Star Wars: Sequels Retold

After Luke Skywalker disappears, his son is thrust on an adventure to find him and save the galaxy from the First Order. This leads him to a young scavenger named Rey, who will change his life forever... A retelling of the sequel trilogy in a more satisfying way, changing certain parts of the story, adding two or three OC's and elements from Legends.

6. Book 1: Chapter 6

Book 1:

The Force Awakens

Chapter 6: Resistance

For a moment, nothing. Then, eerily silent, an impossible blast of fire light, like an atomic bomb test times five zillion, blasts from miles away into the sky. Seconds later, a terrible explosive roar is heard across the planet!

The Troopers and everyone there are nearly pushed back by the force of it, the magnitude of it! Many have to cover their eyes from the power and intensity.

For miles around the firebeam, the ice and snow around it melt instantly.

Runoff tunnels flooded with an ocean of freshwater. Airborne creatures by the thousands burst from trees and take flight.

Hux watches, his eyes wild with the evil power he's been given at the palm of his hands.

Kylo Ten is seen watching the Starkiller firing.

….

Finn is about to board the Alien Freighter, but the sound from the sky makes him turn back. He sees the path if fire and his blood runs cold, his heart sinks.

….

At a massive distance we see the planet's that make up the Republic capital system. Increasingly lit, then powerfully hit by the vast fireblast, which obliterated it all!

….

The galaxy center of government at night. Impressive structures of a large city planet. Senators and dignitaries look in uncomprehending horror to the night sky. The light glowing from a great distance, a circle of fire, like a small sun. Appearing from nowhere and growing close and massive, turning night to day! And in seconds the fire blocks out everything else, and the entire planet of Hosnian Prime is incinerated!

….

Back on Takodana.

A crowd of aliens files out from inside, all eyes on the fire in the sky. Dozens of languages exclaiming fear and horror. We find Han and Chewie moving out, looking up.

Finn runs towards them, "it was the Republic."

Han and Chewie turn as Finn arrives, moving quickly through the crowd. With dread.

Finn, "the First Order, they've done it. Where's Rey? And Jace?"

As Jace races after Rey, he stops for a moment. He feels a great disturbance in the force. As if millions, no, trillions of voices cried out in fear, and were suddenly silenced. It was like what Obi Wan Kenobi felt when Alderaan was destroyed, but so much worse.

He tried to shake it off as best as he could as he followed his friend.

Rey races through the forest and finally comes to a stop, overwhelmed and exhausted. At an emotional breaking point, she has no idea where to go, who to turn to.

Then she hears a beep, and turns to see BB-8 and Jace, catching up with her.

Rey, "what are you doing?"

BB-8 beeps.

Rey, "you have to go back."

He beeps again.

Jace, "we're not going without you Rey!"

Rey, "BB-8. No, you can't…. You have to go back, you're too important. Both of you are. They'll help you."

Jace steps towards Rey.

Jace, "we both saw visions after touching the saber. I saw horrible things. The deaths of all of my friends. I lost my sister."

Rey, "you had a sister?"

Jace nodded, "she was the only one who could stand toe to toe with Ren. When he was about to strike her down, I freaked out. A huge force shockwave separated all of us, and knocked me out. When I came to, all that I could find of Padme was her cloak and lightsaber."

Rey, "Padme?"

Jace, "that was her name. Padme Jaina Skywalker. Named after our grandmother. I don't even know if she's alive or dead. But, the reason I'm telling you all of this, is because I know your pain Rey. You've lost your family. So have I. But we have each other now. You and I. I care about you Rey. I don't want to see you give into this pain. Don't shut me out."

Rey and Jace both had tears streaming down their faces.

Rey, "... Owen…."

She called him by his first name.

He didn't mind.

Rey lunged forward and hugged Jace tightly.

Rey, "h-how will I know I w-won't lose you, l-like I lost my parents?"

Jace held her as he said, "I promise you, I will never leave you behind."

They looked at one another, right in the eyes.

Jace, "Rey…."

Rey, "Owen…."

