp power to slip through things, he's attacking us directly. So, as long as he goes for the counter, there should be plenty of times when we can touch him!" Midoriya said after he saw the events lay out. "If we can't tell what he's doing, then we should figure out assumptions with what we do know and do whatever we can to find a way to win."
It was a long shot, but Shiro realized something when she was trying to find Mirio the instant he slipped into the ground. On the surface, he had seemingly appeared out of nowhere, but there was a certain direction that he positioned his body in right before he slipped under that allowed the subsequent projection and she was able to catch it with her eyes.
"I know where he will end up after he slips into the ground," she told the others quickly. There wasn't enough time to explain to them how she knows but they all trusted her. "Follow my movements and the second he emerges, we'll attack."
"Got it!"
"Come and try to figure it out!" Mirio smiled while running towards them, and then he slipped under.
Shiro saw his position and signaled the area where the blonde was going to emerge from. Perhaps even faster than her prediction, Midoriya was able to get a basic idea of where she was going to point to. It was right behind him so he was going to take the first counter with them following close behind. When Midoriya went in for another kick, Mirio phased through and performed a diversion by shooting his left arm towards the green haired male's eyes. Instead of hitting him, the arm phased through and that's where the real attack came in from his left fist. Because of Mirio's warp, his pants were off his body, again, so Shiro had to maintain a respectful gaze solely at the upper half of his body as she threw her ribbons towards him to restrain his momentarily solid left arm.
Got him! she immediately pulled with all of her strength so Midoriya could escape. "Now!" she shouted at the others and they all jumped towards the blonde for their attack. To her horror, Mirio was so quick in evading them that he even punched Iida and Kirishima out of the way before slipping slowly into the ground once more. With both of her eyes spinning, Shiro touched the hard rubber ground and forced the property of it to become softer. If he's calculating angles to project his emergence, then making the ground more elastic would cause the projections to skew!
"Hit the ground with your tail as hard as you can, Ojiro-san!" she turned to her friend who caught on to what she was doing right away. With a powerful swing, the males's tail made an impact heavy enough to cause the ground to tremble and bounce like a trampoline.
"Woah, there!"
Mirio's surprised shout popped up from behind her. The benefit of her attack was that the third-year no longer had an upper hand on where he can make himself emerge and allow her classmates more time to counter, but the obvious downside was that it was harder for her to predict where he will come up as well. Mirio's smile was bright as he recovered quickly to throw a punch at Shiro, and she dodged it with her eyes and attempted to leap over him.
"So you figured me out! That's good—oh?"
Shiro didn't have time to register his sudden acknowledging gaze before his knee came up at her torso and sent her flying across the gym. She nearly crashed into Tamaki but the male scooted just a foot to the left to avoid collision while still facing the wall.
He saw that coming? But he wasn't even looking at us... Shiro thought before a pained gasp left her throat and tore her attention back to the blooming pain in her torso. Mirio's power was no joke; a single blow had rendered her out of commission just like the many others on the floor.
"That raw power... Togata-senpai is like an unrivaled beast," she remarked from her position on the ground. Tamaki had heard and while he was still depressed about his poor performance from before he surprised her by answering back.
"It may seem that way to untrained eyes, but if you can't tell how much hard work Mirio has put in, then you won't even be able to retaliate."
"Well, I can tell that much at least. He has to have trained relentlessly to figure out how to control his phasing Quirk and angle his body the right way each time when he goes through walls and the ground, right?" she asked. "Rather than unrivaled... It's more like we have a lot of catching up to do."
Class 1-A has grown so much, but it was still a long way to the top.
"...You'll get there..."
Shiro's eyes landed on the navy haired male with bewilderment. He was still unable to meet her gaze and his form seemed even more rigid because he spoke to her, but the words lingered.
"You were able to see what Mirio did. Even though your counter failed..." Tamaki mumbled into the wall quietly. "His Quirk isn't the thing that's amazing. It's him."
"You really admire him."
"..."
The silence was enough to confirm it.
"Hey!" Nejire skipped up to her friend and grinned when she saw Shiro on the ground. "Togata's gotten stronger, hasn't he?"
"Mirio's been strong ever since we were kids. It's just... He should learn to hold back."
No kidding, Shiro rubbed at her torso absentmindedly as she observed Mirio taking out the rest of her classmates. His mannerism and strength reminded her of the retired Symbol of Peace. If she didn't know better, she'd think that Togata Mirio had been been the one training under All Might. "...I guess you guys aren't going to follow suit on a demonstration?"
"I guess not!" Nejire chuckled and nudged Tamaki on the side teasingly. "Besides, this guy with a heart of a flea wouldn't be able to take it. It's weird though since his ability is super strong!"
