Chapter 48: Festivities and Surprises

February 6, 1870

At Enchancia Castle, Candice and Everett were walking together in the castle gardens behind the castle. Everett had dropped by to see Candice, while Frederick had dropped by to see Dorrie. As Frederick and Dorrie enjoyed walking together elsewhere in the gardens, Everett and Candice walked together, holding hands. At one point, the two came across a pedestal with a sword stuck into it. Candice looked around, and saw Amber walking a short distance away.

"Amber," Candice called out. "A moment, please."

"What may I do for you?" Amber asked as she walked over.

"When did we get this?" Candice wanted to know, pointing at the pedestal.

"Oh," Amber smiled. "We got that when you were gone. It's a gift from Vega. She gave it to us as a sign of deep friendship between The Mystic Isles and Enchancia. According to legend, it has something to do with the history of The Mystic Isles."

"Oh, boy!" Candice said, taken off guard, suddenly remembering the dream she had the week before.

"Candice?" Amber asked, concerned.

"Sorry, Amber," Candice apologized. "I just didn't expect Vega to give us such an impressive gift."

Candice was covering up the fact that she had a dream about future events. Candice didn't want to alarm Amber or Everett. Candice then decided to change the subject.

"So, how did Rachel's birthday party go?" Candice wanted to know.

"Oh, it went wonderfully," Amber smiled. "She understood why you, Dorrie, Sofia, and Lucinda weren't there. Magical workshops don't come along that often. She did, however, ask me to tell the four of you to fill her in. She wants to hear everything."

"Well, the next time we see her at Hexley Hall, we'll be sure to fill her in," Candice happily complied. "Meanwhile, tell me about the party."

"Of course," Amber agreed as she thought back to that day.

Thinking back to January 30, 1870

It was a Sunday afternoon at Enchancia Castle. In the castle ballroom, a now eighteen-year-old Rachel Harris walked into the ballroom, which was empty ... or so it seemed.

"Hello," Rachel called out. "Is anybody here?"

Suddenly, balloons appeared out of nowhere, and started rising toward the ceiling of the ballroom. At that same moment, magical fireworks started going off around Rachel, as a chorus of invisible voices started singing.

"Would be fun to make the most of making everyone a friend. Then someone is always hosting celebrations to attend."

"Singing cheering and toasting. Year round Happy Birthday."

"Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to me. Happy birthday to my friends we are all family (once again!)."

"Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to me. Happy birthday to my friends we are all family. Happy birthday to my friends we are all family."

Suddenly, a large group of Rachel's friends appeared out of thin air, and happily said "Happy Birthday!"

"Oh, wow!" Rachel exclaimed in awe.

At that same moment, sixteen-year-old Abby Murphy, and twelve-year-old Calista, stepped forward.

"Happy Birthday, Rachel," Abby smiled. "Calista and I have been working the past few days to get this just right."

"We wanted to give you an ever so wonderful birthday," Calista happily added.

"And it is," Rachel agreed with a happy smile.

"There's more," Calista announced as she and Abby raised their wands, and pointed them at one end of the ballroom. Tables full of food, drink, and presents appeared out of thin air, along with seventeen-year-old Amber.

"Happy Birthday, Rachel," Amber smiled. "Welcome to your eighteenth birthday party."

"Calista and I took care of the magic," Abby announced. "But the real credit goes to Amber. She planned out this party in wonderful detail."

"Thank you, Amber," Rachel acknowledged, grateful.

"It's not everyday that one turns eighteen," Amber commented. "I wanted you to have something special to remember it by."

At that moment, sixteen-year-old Makayla, sixteen-year-old Holly, and Rachel's younger brother Noah walked up.

"Happy birthday, Rachel!" Makayla and Holly cheered.

"Happy birthday, Ray-Ray," Noah happily added.

As Amber smiled at the touching scene, sixteen-year-old Matilda Honey walked up.

"You've done an excellent job putting everything together, Amber," Matilda praised.

"Why thank you, Matilda," Amber acknowledged, pleased, before turning to everybody gathered. "There's plenty of food and drink available. Please help yourselves."

