Yaz arrived at the bottom of the stairs. She sighed and in the empty seat next to Graham.
"You okay?" Graham said, putting a comforting arm around her shoulder.
"Yeah," She said, wiping an eye, "it's just hard y'know? To see her like this."
"What do you mean by that?" Ryan asked, squeezing himself by her other side.
"She's just so different now, hopeless."
"Hey, it's okay, because we are all gonna help her." Graham said. "Aren't we?"
"Yeah. I know." Yaz answered, "it's just hard seeing her like this."
Jack had gotten up by this point and was pacing. Ravio and Yedlarmi sat quietly.
"Yaz, the Doctor's had a long life, she's had a lot of stuff to deal with, she always bounces back." Jack said, unconvinced himself.
"Jack." Yaz snapped, uncontrollably, "you may have known her, 'for a long time,' as you say, but you haven't been there you have no idea what has happened to her recently."
Jack was taken aback.
"And to be honest," Yaz calmed, "neither do I."
It was momentarily silent. "Look I'm sorry, okay, it's just, I'm scared for her."
"Me too," Graham admitted.
"And me," Ryan agreed.
Jack sat down on the far end of the empty sofa.
After a few awkward moments, Graham stood. "Right, I think we could all do with a good nights rest,"
Ryan frowned, "but there's five of us, where are we all supposed to sleep?"
"Yeah, I'm not going anywhere, I'm sorry, but I'm not leaving the Doctor, I'll stay up all night if I have too."
"I don't really sleep that much so there's one less." Jack said.
"Right then, there's Ryan's room and that has a pull out, so Ryan and Yedlarmi can sleep in there and Jack you join them if you want too, and Yaz and Ravio can have the sofas, and I guess I have some pj's knockin' around somewhere." Graham decided.
"What? And you get that nice double bed to yourself?" Said Ryan, cheekily.
"Yeah well one, it's my house and two I'm givin' you all clothes, so shush you." Graham answered. "Plus, you have a pull out so one of you can have a bed to yourself too."
"Thank you, Graham." Ravio said.
"See Ryan, at least someone appreciates me." Graham teased.
Yaz rolled her eyes, smiling at their familiar banter.
Graham left with Ryan, Jack and Yedlarmi upstairs, leaving Ravio and Yaz.
Graham popped his head over the banister, "I'll be back in a minute with some clothes and blankets, jus' wait there."
"Ok, thanks," Yaz said, and Ravio nodded in agreement.
Graham disappeared from view.
"Am I taking this one then?" Ravio asked, moving from the arm chair to the empty sofa opposite.
"Yeah, sure, I don't mind," Yaz said, shrugging.
The mood was certainly awkward, after all, they hardly knew each other and now they were were having a sleepover.
Yaz sighed and stretched and allowed herself to fall back onto the couch. She stared thoughtfully at the ceiling.
"I'm sorry, Ravio," she said quietly, facing her head to Ravio, "I never thanked you for coming to help us, and, to be honest, I never really asked how you are."
"Well, thank you for asking now," she said, lying down on her sofa, "I'm fine."
This was very half-hearted however, and highly unconvincing.
Yaz looked back at the ceiling.
"Can I ask you something?" She said, looking intently at the ceiling rather then Ravio.
"What?" She answered nervously, doing the same.
"Why did you help us? I mean, even now, you could've came to the prison and left, Jack could've taken you anywhere and you could've started a new life."
"Honestly?" Ravio said, taking a deep breath.
"Yes."Yaz said.
Ravio took a deep breath. "After eascaping to here, I felt awful, I mean, me and Yedlarmi were the only survivors of all our friends, they all died, and Ko Sharmis and the Doctor were dead because they sacrificed themselves for all of us, just survivors guilt or something, I don't know. And then Jack came and told us she was alive, so I justreally needed to go and get a win and save someone. Now though, it doesn't feel like we've done that yet."
"Yeah." Yaz agreed solemnly.
"But she will be, we'll make sure of that."
At that moment, the quick steps of Graham descended the stairs.
"Here you go, ladies, there's some shirts and it gets quite hot so I'm sure blankets will do."
"Thank you, Graham." Ravio said.
"Of course," he said, taking the hint that the conversation had finished," I'll um, see you in the morning then, sleepwell."
"Night, Graham." Yaz said.
Meanwhile, upstairs, Ryan was shuffling his bedside table to the corner of the room in order to pull out the mattress that lay beneath his bed. Yedlarmi helped by pulling out the bottom corner whilst Ryan did the top end.
After the pair finished, they got up from their crouch and looked at their handiwork.
"Who's sleeping where then?" Ryan asked, clearly wanting the bed.
"If you want the bed, I don't sleeping on the mattress," Yedlarmi shrugged.
"You sure?" Ryan queried, hoping desperately he'd still decline the bed.
"Yeah." Answered Yedlarmi, rolling onto the mattress.
"And what about you?" Ryan asked, causing Jack to raise an eyebrow. "If you're saying ya don't sleep, what are you gonna do all night."
Jack shrugged, and decided to respond with words that didn't make it seem like staying awake your whole life bothered him half as much as it actually did. "I don't know yet, pretend to sleep, go on a walk, write about my day in a diary, I don't exactly have an itinerary."
"Right," Ryan mumbled, who in actual fact was deeply interested in why this man didn't sleep, was it a species thing? Perhaps it's just because he's concerned about his friend. However, whatever the reason, sharing it at.. he checking his watch.. two o'clock in the morning probably when he was going to get his answers.
