Droids in Distress
I don't own Star Wars Rebels!
The Ghost crew was in trouble, again. Hera flew the ship away from the incoming TIE-fighters, dodging the blasts that came at them.
"I don't have a shot!" Kanan shouted from the gun turret.
"Chopper, do you have the coordinates?" Hera called to the droid.
Chopper beeped a reply.
"What did he say?" Zeb asked.
"He said 'Hello Hyperspace.'" Hera joked.
"That's not what he said." Zeb grumbled.
"You get the point!" Alisria shouted.
The ship entered hyperspace and everyone breathed a collective sigh of relief.
"Told you we'd get away." Kanan smiled as he joined the rest of the crew in the cockpit.
"With the shipment." Sabine corrected "You said we'd get away with the shipment."
"And in case you didn't notice, we don't have the shipment." Alisria groaned.
"Kanan, we're low on everything." Hera reminded him.
"Food." Ezra supplied.
"Explosives." Sabine added.
"Fuel." Hera crossed her arms.
"Everything." Alisria agreed.
"We need to make some money or we might as well put the Ghost in storage." Hera sighed.
"There's always Vizago's job." Kanan suggested nervously.
"So we're arms dealers again?" Zeb grumbled.
"Mm, more like arms redistributors." Kanan shrugged.
"Come on." Zeb growled "We don't even know what kind of weapons we're talking about here."
"Hey, if it puts food on the table-" Ezra began.
"And in your belly." Alisria rolled her eyes.
"Whatever. If it puts food on the table and frees up some time for, oh, I don't know, Jedi training, then I'm in." Ezra ignored the comment and the sniggers from Zeb and Sabine.
Kanan pushed the boy's head back so he was sitting in his seat again and turned to Hera "You game?"
"Say I am. What then?"
"I already know the mission." Kanan grinned "Let's head to the spaceport."
The crew had landed at Lothal's spaceport and were walking down the hall to the shuttle they would take for the job.
"Now boarding Star-Commuter Shuttle ST-45 bound for Garel." The announcer's voice came over the system.
Chopper spun and beeped loudly.
"How rude." Zeb muttered as he and Sabine sat down in the second row.
Ezra thumped Chopper's head, hard before taking his seat across from the Lasat. Kanan and Alisria sat down in the row behind him. Minister Tua boarded the shuttle with the trader providing the weapons the crew was trying to steal.
"This way, Mr. Wabo." She said, leading him to the row in front of Zeb and Sabine "We have seats in the front." Mr. Wabo said something in his native language and the minister sighed "Where is that translator?"
A golden droid hurried onto the shuttle followed by an astromech "Coming, Minister. Come along R2."
The astromech beeped in response.
"Final call for Star-Commuter Shuttle ST-45, bound for Garel."
"Sentients, please prepare for takeoff." The droid pilot said.
The ship lifted off and flew up into space before entering hyperspace. Chopper started to poke Ezra's shoulder repeatedly.
Mr. Wabo said something else and Minister Tua looked to the protocol droid for a translation "Mr. Amda Wabo is most honored that you are joining him on Garel, Minister Tua. And, uh, if I might add a personal note-"
"Will you cut it out!" Ezra finally shouted at Chopper "You have plenty of room! Stop crowding me!"
Chopper shoved Ezra and shocked him viciously.
"Kid, how 'bout you get that rust bucket under control?" Kanan growled, standing up.
Chopper made to zap Kanan.
"Watch it, droid!" Alisria snarled.
"Mind your own business!" Ezra hollered and Chopper shocked him again.
"Hey, pilot. Isn't there some rule against droids in the passengers area?" Kanan shouted.
The pilot droid sighed "I am sorry, sir. Your astromech must proceed to the back of the craft."
"Hey if my astromech's banished, then those two astromechs are banished too." Ezra protested.
"Astromech? Me?" The protocol droid scoffed "I have never been so insulted. I'll have you know that I am a protocol droid fluent in over six million forms-"
Minister Tua interrupted "Pilot, these two droids are with me and I am on Imperial business."
"Sorry, ma'am, but these are Imperial regulations."
"But, Minister-" The protocol droid tried two insist.
"I can't risk an incident spoiling these negotiations. Go!" Minister Tua ordered.
