In Great Lakes City, Ronnie Anne Santiago was helping her grandmother Rosa prepare for The Big Bite Continental Cook-Off.
"I'm so excited, Abuela! I can't believe you agreed to do this!" said Ronnie Anne. She packed several of her grandma's pots and pans.
"Of course, Mija. Thank you for helping me get my kitchen ready!" said Rosa. "You can't cook famous recipes in just any old pot!"
"But won't the show supply you with shiny new pots and pans for the competition?" asked Carl, Ronnie Anne's youngest cousin.
Rosa frowned at the question. "Nonsense! These pots and pans have been cooking meals for decades! Those big time T.V. people will have to deal with it!"
Frida took a picture of everyone preparing. "I can't believe Abuela is doing this! Sharing her amazing cooking for the whole world to see!" The entire Casagrande family was eager and excited for the big event.
"It's not the fame I care about. It's my passion of cooking I want to share with the show!" said Rosa.
Rosa's son Carlos adjusted his glasses. "I've been doing some research and I found out one of the competitors is Chef Remy Bones from Pennsylvania! And I heard he's really good!"
Bobby blinked. "Remy Bones? Never heard of him."
"Well, whoever he is, he's no match for my Mama!" said Maria, Ronnie Anne's mother. The Casagrandes cheered in agreement.
At the Great Lakes T.V. station, the Casagrandes were in awe at the Big Bite setup. There were two separate kitchens where the chefs will be competing. Frida was taking pictures everywhere. "Just look at all this! When Abuela wins, I'm going to paint a victory portrait in her honor!"
"Frida! Please! It's not about winning!" Rosa reminded Frida. Rose noticed Ronnie Anne staring at something with a confused look on her face. "Ronnie Anne? What's wrong, Mija?"
Ronnie Anne kept staring for a full five seconds until she shook her head back to reality. "Oops! Sorry, Abuela! I was staring at that girl over there." She pointed to a girl who looked rather peculiar. She wore a black spiderweb dress with a pink skirt and had black hair pulled into pigtails that were shaped like bat wings! What also stuck out was her pale blue skin and pointed ears. She was standing with an average looking woman with long red hair along with a tall, skinny man with a red beard and mustache dressed in glasses and a chef uniform.
"That's Chef Remy Bones!" Carlos pointed out. "And that young girl with the bat-shaped pigtails is Vampirina. She was Remy's sue chef in the episode where he won."
"Good info, mi amore!" Frida praised. "Now we have sights on our competition!" She pondered for a moment. "I must say, that Vampirina girl's look is so unique! I should take a photo of her!" She walked over to the young girl. "Excuse me! Little girl!"
Vampirina turned to see Frida's friendly face. "Oh! Hi! Is something wrong?"
Frida shook her head. "Nothing's wrong! I was wondering if I could take a picture of you! I love your look! It's so unique and original!" She took out her camera and was about to snap the photo.
"WAIT!" The red haired woman jumped im front of Vampirina as the camera flashed. "Uh, Vampirina's...very camera shy, Ma'am." said the woman. "I'm sorry."
"Oh! I see! I'm so sorry, Sweetie!" Frida apologized. "But still, your look is so cute!"
Carlota approached Vampirina as well. "I agree with Mom! You look adorable!" She put a hand on one of the young girl's bat-tails. "I've never seen a hairstyle like this before! It's the cutest goth look I've ever seen! I didn't think goth could even be cute!"
"Uh, thanks...I guess?" Vampirina looked at Frida. "Are you Mrs. Casagrande? The one who will be competing against Chef Remy?"
Frida shook her head. "No, Mija. She is!" She rushed over to Rosa and pulled her over by the arm. "Here she is! The master chef herself!"
"Uh...hola." Rosa said, waving sheepishly.
"Hola to you to!" Vampirina greeted. "I'm Vampirina and this is Chef Remy and his girlfriend Tessa."
"Pleased to make your acquaintance." said Chef Remy, bowing politely.
"Yes, very pleased." Tessa smiled. "Is this your whole family?"