Everybody walked over to the tables, and happily helped themselves. Among those in attendance were Elizabeth West-Chadwick, Marie Perkins, Timothy O'Toole, Samantha "Sam" Cook, Molly, Nonya, Lisa Elodie, Lynn Greythorn, Indigo, Lily, Jade, Jade's cousin (Luna), Ruby, Adair Starwell, Valentina Androcasia, Elainna Marie Pearson, Elainna's cousin (Anniale), as well as Oona (in human form), James, and Desmond. A wonderful time was had by all.

Back to February 6, 1870

"Well, it sounds like it was a wonderful day," Candice smiled at Amber.

"It was," Amber happily agreed. "I should be letting you and Everett get back to your walk. See you two later."

"See you, Amber," Candice and Everett acknowledged as Amber walked off.

"So, Candice?" Everett started. "I take it you had another premonition?"

"How well you know me," Candice said with a smile.

"If I might ask, what did you see?" Everett asked, curious.

"Something about Jade and that sword and pedestal over there," Candice answered. "At some point, Jade somehow pulls out the sword, and claims to be some kind of warrior from the past."

"Interesting," Everett remarked, intrigued. "Any idea on when it will happen?"

"Not really," Candice admitted, nervous. "I'm never given a time frame for when such things happen. One day, they just happen."

Everett could see that Candice's premonition was causing her some concern. "I'm sure things will work out," Everett said in a reassuring voice. "Meanwhile, let's enjoy this time together. It's good to have you back from Avalor."

"And it's good to be back ... and here with you, Everett," Candice happily said as she and Everett hugged each other.

At that moment, sixteen-year-old Lucinda walked up.

"Sorry to interrupt such a lovely moment," Lucinda apologized. "There's refreshments available in the ballroom. I came out to tell everybody."

"Thank you, Lucinda," Everett happily acknowledged.

"Yes, thank you, Lucy," Candice added with a smile.

"You're welcome," Lucinda smiled back. "I'll inform the others out here, and meet you in the ballroom."

As Lucinda walked away, Everett gently took Candice's arm.

"Shall we go inside?" Everett asked Candice.

"That sounds good," Candice beamed.

Everett and Candice, happily walking arm in arm, made their way into the castle. As they walked in, they were met by Queen Miranda.

"It always makes me smile seeing the two of you, and Dorrie and Frederick, together," Miranda remarked in joy. "There's such a magical feeling in the air when you're together."

Candice and Everett smiled at each other, before turning back to Miranda.

"Thank you, Queen Miranda," Everett acknowledged as he bowed.

"You're most welcome, Everett," Miranda smiled, impressed by Everett's manners. Miranda then walked up to Candice. "Your Everett is a true gentleman. I see a bright future for the two of you."

"Thank you, ma'am," Candice happily acknowledged.

"If the two of you will go up to the ballroom, I'll meet you there when the others come in from outside," Miranda lovingly directed.

As Candice and Everett walked up to the ballroom, having a pleasant conversation as they walked, Miranda watched from a distance and smiled. It was a wonderful time to be alive.

April 8, 1870

It was a sunny Friday afternoon at Enchancia Castle. School had ended for the day, and everybody was gathered for a joint birthday party - a party for Sofia (who was now seventeen), and a party for Marie Perkins (who was now eleven). Both shared the same day for their birthday, and since both lived in Enchancia Castle, it had been decided a while back to have a joint party on that day.

In Sofia's room in the castle, Sofia was getting ready. With her were Clover, Whatnaught, Robin, Mia, and Hector (Hector being Sofia's Mexican spotted owl).

"Well, Sof," Clover smiled. "It's nice to be back, and just in time for your seventeenth birthday."

"And it's nice having you, Whatnaught, Robin, and Mia back," Sofia happily remarked.

"And it's nice having a new friend," Mia cheerfully spoke up, referring to Hector.

At that moment, a knock came at Sofia's door.

"Come in," Sofia invited.

The door opened, and in walked sixteen-year-old Lucinda who would turn seventeen on June 7th. Behind Lucinda was a white skinned sixteen-year-old girl with short brown hair and a ponytail.

"Happy Birthday, Sof!" Lucinda smiled as she hugged Sofia.

"Thank you, Lucy," Sofia happily acknowledged. "Who's your friend?"

"This is Princess Natasha of the Kingdom of Zoravia," Lucinda answered. "Natasha recently started going to Royal Prep, and the two of us hit it off immediately."

"Nice to meet you, Natasha," Sofia smiled.