"Oh, this is so humiliating." The protocol droid grumbled "Trust an astromech to ruin everything."
The astromech he was with chirped.
"Secret mission? What secret mission?" The protocol droid asked as they made their way to the back of the shuttle.
Wabo said something else and Minister Tua winced "I'm sorry, Mr. Wabo, I-I don't understand you."
"Hello. Excuse me." Zeb leaned forward "I couldn't help noticing your predicament. If it's of any help, my ward here is quite fluent."
Sabine smiled politely "Oh, I would never presume. Though it would be good practice for my level five exams at the Imperial Academy. No, no. But I couldn't."
"You're a level five academy student?" Minister Tua sounded impressed "I was too, once upon a time."
From the back of the shuttle, Alisria heard the protocol droid complain "That young creature can't possibly take the place of a fully programmed protocol droid such as I. The odds of our mission becoming a complete debacle-"
The astromech he was with chirped loudly and ran into him.
"Don't you shush me!" The golden droid raged "It hardly matters to you what they're saying."
Chopper rammed into the R2 unit astromech and the two beeped loudly.
"Well, thank you." The protocol droid patted Chopper's head "There. You see, R2? Here is an astromech who understands etiquette. You could learn a lot from this old C1-10P."
Alisria stifled a giggle and turned her attention back to the front where Minister Tua asked Sabine "Now, please ask Mr. Wabo where the shipment is being held."
Sabine nodded and asked the question. Mr. Wabo answered quickly.
"He said Bay 17." Sabine grinned.
"Sentients," The pilot called "We are approaching Garel. Please prepare for landing."
Alisria smiled at Kanan. It wasn't long before they exited hyperspace and landed at Garel's spaceport.
As they exited the craft, Minister Tua said to Sabine "My dear, you did great service to your Empire today. Now focus on those level fives."
"Oh, I will, Minister. It's been such an honor." Sabine lied "Thank you."
Zeb came out behind her and gently pushed her shoulder, to stop the painful playacting. Sabine sent him a dirty look over her shoulder.
Kanan and Alisria hurried to the meeting spot as quickly as they could without arousing suspicion.
They paused as they passed Sabine and heard her whisper "Bay seven."
Ezra had clearly heard it too and was sneaking up the wall to the vent. Alisria followed her master towards Bay seven.
"Kanan, I thought you were gonna teach me Jedi stuff." Ezra complained over the comms "So far all I'm doing is thieving and I already knew how to do that."
"Just get to Bay seven, open the door, and we all get paid." Kanan rolled his eyes.
"He's got a point, Master." Alisria nudged him, turning off her own comm "You did say you were going to teach him."
"And I will." Kanan insisted, doing the same with his comm "I just, I don't know, need a little time to get used to having a padawan again."
"Well, I'd get used to it quick." Alisria sighed "Or I don't know how long the kid's gonna hang around for."
"So we steal to stay alive. See? I told you I already knew this." Ezra was grumbling.
After a few minutes of thudding and more incoherent mumbles from Ezra he said "Okay. I'm in Bay seven."
The team was outside the door when Ezra opened it.
Zeb clapped slowly "Well, kid, you pulled it off."
"Was there ever any doubt?"
"Yes." Kanan, Zeb, and Sabine all said.
Alisria smacked her master and the Lasat's arms scoldingly.
"Almost there." Hera said over the com "Do we know what exactly Vizago has us stealing yet?"
Zeb opened a crate and stumbled back with a loud gasp "Karabast." He muttered.
"Zeb, what is it? What's wro-? Oh!" Alisria looked into the crate and saw what had upset their crew mate.
"Whoa. They're T-7 ion disruptors." Sabine said in awe "These were banned by the Senate. You can short circuit an entire ship with these."
"That's not why they were banned." Zeb growled, low in the back of his throat.
Kanan grabbed the lid of the crate from Sabine and quickly put it back on "Get 'em aboard before company comes."
Chopper beeped a warning over the comm, apparently, Minister Tua had discovered they were in the wrong bay.
"Well, stall them." Hera ordered.
Chopper chirped loudly.
Kanan shouted "Hurry, we're running out of-!"
"Times up!" Ezra cried "We're busted."
He and Alisria spotted a squadron of troops running towards them.
"Hands up." The lead stormtrooper ordered as they all pointed their blasters at Zeb, Ezra, and Alisria.