"Indeed they are." Rosa nodded. "These are my children Maria and Carlos, his wife Frida, my husband Hector, and my grandchildren Ronnie Anne, Bobby, Carlota, CJ, Carl, and Carlitos."
"Wow! Big family!" said Vampirina.
"Oui! They remind me of the Loud family!" said Remy.
Ronnie Anne gasped. "You know the Louds?!"
"Yeah, they stayed at our B&B in Pennsylvania and we became good friends." said Vampirina. "How do you know them?"
"We're good friends with them too. In fact, Lori is my girlfriend!" Bobby said with pride. "We have a long distance relationship that's stronger than ever!" He sighed lovingly. "I should text her right now!" He got out his phone and texted away.
Ronnie Anne rolled her eyes. "It's almost embarrassing how much they love each other." She felt Rosa pat her shoulder.
"Don't be like that, Ronnie Anne. Someday you'll find true love." said Rosa.
Ronnie Anne rolled her eyes. "Anyway, good luck in the competition, Mr. Bones!"
"Oui, thank you, Ronnie Anne." said said the skinny chef.
"Hey, Ronnie Anne!" said a new voice. Ronnie Anne looked over and saw her best friend, Sid Chang, her sister Adelaide and their parents Becca and Stanley.
But it wasn't just the Changs, but other friends of the Casagrandes. Par, Vito Filliponio, Georgia, Margarita, and Mrs. Kernicky.
"Whoa! What are all you guys doing here?!" asked a surprised Ronnie Anne.
"We came here to support the best cook in Great Lakes City!" said Sid, grinning ear to ear. "We told all our friends about the Big Bite Competition and rounded up a cheer squad!"
Rosa felt her heart swell. "Oh, gracias, everyone! You make this old girl feel young again!"
Vampirina blinked. "Wow! I didn't know you had so many fans, Mrs. Casagrande."
Rosa shook her head. "They're not my fans, Mija. They're just really good friends. We've known each other for years! But I'm so happy they all came to support me!"
Ronnie Anne smiled until her ear picked up a strange conversation between Vampirina and Tessa.
"What does goth mean, Tessa?" asked Vampirina.
"Oh, um, nothing, Sweetheart." Tessa said. "It's just another word for a certain human style."
"Humans?!" Ronnie Anne said, overhearing them. Why did that woman explain goth like that? And how come Vampirina doesn't know what goth means if she dresses that way?
The show began. The cameras were rolling. Rosa and Ronnie Anne were at their cooking stations while Chef Remy and Tessa were at their station.
Ronnie Anne remained frozen as Trevor Porkpie spoke into his microphone. "Welcome everyone to The Big Bite Continental Cook-off! I'm your host, Trevor Porkpie! And we're here in Great Lakes City where a fan favorite, Chef Remy Bones, will be competing against this city's most famous cook held in high regard by her community, Rosa Casagrande!"
The audience cheered and clapped in excitement.
"First, we will have each contestant make a three course meal for our judge...Maybelle!" Maybelle was presented as she sat in the judge's chair.
"Whoa! Maybelle's a judge?! She's gonna be the toughest nut to crack!" said Bobby.
"Maybelle is Great Lake City's local lover of perfection in all things! She is a woman who has no room for error whatsoever!" said Trevor.
"You know it, Handsome!" Maybelle said with confidence.
"Okay, chefs. You know the rules! There will be three rounds where you will cook a delectable dish. Whoever's cooking Maybelle approves the most wins! The first round is breakfast! Ready, set, COOK!"
"You got this, Abuela!" said Ronnie Anne.
With a determined glint in her eye, Rosa tightened her apron. "You know it, Ronalda!"
A few minutes later, Rosa and Remy had finished their breakfast meals for Maybelle. Rosa was up first. "Maybelle, I made you my specially made chilaquiles! A Casagrande classic!"
Maybelle stuck her fork into the dish and popped some chilaquiles in her mouth. "Mmm! Not bad at all!" She turned to Chef Remy. "Alright, Stretch. It's your turn! Dazzle me!"
Remy gladly showed Maybelle his dish. "Presenting my Transylvania style mummy breakfast wraps!"