They slowly moved in, their lips nearly touching.

But that's when they heard another sound, much louder now.

They look up again. In front of the system, an attack is occurring, a fleet of First Order ships roar overhead, toward the castle! Rey and Jace's hearts sink.

Their friends are in danger!

….

Maz leads Han, Finn and Chewie down the hall, fast.

Maz, "I've had this for ages…"

They enter the treasure room.

Maz opens the box and holds out the lightsaber to Finn.

Maz, "kept it locked away. For either Luke or Owen to take it."

Han, "where'd you get that?"

Maz, "I was once on an adventure with Luke and Lando. Taking care of any imperial activity on Cloud City. Luke found his father's saber. How he did, he never said. But before he went into exile, he gave me this saber. To keep it safe. Take it Finn! Find your friends!"

Finn grabs it as the room is shaken by an above ground attack.

Maz, "those beasts! They're here!"

...

Rey, Jace and BB-8 race fast back toward the castle. Explosions can be heard from the direction they're headed!

They race through the trees and see Maz's castle, being destroyed by First Order ships! Aliens are running, getting obliterated by screaming TIE Fighters! Other TIE Fighters and transporters land, stormtroopers attacking.

Just then, filtered radio calls get their attention. Nearby stormtroopers have spotted them and fire their blasters!

One says, "FN-417, hold position!"

Rey takes cover and grabs her blaster…. But it won't fire!

She panics, then realizes, "safety!"

As Rey switches off the safety, she and Jace both blast a trooper each.

They quickly retreat, calling to BB-8 to follow them

BB-8 follows Rey and Jace away from the castle, firing back at more chasing Troopers!

Jace unleashes his saber, using it to deflect the bolts as he runs with Rey and BB-8.

Meanwhile, Kylo Ren moves through the debris of the castle. A Stormtrooper approaches and says, "sir, the droid was spotted heading west, with a girl, and the Jedi."

Kylo Ren looks back sharply, in the trio's direction.

Jace, Rey and BB-8 move swiftly, terrified. Rey stops them and says, "you have to keep going, stay out of sight, I'll try to fight 'em off."

Jace, "we're not leaving you!"

Rey, "if the First Order gets their hands on all of us, we're doomed!"

Jace knows she's right, but he doesn't like it.

Jace puts on a brave face as he says, "Rey, if we don't see each other again, there's one thing I gotta do."

Rey, "this isn-"

Jace quickly moved in and captured Rey's lips for a few fleeting seconds.

He pulls back, seeing Rey's shocked face.

Jace, "I will see you again. I promise."

Rey nods.

BB-8 beeps bravely through her fear.

Rey, "I hope so, too."

BB-8 beeps and heads off with a reluctant Jace. Rey runs and takes cover behind a massive, mossy tree. She's terrified, but pushes through it for her friends.

….

Han, Chewie, Finn and Maz, exhausted, climb up and peek through debris.

Han, "come on, Chewie!"

Maz turns to Finn and says, "Jace, Rey and BB-8, they need you. Now go."

Finn, "I need a weapon."

Maz grabs his wrist and holds up his hand, the saber.

Maz, "you have one!"

He looks at her questioningly. He's supposed to use the lightsaber?! He turns it on.

The blue blade shocks him at first, but his face grows determined.

Han and Chewie run, taking cover from blasts, firing back at Stormtroopers, taking some out!

Han, "hey, can I try that?"

Han borrows Chewbacca's bowcaster, and fires on Stormtroopers, sending them flying.

Han, "I like this thing."

Finn surprised a stormtrooper with the lightsaber, striking them down, then another! He may be untrained, but he's athletic, brave, impressive.

"Traitor!"

Finn turns to see who said that.

And he freezes for a moment.

It's Captain Phasma!

She puts the gun on her back, and activates a mace.

She lunges at Finn, and the two begin a furious battle.

Each strike shakes the ground around them.

As Finn faces his former superior, he feels something he didn't before.

Bravery.

Phasma is more skilled with her weapon, and Finn only holds out for a bit before she knocks him down!

