"Okay, you know the plan. Move out." Kanan ordered "No troopers. Security's soft." He said into his comm.
"Good luck, Master." Alisria said softly, and she ran off after Sabine.
Present
Unknown to them they were being pulled on board an Imperial Star Destroyer. Sabine and Alisria ran around the corner towards the engine room. There Sabine set to work, placing explosives around the consoles. Alisria stood guard.
Chopper beeped nervously.
"Chopper, stop grumbling and work that gravity generator." Sabine ordered the droid.
Chopper chirped a reply.
"How's it coming?" Alisria asked.
"I've got the backup ready." Sabine confirmed.
"Well, what are you waiting for?"
"Now!"
Sabine hit the button and the gravity was turned off.
"Artificial gravity is down for two minutes." Sabine reported.
"Good work, put the rest of those detonators down and let's get out of here." Alisria smiled.
Sabine placed the remaining bombs and the two girls grabbed onto Chopper, letting him fly them out. They reached the docking bay quickly and Sabine pulled out the remote detonator.
"Five, four...Get ready. Two, one...Now!" Gravity turned back on making them all fall to the floor.
Kanan, Zeb, and Ezra came running up to them. What was Ezra doing on this op?
"Where are the Wookiees?" Sabine asked.
"No Wookiees!" Kanan shouted "Sabine, man the nose gun! Chop, tell Hera to take off! Ria, stay close!"
"Uh, right!" Sabine dashed for the nose gun.
They all followed her towards the ship but Ezra, who was last, was grabbed by Agent Kallus.
"Let go!" Ezra grunted.
"Kid, get out of the way!" Zeb hollered, pointing his weapon at the guards.
"I'm trying!"
"Sorry, kid!" Zeb shouted and closed the door "You did good."
"There! Airlock shut!" Hera exclaimed, detaching from the other ship "We're out of here! Chop, jam their tractor beam! Sabine."
Sabine pressed the detonator and the ship they'd so recently been docked with blew up.
"Ugh, I can't see it from here. How'd it look?" Sabine asked.
"Coolest explosion yet." Alisria assured her.
"As always." Kanan agreed.
They made the jump to hyperspace and Kanan led Alisria and Sabine into the cockpit.
"The whole thing was a setup." He sighed.
"You think Vizago was in on it?" Sabine questioned.
"He'd sell his mother to Jawas for a couple credits." Hera pointed out "But we're a source of income for him. Even odds he didn't know."
Zeb came in.
"The kid did alright." Hera smiled.
"He did okay." Kanan admitted reluctantly "Where is he?"
"I, uh, thought he was with you." Zeb said, clearly lying.
"Zeb," Alisria asked "What did you do to him?"
"I didn't do anything to him. But that ISB Agent grabbed him." Zeb protested.
"What?" Everyone shouted.
"The kid got grabbed, okay?" Zeb finally told them.
"Garazeb Orrellios!" Hera chided.
"Oh, come on!" Zeb growled "We were dumping him after this mission anyway! This saves us fuel. They'll go easy on him. He's just a kid."
"We're gonna go get him, right, Hera?" Alisria asked "It is our fault he got captured."
"No! No, no! No way!" Zeb protested "You cannot be serious!"
"Alisria is right, it's our fault he was there!" Hera shouted.
"Come on, Hera! We just met this kid! We're not going back for him!" Zeb growled.
"They'll be waiting for us." Sabine agreed sadly "We can't save him."
Chopper chipped his argument.
"What? What did he say?" Zeb asked.
"He voted with us." Alisria smirked.
"That's three against two." Hera smiled "Kanan, what's your vote?"
Kanan sighed and shut his eyes "Let's do it."
They made their way back to the Star Destroyer Ezra was on and landed in the lower hanger.
"Find Ezra, I'll be ready." Hera ordered, she would wait and defend the ship while the rest of them found Ezra.
Sabine paused to spray their calling card on the floor.
"Hold this bay 'till we get back." Kanan commanded Zeb.
"And this time, try not to leave until everyone's back aboard." Sabine teased.
"That was not my fault!" Zeb called after them as they ran down the hallway.