"What kind of Quirk do you have, Amajiki-senpai?" Shiro asked with interest. She could see his lips quiver in an obvious display of anxiousness and thus unwilling to talk further. It was a good thing that his classmate and friend loved to talk.
"I know what it is! It's better if you can see it in person, but he can basically manifest anything he eats! Kinda like that one famous quote... From somewhere..."
Shiro blinked, "You are what you eat?"
"Exactly!"
Tamaki only sighed and attempted to draw their attention away from him since it was so uncomfortable. "Mirio's wrapping up. We can leave soon..." he said. True to his words, the blonde was motioning for class 1-A to gather up happily after his rather brutal display of strength.
Nejire was kind enough to give Shiro a hand in pulling her up and went ahead to bother Mirio immediately. The girl truly loved to talk and was bubbly all the time. As Mirio went on to explain his Quirk fully, it proved the theory that Shiro had in her mind right but she was still amazed at how he could accomplish such a thing with absolute control and precision. Next to her, Mina commented on it about being like a glitching video game but it was so much more than that. She realized that Tamaki's admiration for his childhood friend really had a solid foundation; Mirio's Quirk wasn't strong until he made it strong.
"In order to get to the top with this Quirk, I couldn't just stay behind," Mirio stated with determination. When he permeates fully, he can't sense anything. That's why each time he goes through walls or anything similar there were always multiple steps he has to take into account for. "Predictions! I had to think faster than those around me! Sometimes I had to be tricky! Above all, I had to be able to predict what would happen! And what made those predictions possible was experience. I built my predictions on what I knew. It ended up being kind of long, but that's why I wanted to fight you all! I wanted to show you through experience rather than words. In our work studies, we're not guests—we're treated as one of the sidekicks and as pros."
He may be strange, but he's really quite wise, Shiro mused as the blonde continued his heartfelt speech. Everything he said struck a cord with her and she was touched that he put in the extra effort to show them instead of talking. Actions speak louder than words, after all.
Everyone erupted in applause after Mirio was finished and he looked happy that he got his message through. For someone who had started from the bottom and worked all the way to the top with sheer experience, he was neither jaded nor arrogant. He held the meaning that there was always room to learn more, always room to improve.
The ruby eyed girl gazed at the Big Three carefully. She's really learned a lot from Mirio today and hoped that she would be able to see the other two in action sometimes as well. I can't tell much from Hado yet, but she seemed very strong willed, and Amajiki's Quirk... The ability to manifest anything he eats, huh?
Thinking back to the grocery store, she wondered wryly if the bag of oranges he bought some time ago had anything to do with his Quirk. Would it be useful in battle?
"All right, we're going back now," Aizawa cut through everyone's chatting since the class was over. "Say thank you."
"Thank you very much!"
"Hey, was there any point in us being there?" Neijire asked Tamaki after they've left the gym to go back to their next class. Mirio was walking in front of them with a sense of accomplishment and stride. "Do you know?"
"I'm glad I didn't have to do anything..." Tamaki sighed quietly.
"Oh, but you did talk to that girl, Aisaka-san! I saw you."
"..."
"Do you know her? You do, don't you?"
If Tamaki had a hood on him right now, he would be pulling it down to the end of his chin. Of course he recognized Shiro, but that didn't mean he knows her. That time in the grocery store had been a serious blunder on his part and he would rather forget it.
"Speaking of," Mirio grinned while inclining his head back to meet his friends. It was too bad that he was so good at making Tamaki tell him anything, including what actually happened that day when he didn't come back with dried squid. "When she came close after surprising me, I got a whiff of her hair. And guess what? It was oranges!"
The navy haired male visibly tensed up, but Nejire was unaware and amused.
"Oranges? Kind of rare these days. I think most girls go for a flowery scent for shampoo. But what of it? Does that prove Amajiki knows Aisaka-san?"
"There was that time when Tamaki went to the grocery store and came out with oranges solely because—" Mirio paused distractedly when his friend started walking away at a super fast speed due to embarrassment. "Ah wait for us, Tamaki!"
"Hm? Hm?" Neijire blinked when she realized that she wasn't getting anything further. Yet, it quickly left her mind since she had plenty of other questions to ask. "Anyway, Togata! Was there anyone interesting? I wanna know! It's so strange."
The blonde nodded, thinking back to the last attack sequence he encountered that caught him by surprise. There was two. "I defeated them from the back rows. That's my basic combat strategy against opponents... That problem child analyzed my first moves and moved like he predicted what I'd do. Then naturally there's orange girl who was able to do the same but at a much greater extent. She figured out completely how I used Permeation and made the ground all bouncy so that I would shoot off-course."