Phasma goes over to the downed man and says, "you rebel scum!"

Phasma is about to end him, when she's suddenly sent flying into a wall! She's been knocked out.

Wide-eyed Finn sees Jace run over, having used the force to save his friend.

Han is running right behind him with his blaster.

Han helps him up, "you okay, Big deal?"

Finn, "thanks!"

Jace, "I'm just glad you see you back man. If you want, I'll train you to use weapons like a lightsaber."

Finn, "that would definitely help.

But ten stormtroopers come over a rise, blasters aimed.

One says, "don't move! TK-338, we have targets in custody!"

With no way out, they drop their weapons. Both sabers hit the ground. Two troopers pick them up.

Han's mind races as a squad of troopers appear behind them.

They see a few getting Phasma on a gurney, and carrying her to a transport ship.

Jace, Finn, Han and Chewie are marched by Stormtroopers back toward a transport, hands on their heads.

But then, a familiar roar tips across the lake. Han turns, they all do, to see what's coming toward them across the water.

X-Wings and Resistance aircraft appear, and begin firing at the First Order ship!

Han feels a surge of hope as Chewie talks to him.

A trooper says, "we have incoming at two-eight-point-six! Move! Dispatch! Move! Scramble all squads! Repeat, scramble all squads! Anti-air cover en route to our position!"

Han, "it's the Resistance."

Jace, "Hell yes!"

One X-Wing in particular, marked in black, swoops down and takes out the parked TIE Fighters and Troopers!

It's Poe Dameron at the stick of his X-wing!

Poe, "go straight ahead and don't let these dogs scare you!"

Jess, "copy that!"

Snap, "we're with you, Poe!"

The Stormtroopers around Finn, Jace, Han and Chewie scatter as they are tossed in explosions! Finn and Jace quickly pick up their respective sabers!

Han, "quick!"

Chewie picks up his Bowcaster, Han takes the blaster and shoots a Trooper.

Finn, "Woohoo! YEAH! That's one helluva pilot!"

Jace can sense who it is and says, "you better believe it!"

Poe, "WOOHOO!"

Back in the darkened woods, Rey, terrified, keeps her blaster aimed. Her eyes darting around for her pursuer.

And then:

She hears the unique rasping noise of Kylo Ren's lightsaber coming to life!

Rey recognizes the sound from her force vision.

Rey's heart skips a beat. She's even more scared now.

Kylo Ren appears from behind a tree. Rey fires again and again as Kylo Ren moves toward her, using his lightsaber to deflect every single blast!

She fires ferociously, but Kylo Ren keeps coming! His hand rises, and Rey suddenly stops and gasps, unable to move.

Kylo, "the girl I've heard so much about."

He walks around her, slowly, but she won't let herself cry.

Kylo, "the droid. Jace."

He comes around to see her face. After a tense second, he whips his saber to her eyes, illuminating her face.

Kylo, "where are they?"

The epic battle between the Resistance and the First Order continues, reflected in the still lake.

We hear a trooper yell, "request air support!"

Kylo Ren turns off his saber and reaches up towards Rey's face. She can't move, and strains in agony. After a moment, surprised by what he finds, he removes his hand. She is relieved but still afraid.

Kylo, "the map. You've seen it."

Rey is horrified. He touches her face again. The pain is evident as tears stream from Kylo Ren, taking more from her mind...

She stares at him, terrified and straining in agony.

Kylo, "and dear Jace…. You care about him. And he feels the same…."

Kylo Ren, mid-interrogation, turns towards the sounds of the explosions. Stormtroopers approach through the woods.

A trooper says, "sir, Resistance fighters! We need more troops."

Kylo Ren turns back to Rey, his hand still on her face.

Kylo, "pull the division out. Forget the droid. We have what we need."

A gesture from Kylo Ren and Rey loads consciousness, falling into Ren's arms as he says, "and if we have her, the Jedi will follow."

The black marked X-Wing swoops down again, firing and exploding another TIE Fighter! On the ground, a stormtrooper yells, "pull back the tree line!"

