Once Upon a Time in Enchancia
Welcome to Chapter 50 of "Once Upon a Time in Enchancia". This chapter is the second part of a rewritten version of my story "The Storm", with some additional surprises thrown in.
With most stories, Chapter 50 would be the end of a story. However, "Once Upon a Time in Enchancia" readers will remember that a while back I announced that this story would be going to 60 chapters.
Songs in this chapter: a slightly rewritten version of the Enchancian anthem from "Sofia the First", and the Healing Incantation from "Tangled".
Chapter 50: The Storm (Part Two)
April 16, 1870
It was Saturday night at Enchancia Castle. The castle was preparing for the attack from Alcina and her forces. As a precaution, ten-year-old Elizabeth, nine-year-old Molly, nine-year-old Nonya, ten-year-old Timothy, eleven-year-old Marie, and twelve-year-old Calista had been sent off to trusted sites away from the castle for their safety (Elizabeth had been sent to her aunt and uncle; Molly and Nonya had been sent to the Stryker House dorm in Hexley Hall; Timothy and Marie had been sent to stay in Amy's apartment at Hexley Hall, and Calista had been sent to a friend's home in Evermore Landing).
King Roland was in his study when a red-tailed hawk flew up to the window. It then flew into the study and changed into Scarlett.
"King Roland," Scarlett greeted.
"Scarlett," Roland responded. He then noticed that Scarlett's long boots were now equipped with holsters that contained pistols. "Where did you get those boots, Scarlett?"
"Got a few upgrades from a friend," Scarlett smiled.
A crow then flew in through the window and turned into Colette.
"And here she is now, King Roland," Scarlett announced, before turning to Colette. "What's the latest news?"
"Margery has informed me that Alcina's forces will be here within the hour," Colette reported. "As we were told earlier, one wave will attack Enchancia Castle, and the other wave will attack Dunwiddie."
"We're ready on both fronts," Scarlett nodded.
"Good," Colette smiled in acknowledgment. "It's gonna be a pleasure seeing these evil witches finally get theirs". Colette then turned back to the window. "I'd better get ready. See you at the party."
Colette then changed back into a crow and flew out the window.
In Sofia and Lucinda's workshop, Sofia, Lucinda, The Doctor, and Ace were gathered.
"The Nitro-9 is ready," Ace reported.
"And here is the remote control to set it off," The Doctor said as he handed a palm-sized piece of equipment to Ace.
"Now it's time to break out the special weapons," Sofia announced as she and Lucinda walked over to a large cabinet in the workshop.
Sofia opened the large cabinet to reveal two large crossbows, two large handheld machine guns capable of firing off many rounds of ammunition, as well as plenty of ammunition and arrows.
"Those are interesting," The Doctor remarked, impressed.
"Gifts from two friends - Hansel and Gretel," Lucinda announced.
"They are in Dunwiddie helping with the village defenses," Sofia added. Sofia then noticed the time. "It's getting close. Time to go dark."
Within a few minutes, Enchancia Castle went from being fully lit to looking like everybody inside was asleep.
A short distance from Enchancia Castle, Alcina's forces were in the air on broomsticks heading toward the castle. Alcina herself was at the front of the forces.
Alcina pointed at a small group of evil witches who then flew off in the direction of Dunwiddie. The rest of the evil witches flew toward Enchancia Castle. As the bulk of the evil witches approached the castle, everything seemed quiet. Alcina then directed a few of the evil witches to fire their wands at the castle. Suddenly, all the lights at Enchancia Castle came on, followed by Gatling gunfire and cannon fire from the castle grounds being directed toward the evil witches.
As the evil witches tried to get away from the Gatling gunfire and cannon fire, Margery (who had been with Alcina's forces) suddenly disappeared in a puff of smoke and reappeared next to Scarlett who was standing on one of the castle walls.
Alcina and the evil witches with her flew off to one side. Suddenly, out of the corner of her eye, Alcina noticed a dark balloon with something attached to it. On the ground, Ace pointed the remote control The Doctor had given her at the balloon. The balloon then exploded with a powerful force, sending Alcina and her evil witches scattering. Another balloon then exploded.
"Okay!" Alcina shouted in anger. "If it's a ground battle they want, it's a ground battle they'll get!"
Attack on Dunwiddie
Over Dunwiddie, the smaller group of evil witches came flying in. Suddenly, four rooftops sprung open, followed by gunfire and wand fire directed toward the approaching evil witches.
On one rooftop were Hansel, Gretel, Mr. Vanoor, and Mrs. Vanoor firing guns and wands at the evil witches. On another rooftop was Mrs. Hanshaw, sixteen-year-old Ruby, Mrs. Greythorn, and Miss Elodie firing a Gatling gun and wands at the evil witches. On still another rooftop were sixteen-year-old Matilda Honey, seventeen-year-old Jade and some villagers firing Gatling guns and wands at the evil witches. And on the fourth rooftop was a group of villagers firing Gatling guns at the evil witches.
Between the Gatling gunfire and wand fire from the rooftops, the evil witches attacking Dunwiddie were taken completely off guard. On one rooftop, Mrs. Vanoor eyed one of the flying evil witches riding a broomstick.