Zeb and Alisria calmly put their hands up and moved forward.
"What are you doing?" Ezra hissed.
"There a problem here?" Zeb asked politely.
Mr. Wabo said something and the protocol droid translated "Amda Wabo says those crates contain his disruptors."
"I'm sorry, there must be some mistake." Alisria smiled brilliantly "There can't possible be disruptors in there, because they're illegal, right?"
"That's irrelevant. We're going to search your crates." Minister Tua commanded.
"Be my guest." Zeb gestured to the crate Ezra had been pushing.
"Forward." One of the stormtroopers ordered.
Two of the men stepped forward, blasters still pointed at the crew.
As they passed Zeb, he smiled sinisterly "On second thought-" He grabbed the two soldiers by the back of their armor and tossed them back at the remaining squad.
Each soldier knocked down at least four of their fellow men, leaving only the leader standing. Zeb charged towards him, as the commander fired blast after blast at him.
Alisria sighed and shoved Ezra back towards the crate "Get moving, kid! Come on!"
More shots came their way as Zeb threw the commander into the ceiling and the soldiers regained their footing. Zeb took out three with his bare hands before he growled and pulled out his bo-rifle.
"You want disruptors, you gotta come through me!" He snarled "Never again! You're trying to shoot me? You missed!"
Alisria noticed that Ezra was not moving and was hiding behind the crates. She rolled her eyes. Kanan ran out, dodging blasts, and ducked down beside Ezra.
"Get those crates aboard ship, now!" He commanded.
"Uh, right." Ezra stammered.
Mr. Wabo and Minister Tua were hidden behind a column, but Wabo gave their position away when he shouted loudly in his native language.
"Will you please stop talking!" Tua screamed.
Alisria ducked another blast as she kept Zeb close in her sights. She knew he would act rashly, he was upset to see the disruptors that had been a part of the massacre of his people. Zeb acted tough, but inside he still grieved for his home and his people.
Ezra pushed the crate up onto the ship with Sabine's help and Alisria glanced over to make sure they were safely inside. Oddly, she spotted the protocol droid and the astromech from the shuttle following Chopper as he rolled up the ramp.
"If that droid picked up those two on purpose, I might just scream." Alsiria muttered.
"Spectre- 4, Spectr-3, time to go!" Kanan called over the blaster fire.
Zeb didn't seem to hear him as he continued to pummel a stormtrooper.
"Zeb! Time to leave!" Alisria grabbed his arm.
Zeb looked around and seemed to come back to reality "Right." He muttered, dropping the stormtrooper.
Zeb, Kanan, and Alisria ran for the ramp at breakneck speed. Zeb, with his long legs was in the lead.
"Spectre-1 to Ghost." Kanan called into his comm "We're good to go."
"Going." Hera said.
Kanan did a flying leap into the ship and landed on top of his old student.
"Ouch! Kanan!" Alisria complained.
"Sorry, Ria."
They got up and went into the supply bay.
"Oh, look, Chopper made friends." Sabine rolled her eyes.
"I am C-3PO and this is my counterpart, R2-D2." The protocol droid introduced "I was translating for Minister Tua when we were attacked by thieves like, uh, you."
He gasped as Zeb, Kanan, and Alsiria climbed up into the bay. Zeb didn't say anything, he climbed up the ladder, staying as far away from the crate of disruptor as he could be while keeping them in his sight.
"We have company. Imperial droids." Kanan said "Spectre-5, let's get a couple restraining bolts on these two."
"Yep. On it." Sabine nodded.
"Spectre-6, keep an eye on 'em."
"Right, that'll happen." Ezra joked.
"Excuse me, sir, but this is a terrible mistake." The protocol droid, C-3PO, said "My partner and I are in service of Minister Tua of Lothal-"
Kanan and Alisria reached the top of the ladder and made to head down to the cockpit, but Zeb held out a hand "Kanan, Ria. A word?"
"Can it wait?" Kanan asked distractedly "If I don't confirm our rendezvous with Vizago, we'll have done all this for nothing."
"Yeah. About that..." Zeb rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly "Maybe this time, we don't sell to Vizago, eh? Maybe we get those disruptors out of circulation instead."