"Well, that's debatable." Ezra's voice came from above.
He jumped out of the vents wearing a cadets helmet. Zeb punched him in the face, knocking him over.
"Zeb!" Alisria scolded.
"First you ditch me, then you hit me?" Ezra asked, accepting Alisria's offered hand to get up.
"How was I supposed to know it was you?" Zeb argued "You were wearing a bucket!"
Agent Kallus and two stormtroopers came around the corner. Ezra threw his helmet at them and they all turned to run.
"Spectre-1 to Ghost, we're leaving." Kanan called into his comm.
They dashed towards their ship, firing shots over their shoulders. Ezra stopped on the ramp to fire a shot but Zeb grabbed his shoulder.
"Oh, no, this time, you board first." Zeb dragged Ezra inside.
"Ghost, raise the ramp!" Kanan shouted.
Quickly, Hera shut the ramp and Alisria and Kanan gave Sabine the signal. She pressed the detonator for her artwork, making the paint explode and blowing a hole in the enemy ship. Hera got them out and jumped to hyperspace.
As Ezra came into the cockpit, Hera sat back and sighed "Welcome aboard. Again."
"Thanks. Thank you." Ezra rubbed the back of his head awkwardly "I really didn't think you'd come back for me."
"I'll get you home now." Hera told him "I'm sure your parents must be worried sick."
Ezra looked gloomy "I don't have parents. And you've got somewhere else to be."
Kanan, Sabine, and Alisria came around the corner.
"Where?" Alisria asked.
"I know where they're really taking the Wookiees." Ezra declared "Have your heard of the spice mines of Kessel?"
Everyone froze, Sabine's mouth dropped open and Alisria bit her lip.
"Slaves sent there last a few months, maybe a year." Sabine explained to Ezra.
"And for Wookiees born in the forest, it's a death sentence." Hera agreed.
"Then I guess we'd better go save 'em." Ezra grinned.
"We?" Sabine asked.
"I've come this far." Ezra pointed out "Might as well finish the job."
"Setting course for Kessel." Hera turned to her controls.
"Ria?" Kanan asked, noticing how quiet she'd gotten "You okay?"
"Fine." Alisria got up "I-I'll be fine." She went to her room
"What's up with her?" Ezra asked.
"It was her first real mission with us. She went undercover in the Kessel spice mines. It ended badly." Hera murmured "Kanan, go to her. She needs you now."
"Yeah, I'm going." Kanan got up and hurried out.
He reached Alisria and Sabine's room but hesitated before knocking.
"You can come in." Alisria said, before he even touched the door.
Kanan opened the door "Hey," He sat down next to her "You know, you don't have to come with us. It's okay if you don't."
"No, I have to go." Alisria shook her head "I need to face my fear. After all, fear is the path to the dark side."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, I have to do this."
"Okay, but remember, we're with you every step of the way." Kanan reminded his first padawan.
"How could I forget?" Alisria smiled slightly.
Wookiee prisoners were being led in a group off the ship they'd come in. Hera flew them in closer and shined a light at the stormtroopers. Quickly two shots were fired, blasting the soldiers out of the way. The Wookiee's grunted happily.
As Hera circled around for another pass, Alisria stood next to Kanan, Sabine, Zeb, and Ezra in the cargo bay.
"Try not to get dead." Zeb teased the newest member of their crew "Don't want to carry your body out."
Ezra suddenly looked nervous and Alisria glared at Zeb and put her hand on Ezra's shoulder "You'll be fine, just follow the plan."
The bay door opened and they rushed out, Kanan, Sabine, and Alisria firing their blasters at the stormtroopers. They hid behind some crates and Kanan nodded at Alisria and Ezra. Together they ducked around the side of the crate and snuck around the troopers to the Wookiees. The Wookiees growled at them.
"Hey, hey, we're here to help!" Ezra said quickly.
He and Alisria pulled out their tools and got to work freeing the Wookiee prisoners. Once they were all free one of the Wookiees grabbed a stormtrooper by his helmet and threw him across the area. The others soon followed suit. When all the stormtroopers were taken care of, the Wookiees parted and revealed a grinning Ezra and Alisria.