"The pleasure is mine, Princess Sofia," Natasha smiled back.

"Please, just call me Sofia," Sofia suggested. "We're all friends here."

"Then Sofia it is," Natasha happily acknowledged.

At that moment, sixteen-year-old Dorrie walked in.

"Sofia," Dorrie smiled. "Time to get you ready for the party."

"Natasha and I should be getting down to the party," Lucinda announced. "We'll see the two of you down there."

"See you there," Sofia cheerfully responded as Lucinda and Natasha walked out of the room, and Dorrie started brushing Sofia's hair.

Outside, in back of the castle, the joint birthday party was in the final stages of being set up. Marie Perkins (now eleven) had just arrived, and was talking to some of the guests when seventeen-year-old Jade walked up.

"Happy Birthday, Marie," Jade smiled as she hugged Marie.

"Thank you, Jade," Marie smiled back as she returned Jade's hug.

"Where's Sofia?" Jade wanted to know.

"She's getting ready," Marie answered. "She'll be down shortly."

In a little while, Sofia arrived, followed by Dorrie.

"Jade!" Sofia smiled upon seeing her long time friend.

"Happy Birthday, Sofia!" Jade smiled back as she gave Sofia a warm hug.

"Thank you, Jade," Sofia acknowledged, pleased, when she looked to see two of her friends from Castlehaven approaching - sixteen-year-old Princess Nella, and sixteen-year-old Sir Garrett.

"Happy Birthday, Sofia," Nella smiled as she approached with Garrett.

"Thank you, Nella," Sofia smiled back.

"Happy Birthday, Princess Sofia," Garrett happily said as he took Sofia's hand, and gently kissed it.

"Thank you, Garrett," Sofia acknowledged, impressed. "You can just call me Sofia. No need for the princess stuff."

"Yes, Princess ... I mean, Sofia," Garrett corrected himself as he and Nella held hands.

"What's this?" Sofia asked, curious.

"Well," Nella started, "Garrett and I ... have become more than friends during the past few months."

"Oh! That's so wonderful!" Sofia exclaimed in glee.

"Thank you, Sofia," Garrett acknowledged, pleased. "Nella and I have a lot in common. And now, we have love as well."

Everybody standing nearby smiled at Garrett's touching show of affection toward Nella. Meanwhile, Dorrie and Candice were standing a short distance away when they noticed sixteen-year-old Abby, and sixteen-year-old Prince Mike from Stehurst, arrive. Abby and Mike were having a pleasant conversation. Then, Mike gently kissed Abby on the cheek as Abby smiled.

"Well, it looks like Nella and Garrett aren't the only ones who've turned a friendship into something more," Dorrie happily noticed.

"I think it's nice," Candice remarked with a smile. "I always thought Abby and Mike would make a good couple."

"Ladies," a male voice came from behind Dorrie and Candice.

Dorrie and Candice turned around to see seventeen-year-old Prince Frederick, and sixteen-year-old Prince Everett, standing there.

"Frederick!" Dorrie exclaimed, pleased.

"Everett," Candice smiled.

"We were invited to Sofia and Marie's birthday party," Frederick announced.

"We thought we'd keep our arrival a secret," Everett cheerfully added.

"We wanted to surprise the two of you," Frederick revealed.

"And a nice surprise it it," Dorrie smiled as she and Frederick hugged.

"Indeed," Candice happily added as she and Everett hugged.

"If I may have your attention," Baileywick announced as he walked up. "The birthday celebration will begin shortly. If everybody will go to where the castle gazebo is, we'll get started."

Everybody walked over to where the gazebo was, and the party started. Sofia and Marie had a wonderful time, opening birthday gifts and enjoying cake and soft drinks with their friends. A fine time was had by all.

A little while later, Dorrie, Frederick, Candice, Everett, Sofia, Lucinda, and Ruby were walking behind Enchancia Castle when they encountered Gwen, Wallace, nine-year-old Timothy, nineteen-year-old Amy, as well as Jade. As they walked, Jade caught sight of a mysterious sword that was set into a pedestal. Jade then went into a mysterious trance.

"Jade? Jade?" Sofia asked, concerned, seeing Jade in the trance-type state.

Before anybody knew it, Jade reached down and pulled the sword from the pedestal as a male guard watched in shock. "Stop right there, Missy!" the guard called out.