Sabine climbed down the ladder from above "Least we got 'em out of Imperial circulation. When I was translating, I found out they were shipping those T-7s as prototypes so the Empire could mass produce them on Lothal."
"See, Zeb? Perfect crime." Kanan tried to convince their Last crew mate, slinging an arm around his shoulders "We steal weapons meant for the Empire and sell them for credits we desperately need to keep this bird flying."
"Oh, hey. If we need credits, maybe Vizago will buy those two droids." Sabine offered.
"Yeah. Good idea." Kanan agreed and climbed up the ladder.
"If it means anything, Zeb, I don't think we should sell the T-7s to Vizago either." Alisria whispered "We don't know who his buyer is for them. We don't know what they plan to do with them. You know first-hand the kind of destruction they can cause, I think getting them out of circulation completely is the smartest idea. But we both know Kanan won't go for that and he's right about us needing the credits."
"So what do you suggest we do?" Zeb grumbled "It doesn't sound like we have many options."
"We don't." Alisria nodded "But, if I can get Hera on our side, we might be able to get those disruptors in the hands of one of the rebellions against the Empire."
Zeb's brow furrowed "Is that better though?"
"Not really." Alisria conceded "There's always the possibility that they'll still be used for bad things or by bad people. But maybe we can get lucky and they'll be used to fight the Empire. It's not our best option, but it's a chance."
Zeb looked away "It's not a bad idea, I'll admit. But what are the odds we get lucky?"
"When are our odds ever good?" Alisria countered.
Zeb cracked a small smile.
Alisria was walking down the hall of the Ghost when the door to Zeb and Ezra's room slid open and Ezra was forcefully shoved out, toppling over and landing heavily on the ground.
"And stay out!" Zeb roared.
"You can't do that!" Ezra started pounding on the now closed door "It's my cabin too."
"Ezra? Come in here." Hera called.
Ezra growled and kicked the door one more time. Alisria continued on her way, heading to the cockpit after Ezra.
"Hera, Zeb's booted me from my own-" Ezra began to complain.
Hera cut him off "I know, but maybe you could cut Zeb a little slack today."
"Oh, the way he cuts me slack?" Ezra argued.
"Ezra, do you know what a T-7 disruptor is, what it does to an organic being?" Alisria asked.
"Uh, no." Ezra shook his head.
"Well, Zeb knows." Hera sighed and motioned for Ezra to sit, which he did "Because it's what the Imperials used on his people when they cleared his home world."
"Very few Lasats survived." Alisria explained "And none remain on Lasan."
Ezra sat back and ran a hand over his face "I...I guess I could cut him a little slack."
"Good man." Hera nodded "So, how's the Jedi training going with Kanan?"
"Jedi training? Never heard of it."
"We'll see about that." Hera grumbled, irritated with the Jedi teacher.
They exited hyperspace and Lothal came into view.
"Home, sweet home." Ezra muttered.
They entered the atmosphere and flew towards Vizago's camp.
Alisria and Hera had found Kanan in his cabin and were quite forcefully encouraging him to start Ezra's training as they made their way to the cargo bay.
"Can we discuss this later?" Kanan groaned.
"That's fine, love. But we will discuss it." Hera crossed her arms.
"No getting out of it." Alisria agreed.
The R2 unit rolled forward and beeped insistently.
"Oh, right." Sabine scoffed "This R2 says its real mission was to make sure the T-7s never reached the Empire, and that his master will pay handsomely for their return."
Kanan rubbed his chin thoughtfully "I'll think about it."
Zeb's face twisted "So, we're not selling the droids but we're selling the T-7s? We don't even know who Vizago's buyer is."
"We know it's not the Empire" Kanan shrugged "And I already made a deal with Vizago."
"There are other bad people out there besides the Empire though." Alisria pointed out.
"Let's get these crates off the boat." Kanan said, but Alisria could see her statement had an effect on him.
Sabine, Kanan, Hera, and Ezra started to unload the crates, Zeb was glaring at the boxes venomously and Alisria was at his side. When they were all off the ship Kanan led the way into Vizago's camp, Zeb and Alisria still slightly behind.
Vizago opened a crate and lifted a disruptor to inspect it "Oh. I can make some beautiful music with these."
"They're not that kind of instruments!" Zeb snarled.