Han and Chewie dodge debris, firing and taking out troopers.

Finn takes out two troopers with the blaster, then, out of breath, turns to see Kylo Ren in the forest, carrying Rey in his arms, into his shuttle! Finn's heart shatters.

He turns to Jace, who's just sliced a trooper in half.

Finn, "Jace!"

Jace turns to Finn, and sees Kylo Ren with Rey.

Jace, "no no no. Not again!"

Han stops and turns, seeing Kylo Ren entering his shuttle.

Han is rocked by the sight.

Finn, "NO! REY!"

Heroically, Finn and Jace run towards the shuttle through laser blasts and explosions, which Jace shrugs off with the force, but the shuttle takes off.

Finn irrationally chases it, and screams desperately, "no, no, no, no... REY!"

Jace tries using his abilities to jump at the shuttle, but only just misses it, and crashes to the ground, his knees aching as he gets up.

In crazed frustration, Finn stops running, watches the receding First Order ships, Rey their captive.

In the forest, BB-8 moves fast, then stops and looks up as the First Order ships retreat off world. A considered moment of peace. BB-8 heads back for the castle.

Back at the ruins of the castle, Finn runs to Han, "he took her! Did you see that? He took her. She's gone!"

Jace remains silent as the sight sticks in his mind. It plays over and over again.

Han, "yeah, yeah, I know…"

Han hugs his nephew for a moment before he and Chewie head off.

Jace follows after them.

He could sense who had arrived.

Han and Jace move towards a Resistance transport landing in the debris.

BB-8 rolls up beside them, in wait for the transport.

Han holds a look of dread, while Jace holds one of anticipation.

He fishes Nine out of his bag and turns them on for this.

Finally, the transport door opens.

And standing there is Leia.

She sees Han and is stunned. A silent beat, husband and wife reunited for the first time in years. In the smoke and embers, no one says a word.

Jace looks past his aunt, and sees a familiar face.

An older woman with fiery red hair, with grey in it, wearing a black tank top and pants under a beige jacket.

She held a look of shock, but joy as well.

This was Jace's mother.

Mara Jade/Skywalker.

Then C-3PO walks out from the transport and into the field.

C-3PO, "goodness! Han Solo! It is I, See-Threepio! You probably don't recognize me because of the red arm. Oh, and Master Jace! It is so good to see you and R9 fully functional!"

Jace, "heya Threepio."

C-3PO, "look who it is! Did you see who? Oh. Excuse me, Prin- uh, General. And, Mistress Mara. Sorry. Come along, BB-8. Quickly."

BB-8 beeps at the other droid.

C-3PO, "yes, I must get my proper arm reinstalled."

He hurries off. Leaving the group alone.

Mara moves past Leia as she and Han stare at one another.

Mara holds her son's face and says, "look at you. Owen, my little boy. I was so worried about you when we heard from Poe."

Jace, "yeah, how did he get back to the base?"

Mara, "he hitched a transport there. But, oh, I'm just glad you're okay!"

Jace, "it's great to see you too mom."

Mara, "and I see you have Nine with you."

Jace holds up Nine, "I've been keeping them safe for you."

Mara grabbed the head, smiling at her droid, "thank the Force we got done fixing up your body. You'll be off on missions in one piece in no time!"

They hear a click and turn, seeing one last trooper trying in vain to blast them.

Mara quickly thrusts her hand forward, using the Force to send the trooper onto a sharp piece of metal.

Mara, "damn bucket-heads."

Jace chuckles at his mom as he says, "you still got it mom."

Han turns back to Leia, after they watched the exchange between mother and son.

Han, "you changed your hair."

Leia, "same jacket."

Han, "no, new jacket."

Chewie, glad to see Leia, greets her with a hug. Chewie groans a few words, looks at Han, and then boards the ship.

It is complicated, loving and painful, all at the same time.

Han says, quietly, "... I saw him. Leia, I saw our son. He was here."

Leia hears this, and feels the same pain.