"Oh, my!" Candice exclaimed, taken off guard, before turning to Dorrie. "And yes, I know ... he's not talking about the Missy I know."

"I was just about to point that out," Dorrie confessed. "How did you know?"

"A hunch," Candice revealed.

"A hunch, huh?" Everett whispered to Candice. "This wouldn't happen to be that premonition you were telling me about?"

"Yes, it is," Candice whispered back. "And, I decided to change a bit of it now that it's playing out."

"Ah, I see," Everett whispered, impressed.

"Jade is no more!" Jade called out as she held up the sword. "I am Warrior Princess Jadyn of the Isle of Mermaids! And this sword was passed to me by my grandfather, King Andris! He entrusts me with this sword!"

As Jade held the sword in the air, Ruby ran up. "What do you think you are doing, Jade?!"

"Who is this Jade?" Jade responded. "I am Jadyn!"

"Snap out of it, girl!" Ruby demanded as she shook Jade. As Ruby touched Jade, a flash of memory went through Jade's mind.

"Ruby?" Sofia asked, concerned. "What's wrong?"

"That was strange, Sofia," Ruby started. "I had a weird flashback ... to the distant past. I was somebody named Countess Marina. Apparently, I was a trainer to this Jadyn person."

"Marina?" Jade asked Ruby. "Is that you, Marina?"

"Okay, I've seen some weird stuff in my time," Lucinda commented. "But, this goes right up there at the top of the list."

Soon, they saw a puff of red smoke appear and Queen Scarlett of Cinnibar came out from it, crossing her arms as she looked to see Jade. Scarlett then closed her eyes and used her telepathic abilities to see what was going on.

"Long time no see, Jadyn," Scarlett said, crossing her arms. "How did that little training with Countess Marina go for you?"

"Queen Scarlett," Jadyn said from within Jade's body. "Why am I not surprised?"

"How did you know my past self was the one who trained Princess Jadyn?" Ruby asked as Scarlett rolled her eyes.

"Because... I was there," Scarlett smiled, gesturing to her enchantlet. "In a past life."

"Then I take it Jade and Ruby have past lives, like Chef Andre, Gwen, Wallace, Timothy, Amy, Sam, Violet, Dorrie, Candice, Danika, Jeremiah, and Jeremiah and Sam's parents?" Sofia asked.

"Yes," Scarlett smiled as Marcy, Sir Maxwell, and nine-year-old Elizabeth walked up. "But, they are not the only ones."

"Say again?" Dorrie asked, taken off guard.

"Marcy, Maxwell, Elizabeth," Scarlett started. "Please come here."

"Okay," Maxwell agreed on behalf of himself, Marcy, and Elizabeth.

"Look deep into my Amulet of Daveroth," Scarlett instructed Maxwell, Marcy, and Elizabeth.

As the three stared into Scarlett's amulet, memories from long ago flooded their minds ... memories from the Isle of Angels on The Mystic Isles. In a past life, Maxwell was King Maximilian of the Isle of Angels, Marcy was Queen Marcia of the Isle of Angels, and Elizabeth was Princess Alise of the Isle of Angels.

"Remember, now?" Scarlett smiled at Maxwell, Marcy, and Elizabeth.

"As if it were yesterday," Maxwell smiled back.

"Very clearly," Marcy acknowledged. "Like looking into a mirror."

"I was your daughter in a past life," Elizabeth smiled at Maxwell and Marcy. "We were always meant to be together."

Everybody gathered smiled at the touching scene.

"Jade?" Ruby asked. "You back with us, girl?"

"My name is Jadyn!" Jade responded.

"Her mind is still in the past," Scarlett informed Ruby about Jade.

"Queen Scarlett," Amy said as she and Timothy stepped forward. "We may have a way to bring Jade out of this."

"Go ahead," Scarlett directed.

Amy and Timothy started glowing, and transformed into their past lives Crystal Millennium incarnations, Princess Nami and Prince Timeus of the Isle of Mermaids.

"What are you doing?!" Jade, as Jadyn, demanded to know as she raised her sword.

"Shwari, Jadyn! Shwari" ("Quiet, Jadyn! Quiet"), Timothy as Timeus ordered Jade as Jadyn.

"Jadyn," Ruby said to Jade. "Timeus is using his unique gift of Swahili on you. Remember, your language gifts are Japanese and Chinese, Nami's language gifts are Italian and Russian, and Timeus's language gifts are Swahili and Portuguese."