So instead, Ryan walked to his drawers and pulled open the top one, "I assume you don't want one, Jack?"
"What makes you say that?" Jack responded sarcastically and with a smile as he flexed his signature outfit.
"Right..." Ryan mumbled again, just smiling along. In the drawer Ryan took out two t-shirts and two pairs of pajama bottoms. He then handed half to Yedlarmi, "here, hope they fit alright."
"I'm sure they'll be fine." Yedlarmi smiled greatfully. "Thank you."
"Don't mention it," Ryan smiled back, moving to the bedside to get changed.
"You're stripping here?" Jack said, sitting in the chair in the far corner and looking at Ryan, he raised an eyebrow and smiled his fimiliar flirtatious smile.
"Yeah." Ryan said, in his boxers, and quickly yanking up his trousers. "You better not be watching us like that all night."
"Right, yeah, sorry," Jack said, sitting up straighter darting his eyes to Yedlarmi who was shirtless.
Ryan rolled his eyes knowingly as he noticed Jack's expression.
Oblivious to this, Yedlarmi put his shirt on and turned to Jack. "Did you not want to lie down at least? Like on a mattress?"
"Well I guess, but if all the bedspace is taken I don't mind just stopping here." Jack waved him off with a floppy hand.
"No, no no, seriously it's fine have the mattress, I'll sleep in the chair." Yedlarmi continued.
Ryan, who was watching the two debate over this mattress, he finally, and regrettably, gave in. "I guess two could fit in this double bed."
Jack and Yedlarmi turned to face him. Then Jack said, "Okay then it's settled, I have to mattress, you two have to bed."
By now, hours had passed and Yedlarmi and Ryan were still sleeping peacefully on each opposite side of the bed. Jack lay on the bare mattress, he had insisted he didn't need a blanket, and stared with his hands behind his head, looking up at the ceiling.
He chuckled silently to himself at Ryan, who's head obstructed his view.
Oh Doctor, I hope you're okay.
It's my fault, I brought us all too late. How long has she lived since I last saw her. She looks so different, her being blonde more then anything else.
He chuckled to himself.
I see she still likes long coats though, I mean, I still have my coat from when I last saw her so I guess things never really change. Apart from how she's feeling now. But what is she feeling, I really don't kno—
At that moment he heard a sound, he couldn't tell what it was exactly, but it definitely wasn't a happy sound.
Neither of the others stirred.
He decided it was best to leave them.
Jumping silently to the door, Jack opened it a crack and peered out to the landing.
Nothing.
Cautiously, he stepped out and followed the muffled sound of crying.
It led to the Doctor's room.
Jack dropped his arms from his previous, defensive stance, now understanding what was going on. The door was still ajar from how Yaz left it, yet Jack didn't invade her privacy by looking inside. Instead, he hesitatantly knocked on the door, "Doctor, are you okay?"
The crying stopped.
"I'm going to come in okay?" Jack whispered as he slowly pushed the door open.
The bedside lamp was on so Jack could clearly see the Doctor clutching her sheets as she faced away pretending to be asleep.
"Doctor, I know you're awake."
"I know." She stated, unmoving.
"Are you o—"
"I wasn't crying," she said defensively, turning to face him.
"Of course not," Jack winked and forced a reassuring smile as walked to and then lay upright on the spare side of the bed. "But if you were, I wouldn't judge you for it."
She sighed and turned to face him.
"Have you slept at all?" 13 asked, parent-like as always.
He shook his head, "have you?"
"Not really," she said with a scrunch to her face, "but then again, I'm not much of a sleeper anyway."
Jack sighed, "that makes two of us."
The Doctor, sat upright, wrapping the duvet further around her shoulders as she was freezing.
"How long has it been?" 13 asked, nervous about the answer.
"For me, it's been about.. 30 years... maybe? What about you? How many regenerations has it been?"
"Pfft.. well," the Doctor laughed slightly, "there was one with a chin, then an old Scottish man and then... me. Although..." she trailed off.
"What?" Jack asked, concerned.
13 questioned on whether or not to tell him, "I met myself."
"Huh?" Jack said.
"There was this other woman claiming to be me from the past and I said no-no—"
"Hang on a minute," Jack interrupted, "slow down."
"Gallifrey lied. They genetically engineered the Timelords, using me, because I am apparently the timeless child and then," she ranted, "they erased my memories and made me start a whole new life, and, I got this information from the Master."
Jack looked shocked.
"Yes, I know. Him. And I only got this after he destroyed the whole planet and turned them all into cybermen!"
"What Timelord-cybermen?" Jack looked horrified.
"Yes and instead of figuring out my life I've been stuck in a dark pit for three years, and they were probably some of the worst years of my life."
Jack rubbed her back reassuringly with his arm.
"Although, I don't remember my whole life so I couldn't say for definite," she mumbled sadly.
Jack felt awful for her, "we're gonna get your TARDIS back, Doctor."
13 nodded, smiling a sad smile, "I really miss that box, Jack."
"Well, when you use a watch to time travel, you start to miss it too." Jack joked.
"Ha," 13 laughed, "so you finally admit it."
"Yeah well.." he trailed off, smiling back.
The two sat in silence for a while. Not awkward silence, just peaceful.
"It's seven o'clock in the morning." The Doctor said when the clock she had been staring at for the past half hour had finally changed from six.
"So it is," Jack said, turning to look at the Doctor.
13 turned to her head to him also, "it's killing me just sitting here, wanna go for a walk before the others wake up?"
"I'd like nothing more."