There was a happy glint in his blue eyes. Problem child and orange girl—Midoriya and Shiro.
"They're both someone Sir would like!"
Inside an abandoned warehouse later that night, Shigaraki and the rest of the League of Villains sat in wait. It was the most annoying part dealin with outsiders; Shigaraki hated waiting. But after the capture of his Master, he had to make sure to take care of everything.
He was told by Mr. Compress that Twice was bringing over a big fish who wanted to talk about things. The big fish being the head of the Shie Hassaikai. What would a yakuza boss want with the League of Villains? Shigaraki wasn't all that interested because he already has a set goal in mind, but since Twice had seemed excited he wold humor the man.
"Hey guys, I've brought him! I'm back!" The metal doors to the storage unit creaked open and Twice led a man with a plague doctor mask inside. "He was a surprisingly good guy after I talked to him. He said he wanted to talk to you. Isn't that disgusting?"
While Twice's split personality was a ridiculously charming part of the villain, Shigaraki couldn't say the same about any part of this yakuza boss. He looked absurd with his mask and surgical glove getup. What is he, a germaphobe?
"What a ridiculous big fish you brought in, Twice," Shigaraki muttered. The man stopped his steps and gave him a hard stare.
"Big fish? That's ironic... League of Villains," Chisaki Kai, or Overhaul, replied wryly.
Magne was unaware of who the man was so Shigaraki explained briefly. She became amused, "Shie Hassaikai? So he's the number two of organized crime? Oh my, I've never seen anything like him! He smells dangerous!"
"Organized crime?" Toga wondered. "How's that any different from us?"
It was Mr. Compress who went on to explain with enthusiasm this time, and it just came down to the fact that after All Might took over as the Symbol of Peace, these organized crime units have phased out under the watchful eyes of the police. "Frankly, they're obsolete and should be a protected species," Mr. Compress chuckled.
It was obvious to the yakuza boss that they were making fun of him, but he didn't make any unneccessary comments to refute it since it was true. It's why he had to reach out to the League of Villains... His plan, of course, was to get them under his rule. After the fall of One For All, there needs to be a new leader. He looked to Shigaraki who claimed to be that new leader; after assessing all that the League of Villains have done under Shigaraki's rule, he knew that there was only one viable choice.
"You need a plan in order to achieve your goal. And I have a plan. I didn't come here today because I wanted to join you. In order to execute my plan, I need a lot of money. There isn't really anyone willing to invest in some obsolete small-time yakuza, but it'd be different if I had you guys, with your increasing name recognition," Overhaul explained calmly after he felt the tension radiating off Shigaraki from his words. "Put yourselves under me. I'll show you how well I can use you. And then, I'll become the next leader."
It was all silent and Shigaraki didn't make a make. "Go home," he simply said. He knew his men and his master. There will be no one else who can claim to be the new leader except himself. All For One trusted him; his men trusted him. There was no need for the yakuza to impose himself in here.
Magne, not being one to let someone take away the freedom that she gained from the band of villains she's become fondly apart of, grabbed her Giant Magnet and attacked Overhaul. "We didn't come together to be under someone, yakuza boy. I'm here because I don't want to be bound by anything! We will decide where we belong!"
"Big Sis Mag...!" Toga shouted with shock while the others watched as Overhaul did something to make Magne explode from the torso up after a single touch. The loss was registered immediately. He killed one of their own.
"You all made the first move. Argh, that's filthy," the yakuza boss got up as blood rained down around the warehouse. He was rubbing at his shoulder like his life depended on it to take away the dirtiness. "That's why I hate stuff like this..."
"This guy's trouble! I'll use my Compress to seal him away!"
Shigaraki reached out, "Wait, Compress!"
After realizing what the yakuza was up to, he knew there were others around. He wouldn't let his men rush in and lose their lives like Magne had. But his warning came a second too late as a shot hit Mr. Compress and then his left arm was obliterated after Overhaul pushed him away. Shigaraki rushed to the front and aimed his own attack, just dodging the tiny capsule that was shot at him by a mere inch and activated his Quirk. Another man jumped in front of Overhaul and his fingers touched him instead, turning him to dust in mere seconds. Shigaraki jumped back as more of Overhaul's men crashed into the building.
"That was close, Overhaul," a hooded man with a similar plague mask said. Despite Twice making sure that he wasn't followed, it seemed that the yakuza's men found them quickly with the work of someone's Quirk. "I missed a shot, but the effects were immediate."
"It'll be hard to make objective decisions like this. Right... It's unproductive to cut down each other's forces, anyway. We're even right now with one corpse on each side, so it's a good time to stop," Overhaul droned and turned his back to leave. He threw his card on the ground next to Shigaraki's feet while the other League of Villains guys got angry enough to want to follow, but they were stopped by Shigaraki. "Let's cool out heads and talk again another day. We'll owe you an arm. It doesn't have to be right away, but the sooner the better. Give me a call once you've calmed down a bit."