"That's right," Jade remembered, calming down in the process.

"Now, Jadyn, please, gently put your Grandfather's sword on the ground," Amy as Nami requested.

Jadyn put the sword on the ground.

"Now what, Nami?" Jade asked Amy.

"Timeus?" Amy asked, looking at Timothy.

"Agora, Jadyn, vá dormir" ("Now, Jadyn, go to sleep"), Timothy directed Jade as Jadyn.

Jadyn fell to the ground. In a few moments, Jadyn awoke as Jade. At that same moment, Amy and Timothy returned to their present selves.

"Whoa!" Jade exclaimed as she got up. "What was that about?"

"Let's sit you down, Jade," Sofia said in a comforting way as she led Jade over to nearby bench.

As people gathered around Jade and Sofia, Princess Natasha walked over to Lucinda.

"Is it always this ... exciting ... here in Enchancia?" Natasha asked.

"We have our moments," Lucinda answered with a smile.

That night

In Sofia's bedroom in Enchancia Castle, Sofia was relaxing when she heard a knock at her door.

"Come in," Sofia happily called out.

The door of Sofia's bedroom opened, and in walked Sofia's 27-year-old biological sister, Lydia, who was four months pregnant.

"Lydia," Sofia smiled. "Please, sit down. You're pregnant, after all."

"Thanks, Sof," Lydia smiled back as she sat down in an overstuffed chair. "You mustn't worry about me. I'm just four months pregnant."

"It's a sister's job to worry," Sofia confessed. "You're my sister, and I care about your well being."

"Not to worry," Lydia said in a reassuring voice. "Violet, Dorrie, and Candice gave me a quick going over after supper, and my pregnancy is proceeding normally. Besides, you didn't think I'd miss your birthday, did you?"

"Of course not," Sofia admitted.

"I enjoyed meeting some of the newer people you've made friends with," Lydia happily commented. "Rachel, Makayla, Holly, and Noah are nice."

"I like them," Sofia agreed. "They remind me of our commoner days back in Dunwiddie."

"Still a simple girl at heart, huh?" Lydia joked.

"Well, you can put a village girl into the life of royalty, but the village girl will always be a village girl," Sofia smiled.

"Of course," Lydia smiled back. "That's why the people love you."

"Oh please, Lydia," Sofia snickered. "Don't make me blush."

"Sorry," Lydia playfully apologized. "But, look at you - a princess of Enchancia, a royal sorceress of Enchancia, and let us not forget you're a protector of the Ever Realm. Those are some pretty impressive titles, girl."

"You're not doing so bad yourself," Sofia smiled at Lydia. "Queen of Lacorinth, and royal sorceress of Lacorinth."

"I can't complain," Lydia agreed as she sat back in the chair. "Graham is a good man. He's a good husband, and a good king. I couldn't ask for more."

"I'm glad," Sofia happily remarked. "If anybody deserves a happy life, it's you."

"Thank you, Sof," Lydia acknowledged with a smile. "Seems to me you have a happy life, too."

"Well, being a princess does have its advantages," Sofia acknowledged. "You do meet some interesting people."

"Yes," Lydia responded. "I've got to say, having two of the Pearson's as friends is pretty impressive. I like Elainna and Anniale. The two of them are nice girls. They give the House of Pearson a good name."

Sofia smiled in agreement.

"So tell me, Sof," Lydia began. "What do you know about this Princess Natasha of Zoravia?"

"Her and Lucinda just met a short while ago," Sofia explained. "Lucinda told me a little more about her after supper tonight. Her father is the King of Zoravia. The previous ruler, somebody named Lubek, was voted out of power by the people of Zoravia. Apparently, this Lubek was quite unpopular."

"Ooh!" Lydia commented. "Kingdom intrigue."

Suddenly, in the distance, the sound of an explosion came from the direction of Dunwiddie.

"What was that?!" Sofia wondered, alarmed.

Angry (Nonya) and Red (Molly) are from "Tangled: The Series" (which later became "Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure"). I realize they are now called Kiera and Catalina in "Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure", but I named them Nonya and Molly before that came to be. And, I'm sticking with the names Nonya and Molly for consistency in "Once Upon a Time in Enchancia".
