Once Upon a Time in Enchancia

Welcome to Chapter 47 of "Once Upon a Time in Enchancia". Song in this chapter: a slightly modified version of "Sister Time" from the "Elena of Avalor" episode "Model Sister".

Chapter 47: Trip to Avalor

January 28, 1870

It was a Friday morning in the Enchancian port village of Evermore Landing, located near Enchancia Castle. At the dock where The Floating Palace was docked, sixteen-year-old Sofia, sixteen-year-old Lucinda, sixteen-year-old Dorrie, and sixteen-year-old Candice had just boarded. The four were on their way to Avalor for a special series of workshops for sorcerers and sorceresses. Sofia and Lucinda qualified because they were the royal sorceresses of Enchancia. And Dorrie and Candice qualified because they were the sorceresses-in-waiting of Enchancia. On the dock, people from Evermore Landing happily cheered and waved at The Floating Palace (author's note: a piece of instrumental music here - "Titanic Soundtrack - Leaving Port *Film Version").

As The Floating Palace was slowly pushed away from the dock, Sofia, Lucinda, Dorrie, and Candice raced out onto the deck, happily waving to those on the dock. It was an exciting scene. Whenever The Floating Palace left Evermore Landing, everybody from Evermore Landing came out to wish the ship well.

"Goodbye, goodbye," Sofia happily called out.

"See you when we return," Lucinda cheerfully added.

"Goodbye," Dorrie and Candice called out with a smile.

"Thank you for seeing us off," Sofia added as she continued to wave.

The Floating Palace continued to be pushed away from the dock. In a few moments, the engines of The Floating Palace kicked on, and The Floating Palace started traveling away from Evermore Landing. People on the dock continued to wave, as Sofia, Lucinda, Dorrie, and Candice waved back. It was a very happy scene for everybody involved as The Floating Palace starting moving away.

"Goodbye, everyone," Sofia happily waved.

"Safe journey, ladies," a man cheerfully called out from the dock.

"Thank you," Lucinda acknowledged with a smile.

At one point, The Floating Palace passed by a small sailboat on its way out of port. Those on the sailboat happily waved at The Floating Palace.

"Goodbye, goodbye," Sofia cheerfully called out.

"Have a safe trip," those on the sailboat wished Sofia.

The Floating Palace continued on its way, as those on the dock continued to wave and cheer. In a few minutes, The Floating Palace had left port, and Sofia, Lucinda, Dorrie, and Candice walked inside the ship. As they walked into the grand sitting area of the ship, they heard a cough come from the direction of an overstuffed chair.

"Hello?" Sofia called out.

A white skinned 27-year-old woman rose from the chair, and faced Sofia, Lucinda, Dorrie, and Candice.

"Lydia!" Sofia exclaimed in glee as she raced over and hugged her older biological sister.

"Surprise," Lydia smiled. "I'm going to Avalor to attend the workshops as well. I thought I'd hitch a ride with you guys."

"It's good to see you, Lydia," Sofia smiled back, before turning serious. "But, you're pregnant. Is it wise for you to be traveling?"

"I'm only one month pregnant," Lydia reassured Sofia. "It's safe for me to travel. Do you really think I'd miss seeing my four favorite girls attending the workshops in Avalor? Besides, I'm the royal sorceress of Lacorinth. It's my duty to attend."

"It will be wonderful having you along," Lucinda smiled at Lydia.

"And it will be wonderful being with my sisters," Lydia happily pointed out to Lucinda and Sofia, before turning to Dorrie and Candice. "It will also be wonderful being with the two of you. The House of Cosmarune has two fine representatives here."

Dorrie and Candice smiled at Lydia's praise.

"I'm so proud of the four of you," Lydia said as she looked at Sofia, Lucinda, Dorrie, and Candice. "You've come so far in the past few years."

At that moment, a male servant walked into the grand sitting area of the ship, and started serving soft drinks to Lydia, Sofia, Lucinda, Dorrie, and Candice. The five girls then sat down, and had a pleasant conversation.

Meanwhile, in Avalor, Ash Delgado, and Lovisa, walked together in an uninhabited area of Avalor.

"I'm a bit uneasy," Lovisa admitted. "Having La Llorona prey on Princess Isabel at a time where all kinds of sorcerers and sorceresses are around is risky. I would have preferred a quieter setting."

"Having this kind of activity at this time will be to our advantage," Ash said in a reassuring voice. "Everybody will be so busy at the workshops that by the time anybody notices that Princess Isabel is gone, it will be too late."