Maybelle took one of the wraps. She eyed it carefully, sniffed it a few times, then took a bite. After a few good chews, her eyes popped wide open and she devoured the rest of the wrap. "Whoa, Mama! Now that's a meal!"
Rosa's jaw dropped, as well as the jaws of all her family and friends. Did Maybelle like Remy's meal better?! At that moment, Rosa's good sportsmanship was burned by a fire that was growing inside her. The elderly woman's eyes shot a deadly glare at Remy. Whoever this fancy French chef was, he was going down.
The next round was lunch. Rosa whipped up one of her her famous tamales and Chef Remy made something called a slime burger. Maybelle loved Rosa's tamales. But when she bit into Remy's burger, green slime oozed from the burger meat! Remy assured her that it wasn't real slime, but a special sauce of his own creation. It was delicious, but messy. Too messy. The slimy sauce was dripping everywhere, so Rosa was given the win for the lunch round.
And now, it was a tie between Rosa and Chef Remy. They had to make a dinner meal. So, Rosa made a plate of her legendary tortas. Rosa grinned to herself. She had this in the bag. She wasn't worried at all about what this Remy bobo was making.
Once Maybelle tasted Rosa's torta, Chef Remy came in with his final dish. "Here you are, Mademoiselle Maybelle! My monster meat pie!" He presented a meat pie with a scowling monster face baked into it.
Rosa scoffed in her mind. 'Please! Who would want to eat a meal that's glaring at you?'
Maybelle took her fork and carefully ate a piece of Remy's meat pie. A few thorough chews later, she dropped her fork.
"Maybelle?!" gasped Rosa. She noticed that Maybelle's hands were shaking.
"It's...it's..." A tear came down Maybelle's cheek. "It's the most delicious thing I've ever eaten in my life!" Maybelle stood up. "There's no denying it, Trevor!" She grabbed Remy's arm and raised it high. "I declare Stretch as the winner!"
"WHAT?!" Rosa yelled.
"Uh, it...seems like we have a winner!" Trevor announced. "The winner of this episode of The Big Bite is...Chef Remy Bones!"
The audience cheered for Remy. Tessa and Vampirina hugged the chef. But the Casagrandes were absolutely crushed. Rosa fell to her knees, unable to accept this defeat.
After the show, Remy, Tessa, and Vampirina decided to celebrate Remy's victory with a tour of Great Lakes City. They walked down the sidewalk together.
"I wonder what we should do first?" Tessa wondered. "This city is so huge!"
Just then, Vampirina spotted Ronnie Anne and Sid sitting on the stairs of their apartment. "Look! There's Ronnie Anne! Maybe she can help us!" The trio approached the girls. "Hey, Ronnie Anne!"
Ronnie Anne blinked. "Oh! Uh, hi, Vampirina." she replied. Her voice sounded a bit despondent. And Vampirina noticed.
"Is everything okay?" asked Vampirina.
Ronnie Anne shook her head. "No, Abuela is really upset about losing the competition today. She locked herself in her room and won't come out."
Now feeling concerned, Tessa spoke out. "Is there anything we can do to help?"
"I don't know if there is." The sad look on Ronnie Anne's face made not just Tessa feel bad, but Vampirina and Remy as well.
"Wait! I have an idea!" said Vampirina. "Why don't you and your abuela show us around town? We were planning on doing a little sightseeing before we head back home to Pennsylvania. And you guys know this city more than we do!"
Ronnie Anne started to perk up. "That's a good idea! I'll go talk to her." She went back into her apartment. Meanwhile, Rosa was laying in her bed, feeling lower than dirt in a ditch. She talked to Sergio, the family pet for emotional support. "I just don't understand how I lost! I gave it all I had! Maybe I didn't want it enough?!"
Sergio rolled his eyes. "Just get over it already!" he squawked. Sergio wasn't the best emotional support animal.
"Rosa stood up, glowering at the parrot. "Get over it?! I can't! That chef must have cheated somehow! And I'm going to prove it!" She marched to the door and when she opened it, there stood Ronnie Anne! "Mija?!"