As the Shie Hassaikai left, Shigaraki's mind was turning. His people were hurt and it was all because of Overhaul. It was unforgivable. But there was one useful thing out of this meeting... The yakuza was right that he needed to plan.
"You failed again, huh, Tomura? But don't be discouraged. Just try again. Do it over as many times as you need. That is why I am here. It's all for you..."
His master's words rang in his ears clearly. He will lead All For One's plans, his plans, and the plans from everyone in the League of Villains into fruition... As many times as it takes. And as for the Shie Hassaikai?
"I'll demand a lot in repayment for this..."
Shigaraki Tomura, it seems, have grown as well.
"About the hero work studies that are like a more serious verison of the internships, where you go to where Pro Heroes work and help them..." Aizawa announced the next day during homeroom, "We talked about them at our faculty meeting yesterday, and almost all the teachers, including the principal, thought you shouldn't do them."
Shock.
BIG shock.
"Even after we had that big meeting about it?" Kirishima exclaimed dejectedly. He was so excited about it and had been thinking about asking Fourth Kind since it was the weekend tomorrow! Sitting next to the male, Shiro was also feeling down about the news for the same reason.
"But some think we won't be able to raise strong heroes with our current policies, so we came to the decision that first-years will only be allowed to go to agencies with a good track record of accepting work study students."
"So we're still able to go..." Shiro mumbled and thought about her prospects. Gang Orca's agency was more than qualified as a strong and well-known agency, but she knew from the hero mentioning before that he rarely accepted internships because he was always involved with missions. Thus she was unsure if the hero even accepted work studies students. On the other side of her, Bakugou was grinding his teeth because he was bitter that either way he wouldn't be able to join as someone who failed the provisional license exam. Right, I think Gang Orca's going to be leading the supplementary courses for them...
Didn't that mean that her main connection source was gone?
I want to be able to do something...
After classes, she was still thinking about it long and hard. Though she didn't have Gang Orca anymore, she could try asking Aizawa or Present Mic, couldn't she? While they were instructors now, she's known since childhood and it wouldn't hurt to ask even if it felt like cheating the system a little...
Before she reached the staff room, however, Aizawa had found her first. Her ruby eyes lit up and she opened her mouth, "Good timing, Eraserhead!"
"Come with me. I need to talk to you about the hero work studies."
She titled her head and followed behind the hero to an empty lounge room. They sat down and she saw that Aizawa was looking glum. "What's going on? Is it about the possibility that I'll be able to join because someone asked for me?"
"It appears that way. On paper you'll be joining the hero work studies."
Shiro didn't get a chance to feel elated since the wording of this opportunity sounded off. To think of it now, which hero had asked to take her for the program? She was doubtful with Gang Orca's busy schedule that he had gotten around to it unless he already referred someone else. "Eraserhead, what do you mean 'on paper'?"
Aizawa folded his hands together as he sighed. "Seeing that you gained your provisional license, the hero society thought it would benefit to have you work alongside Gran Torino and the detectives on monitoring the League of Villains. Well, more like they'll just be watching you."
Processing the information, Shiro was shocked.
"Wh-What?"
"I didn't agree to this, but it was orders coming from above... Even though the League of Villains are laying low right now, once you get an offer from another agency it would be dangerous to have you out and about even with a capable Pro Hero around. Right now Gran Torino and Detective Tsukauchi is leading the investigation on the League so it's ironically the safest place for you to intern as they wouldn't want to show their faces so soon... And if they do, you can be taken out of the case immediately and they will catch them."
"So I'm just a pawn for the government now?" Shiro furrowed her brows deeply. Aizawa set a hand on her head with a reassuring look.
"I would never allow them to do that to you," he said truthfully. "Even if I have to break orders, I would have if I felt that it they were putting you in danger or that it wasn't the most logical thing to do. Knowing how you are, you wouldn't sit idly and let this work study chance pass by so I gave my trust to Gran Torino to take care of you. Don't worry, you will get valuable experience out of this."
That made Shiro feel much better because she trusted Aizawa completely. It was no doubt hard for him to agree to this as her legal guardian, but to be in the center of the investigation on Shigaraki was perhaps just what she needed to get closer to her goal. With determined eyes, she nodded.
"I accept."
How was that for a twist in what Shiro will be doing during the hero work studies period? I was so excited to finally officially introduce the Big Three, too! Tamaki is baby c: I hope this chapter was enjoyable, and as always, leave a review for little ol' me if you can!
Until next time :)