"I approve," Lovisa acknowledged with an evil grin. "Let's get the ball rolling on this."

January 31, 1870

At sea, it was early Monday morning. The Floating Palace was approaching Avalor. In her cabin aboard The Floating Palace, Candice was asleep. As she slept, Candice had a dream.

In the dream, Dorrie, Candice, Sofia, and Lucinda were walking behind Enchancia Castle when they encountered Gwen, Wallace, nine-year-old Timothy, nineteen-year-old Amy, and seventeen-year-old Jade. In the dream, Sofia saw that Jade was entranced by a mysterious sword that was set into a pedestal.

"Jade? Jade?" Sofia asked, seeing Jade in a trance-type state.

Before anybody knew it, Jade reached down and pulled the sword from the pedestal as a male guard watched in shock. "Stop right there, Missy!" the guard called out.

"Missy! Don't tell me she's here!" Candice exclaimed, taken off guard.

"No, Candice," Dorrie spoke up. "Missy is just another word for young lady."

"I knew that," Candice acknowledged, embarrassed.

"Jade is no more!" Jade called out as she held up the sword. "I am Warrior Princess Jadyn of the Isle of Mermaids! And this sword was passed to me by my grandfather, King Andris! He entrusts me with this sword!"

Aboard The Floating Palace, a bell started loudly ringing on deck, waking Candice up from her dream.

"Weird dream," Candice thought to herself. "Perhaps something from the future?"

At that moment, a knock came from Candice's door.

"Come in," Candice invited.

The door opened, and in walked a male servant.

"Excuse me, Lady Candice," the servant apologized. "We're approaching the capital city of Avalor."

"Thank you," Candice acknowledged. "I'll be up on deck shortly."

"Very good, my lady," the servant said as he left Candice's cabin.

On the docks of the capital city of Avalor, 24-year-old Elena, and 22-year-old Naomi watched The Floating Palace come in. The sun was just coming up, and The Floating Palace was coming in as part of the sunrise.

"Wow!" Elena exclaimed in awe. "That's one impressive ship!"

"You should see it on the inside," Naomi winked at Elena.

"You've been inside?" Elena wanted to know, fascinated.

"I was given a tour when I visited Enchancia," Naomi revealed. "It's really quite regal inside."

"I can imagine," Elena acknowledged, stopping to smile at Naomi.

"What?" Naomi asked, curious.

"I'm happy to have you back," Elena happily said to Naomi. "I've missed you."

"And I've missed you," Naomi happily responded. "The important thing is that I'm back to stay."

At that moment, The Floating Palace pulled up to the dock where Elena and Naomi were standing.

"Gabe," Elena called out to the 25-year-old Captain of the guard. "Honor guard."

Gabe brought up eight members of the palace guard, which included 25-year-old Antonia Baeo who had become the first woman member of the palace guard. The eight guards, along with Gabe, stood at attention. At that same moment, Armando (the royal steward of Avalor) walked up.

"Queen Lydia, royal sorceress of Lacorinth. Princess Sofia and Princess Lucinda, the royal sorceresses of Enchancia," Armando announced. "Lady Dorrie and Lady Candice, the sorceresses-in-waiting of Enchancia."

Gabe and the honor guard saluted as Lydia, Sofia, Lucinda, Dorrie, and Candice walked off of The Floating Palace. At that same moment, 23-year-old Mateo ran up with his fourteen-year-old apprentice, Olivia.

"Sorry we're late, Elena," Mateo apologized, before turning to Lydia, Sofia, Lucinda, Dorrie, and Candice. "As royal wizard of Avalor, it is my honor to welcome the five of you to the Avalor workshops."

"Thank you, sir," Lydia acknowledged. "The five of us are honored to be here."

"Lydia," Elena happily greeted as the two hugged. "It's wonderful to see you again."

"And you, Elena," Lydia smiled.

"Elena!" Sofia happily called out.

"Sofia!" Elena smiled. "You and Lucinda have become two fine young ladies."

As Elena, Lydia, Sofia, and Lucinda talked, Dorrie and Candice walked up to Olivia.

"How's our favorite Avalorian apprentice doing?" Dorrie smiled at Olivia.

"I still have a lot to learn, but I'm getting there," Olivia smiled back. "Thanks to Mateo, I got an invitation to the workshops."

"That's wonderful news, Olivia," Candice happily acknowledged.

As everybody talked on the dock, Ash watched from a secluded spot high up on one of the hills of the city.

"It begins," Ash thought to herself with a wicked look in her eyes.