They stood proudly for a moment before they heard the whooshing of TIE fighters closing in.
The ships started firing at the Ghost and Hera shouted "We're hit! Chopper! Aft gun!"
The Ghost fired several shots at the TIE-fighters and destroyed one, but there were plenty to take its place. A larger ship rose up and fired at the Wookiees and the crew, making them all dive out of the way.
The bigger ship landed and a platform dropped down, revealing Agent Kallus and a whole lot of stormtroopers.
"Take them down!" Kallus shouted.
As the shots began too fire, Alisria noticed a young Wookiee scamper off away from them, he was still in his bonds, how had they missed him? Two stormtroopers stopped what must have been the small Wookiee's father and shot him in the shoulder as the young one crawled away. She, Ezra, and Zeb knelt down next to the adult Wookiee.
"He'll be okay. I've got him." Zeb assured them as he lifted the Wookiee onto his shoulders and carried him away.
Before Alisria could go after the Wookiee, Ezra grabbed her arm and pulled her back behind the crates.
"I can't maintain position!" Hera called into the comms.
"Go! Lead the TIEs away and give yourself maneuvering room!" Kanan ordered.
"I am not leaving you behind!"
"No, you're not. We're running a twenty-two pickup." Kanan told her.
"Seriously?" Sabine asked.
"You have a better option?" Kanan and Alisria asked together.
"Jump into the pit and get it over with?" Zeb suggested.
"Alright, I'll be back. Make sure you're ready." Hera warned.
"Twenty-two pick up?" Ezra questioned "Care to let me in on the secret?"
"Kid, we're about to let everyone in on the secret." Kanan said, looking at Alisria "You ready, Ria?"
"Ready as I'll ever be." Alisria sighed.
Together they stood up on top of the crates. They began to walk towards the still firing stormtroopers, easily dodging the shots. Kanan pulled out his lightsaber parts and hooked them together. Alisria did the same. They ignited their sabers and pointed them at the troops before them.
The stormtroopers looked confused and began to lower their weapons.
"All troopers, focus your fire on...on the Jedi's." Agent Kallus' voice rang across the battlefield.
The stormtroopers began to shoot again, Kanan and Alisria blocked every shot that came their way.
"Time to go!" Kanan shouted over his shoulder.
"Right." Zeb agreed "Everyone, into the container!"
Alisria glanced back and noticed that Ezra wasn't following the Wookiees and Zeb into the box. He started to run in the opposite direction! What was he thinking? Then Alisria remembered the Wookiee child from before, he must be going after it, she realized.
"Kanan, I've got a quick errand to run, think you can handle them without me?" She called to her Master.
"Be quick!" Kanan warned.
Alisria dodged and weaved between blasts and around the corner. She followed Ezra. Soon they were on a long, raised platform. The Wookiee yelped, as he ran away from the stormtrooper following him.
"Hey!" Ezra shouted, getting the trooper's attention.
The stormtrooper spun around and fired a shot at Ezra who was now crouched on the ground. Ezra avoided the blast by jumping over the stormtrooper's head and landing next to the Wookiee child. Alisria raised her lightsaber and prepared to help, but Ezra fired a few energy blasts from his weapon and the stormtrooper got so disoriented he fell over the edge of the platform.
"Gotcha!" Ezra exclaimed.
Alisria ran up towards him and the Wookiee, and reached them just as Ezra got the cuffs off the small Wookiee.
"It's over for you, Jedi!" The ISB Agent's voice rang out across the platform "A Master and an apprentice. Such a rare find these days."
"I don't know where you get your delusions, buckethead!" Ezra shouted, unafraid of the blaster the Imperial was pointing at them "I work alone."
"Not this time." Kanan rose, standing on top of the Ghost, lightsaber lit.
"This time you have us." Alrisria agreed.
The ISB Agent started to fire blasts, alternating between Kanan and Alisria. The two Jedi dodged and weaved, avoiding the shots and finally, Kanan deflected one back at the Agent, knocking him off the platform.
"Jump, kids!" He shouted as the ship started to move.