"Let's see how you like riding a flaming broomstick?" Mrs. Vanoor said as she pointed her wand at the evil witch. The evil witch's broomstick caught on fire, and soon the evil witch and her broomstick went crashing to the ground.
Those on the rooftops continued to fire on the evil witches. Before long, the evil witches who had been attacking Dunwiddie were all vanquished. Those on the rooftops then looked over at Enchancia Castle where a huge battle raged.
'It looks like all hell is breaking loose over there," Hansel remarked. "I hope Lucinda and Sofia are okay?"
"I hope so, too," Gretel remarked.
Some people had been injured in the attack on Dunwiddie. Ruby, having taken some first aid courses, was helping with the wounded. She would eventually have liked to be a doctor sometime in the future, but that was a dream that would take money - more than her and her mother had.
Meanwhile, at the castle
At Enchancia Castle, the battle there was in full swing. Alcina and her evil witches had landed on the grounds of the castle. Suddenly, to the surprise of Alcina and her witches, additional forces emerged from the castle and started attacking the witches.
Sofia and Lucinda charged the grounds with their large handheld guns blazing. Behind them were Miss Flora, Miss Fauna, and Miss Merryweather who were firing their wands. And behind them were Scarlett and Colette.
Scarlet brought out her pistols and started firing at the evil witches. Meanwhile, Colette used a special ability to slow down time around her. In Colette's view, as some of the evil witches approached in slow motion, Colette pulled out her pistols and fired on the evil witches. Between Scarlett and Colette, a number of the evil witches were taken down.
Elsewhere on the grounds, seventeen-year-old James, seventeen-year-old Amber, and sixteen-year-old Natasha, each armed with a pistol, were firing on the evil witches.
"Boom goes the cannon!" James shouted in glee as one of his pistol shots brought down a witch.
"James!" Amber exclaimed in shock. "I thought you had grown out of that catchphrase?!"
"Hey! What can I say?" James smiled as he, Amber, and Natasha continued firing.
Meanwhile, behind the castle, Dorrie, Candice, and Ruth waited in the shadows. In a few moments, a medium-sized ship emerged from the water. It was a ship full of evil witch reinforcements. Dorrie and Candice, each manning a Gatling gun, started firing on the ship. Ruth, holding a laser rifle, also started firing on the ship. In a few minutes, the ship and its witches had been dealt with, with the ship full of bullet and laser holes, and dead witches laying on the deck.
At that same moment, in Evermore Landing
In the nearby Village of Evermore Landing, the people of the village gathered having heard the battle coming from Enchancia Castle.
Among those listening to the battle was Calista, and her white-skinned twelve-year-old friend, Melanie Ludwin.
"I should be there helping," Calista said, feeling helpless.
"It will be okay," Melanie, using a British accent much like Calista's, said in a reassuring voice.
(A piece of instrumental music here: "Space Battleship Andromeda Battle of Saturn").
Suddenly, the villagers started cheering wildly.
"Look!" Melanie's father exclaimed.
"The witches and warlocks from the Repulse are launching!" Malanie's mother cheered.
Witches and warlocks, riding attack brooms, filled the night sky over Evermore Landing as the villagers cheered.
"Yes!" a male villager exclaimed in victory.
"Go!" another male villager cheered at those on the attack brooms.
The attack brooms made their way toward Enchancia Castle. As they approached the castle, a group of Alcina's witches on brooms flew toward the attack brooms from the HMS Repulse. In a few minutes, a fierce airborne firefight took place between both sides.
Each side fired on each other, with the night sky filled with flashes of wand fire. It was a fierce air battle, with some brooms of both sides being destroyed. The battle raged on for a few minutes, with intense fighting between both sides. Brooms on both sides were fired upon, with some being destroyed, and others being forced to land because of damage.
The villagers from Evermore Landing watched from a distance as the battle raged on. In a few moments, the brooms from the HMS Repulse regrouped and charged Alcina's brooms. Since the brooms from the Repulse were greater in number than Alcina's brooms, the brooms from the Repulse overcame Alcina's brooms, destroying Alcina's brooms in the process. The brooms from the Repulse then continued toward Enchancia Castle.
(End of instrumental music).
Back at the castle
Alcina and a few of the evil witches managed to make it inside Enchancia Castle. One of the evil witches came across Queen Miranda who pointed a pistol at the witch. Suddenly, a gray puff of smoke appeared between Miranda and the witch. Out of the smoke appeared sixteen-year-old Princess Vivian.
The witch looked at Vivian. "Well then! You'll get no mercy from me, girl!"
"That's why I brought this!" Vivian shouted as she pulled out a wand. Vivian then started firing magical blasts from her wand, forcing the witch back. Soon, Vivian gained the upper hand. The witch then fell to the floor, exhausted from Vivian's attack.
"Who are you?" the witch asked Vivian in surprise.
"She's Princess Vivian of Zumaria," a female voice answered. "And Heiress to the House of Revargia."
The witch looked up to see Queen Cecily, who was pointing a wand at the witch. Miranda recognized the name of Revargia - it had been a well-known house belonging to a powerful magical family of sorcerers and sorceresses. Up to now, it had been believed that there were no surviving members of the house.
The witch looked at Cecily in stunned shock. "You!" the witch exclaimed while looking at Cecily. "We thought you were ..."