Later that morning

The workshops were now in full swing. Inside the royal palace of Avalor, sixteen-year-old Princess Isabel was in her workshop working on one of her inventions. As she worked, Isabel felt a presence in the workshop. Isabel looked up to see a woman with dark hair, gray skin, and orange eyes looking at her. Before Isabel could respond, the woman put Isabel under a hypnotic spell. "Go to the river," the woman commanded.

As Isabel, under the spell, walked away from the palace, Isabel was spotted by a male palace guard.

"Princess Isabel?" the guard asked. "Are you all right?"

Isabel didn't respond, but just kept walking.

"Princess Isabel!" the guard called out in alarm, before turning to another male guard nearby. "Get Queen Elena! Something is wrong with Princess Isabel!"

A few minutes later, at an outdoor workshop, the male guard sent to find Elena arrived.

"Queen Elena!" the guard reported. "Princess Isabel is under some kind of trance. She's walking toward the river!"

"Oh my God!" Elena exclaimed in horror as she turned to Naomi. "We have to stop her!"

"I can give you a quick way of getting there," Candice announced as she stepped forward, concentrated, and turned into a giant white dragon. "Elena, Naomi - get on my back."

Elena and Naomi quickly climbed on Candice's back, as Candice took flight.

"Everybody," Sofia raised her voice. "We have to help."

As Sofia, Lucinda, Dorrie, and other sorcerers and sorceresses started to run toward the river, their path was suddenly blocked by Lovisa and a number of her witches.

"Nobody is going anywhere!" Lovisa said with an evil grin. "I'll have my revenge for some stinking Avalorian soldier shooting me in the shoulder."

"We'll see about that!" Wu-Chang, the imperial sorcerer of Weiling, scoffed as he raised his wand. "Repulsia!"

One of Lovisa's witches was hit by Wu-Chang's blast, and fell to the ground. At that same moment, the sorcerers and sorceresses gathered started firing on Lovisa and her witches. As Lovisa and company took cover, they returned fire. A magical fire fight was now underway.

"Lucinda," Sofia instructed. "Magiblade."

"With you, Sof," Lucinda acknowledged.

Sofia and Lucinda raised their wands, and a steady sword-like beam of energy rose from their wands. Sofia and Lucinda raced toward Lovisa and her witches, using their wands to deflect magical blasts hurled at them by Lovisa and company. Other sorcerers and sorceresses raced up to Sofia and Lucinda, joining them in the fight. Before long, the opposing forces split up into small groups, with each group fiercely fighting each other. At one point, Dorrie and Lovisa faced each other.

"Well, well, well," Lovisa sneered. "Where's your sister?"

"None of your business, swamp hag!" Dorrie spat.

"Well, I'd rather fight you," Lovisa mocked. "You're a much easier opponent."

"You think so, huh?" Dorrie laughed. "I am vengeance. If you want something salty and sweet, with no strength, I am not the girl for you. I'll spit in your face!"

Dorrie concentrated, and changed into her werewolf form. Dorrie then held out her hand, and her Werewolf Staff magically appeared in her hand. Dorrie pointed her staff at Lovisa, and shouted "moonbeam!"

A dark blue magical beam shot from Dorrie's staff, throwing Lovisa to the ground. Dorrie then lunged at Lovisa, clawing at Lovisa with her werewolf claws.

As the fighting intensified, Mateo, Lydia, and a large group of sorcerers and sorceresses came on the scene. The group started firing their wands on Lovisa's witches, as Mateo joined in using his tamborita. In a few moments, Lovisa's witches fled upon seeing reinforcements arrive. Lydia then ran over to where Dorrie had Lovisa pinned. Lovisa was somewhat bloodied, but alive.

"Kill me, girl!" Lovisa demanded.

"What? And let you off that easy? No way. You're under arrest!" Dorrie barked.

Some guards raced up, and grabbed Lovisa.

"Take her to the detention center," Mateo ordered. "And you might want to have a doctor look her over."

"Isabel is under some kind of trance," Dorrie reported as Gabe (Captain of the guard) raced up. "She's heading toward the river. Candice, Elena, and Naomi went after her."

"We've better get over there," Gabe suggested to Mateo.

At the river, Candice had landed with Elena and Naomi. To Elena's horror, she saw a strange woman standing next to Isabel. The woman motioned to Isabel, and Isabel then dove into the water.

"No!" Elena cried out in panic.

The woman turned around to face Elena. The woman had a gray face, and bright orange eyes. The woman was La Llorona. Elena tried to race toward the river to save Isabel, but was blocked by La Llorona. Naomi dove into the water, as Candice took flight.