Ezra and Alisria shared a look and leapt off the platform's edge, the Wookiee child following them. Kanan caught them quickly as they fell and pulled them to safety within the ship. They made their way to the cargo bay where Hera, Sabine, Zeb, and the Wookiees were waiting. They fell silent as the two Jedi, the street-rat, and the Wookiee they'd rescued came in.
They adult Wookiee, who must have been the child's parent grunted happily as his child growled in excitement and slid down the ladder to rush into his arms. Hera and Sabine grinned at the touching reunion, even Zeb cracked a smile. Kanan placed a hand on both Ezra and Alisria's shoulders for a moment before he moved away.
They had arranged for a ship to take the Wookiees to safety, Alisria and Kanan walked down towards the airlock to see the Wookiees off.
The Wookiee in charge grunted and Sabine translated "Um, he says if we ever need help, the Wookiees will be there."
The Wookiee reached out and ruffled Ezra and Alirsia's hair gently.
"Good luck, Kitwarr." Ezra smiled at the child he and Alirsia had saved "Try to stay out of trouble."
The Wookiees waved and departed.
"Ha. Look who's talking." Zeb teased and went to shut the airlock.
"So I guess you drop me off next?" Ezra asked.
"Uh, yeah." Zeb nodded and cleared his throat "Finally, right?"
Ezra simply turned around and muttered "Right."
He walked off, Sabine and Zeb following. Kanan and Alisria stayed below.
"What are you thinking, Ria?" Kanan asked.
"I'm thinking," Alisria paused "That you should do it."
"What?"
"Take him on, train him. You trained me and I'm at your level now, there's not much more you can teach me. It's time for you to take another apprentice."
"But-"
"I know you're nervous, but I'll help if you want. I can sit in on lessons and stuff." Alisria offered "You can feel his force signature, it's strong. He needs you, Kanan. Without a proper teacher, like you, he could get into a lot more trouble."
"Ugh, why do you always have to be right?" Kanan smirked, groaning teasingly.
"Because I'm always right."
They walked back towards the cockpit and saw Ezra leaning against the ladder. The ship jerked as the Wookiee's get away ship disconnected and Ezra jolted, bumping into Kanan then Alisria.
"Oh, uh, sorry." He apologized quickly.
Alisria smiled and she and Kanan continued on their way to the cockpit. Of course they knew he'd swiped Kanan's lightsaber, but it was another part of the test.
It wasn't long before they landed on Lothal. Ezra climbed down the ladder and walked over to Zeb and Alisria.
"So, uh, see you around?" He sighed.
"Not if we see you first." Zeb joked and punched Ezra's shoulder.
"Don't worry, you won't." Ezra grumbled, rubbing his sore shoulder.
He walked down the slanted exit to where Kanan and Hera were waiting. Alisria followed him.
"I think you have something that belongs to me." Kanan frowned.
Sheepishly, Ezra pulled out Kanan's holocron and tossed it to him "Good luck saving the galaxy."
Alisria came up behind her master and Hera, she noticed the holocron had been opened.
"He opened it. He passed the test." Hera smiled.
The two Jedi looked out over the grassy field to the boy who was running towards a tall tower. He just might be something special. Kanan looked to his old apprentice and Alisria nodded.
"Go." She smiled.
Kanan followed Ezra to the tower and, as he reached the top, he saw Ezra holding his lightsaber.
Seeming to sense Kanan's presence, Ezra asked "What's the Force?"
"The Force is everywhere. It surrounds us and penetrates us. It binds the galaxy together. And it's strong with you, Ezra." Kanan explained "Otherwise you'd never have been able to open the holocron."
Ezra turned around "So, what do you want?"
"To offer you a choice. You can keep the lightsaber you stole, let it become just another dusty souvenir." Kanan paused "Or you can give it back and come with us, come with me and be trained in the ways of the Force. You can learn what it truly means to be a Jedi."
"I thought the Empire wiped out all the Jedi."
"Not all of us." Kanan shook his head.
Ezra looked at the lightsaber in his hands then out the window at the world he could finally see more of, the galaxy, the universe. He looked back at Kanan.