"Dead?" Cecily responded. "I let you and yours believe that so I could raise my daughter in peace."
Cecily then looked at Vivian. "Your friends outside will need all the help they can get. I'll take care of this garbage!"
Vivian raced outside as Cecily fired her wand at the witch.
Elsewhere in the castle, five male guards with rifles were firing on Alcina, with no effect. Each time a bullet would be fired at Alcina, it would be stopped by some kind of force field. Sixteen-year-old Abby Murphy suddenly appeared on the scene and started firing her wand at Alcina. As with the bullets, Abby's wand blasts were stopped by some kind of force field.
The Doctor was nearby and saw what was happening with Alcina, Abby, and the guards. The Doctor quickly observed that Alcina was wearing a large amulet - an alien amulet that contained alien technology.
"I can't let you have that," The Doctor said to Alcina as he stepped forward, raising his Sonic Screwdriver. The Doctor then activated his Sonic Screwdriver, short-circuiting Alcina's alien amulet. The force field dropped. As Alcina raised her wand, two of the guards fired their rifles, taking down Alcina in the process.
Outside, Vivian raced up to Sofia with her wand drawn.
"What?!" Sofia asked Vivian in amazement, noticing that Vivian had a wand.
"I'll explain later," Vivian said.
Sofia and Vivian looked around them as battles raged on the castle grounds. Miss Nettle, Omorn, Mateo, and Gabe were taking on a small group of evil witches on one side. On another side, the knights of Enchancia, along with Violet, were taking on another group of evil witches. Sofia and Vivian then looked to see Lucinda, Nella, Garrett, and Riley jump back as a male centaur-like beast with the body of a horse and the head of a lion jumped forward.
"That's a Lynel!" Vivian exclaimed, shocked. "Mom's told me about them."
Lucinda pointed her wand at the Lynel, only for the Lynel to violently push Lucinda to the ground.
"Lucy!" Sofia cried out as both she and Vivian ran over. The Lynel quickly brushed Sofia and Vivian aside, throwing them to the ground.
"Whoa!" Vivian exclaimed, taken off guard.
"Hey!" Riley shouted at the Lynel. "You can't push around my friends like that!"
The Lynel pointed his sword at Riley. The sword then fired a beam of energy at Riley, who managed to quickly jump out of the way before the beam of energy could hit her. Nella and Garrett then lunged at the Lynel. The Lynel brushed aside Garrett, as Nella plunged her sword into the body of the Lynel. The Lynel, even though wounded, turned to face Nella. The Lynel then started punching Nella hard.
"Over here!" Sofia yelled at the Lynel.
The Lynel dropped Nella, then turned around. Sofia, Lucinda, and Vivian raised their wands and fired. A powerful magical force hit the Lynel, killing the Lynel upon impact.
"Nella!" Garrett cried out, racing over to Nella.
"I'll be okay," Nella said in a weak voice. "That thing got the jump on me."
"Can you stand?" Garrett asked Nella, concerned.
"Yes," Nella answered, still dazed from the beating the Lynel gave her.
"Let's get you off the battlefield," Garrett gently said as he helped Nella to stand. "I'll take care of you."
"Thank you, Garrett," Nella responded, gratefully.
"Get Nella to safety," Sofia said to Garrett. "Lucy, Vivian, Riley, and me will fan out, and will help fight these evil witches."
As Garrett got Nella to safety, Dorrie and Candice raced over.
"Nella!" Candice cried out upon seeing Nella.
"Don't worry," Nella assured Candice. "I look worse than I feel."
"Let's get those cuts looked after," Dorrie said to Nella as she brought out a leather bag which contained medical supplies.
Elsewhere on the castle grounds, Scarlett and Colette each transformed into a phoenix, and then took flight as Roland and Lucinda watched.
"Dad," Lucinda started. "I'm sorry for not telling you this before ... but I can transform, too."
"Do what you have to do, Lucinda," Roland nodded in acceptance.
Lucinda then transformed into a phoenix, took flight, and joined Scarlett and Colette. The three, each a phoenix, swooped down on what was left of the evil witches. Each of their wings lit up with fire as they flew down on the evil witches. Three lines of fire hit the evil witches as Scarlett, Colette, and Lucinda flew by. Most of the evil witches were taken out by the lines of fire. The remaining evil witches were taken out by attack brooms from the HMS Repulse. Scarlett, Colette, and Lucinda then landed and transformed back into their human form.
After the battle
The battle at the castle was over. The castle forces had been victorious.
Roland looked at the castle entrance. A group of people from the village had arrived and were standing at the entrance, looking into the castle grounds. Then, he heard two familiar voices singing - Ruby and Jade.
"From the silver flying horses, of the ever golden glades. To the dragons on the cliff tops, of the misty palisades."
"Enchancia, Enchancia, come hear our humble call. Enchancia, Enchancia, a land for one and all."
"Where the valiant knights protect us, from the darkest evil spells. And your wishes all come true here, if they're made in wishing wells."
Then, everybody joined in.
"Enchancia, Enchancia, a beacon shining bright. Enchancia, Enchancia, where all our dreams take flight."