"Why are you doing this?" Elena asked La Llorona.

"Because it's what I do," La Llorona laughed.

"You won't be doing it any longer!" Elena barked as she pulled out her scepter, and pointed it at La Llorona. "Blaze!"

A beam of magical energy shot from Elena's scepter, as La Llorona quickly avoided it.

"You'll have to do better than that, young queen," La Llorona mocked.

Elena lunged at La Llorona, only to have La Llorona use some kind of mind power to send Elena falling backward. As La Llorona laughed in victory, she felt steel enter her side. The steel was Gabe's sword, which Gabe had just stabbed La Llorona with. At that same moment, Mateo chanted a magical spell, which caused La Llorona to vanish into thin air.

"What just happened?" Elena asked Mateo.

"I magically banished that creature from Avalor," Mateo explained. "If she tries to return, she'll be turned to stone. And she knows that."

"Good work," Elena praised. "We have to save Isa! She's in the river!"

Elena, Mateo, and Gabe ran in the direction the river was flowing. Down the river, Naomi was catching up with Isabel, as Candice flew overhead. In a few moments, Naomi caught up with Isabel, and dragged Isabel out of the water. Candice landed, and changed back into human form.

"Is she all right?" Candice asked Naomi, concerned.

"She's not breathing!" Naomi reported about the unconscious Isabel.

Naomi put her mouth over Isabel's mouth, and started breathing into Isabel's mouth. In a few moments, Isabel started spitting up water, and came around.

"Thank God!" Candice thought to herself, relieved.

"What happened?" Isabel asked in a weak voice. "All I remember was some strange woman taking over my mind."

"It's okay, now," Naomi reassured Isabel. "You're safe."

Isabel slowly sat up, as Naomi held Isabel. In a few moments, Isabel leaned into Naomi, as Naomi put her arms around Isabel to both comfort and warm Isabel.

At that moment, Elena, Mateo, and Gabe ran up. Elena quickly knelt down, and hugged Isabel.

"Oh, Isa!" Elena exclaimed in relief. "I thought I had lost you!"

Elena gently kissed Isabel on the forehead, and Isabel returned the gesture by kissing Elena on the cheek. Mateo, Gabe, Naomi, and Candice smiled at the touching scene. After a while, the six made their way back to the royal palace of Avalor. As they approached the palace, Isabel took Elena, Mateo, Gabe, Naomi, and Candice aside.

"Gracias (thank you), Elena," Isabel smiled as she and Elena hugged.

"De nada (you're welcome), Isa," Elena smiled back.

"Gracias," Isabel gratefully said to Mateo as she gently kissed him on the cheek.

"De nada," Mateo acknowledged with a smile.

"Gracias," Isabel said to Gabe, grateful, as she kissed him on the cheek.

"De nada," Gabe happily acknowledged.

"Thank you," Isabel smiled at Candice as the two hugged.

"You're welcome," Candice smiled back.

Isabel looked at Naomi for the longest time. Isabel then hugged Naomi.

"Thank you for saving me," Isabel gratefully said to Naomi. "I'm glad you're my friend."

Naomi's heart melted as she held Isabel close, even giving Isabel a kiss on the forehead.

"That's what good friends do," Naomi smiled. "Good friends watch out and protect those they love."

Elena, Mateo, Gabe, and Candice walked over to where Isabel and Naomi were standing, and the six then joined in a group hug. Everything was right with the world.

That night

At the detention center in the capital city of Avalor, Lovisa was in her cell recovering from her battle with Dorrie. A male guard then approached the cell door.

"You have a visitor," the guard announced.

"I'm not interested in seeing anybody!" Lovisa snapped at the guard with a filthy look.

"Oh, you'll see me no matter what," a woman's voice came from outside the cell.

Lovisa looked to see none other than the royal sorceress of Cinnibar, Hematite, approach.

"What brings you here, Hematite?" Lovisa asked in a mocking tone of voice.

"Well, I was here for the magical workshops," Hematite explained. "Then you were captured, Queen Scarlett found out, and I'm here to escort you to prison as a wanted magical criminal."

"So, I'm going to Azkaban," Lovisa quietly acknowledged.

"Oh, no such luck for you, Lovisa," Hematite smiled in delight. "You're going to Cinnibar where you'll be held in the Crimson Force prison."

"No!" Lovisa exclaimed in shock. "Any place but there!"