"Ah. You just have to know how to play them." Vizago waved off the Lasat "And how to play those who want to buy them."
"You have to buy them from us first." Ezra reminded Vizago from beside the speeder.
"Finally." Vizago threw up his hands "Someone on your crew who understands business."
"Let's just get this over with." Kanan said, pushing Vizago's arm away from him.
Alisria's ears perked up as she heard a starship approach, she looked over Vizago's shoulder and saw an Imperial ship zooming towards them.
"We got incoming!" She called.
"What is this?" Vizago had noticed the incoming ship as well "You were followed!"
"That's not possible." Hera protested.
"Tell it to the Empire!" Vizago ran over to his speeder "Leave the rest. We're gone!"
He and his crew started to load up but Kanan grabbed his arm "You haven't paid us."
"Cikatro Vizago doesn't pay for half a shipment." Vizago climbed onto the speeder "And he doesn't pay for trouble with Imperials. My friends, I hope you live to bargain another day. And if you don't...Eh."
Vizago and his crew sped away, taking half the T-7s with them.
"Shouldn't we be going too?" Sabine asked.
"We can't let these disruptors fall into Imperial hands." Kanan glanced back at the Mandalorian girl "Sabine, destroy the guns."
"Ha. Now you're speaking my language. I'll go get my gear." Sabine cheered.
She paused as she passed the R2 unit as it rolled down the ramp, the protocol droid hurrying in it's wake shouting "R2-D2, stop! What are you doing?"
The astromech beeped a response.
"Joining the crew?"
R2-D2 lifted one of the guns and chirped a suggestion to Sabine.
"Of course. Overload the disruptors and boom!" Sabine pulled off her helmet "Good call, little guy. You can join our crew anytime."
"Well, short my circuits." C-3PO grumbled to Chopper who was next to him.
Kanan ran towards the crates "Hera, Alisria, help Sabine open the crates. Zeb, Ezra, line 'em, up." He grabbed a T-7 "Meanwhile, I'll deal with the walkers."
The two walkers landed and began to walk towards them, firing shots with every step. Kanan took a shot at one of them and it stumbled as bright lights began to flash before it crashed to the ground. Kanan raised the disruptor to fire at the second walker but it fired at him first. A large explosion sent Kanan flying backwards and the disrupter soaring out of his grip.
Hera ran behind a rock and fired on the walker with her, much smaller, blaster which didn't do much other than make the machine turn to her position and start firing making her zig-zag for cover.
Meanwhile Zeb and Alisria hauled Kanan to his feet and the crew of The Ghost ducked behind a large rock as stormtroopers and ISB Agent Kallus exited the ship.
"Advance and fire." Agent Kallus ordered.
C-3PO, the foolish droid, saw the advancing squadron and hurried forward "Thank you. Thank you. I knew some form of rescue would arrive. I told R2 but he thinks so ill of stormtroopers."
The troopers began to fire on the droid.
"Wait! Don't shoot! Don't shoot!" C-3PO cried in a panic and shuffled back to hide with the crew "You're here to rescue me!"
"Chopper, ready the ship for takeoff!" Hera shouted.
Zeb blasted a stormtrooper with his bo-rifle and Agent Kallus stepped forward to take his place.
"You! Lasat!" Agent Kallus pulled out a bo-rifle of his own "Face me!"
Zeb's eyes widened as he recognized the weapon of his people and he leaped forward.
"Wait!" Kanan shouted.
"No!" Alisria cried.
"Zeb!" Ezra called.
But they were too late. Zeb had already engaged Agent Kallus in a vicious battle, bo-rifle to bo-rifle. Zeb seemed to have the upper hand as he knocked Agent Kallus down.
"Only the Honor Guard of Lasan may carry a bo-rifle!" He roared.
"I know." Kallus cackled "I removed it from a guardsman myself."
He swung back at Zeb and rolled and ducked all of the furious Lasat's strikes.
"I was there when Lasan fell. I know why you fear those disruptors. I gave the order to use them." Kallus jeered.
Zeb began to swing his bo-rifle in a deadly arc over Kallus's head, but he dodged and kicked Zeb in the stomach. Kanan guided Alisria and Ezra behind another rock so they could help Zeb if he needed, and boy, did he.