At that point, everybody gathered clapped. Suddenly, a scream came from inside the castle. Lucinda, being the closest to the castle, ran inside with her wand drawn. In a few moments, Lucinda ran into the dining room where a lone surviving evil witch was holding Amber hostage. On the other side of the room, Miranda had a pistol pointed at the evil witch, while Queen Cecily had her wand pointed at the evil witch.
"You're not going to win this," Cecily said to the evil witch. "You might as well just give up."
"We'll see about that!" the evil witch snapped.
Suddenly, Amber managed to break away from the evil witch. As Amber was running across the room, the evil witch pointed her wand at Amber.
"No!" Lucinda shouted as she raced between the evil witch and Amber.
At that moment, the evil witch fired her wand, hitting Lucinda with the full force of the blast. Lucinda was sent flying across the floor. Miranda raised her pistol and shot the evil witch.
"Lucinda!" Amber cried out. "No!"
Lucinda then saw a bright flash of light. As Lucinda got up off the floor, she looked around to see everybody frozen in place. Lucinda then looked down to see Amber and Miranda kneeling over Lucinda's body. It was then that Lucinda realized she was now a spirit.
From behind Lucinda, the spirit of a beautiful blond-haired woman appeared. Lucinda turned around to face the woman. The woman was the ghost of Queen Melinda.
"Queen Melinda," Lucinda acknowledged, puzzled. "Am I ... dead?"
"No," Melinda smiled. "You're hovering between life and death, Lucinda. You saved my Amber's life, and I am forever in your debt."
"I love her ..." Lucinda started.
"I know," Melinda happily acknowledged. "You've been a fine sister to my children. You and Sofia have both been fine sisters to my children. And Miranda has been a fine mother to my children. James and Amber and Roland are truly blessed having the three of you."
Lucinda smiled in gratitude at Melinda.
"It's time for you to return to the land of the living, Lucinda," Melinda announced.
Lucinda looked around the room and started becoming disoriented.
On the floor, Amber and Miranda were kneeling over Lucinda.
"Hang on Lucinda!" Miranda cried. "Stay with us!"
At that point, Sofia, James, Roland, and Scarlett ran into the dining room. Suddenly, Scarlett's amulet started glowing. Then, out of nowhere, a woman with short brown hair appeared - Princess Rapunzel.
Rapunzel looked down at Lucinda, then looked at Scarlett with tears in her eyes. "There's nothing I can do, Scarlett. My powers are gone. It was the price for defeating Zhan Tiri."
"Perhaps there's still a chance," Scarlett said to Rapunzel. "Otherwise, my amulet would not have summoned you."
Scarlett then reached into a pouch she was wearing and pulled out a vial. Scarlett then went over to the dining table, poured some water into a glass, and put the contents of the vial into the glass of water. When Scarlett used a spoon to mix what was in the vial with the water, the glass suddenly started glowing with a bright yellow light.
"I was entrusted with some of the golden flower that saved your mother's life when she was pregnant with you, and in turn gave you the powers you had" Scarlett revealed. "There's a chance drinking this will restore your powers."
Rapunzel took the glass from Scarlett, looked at it for a few moments, then drank the contents of the glass. In a few moments, Rapunzel's hair turned from brown to blond and grew down to her knees. Rapunzel then walked over to where Lucinda was laying and kneeled down, putting her hair on Lucinda. Rapunzel's hair then started to glow as Rapunzel started singing.
"Flower, gleam and glow. Let your power shine. Make the clock reverse. Bring back what once was mine."
"Heal what has been hurt. Change the Fates' design. Save what has been lost. Bring back what once was mine, what once was mine."
Lucinda was suddenly surrounded by a bright yellow glow. Lucinda's amulet also started glowing. In a few moments, the bright yellow glow around Lucinda disappeared, and Lucinda's amulet stopped glowing. Lucinda then opened her eyes.
"Oh, Lucinda!" Miranda cried out in happiness. "You're back!" Miranda then turned to Rapunzel. "Thank you," Miranda said with tears of joy streaming down her face.
Miranda and Rapunzel helped Lucinda to her feet.
"How are you feeling, Lucinda?" Rapunzel asked.
"A bit weak," Lucinda started. "But okay. Thank you for bringing me back."
"You're welcome, Lucinda," Rapunzel smiled. "It's not your time yet. You still have a great many years of good to perform. You would be truly missed if you went before your time."
Repunzel then looked at Lucinda's amulet. "And, because you were willing to give your life to save another life, your amulet has given you a new gift - the ability to heal people, like I now can again."
Lucinda and Rapunzel hugged each other. Then, Rapunzel turned to Scarlett.
"Thank you, Scarlett" Rapunzel smiled. "Thank you for restoring my powers".
"You're welcome, my dear friend," Scarlett happily responded.
"I have a lot to explain to Eugene," Rapunzel smiled at Scarlett. Rapunzel then disappeared into thin air.
Sofia, James, and Roland then raced over to Lucinda. Sofia, James, Roland, Miranda, and Amber then hugged Lucinda for the longest time as everybody else in the room smiled.
April 17, 1870
It was now the following day. In Enchancia Castle, Roland had called Lucinda into his study.
"Lucinda," Roland started. "There is something I would like to talk to you about."
"What, Dad?" Lucinda asked.