"It's already been decided," Hematite pointed out. "Cinnibar has an extradition treaty with Avalor. We'll be leaving for Cinnibar as soon as a ship full of guards arrives."

Lovisa banged the bars of the cell in anger as Hematite left. Meanwhile, in the royal palace of Avalor, Isabel was resting in her bedroom with Elena at her side.

"How are you feeling, Isa?" Elena gently asked.

"A bit weak, but okay," Isabel answered, before continuing. "Elena. I have something I need to tell you."

"What, Isa?" Elena wanted to know, curious.

"When I was in the water ... dying ... I saw Mami and Papi," Isabel revealed. "We had a conversation where I said I missed them, and they said they missed me. I was going to stay with them, but I heard you calling out for me. I knew I couldn't leave you alone, so I returned."

"And I'm so happy you did," Elena smiled as she hugged Isabel. Elena then started slowly singing in a gentle voice. "Things may be different now. Since I became Queen. But one thing will never change. You mean more than all the rest. And even though I must rule. I promise you from the start. I'll always make time for you. Because you are in my heart."

"Sister, sister, sister time. You can put your doubts away. Sister, sister, sister time. By your side I'll always stay. Sister, sister, sister time. Nothing will stand in the way. Of sister, sister, sister time. It's the best part of my day."

(Isabel) "Elena?" (Elena) "I'll be right here." (Isabel) "Elena?" (Elena) "I'll stay by your side." (Isabel) "Elena?" (Elena) "And if you don't mind. We'll have some sister time."

(Elena and Isabel) "Sister, sister, sister time. Off we go without delay. Sister, sister, sister time. Our adventure's under way. Sister, sister, sister time. Nothing will stand in our way. Sister, sister, sister time. You're the best part of my day."

(Elena and Isabel) "Sister, sister, sister time. Sister, sister, sister time. Sister, sister, sister time! By your side I'll always stay."

As Elena and Isabel again hugged each other, two ghosts watched from above - King Raul and Queen Lucia, who smiled at the touching scene. Their daughters had a close relationship, and Raul and Lucia couldn't have been happier.

"I have an idea," Elena announced to Isabel. "I'll stay with you for the night, and we can have a sleepover like we use to have when we were younger. How would you like that?"

"I'd love that, Elena!" Isabel cheerfully responded.

Elena climbed into Isabel's bed, and gently cradled Isabel as Isabel snuggled into Elena's embrace.

"Buenas noches (good night), Isa," Elena smiled as she gently kissed Isabel on the cheek. "Te amo (I love you)".

"Yo tambien te amo (I love you, too)," Isabel smiled back as she gently kissed Elena on the cheek.

Before long, the two fell asleep in each others arms. Everything was right with the world.

Downstairs, in the large sitting room of the palace, a small gathering was taking place - Sofia, Lucinda, Dorrie, Candice, Lydia, along with Princess Rebeca of Galonia, Princess Valentina of Paraiso, and Princess Chloe of Norberg. Rebeca, Valentina, and Chloe were close friends of Elena's, and were visiting. Next to the sitting room was a room which featured a large table filled with food.

At one point, while everybody else talked, Candice got up and made her way to the food table. Once out of sight, she reached into her skirt pocket, pulled out a letter from Prince Everett of Ornburgh, and read it.

My dearest Candice.

I thought I would write you during your visit to Avalor. I smile with happiness thinking of you attending the magical workshops there. You are very magically gifted, and that is one of the things I love about you ... along with your beauty both inside and out.

I dream of your return to Enchancia, and being able to visit you. I look forward to walking with you in the Enchancia Castle gardens, and visiting the nearby villages with you. I feel so alive when I am with you.

Until we see each other again.

With my deepest love.

Your Everett.

Candice sighed with joy upon reading the letter. As she held the letter, Princess Chloe walked up behind Candice.

"Sorry to disturb you," Chloe apologized. "I've obviously interrupted a personal moment."

"That's quite all right, Princess Chloe," Candice smiled. "I was finished reading it."

"From somebody you love?" Chloe asked, curious. "Oh! But I shouldn't be poking my nose into your personal business."

"Think nothing of it," Candice said in a reassuring voice. "It's not like my relationship with Prince Everett of Ornburgh is a state secret. We're to be married when we're eighteen."

"How wonderful!" Chloe exclaimed in happiness. "You must love each other very much."

"We do," Candice smiled.

At that moment, Chloe bumped into a bowl on the table, sending it crashing to the floor, breaking in the process.

"Oh, my!" Chloe cried out.

"Not to worry," Candice said as she pulled out her wand. "This is easily fixed."