"Oh! Hey, Abuela!" Ronnie Anne waved. "Chef Remy and his friends stopped by wondering if you could come with us to do some sightseeing!"
Rosa felt like she could have been knocked over by a slight wind. This was the perfect opportunity to get close to Remy and expose him! Rosa plastered on a friendly smile. "Really? Sounds great, mija! I'll be right down! I just need to freshen up!"
"Awesome! See you downstairs!" Ronnie Anne left and Rosa shut the door. "Perfecto! Time to take down that so-called chef! But I can't do it alone! Sergio! You're with me!"
Sergio squawked and landed on Rosa's shoulder. "Let's do this!"
Later that day, Rosa, Sergio, and Ronnie Anne were playing soccer in the park with Vampirina, Remy, and Tessa.
"This was such a great idea, Ronnie Anne!" said Tessa. "I can't remember the last time I played soccer!"
"No problem, Tessa!" Ronnie Anne kicked the ball to Vampirina. Vampirina kicked the ball to Remy, but the ball took off awfully fast! Remy ducked in time and the ball slammed into a tree trunk! The impact was so hard, Ronnie Anne thought the tree was going to break down! But for some odd reason, the ball was stuck to the tree for a moment before falling off after a second. Ronnie Anne gasped! The impact left a huge crater right in the middle of the tree!
"Uh, wow! That must be a really old tree!" Tessa said, her voice a bit nervous.
"Hi, Ronnie Anne!" said Mr. Nakamura as he walked by. With him was his feisty dog Nelson. As Remy stood up, Nelson's noses picked up a certain smell. He started barking and ran towards Remy! Mr. Nakamura was completely caught off guard, his dog leash slipped right out of his hand.
"Nelson! HEAL!" Mr. Nakamura shouted, trying to get Nelson to stop. Remy was blindsided by Nelson and tackled to the ground. Remy could only lay completely helpless as Nelson licked his face. Nelson curiously sniffed the chef's hand and his ears perked up in delight. He bit Remy's hand!
"OUCH!" Remy quickly pulled his hand out of the dog's mouth.
"NELSON!" Mr. Nakamura pulled his dog away from Remy. "Are you okay, Sir?!"
Remy couldn't answer as he was backing far away from Nelson! He hopped onto a park bench just as Mr. Nakamura had Nelson under control. "I'm so sorry! I don't know what got into Nelson! He only goes crazy like that around beef jerky!" He blinked. "Oh, and bones!"
Remy gulped before quickly composing himself. "I-It's alright! No harm done!"
"Are you sure?" asked Ronnie Anne. "Nelson really chomped your hand." She looked at Remy's hand and jumped back in alarm. She rubbed her eyes to make sure she wasn't seeing things.
"I am quite fine, little one! The doggie barely broke the skin!" Remy insisted, chuckling in an oddly nervous way as he slowly moved away from Ronnie Anne.
Tessa helped her boyfriend get down "Maybe we should go somewhere else, Sweetie."
They walked off as Ronnie Anne stared at Chef Remy.
"Ronnie Anne? What's wrong?" asked Rosa, noticing her granddaughter's odd expression.
"Uh...nevermind." said the young girl. Ronnie Anne blinked twice. Was she seeing things or was Remy's hand...nothing but bone?
Later that day, as Ronnie Anne pondered over Remy's hand, she didn't notice that Rosa and Remy were actually getting along great! They talked for hours about different recipes and meals they've made for their families. Instead of adversaries, they became fast friends.
"It's almost dark!" Rosa said. "I have to get dinner ready or we'll be eating late tonight!"
"I can help you cook, Rosa!" Remy offered. "With an extra set of bones in the kitchen, you'll have dinner done twice as fast!"
Rosa clapped her hands. "Oh, gracias, Remy! I truly appreciate it!" She blinked. 'Extra set of bones?' she thought, confused by the chef's odd expression. She shrugged it off.
Back at the Casagrandes's apartment, the family was surprised when Rosa and Ronnie Anne returned with Remy, Tessa, and Vampirina.
"Mama?!" said a surprised Frida.