"Last night, I saw you transform into a phoenix," Roland observed. "And you said that you were sorry for not telling me you could do that. I'd like to ask - have you been limiting your powers? And if so, why?"
This was a conversation that Lucinda was afraid of having.
"It's alright," Roland said reassuringly. "You can tell me."
"Maybe it's time," Lucinda said. "Did Sofia ever tell you how she and I first met as children?"
"Yes," Roland said as he put his hand on Lucinda's hand. "I know that you were hexing people, and how you then changed. But that's in the past, Lucinda."
"During that time, before Sofia came along, I felt very alone," Lucinda started. "Then I had friends, and I wasn't alone anymore. But there was always the fear inside me that I'd be alone again. And that was the last thing I wanted. I didn't want to go back to that."
Lucinda thought for a few moments, then continued. "Then, my parents died, and suddenly I was alone again. And then you and mom adopted me and made me part of this wonderful family. And I promised myself that I would limit my abilities so I'd better fit in here. I didn't want to do anything that might cause me to be alone ever again."
"Oh, Lucinda!" Roland said as he gently hugged Lucinda. "I'm so very sorry you felt that way. We would never ask you to put such a limit on yourself. We love you for who you are. And we want you to reach your full potential."
"Thank you, Dad," Lucinda smiled.
"You make me so proud, every day," Roland smiled at Lucinda.
That afternoon, at the Hanshaw house in Dunwiddie, there was a knock at the door. Mrs. Hanshaw opened the door and discovered King Roland standing there.
"Good afternoon, Mrs. Hanshaw," Roland greeted. "May I come in?"
"Yes, of course, King Roland," Mrs. Hanshaw answered. As she showed Roland in, she offered him a chair, and the two sat down. "What may I do for you, King Roland?" Mrs. Hanshaw asked.
"It's more what I can do for you and Ruby," Roland started. "Enchancia has a scholarship fund for deserving students. And I've heard that Ruby would like to someday become a doctor. When Ruby graduates from Hexley Hall, a full scholarship will be waiting for her that will allow her to attend medical school. All of her expenses will be paid for."
Mrs. Hanshaw sat in her chair with tears of happiness streaming down her face. "Thank you, King Roland. Thank you."
"You're very welcome, Helen," Roland smiled.
Back at Enchancia Castle, preparations were underway for a grand celebration to celebrate the victory over the evil witches. Everybody who had taken part in the defense of Dunwiddie and Enchancia Castle would be attending.
As Lucinda walked into the ballroom, Violet was setting up drinking glasses on a table. Suddenly, one of the drinking glasses accidentally fell to the floor and broke. As Violet picked up what was left of the drinking glass, she cut her hand. Lucinda rushed over and kneeled next to Violet.
"That was quite clumsy of me, miss," Violet started. "I'm sorry."
"These things happen," Lucinda smiled at Violet. "It can be fixed ... as can your hand."
Lucinda then touched her amulet. Lucinda's amulet started glowing as Lucinda's hair turned blond and grew to her knees. Lucinda then wrapped her hair around Violet's hand as Lucinda started singing the same healing song that Rapunzel would sing.
Lucinda's hair glowed for a few moments as the cut on Violet's hand was healed. Lucinda's hair then stopped glowing. In a few moments, Lucinda's hair returned to its normal length and color.
"There," Lucinda smiled at Violet. "All better."
"Thank you, Princess," Violet smiled. "That's a precious gift you have."
Lucinda then pulled out her wand and pointed it at the broken glass. "Glassico repairo," Lucinda said as she pointed her wand at the broken drinking glass. The drinking glass returned to normal as if nothing had ever happened to it. Lucinda then put the drinking glass back on the table.
Baileywick looked at the scene from a distance and smiled. "Lucinda is such a kind young woman," Baileywick thought. "Enchancia is truly blessed having her."
In a room in Enchancia Castle, James and Vivian were talking while holding hands.
"Time for me to tell you everything," Vivian started. "My mother is a powerful sorceress who was a part of the House of Revargia. Over time, Neila tried to convince the House of Revargia to join in her evil plans. The House of Revargia told her no, and Neila declared war on the house. After many battles, it finally came down to an ultimate battle which, unfortunately, Neila and her witches won. The only three people of the house who survived was my mother, my father, and me as a baby."
Vivian stopped for a moment, then continued. "My mother and father took me and went into hiding. But Neila and her witches found us while we were in a house in the woods. My mother and I were able to escape as Neila and her witches blew up the house. My father stayed behind to distract Neila ... and he didn't make it. Neila thought the three of us had died, and they went away."
"I'm so sorry, Vivian," James said as he tried to comfort Vivian.
"What Neila didn't know is my mother and me eventually made our way to Zumaria," Vivian said. "One day, my mother met King Marcus, and the two of them fell in love. After they married, they raised me outwardly as Princess Vivian of Zumaria. Then, when I became a suitable age, my mother revealed the truth to me, and secretly started my training as a sorceress."
Vivian again stopped for a few moments, then continued. "I hope, James, that this won't change anything between us?"
"Of course not," James smiled. "Sofia and Lucinda are sorceresses, and I've always accepted them as such. And I accept you as a sorceress, Vivian. As far as I'm concerned, that is one more thing to love about you."