Candice pointed her wand at the broken bowl, and concentrated. In a few moments, the bowl magically repaired itself, and returned to the table with its contents intact. Chloe stepped back in fright.

"Did I do something?" Candice asked, taken off guard.

"I'm sorry," Chloe apologized. "I've always been uncomfortable around magic. When I was eight, a wizard messed up a spell, and she turned us all into cupcakes."

"I'm so very sorry," Candice said in a gentle voice. "I can see where that would put you off magic. I would, however, like to assure you that not all of us are second rate hacks. If you'll let me, I'd like to show you how magic is suppose to be done."

"I don't know," Chloe said, hesitant.

"I understand," Candice gently acknowledged. "Perhaps another time ... when you're ready."

"Wait," Chloe quietly started. "I need to get over being afraid of magic."

"I wouldn't want to rush you," Candice offered.

"No, my mind is made up," Chloe stated.

"Okay," Candice acknowledged. "How about I show you something I can do. It wouldn't directly affect you, but it would show you something about magic."

"I'd like that," Chloe accepted. "What did you have in mind?"

"My transformation ability," Candice explained. "I'll change into my White Maleficent form."

"I've heard of that," Chloe acknowledged. "Go ahead, please."

Candice concentrated, and in a few moments transformed into her White Maleficent form, complete with horns coming out of her forehead.

"Oh, my!" Chloe exclaimed with a mix of fear and awe.

"Too much, huh?" Candice asked, concerned.

"It's not you, it's me," Chloe explained. "I've got to admit, however ... that's impressive. May I?"

"May you what?" Candice asked, curious.

"May I touch your horns?" Chloe requested.

"Of course," Candice smiled. "Go ahead."

Chloe walked over, and carefully touched Candice's horns. They were smooth to the touch, almost like polished ivory.

"Their so smooth," Chloe remarked as Dorrie, Sofia, Lucinda, Lydia, Rebeca, and Valentina walked in.

"So, what's this?" Lydia asked, curious.

"Lady Candice was showing me her transformation skill," Chloe answered.

"I thought you were afraid of magic?" Rebeca asked Chloe.

"I was," Chloe revealed. "Not so much now."

"That's good to hear," Valentina smiled.

"I have an idea," Sofia announced. "We could go back out into the sitting room, and Lydia, Lucinda, Dorrie, Candice, and I could give you a magic show. Nothing too strong mind you, just some simple stuff."

"Count me in!" Chloe said, pleased.

Everybody walked back into the sitting room, and Sofia, Lydia, Lucinda, Dorrie, and Candice performed some simple magic tricks for Chloe, Rebeca, and Valentina. It turned into a wonderful night that would be remembered for a long time.

February 3, 1870

It was an early Thursday morning in the capital city of Avalor. At the detention center in the city, Lovisa slept in her cell when she was awoken by running coming down the corridor. Lovisa looked out through the bars of her cell door to see two of her witches approaching.

"Lovisa," one of the witches announced. "We're here to get you out."

"Well, it's about time!" Lovisa exclaimed, eagerly awaiting her release.

"I'm an expert lock picker," one of the two witches announced as she started opening the lock on the cell door, as the other witch stood next to her. Just as the witch was being successful in opening the lock, a beam of magical energy shot from the cell door, turning the two witches to stone.

"What is going on here?!" Lovisa shouted, taken off guard.

"Did you think we'd just put you in any old cell?" a woman's voice came from the shadows.

Lovisa looked up to see Elena approaching, followed by Mateo, Sofia, and Lucinda.

"What kind of game is this?!" Lovisa barked.

"I can assure you, this is no game," Mateo countered. "This is a special high security cell that is locked using special keys that have an enchantment. If someone tries to use any other method to unlock it, the person or persons get turned to stone."

"Now that we have you, we're not going to let you escape," Sofia proclaimed.

"The ISS Escadron Pourpre is on its way from Cinnibar to pick you up as we speak," Elena revealed.

"Lucy," Sofia started as she turned toward Lucinda. "Did Dorrie and Candice leave?"

"They left a short while ago aboard jagwins, Sof," Lucinda reported. "They should be arriving at the ISS Escadron Pourpre anytime now."

"Good," Sofia responded. "The sooner we get Lovisa to Cinnibar, the better."

At that same moment, Dorrie (riding Migs) and Candice (riding Skylar) were approaching the ISS Escadron Pourpre.

"There it is!" Dorrie pointed out.

"Good," Candice acknowledged. "We can report on the current situation, and lead them into the harbor."