Kallus jabbed Zeb in the side with his bo-rifle and electricity coursed through the Lasat's body. He groaned but continued fighting. Weakened, he was unprepared for the second jab and subsequent jolts of electricity.
"Ah! The fool Lasat's gonna get himself killed." Kanan growled.
Luckily, just then Sabine called "Okay. We're ready."
Kanan and Ezra hurried over to the T-7 ion disrupters Sabine had been modifying, took the cart the crates had been loaded on, and swung it around so it was pointed directly at the advancing stormtroopers. Alisria helped Sabine, R2, and C-3PO maneuver the second cart in the same direction.
"Everybody, push!" Sabine shouted.
The cart the girls and the droids had been pushing slid right between the legs of an incoming walker. Kanan and Ezra's plowed into the stormtroopers.
The massive explosion that followed shook the ground and Zeb, still locked in battle with Agent Kallus, stumbled. Kallus saw his chance and shocked Zeb again. The Lasat fell to his knees and bowed his head.
Alisria almost didn't see what happened next, she turned around as she heard Ezra scream "No!"
Agent Kallus's body flew backwards and slammed into the ground, flipping him head over heels several times before he crashed into a large rock. Kanan and Alisria looked at Ezra with his arms still outstretched before they locked eyes with each other.
"Spectre-2, get the kid aboard." Kanan ordered Hera.
"Right." Hera grabbed Ezra, who was staring, horrified, at his own hands "Move, all of you, now!"
Sabine pushed the R2 unit up and led the two droids back to the Ghost. Alisria and Kanan ran to Zeb's side.
"Zeb!" Kanan called "Come on, big guy. We gotta get out of here. Zeb?"
Alisria lifted the Lasat's head and bit her lip when he didn't respond, then she saw his fingers lightly curl around the staff of his bo-rifle and breathed a sigh of relief. She and Kanan draped Zeb's arms over their shoulders and half carried, half dragged him back to the ship.
"Will our torment never end?" The stupid protocol droid asked dramatically.
"Keep complaining and I'll end your torment myself." Alisria grunted, only half joking.
Hera shut the cargo bay door "Chopper, get us out of here."
They felt the ship rise and fly away. Kanan and Alisria gently laid Zeb down and the rest of the crew gathered around.
"Will he be okay?" Sabine asked, worry coating her tone.
Zeb groaned for a moment before he ground out "Yeah."
Kanan and Alisria helped him to his feet, though he was still leaning heavily on them.
"Thanks, mates." Zeb mumbled "Appreciate the save."
"Wasn't us." Alisria and Kanan shook their heads.
"It was Ezra." Alisria jerked her chin in the kid's direction.
Zeb was stunned for a moment, but his face soon twisted into a half smile in Ezra's direction, that the kid returned.
"And, Ezra, your formal Jedi training starts tomorrow." Kanan grinned.
Hera placed a proud hand on the newest crew member's shoulder and the R2 beeped happily.
R2-D2 had given the Ghost crew his master's coordinates and helped them get a message to the man, letting him know his droids were safe and on their way back to him. They reached his transport ship quickly and Kanan and Alisria brought the two droids back to their very grateful master.
"That's very generous, sir." Kanan smiled as Senator Bail Organa of Alisria's home planet, Alderaan.
"Well, I'm very fond of these droids." The Senator chuckled.
"Then I'm glad we could return them." Kanan patted R2's head.
"The simplest gesture of kindness can fill a galaxy with hope." Senator Organa quoted.
"Isn't that a Jedi saying?" Kanan raised an eyebrow.
Bail Organa simply patted Kanan and Alisria on the shoulders and smiled "Safe travels, my friends."
"Safe travels." Kanan nodded.
"Safe travels." Alisria made a traditional bow of the head, a sign of respect for the upperclass of Alderaan, signaling that she knew exactly who she was dealing with.
Alisria followed her former Master away, but she could hear the Senator say to C-3PO "You didn't tell them my name."
"Of course, I didn't, Senator Organa."
"I wonder how she knew...?"
"This entire ordeal has rather stressed every one of my circuits. Permission to shut down?" C-3PO asked.
"Granted."
The airlock shut and Alisria could hear no more of the conversation.
"I wonder who that guy was?" Kanan muttered as they made their way back to the Ghost.
Alisria simply rolled her eyes.