James and Vivian then hugged each other, having become closer than ever before.
That night
In the ballroom of Enchancia Castle, the grand celebration for everybody who took part in the defense of Enchancia Castle and the Village of Dunwiddie was getting underway.
"I want to welcome you all to this grand celebration," Roland announced. "Everybody gathered in this room had a hand in our recent victory. And I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart."
Everybody had a wonderful time enjoying food and drink and talking to each other. Later that night, in the Peppertree Forest, Dorrie and Candice walked Ruth to her Tardis.
"Well, it's been a pleasure, ladies," Ruth smiled at Dorrie and Candice. "Perhaps I could come back here at some point? I rather like Enchancia."
"You're always welcome here ... Doctor," Dorrie smiled back.
"I've best be going," Ruth said as she stepped into her Tardis. "See the two of you later."
"See you later," Candice happily acknowledged. "Safe journeys."
Ruth closed the door of her Tardis. In a few moments, Ruth's Tardis dematerialized into thin air.
"You're kidding me, right?" Lucinda asked as she stepped from behind a tree. "Ruth was actually another version of the Doctor?"
"It's ... complicated," Dorrie remarked, before changing the subject. "Who knew you could transform like that?"
"Yeah," Lucinda shyly acknowledged. "Sorry about that."
"Don't apologize," Candice said reassuringly. "Dorrie and I are happy to have somebody else who can transform."
"Candice goes on morning flights as a dragon every so often," Dorrie pointed out. "The two of you should go flying sometime."
"I'd love to have you along," Candice smiled at Lucinda.
"Thank you," Lucinda happily accepted.
"We've better get back to the castle," Dorrie advised.
Dorrie, Candice, and Lucinda waved their wands over their heads, and each disappeared in a puff of smoke.
Meanwhile, in Corinthia, ten-year-old Elizabeth was staying with her aunt and her uncle. Elizabeth was getting ready for bed, and her aunt and uncle were tucking her in for the night.
"There you go, sweetheart," Elizabeth's Aunt Louisa smiled.
"Thank you, Aunt Louisa," Elizabeth smiled back, before turning serious. "I hope the castle is okay?"
"I'm sure it is," Elizabeth's uncle said in a reassuring voice.
"After all, the castle forces were victorious," Louisa spoke up. "All they have to do now is to clean up the castle, and nearby Dunwiddie."
"Because of that, school in the Dunwiddie area has been put on hold until Wednesday," Elizabeth's uncle revealed. "You'll be staying with us until Tuesday."
"It will be nice spending extra time with you, Uncle Alexander, Aunt Louisa," Elizabeth happily admitted.
"You've better be getting to bed," Louisa smiled. "Your uncle and I thought it would be nice for the three of us to have a picnic lunch in the countryside tomorrow."
"That sounds nice," Elizabeth acknowledged as she started drifting off to sleep.
As Elizabeth fell asleep, Louisa and Alexander left the room. Soon, Elizabeth was asleep and started having a dream. As Elizabeth was dreaming, it was as if she were outside of her body looking down at events as they unfolded.
In Elizabeth's dream, it was the far past in the Mystic Isles. On the Isle of Wind Walkers, she noticed a past version of a boy who was new to Hexley Hall - Prince Chang Kai of Wuton. In the past, Chang Kai was Prince Kai-Li of the Wind Walkers. The Wind Walkers were brutal and war-like at that time, preferring war to peace.
As the dream continued, Elizabeth saw a past version of her boyfriend at Hexley Hall, Kirk Winston. In the past, Kirk was Lucas. the palace kitchen boy of the Royal Angel family on the Isle of Angels. Elizabeth at that time was Princess Alise of the Isle of Angels.
The dream then took a darker tone. Prince Kai-Li had captured Alise because of a war that Lucas himself had caused between the Isle of Wind Walkers and the Isle of Angels. As the dream continued, Elizabeth saw James as he was in the past. James was Jonas, court composer for King Maximilian of the Isle of Angels. In the dream, Jonas was explaining to Lucas that Lucas' love for Alise could never be since romance between classes was forbidden at that time. Lucas became angry at the fact that he would never be allowed to have a relationship with Alise. To get even, Lucas went behind the scenes and stirred up trouble between the Isle of Angels and the Isle of Wind Walkers. That led to a war between the Isle of Angels and the Isle of Wind Walkers.
As Elizabeth watched the events unfold, she suddenly felt a strong force pulling her back to her sleeping body. Elizabeth then woke up.
"Weird dream," Elizabeth thought to herself as she lay in bed. "But, it was so real."
April 18, 1870
It was a Monday morning at Enchancia Castle. At the top of the steps leading to the castle stood King Roland, Baileywick, and Dorrie. In a few moments, a small horse-drawn carriage pulled into the castle courtyard. As a male servant walked up and held the carriage's horse, a white-skinned 74-year-old man with white hair climbed off of the carriage.
"Aaron Gosman, professor of sociology at Enchancia College," Baileywick announced as the man approached.
"Professor Gosman," Roland smiled as he warmly shook Gosman's hand. "Welcome to Enchancia Castle. Dorrie has told me about meeting you."