"Migs," Dorrie started. "Take us down, please."

"You got it, Lady Dorrie," Migs responded as he and Skylar flew downward toward the ISS Escadron Pourpre.

As they were about to land, Dorrie caught sight of two additional ships in the distance. She recognized the ships as the HMS Repulse from Enchancia, and the HMS Gideon from Lacorinth - both broom carriers like the ISS Escadron Pourpre. In a few moments, Dorrie and Migs, and Candice and Skylar, landed on the deck of the Escadron Pourpre.

"Welcome aboard Lady Dorrie, Lady Candice," a male officer greeted. "We were told to expect you."

"What are the Repulse and the Gideon doing here?" Dorrie asked, curious.

"The Gideon will be taking Queen Lydia back to Lacorinth," the officer reported. "Under the circumstances, King Graham thought it best that Queen Lydia have a security escort home. Meanwhile, the Repulse will be escorting The Floating Palace back to Enchancia. King Roland thought it would be best if you, Lady Candice, Princess Sofia, Princess Lucinda, and The Floating Palace had a security escort back home."

"Wise precautions," Candice agreed.

"If the two of you and your jaguins will follow me, we'll go below decks, and you can tell us the current situation in Avalor," the officer suggested. "We'll also get you some breakfast while we're at it."

"Now you're talking my language," Skylar smiled.

"Must you always think with your stomach?" Migs asked Skylar.

"Yes," Skylar grinned, as Candice smiled at the scene.

"We'll also need to inspect your high security cell," Dorrie said to the officer.

"The cell is fully functional," the officer reassured Dorrie. "You may inspect it after breakfast."

"Very good," Dorrie acknowledged.

Later that morning, the Escadron Pourpre, the Gideon, and the Repulse arrived at the capital city of Avalor where Elena, Mateo, Lydia, Sofia, and Lucinda were waiting on a dock. At that same moment, Dorrie and Candice flew in on Migs and Skylar.

"Why are there three broom carriers?" Elena asked Dorrie and Candice.

"The Escadron Pourpre will take Hematite and Lovisa to Cinnibar," Dorrie explained. "The Gideon will transport Queen Lydia back to Lacorinth. And the Repulse will escort me, Candice, Sofia, Lucinda, and The Floating Palace back to Enchancia. With what has happened here in Avalor, it was decided to be extra careful."

"Good," Elena approved, as Mateo motioned a group of male guards to come over. With the guards were Hematite, along with Lovisa.

"Is the high security cell aboard the Escadron Pourpre ready?" Hematite asked Dorrie and Candice.

"Yes," Candice answered. "Its ready for our guest."

"Ha, Ha," Lovisa scoffed. "Very funny."

"Move!" Hematite ordered Lovisa as the two boarded the Escadron Pourpre.

"Well, I guess I'm off," Lydia smiled as she hugged Sofia and Lucinda, before turning to Dorrie and Candice. "And I'll see the two of you, and your mother, next month when you come to Lacorinth for my monthly prenatal exam."

"See you then," Dorrie smiled as Lydia boarded the Gideon.

As the guards and Mateo departed, Elena turned to Sofia, Lucinda, Dorrie, and Candice.

"It's been good seeing the four of you again," Elena smiled. "Safe journey."

"Thank you, Elena," Sofia smiled back as the two hugged. "Until we meet again."

In a few moments, Sofia, Lucinda, Dorrie, and Candice walked over to The Floating Palace, and boarded the ship. The Floating Palace then fired up its engines, and sailed away from the capital city of Avalor with the Repulse following close behind.

Aboard The Floating Palace, a male servant walked up to where Sofia, Lucinda, Dorrie, and Candice were sitting.

"The latest newspapers from the Enchancia Castle area, thanks to those on the HMS Repulse," the servant announced as he put the newspapers down on a table. Sofia picked up one, and started reading it.

"Well, looks like the name for our village has finally been finalized," Sofia announced.

"It took long enough," Lucinda acknowledged. "Some people have been calling it Dunwitty, and others have been calling it Dunwiddie."

"So, what's been decided upon?" Candice asked, curious.

"A village vote was held," Sofia revealed as she read a newspaper article. "The vast majority of voters decided upon Dunwiddie."

"Well then, it's official," Dorrie acknowledged. "The Village of Dunwiddie."

Lucinda, Dorrie, and Candice then each picked up a newspaper, and started reading as The Floating Palace and the HMS Repulse made their way back to Enchancia.