"Everyone, Remy and I will be cooking dinner together!" Rosa announced. She and Remy went into the kitchen, leaving the rest of the family alone with Tessa and Vampirina.
Vampirina looked around. "Wow! So, this is an apartment? It's amazing!"
"You've never been in an apartment, Vampirina?" asked Tessa.
"No, but I love it! It's so cozy!" Her eyes were filled with wonder.
Carlota went up to Vampirina. "Hey, Vampirina! Is it alright if I have you be a part of my fashion vlog? I'm getting a lot of good ideas from your look!"
Vampirina smiled. "Sure! I'd love to, Carlota!"
Frida heard cooing and saw Tessa playing with Carlitos. Carlitos laughed as he imitated Tessa's actions. "Wow! You're so good with him!"
Tessa chuckled as the baby hugged her. "Well, he's a good baby."
Ronnie Anne was happy that everyone was getting along so well. She saw Remy and Rosa in the kitchen. Ronnie Anne stared at Remy...something about him wasn't quite right. Lalo came up beside Ronnie Anne, he sniffed the air toward Remy and his tail started wagging really fast. His eyes were wide with excitement. He lunged forward and tackled Remy to the floor.
Remy screamed as Lalo licked him silly.
"LALO!" Rosa yelled at the dog. "Get off of-AAAAAAAAHHHHHH!"
"What's wrong, Mama?!" asked Maria.
"Remy's arm! It's broken off!" Rosa screamed. "LALO BROKE OFF HIS ARM!"
Everyone gasped. Remy's arm was completely off his body. Rosa pointed to Remy's hand that was under the sofa.
"Everyone stand back!" Maria shooed Lalo off Remy. "Don't worry, Mr. Bones! I'm a nurse! I'll help you...with..." Maria put on her rubber gloves and pulled out Remy's hand from under the couch. Her eyes widened when she saw that his arm was all bone.
Everyone gasped. They looked ready to scream.
"Nonono! Don't panic, everyone!" Remy stood up. "It's...just a prank!" He laughed nervously. "It's...why they call me Remy Bones!" He laughed again, but his laughter was being drowned out by something else.
The Casagrandes stared at Remy's buckling knees. They were making the loudest rattling noise.
"Are you...rattling?!" asked Ronnie Anne.
"NO! No, he's not!" Vampirina insisted. Her bat tails started to shake.
"Vee! C-Calm down, Sweetie!" Tessa tried to coax the child to relax, but Vampirina started turning into a bat! The Casagrandes screamed. At the same time, Lalo ripped of Remy's clothes with his teeth, exposing his entire body...or lack of body!
Frida screamed her loudest scream. "HE'S A SKELETON!" She pointed at Vampirina. "AND VEE'S A BAT!" The woman fainted and fell into Carlos' arms.
"Wait! Wait! Wait! It's not what you think!" Tessa insisted.
"Yes, it is!" Rosa shrieked. "THEY'RE EVIL SPIRITS! RUUUUUN!" They family ran for the door, but Tessa stepped in their path.
"EVERYBODY STOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOP!" Tessa yelled in her most powerful, thunderous voice.
The Casagrandes immediately shut their mouths. Even Vampirina and Remy were silenced.
Tessa sighed. She looked at Remy and Vampirina. "Guys, we have to tell them."
Vampirina returned to her normal self. "Yeah, I think we don't have a choice."
Remy reattached his arm. "Oui, we don't." He removed his glasses and fake beard, showing the Casagrandes his entire skull.
Tessa looked at the terrified family. "Guys, Remy's a skeleton and Vampirina's a vampire. They're real monsters, natural born monsters."
"Oui, I am a skeleton." Remy said.
"And I'm a vampire." said Vampirina.
"Are you going to suck our blood?!" Carl squealed, pointing at Vampirina.
"What?! What are you talking about?!" asked a shocked and confused Vampirina.
"Isn't that what vampires do?! Bite people and drink the blood out of their bodies like a smoothie?!" asked Carl.
Vampirina was in total shock. Is this what humans think of vampires?! "No! Vampires don't drink blood! That's...that's..." She was so stunned, she couldn't even say the right word.
"Revolting!" Remy said for her.