"Thank you, King Roland," Professor Gosman acknowledged as he bowed. "I met Dorrie a while ago when I was walking in Evermore Landing. We struck up a conversation, and she told me she works and lives here in the castle. You see, Your Majesty, I walk around the villages in Enchancia learning all I can about the people who live in them. I then write books that feature their stories."
"I know," Roland proudly admitted. "I've read your books. I'm a big fan of yours. I understand your heritage is Golonian."
"You know of my birth country?" Professor Gosman asked, pleased.
"Oh, yes," Roland smiled. "Golonia and Enchancia have been allies for many years."
"When I was a baby, my parents immigrated to Enchancia," Professor Gosman explained. "My walking around the villages of Enchancia was inspired by my father. When I was a boy, my father and I would take carriage trips on roads to see where they ended up. When we came to a village at the end of a road, we'd walk around and explore the village in question. It's been in my blood ever since."
"Ah, yes," Roland happily acknowledged. "My father would do similar to me when I was a boy. It was always great fun."
At that moment, a giant white dragon flew overhead.
"Amazing!" Gosman exclaimed, impressed.
"My sister, Candice," Dorrie smiled. "She has transformation abilities."
"Ah, yes," Gosman acknowledged. "I remember you telling me about her when we first met, and how you can transform as well. I'd love to hear more about that."
"We can talk as we tour the castle," Roland smiled. "I've been looking forward to your visit ever since Dorrie suggested it. If you'll follow us, we'll get started."
As Roland, Dorrie, and Gosman walked into the castle, the three had a pleasant conversation. Meanwhile, in Lucinda's room, Lucinda had just gotten ready for the day. As Lucinda sat on her bed with Hexie, Rex the German Shepherd walked in.
"Good morning, Lucinda, Hexie," Rex greeted.
"Good morning, Rex," Lucinda smiled.
Lucinda looked out her window and saw Candice as a dragon hovering nearby.
"What about it, Lucy?" Candice happily asked. "Want to take a flight?"
Lucinda smiled, then turned to Hexie and Rex. "You want to know something, guys?"
"What, Lucinda?" Hexie inquired.
"I think I'm going to take a quick flight," Lucinda announced.
"Go for it," Rex said in an encouraging voice.
Lucinda opened her window all the way, then transformed into a bald eagle and flew off. Hexie and Rex watched from the window as Lucinda flew off with Candice. Hexie and Rex smiled. They had never seen Lucinda happier. It was a wonderful way to start a day.
(End of Chapter 50).
Behind the scenes
In this edition of "Behind the scenes", we again focus on the coronavirus pandemic that we are in the middle of. I continue to be well, and I hope you and your loved ones are well.
The sad part of all of this is that we have lost people because of the coronavirus pandemic. There have been a number of deaths since Chapter 49 of "Once Upon a Time in Enchancia" came out. Among those who we have lost was 74-year-old William Helmreich who died on March 29th. Helmreich was a sociology professor at The City College of New York, and was famous for not only walking almost every street of New York City and talking to people he met, but also writing books filled with the stories of those he met. In a letter posted to the school's website, president Vince Boudreau called Helmreich a "foundational member" of the school's sociology department, who began his career there "before the great changes our institution underwent in the 1970s."
"Willy - as everyone knew him - was an expansive writer and analyst, covering topics as varied as immigration, life inside yeshivas and the formation of stereotypes," Boudreau wrote. "He will, however, almost certainly be most fondly remembered for a joyful series of recent books, chronicling his efforts to walk all the streets of New York, and report on what he saw and heard."
Helmreich wrote nearly 20 books, including "The New York Nobody Knows: Walking 6,000 Miles in the City," in which he shared his conversations with people of the city he met on his journey, of all backgrounds and walks of life. He also wrote spinoff volumes highlighting each of the five boroughs - but was not completely done with his plans at the time of his death. Helmreich had almost finished walking Staten Island, and a book had been planned about the stories he had gathered from Staten Island.
Those who knew Helmreich describe him as a person who believed that everybody had a story worth telling. Every place and every person was interesting to Helmreich. And every person felt interesting when talking to Helmreich.
Helmreich's death came as I was finishing up Chapter 50 of "Once Upon a Time in Enchancia". When I heard of Helmreich's death, I decided to do something in his memory - create a guest character in the form of Aaron Gosman, professor of sociology at Enchancia College. Professor Gosman is based on William Helmreich, and is my way of honoring a great man who has now left us.
As we go through this period of uncertainty in our lives, I am reminded of something that Fred Rogers (of "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" fame) use to recount - "When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping". Let us remember that we are not alone. We have so many people out there working for us on the front lines. We have doctors and nurses. We have medical researchers who are looking for a cure. We have government officials who are working to keep us safe. We have police officers, firefighters, and soldiers who are working to keep us safe. We have truck drivers who are working to keep our stores stocked. We have store employees who are working to keep our stores operating. We have public works personnel who are working to keep our communities in tip-top shape. And we have volunteers who are donating their time to help the needy during this time of need. I take great comfort in the fact that we have such people working on our behalf.
All of us can help limit the spread of coronavirus by doing the following: staying at home, and in places where it is allowed, going out only when necessary; avoid large events and mass gatherings; practice social distancing when out, keeping a distance of six feet between you and others; wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol; cover your mouth and nose with your elbow or a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then throw away the used tissue; avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth; clean and disinfect surfaces you often touch on a daily basis.