February 6, 1870

It was a Sunday morning in the capital city of Cinnibar. The ISS Escadron Pourpre had just arrived back at Cinnibar, and Hematite and a group of guards were escorting Lovisa to the Crimson Force prison. As they approached the entrance to the prison, they noticed Queen Scarlett and Princess Faith waiting for them. Scarlett stepped forward, and approached Lovisa.

"Well, we finally bagged you," Scarlett boasted.

Lovisa, in a fit of anger, spat in Scarlett's face.

"You filthy pig!" Faith yelled at Lovisa as Faith brought out her wand.

"It's okay," Scarlett reassured Faith as a guard handed Scarlett a handkerchief. "Lovisa has admitted defeat."

"You wish!" Lovisa scowled. "I will break out of here eventually."

"You're more than welcome to try," Scarlett mocked. "It won't do you any good, but I suppose you'll need a hobby while you're here."

As Faith, Hematite, and the guards led Lovisa into the prison, Lovisa struggled all of the way, before turning to look back at Scarlett.

"You haven't heard the last of me!" Lovisa yelled at the top of her lungs.

"Whatever," Scarlett said to herself as she walked away.

Meanwhile, in a forest clearing far away from Cinnibar, what was left of Lovisa's witches were gathered. A white skinned witch by the name of Alcina stepped forward.

"Sisters," Alcina started, "Lovisa has been captured and taken to Cinnibar. She'll be imprisoned in the Crimson Force prison. I've been told its been given every manor of protection possible."

"So, Lovisa is gone, then," a witch pondered.

"I'm afraid so," Alcina acknowledged.

"What about Ash Delgado?" another witch asked.

"Ash Delgado probably high tailed it at the first sign of trouble," Alcina theorized. "Damned malvagos. You can't trust a one of them."

"What do we do now, Alcina?" still another witch wanted to know.

"We bide our time," Alcina answered. "But know this - we will get even sooner or later. We'll attack Enchancia Castle and that nearby Village of Dunwiddie."

"But, Alcina," a short witch spoke up. "No witch who practices the dark arts is able to enter Dunwiddie. There's some force that keeps us away. Every time one of us tries, we're driven away by an unnatural sense of fear."

"I've felt that myself," Alcina revealed. "We'll need to find a non-witch who is sympathetic to our cause, and send that person into Dunwiddie to investigate. Perhaps it is some kind of spell, or magical device, that produces that sense of fear."

"And what do we do in the here and now?" the short witch inquired.

"We lay low," Alcina instructed. "Let the outside world think we've disbanded. When the time is right, we strike."

Later that afternoon, at Enchancia Castle, Candice and Everett were walking together in the castle gardens behind the castle. Everett had dropped by to see Candice, while Frederick had dropped by to see Dorrie. As Frederick and Dorrie enjoyed walking together elsewhere in the gardens, Everett and Candice walked together, holding hands. At one point, the two came across a pedestal with a sword stuck into it. Candice looked around, and saw Amber walking a short distance away.

"Amber," Candice called out. "A moment, please."

"What may I do for you?" Amber asked as she walked over.

"When did we get this?" Candice wanted to know, pointing at the pedestal.

"Oh," Amber smiled. "We got that when you were gone. It's a gift from Vega. She gave it to us as a sign of deep friendship between The Mystic Isles and Enchancia. According to legend, it has something to do with the history of The Mystic Isles."

"Oh, boy!" Candice said, taken off guard, suddenly remembering the dream she had the week before.

(End of Chapter 47).

Behind the scenes

In this edition of "Behind the scenes, we look at the legend of La Llorona.

La Llorona, Spanish for the Weeping Woman, stems from popular Latin American folklore.

According to popular versions of the tale, the Weeping Woman was once a beautiful maiden named Maria. She married a nobleman and had two sons. Her husband, a traveler, was rarely home and his feelings for Maria began to dull during his time away. But the husband still loved his sons, and gave them all of the attention he denied Maria whenever he returned. When Maria caught her husband in town with a younger woman, she took her two sons to the Santa Fe River and drowned them. Days later Maria was found dead on the riverbank, a result of unknown circumstances. At the gates of Heaven, Maria's spirit was denied entry until she found the souls of her two sons. And thus she was cursed to wander the Earth looking to reclaim their souls. Dressed in a white gown and wailing for her children, La Llorona kidnaps wandering children at night, mistaking them for her own, and drowns them in the hopes of recovering souls that will permit her entry into Heaven.

It is said that if you hear her crying, you are to run the opposite way. Many parents in Latin America use the tale to scare their children from staying out too late.