"Really?!" asked Ronnie Anne.
"Really!" Vampirina said.
"And...you're not going to eat us or hurt us?" asked Bobby, pointing at Remy.
"WHAT?! I do not cook and eat humans!" Remy said, offended. "That is completely disgusting!"
"So...you're good monsters?" asked C.J.
Vampirina nodded. "We are. We're really sorry for scaring you. But you have to keep this a secret! People can't know about us being monsters!"
"Oui! We just want to fit in among the humans!" Remy said. "If people knew I was a skeleton, I'll be ruined! I'll never be able to cook for humans ever again!"
"You...like to cook for humans?" asked Rosa.
"Of course! Well, I always cooked for monsters. But once I started cooking for Vee and her human friends, I was afraid I'd never make a meal to satisfy a human. But once I tried cooking new human things, I learned so many amazing recipes to make my cooking even more spooktacular!" Remy smiled. "And I certainly learned a lot from you, Rosa."
"You have?!"
"Oui. I sampled some of the leftover food you made for the competition and fell completely in love with it! Good food brings good people together. And your family is a perfect example of that. You're not only an amazing chef, Rosa, you're an amazing grandmother."
Rosa sniffled, wiping a tear from her eye. "Gracias, Remy. You know, we still have that dinner to make." She offered her hand. Remy smiled and took it.
The dinner was finished. The Casagrandes were in complete awe. Rosa's cooking contrasted from Remy's cooking. Remy's food looked quite...monstrous.
"So, uh, what have you made, Remy?" Ronnie Anne asked, looking grossed out by the ears of corn covered in what looked like green slime.
"That is my blob on the cob, little one." Remy answered. "I also made my fried vulture and for dessert...my strawberry scream cake!"
The strawberry scream cake actually started screaming. Ronnie Anne gulped, her family looked at bit pale.
"Don't worry, it's safe to eat." Tessa assured them. She cut into the cake and had a slice for herself. She began eating her piece without a flinch. "It takes courage to try monster food. But it's actually really good." She giggled. "Especially when my Remy makes it." Remy thanked Tessa by putting her arms around her and placing a kiss on the cheek. Tessa giggled even more as she snuggled into her boyfriend's arms.
Frida wiped away the falling tears from her eyes. "Oh, it's so beautiful!" She immediately started crying.
"Thanks for keeping our secret Ronnie Anne." said Vampirina.
Ronnie Anne smiled. "No problem, dude. This is definitely a secret worth keeping. I mean, how many kids can say they're friends with a vampire and a skeleton?! It's awesome!"
It more awesome than Ronnie Anne imagined. She and her family were getting along so well with the monsters.
"I cannot thank you all enough for such a wonderful visit!" Remy said. "I thank you from the bottom of my heart!"
"Me too! Thank you, Casagrandes, for being so good to us!" Tessa said, holding Remy's hand. Remy looked at Tessa with loving eyes. Seeing the way Tessa's eyes sparkled made Remy's heart skip a beat...if he had one.
"You know, Tessa," Remy began. "The Casagrandes are such a wonderful family. And I am honored to be part of the Hauntley family as well. And I think both of our families will be even more magical when we're truly together." Remy got down on one knee.
Tessa gasped, covering her mouth in shock. The Casagrandes gasped in shock.
"Tessa, things were scary when we first met. But we learned to face our fears and become a couple. Words can't describe how you made this skeleton feel so complete." He reached into his chef hat and took out a small black box, opening it to reveal the ring inside. "Tessa, will you marry me?"
Tears in her eyes, Tessa smiled and nodded.
The room exploded with cheers as Remy slipped the ring onto the human's finger. The two hugged and shared a passionate kiss. Frida cried as she took pictures. The rest of the family cried tears of joy too, even Sergio.
Vampirina saw Ronnie Anne wipe away a few tears as well. Ronnie Anne saw Vampirina smiling at her. "Don't tell anyone I cried from this mushy love stuff, okay?" she sniffled.
"I won't tell if you won't tell." Vampirina offered her hand.
Ronnie Anne smiled. "Deal." The two friends shook hands.