Please continue to remember that the darkest hour comes before the dawn. We will get through this if we all do common sense things like those listed above. Keep the faith. See you next chapter.
Yours faithfully,

Author's notes
A Lynel is a powerful creature from "The Legend of Zelda" video game series. Bringing a Lynel into this chapter, and having it attack Sofia, Lucinda, Nella, Garrett, and Riley was the idea of Battlefieldfan2. I added Vivian to the action to round out the scene.
Angry (Nonya) and Red (Molly) are from "Tangled: The Series" (which later became "Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure"). I realize they are now called Kiera and Catalina in "Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure", but I named them Nonya and Molly before that came to be. And, I'm sticking with the names Nonya and Molly for consistency in "Once Upon a Time in Enchancia".
"Boom goes the cannon!" James shouted in glee as one of his pistol shots brought down a witch - this scene was the idea of Brigade701.
Elizabeth West-Chadwick / Princess Alise, Lady Louisa Windsong-Pepperton, Kirk Winston / Lucas, Marie Perkins, Prince Chang Kai / Prince Kai-Li, Sir Alexander Pepperton the Second, and Timothy O'Toole are characters created by MisuteriTenshi / SailorWednesdayMercury and are used in this story with the permission of MisuteriTenshi / SailorWednesdayMercury.
Eugene and Rapunzel are from "Tangled", "Tangled: The Series". and "Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure".
Gabe and Mateo are from "Elena of Avalor". Bringing Gabe and Mateo into this chapter was the idea of Brigade701
Garrett, Nella, and Riley are from "Nella the Princess Knight". Bringing Riley into this chapter was the idea of Battlefieldfan2. Meanwhile, Royal Wizard Omorn is an original character I created to help round things out.
Gatling gun: the Gatling gun is one of the best-known early rapid-fire spring loaded, hand cranked weapons, and a forerunner of the modern machine gun and rotary cannon. Invented by Richard Gatling, it saw occasional use by the Union forces during the American Civil War in the 1860s, which was the first time it was employed in combat.
Golonia is from "Elena of Avalor".
Hansel and Gretel are from "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters".
Having Elizabeth dream about her past life on the Mystic Isles was the idea of MisuteriTenshi / SailorWednesdayMercury (who also provided details that went into the dream).
Having Timothy and Marie stay in Amy's apartment in Hexley Hall was the idea of MisuteriTenshi / SailorWednesdayMercury.
Matilda Honey is based on Matilda from the "Matilda" children's book and movie, but adapted for the "Sofia the First" universe. The version of Matilda in my stories has retained her powers, and currently attends Hexley Hall as a student. Matilda's adopted mother is Jennifer Honey, who teaches at the local school in Dunwiddie.
Melanie Ludwin is a new character I created for "Once Upon a Time in Enchancia". I thank Brigade701 for coming up with the last name of Ludwin.
Natasha is based on Natasha from the original "Princess Natasha" TV series, but adapted for the "Sofia the First" universe. Having Natasha being brought into "Once Upon a Time in Enchancia" was the idea of Luiz4200.
Queen Melinda is a character created by Jolly Roger Brat. Queen Melinda is used in this story with the permission of Jolly Roger Brat. Even though we now know Amber and James' birth mother's name (Lorelei, thanks to "Sofia the First: Forever Royal"), both Jolly Roger Brat and myself have decided to continue using Melinda as Amber and James' birth mother for consistency in our stories.
Rapunzel looked down at Lucinda, then looked at Scarlet with tears in her eyes. "There's nothing I can do, Scarlett. My powers are gone. It was the price for defeating Zhan Tiri" - this is a reference to events seen in the final episode of "Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure".
"Space Battleship Andromeda Battle of Saturn" is from "Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2199".
The Ruth Doctor is from the "Doctor Who" episodes "Fugitive of the Judoon" and "The Timeless Children". It was revealed in "The Timeless Children" that the Ruth Doctor was part of a former life of The Doctor which took place before the William Hartnell episodes of "Doctor Who". It was also revealed in "The Timeless Children" that one of the regenerations after Ruth had his mind erased by the Time Lords, therefore erasing the memory of that regeneration and all past regenerations from all future regenerations of The Doctor.
The Scarlett Warrior (A.K.A. Scarlett) (A.K.A. Queen Scarlett) (A.K.A. Queen Scarlett Katherine Felchenerow) is a character created by Ben10Man and is used in my stories with permission from Ben10Man. Meanwhile, the character of Colette (A.K.A. Lady Colette Cosmarune) is a character that I and Ben10Man created and is based on Bayonetta from the video game "Bayonetta" (please note that Colette, and Madam Collette of Enchancia Castle, are two different characters who are not related in any way, shape, or form).
The seventh Doctor and Ace are from the Sylvester McCoy era of "Doctor Who".
Yeshiva: an academy for the advanced study of Jewish texts, primarily the Talmud - the Talmud being the collection of ancient rabbinic writings on Jewish law and tradition (the Mishna and the Gemara) that constitute the basis of religious authority in Orthodox Judaism.
Zhan Tiri is from "Tangled: The Series" and "Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure".