As Mara looks at her son for confirmation, he replies, "it's true. Cousin Ben was here. And he's kidnapped my friend…."

Maz watches through the smoke.

….

Later, we see the Falcon and surviving X-Wings roar towards a planet with green flora and a ring of asteroids.

This is D'qar

The ships descend among grassy mounds and sunken structures.

Large grass mounds cover hangars, beneath the odd, giant trees. We see a ground crew direct an X-Wing to a landing. In the foreground, another X-wing canopy opens, and a pilot climbs out. We see the Millennium Falcon. Finn runs down the ramp, desperate and searching. Jace runs right behind him, but tries to keep his cool.

Then BB-8 speeds right past them, almost knocking Finn down. Finn watches as BB-8 rolls over to the pilot getting out of the black market X-Wing. The Pilot's helmet comes off.

It is Poe!

Finn can't believe what he's seeing.

Mara had already told Jace, but it didn't make him any less happy.

And Poe, kneeling in a warm reunion with BB-8, listens and reacts to something the droid tells him. Poe looks up and sees Finn and Jace, and he can't believe it either! Poe smiles, points at Jace and Finn. From a distance, Finn gestures in sheer amazement that Poe is alive.

Finn, "Poe. Poe Dameron."

They move to each other and embrace.

Finn, "you're alive!"

Poe, "so are you! You and Jace!"

Finn, "what happened to you?"

Poe, "what happened? I got thrown from the crash, woke up at night, no you, no ship, nothing! Had to take a transport here!"

Jace, "mom told me. It's great to see you Poe!"

Poe shakes Jace's hand vigorously.

BB-8 beeps. Poe listens and turns to Finn.

Poe, "BB-8 says that you saved him. That you helped him and Jace get off of Jakku."

Finn, "no, no, no. It wasn't just me."

Poe, "you helped complete our mission, Finn. That's my jacket?"

Finn, "oh here."

He tries to take the jacket off, but Poe stops him.

Poe, "no, no, no. Keep it. It suits you. You're a good man, Finn."

Jace clapped a hand on Finn's shoulder, "never doubted him for a second."

Finn, "Poe- we need your help."

Jace, Finn and Poe move fast. Finn takes in this makeshift command center, buried deep among vines and roots. They arrive at Leia and Mara, who stand with a group of Resistance Officers, including Admirals Ackbar and Statura.

Poe, "General Organa. General Jade. Sorry to interrupt, this is Finn, he needs to talk to you."

Leia, "and I need to talk to him. That was incredibly brave, what you did. Renouncing the First Order, saving this man's life, as well as my nephew's."

Mara, "take it from another defector Finn, you've done a great thing."

Finn is suprised, but continues, "thank you, ma'am, but a friend of mine was taken prisoner-"

Leia, "Han told us about the girl, I'm sorry."

Mara could see Jace is in pain, and Finn is startled.

Poe jumps in, "Finn's familiar with the weapon that destroyed the Hosnian system. He worked on the base."

Leia, "we're desperate for anything you can tell us."

Finn, "that's where our friend was taken. We've got to get there, fast."

Jace, "Aunt Leia, please, she means a lot to me."

Everyone looked at him.

Jace, "er, us!"

Everyone could tell Jace had feelings for Rey. Even Finn, who had a small distraction to her, could see the feelings between the two.

Leia, "and I will do everything I can to help, but first you must tell us all you know."

The two young men agreed, eager to save their friend.

As you can see, I added the parts with Jace and Rey, to build up their connection, which will only grow as the story goes on.

Jace and Finn are both gonna want to rescue Rey, but Jace is more determined to save her, due to his growing feelings for her.

And instead of that random trooper, we have Phasma fighting against Finn! It may have been short, but it helps build up their fight in Last Jedi, and the fight I plan for them in Rise of Skywalker. Those movies are when the changes are gonna be big.

And we get to finally see Mara show up! Hope I'm doing her justice.

As for one final note, I have finished writing all of the chapter's, so expect a new one every night. And with that said, I'll have a poll up until the very last chapter, asking what Rey should call herself at the very end.
