Chapter 8
Myles was talking with Jane near the trees when Megan saw them.
It had been a week since their date on Avalon and almost the next day, Fairy Godmother asked Myles to see if he could get his sister to access her magic. He didn't question it, nor did Jane, honestly the two actually looked happy to be in each other's company. Acting like loving siblings for once.
"Ok, just concentrate, breathing is key but also so are your emotions. Magic is as thin as paper without meaning behind it" he said as Jane closed her eyes and extended her hand outwards to a small round rock on the ground. Moving her fingers slowly, a sky blue colored dust started forming around them and the rock started to move and smooth down until it was shaped like a frisbee.
When she looked down, Jane frowned with a whine. "Hey, some progress is better than no progress" Myles said, but Jane plopped backwards in the grass "it was supposed to look like a mouse" Jane said miserably before leaning backwards and layed on the ground "ugg, how am I supposed to get the hang of this?"
Megan winced in sympathy and decided to continue walking to the siblings "well it might help if you stop doubting yourself" she said as both Jane and Myles jerked their heads to Megan, their faces looked as though they'd been caught breaking a strict rule. Picking up on it, Megan just smiled "guys, c'mon it's me … not like I'm gonna report you or anything. Plus FG asked you to learn" she said jokingly, which seemed to ease their tension slightly.
"Mom … thinks if I learn magic then I'll understand 'true beauty is on the inside' … yeah right" Jane said rolling her eyes while Myles just frowned at his sister. "The two of you really are twins …" Megan muttered to herself thinking how Myles was still slowly resisting the love potion. A fact she brought up with Mal and begged her for an antidote for. Despite being a VK, Megan hated to see misery, especially on the guy she was falling for too.
Jane just huffed and layed back on the grass in frustration. "I don't get it … why does magic work better for you two and Mal but i suck?" Jane asked as Myles scratched his head. "I've been practicing for years, Jane you're not gonna get it in one go" he said as the fairy girl sat back up "I'm sure Megan and Mal did, I mean … you guys lived in a place without magic for all your life" she said making Megan wince.
"Yeah um … we have our mom's spellbooks" Megan admitted. She didn't want to, but she found it really difficult to lie to these two about this, especially since Megan wanted to use magic ever since her mom told her she had it. "And even then, it took us a while to get it right"
Myles looked at her for a while before looking at Jane "see? Magic might be hard to learn at first, but it's better if you have a focus. If not an object then a desire. A strong emotion to tie you to it" he said as Jane just slumped her shoulders "and I have neither" she said before getting up. "I think that's enough for today ..." Jane said miserably before walking off.
Watching her leave, Myles rubbed his eyes before conjuring a beanbag chair behind him and sat down. "Note to self … never apply for a teaching position" he said, making Megan smirk. "I've seen worse" a voice said up in the trees as Aristotle flew down and landed on Myles' shoulder.
"He's right, like you said, it took you years to master even using magic" Megan said sympathetically but Myles only sighed "maybe it'll help if she has a focus like you said" she suggested, thinking of their mom's wand.
"A focus is pointless without the confidence behind it. If you can't believe you can do it then all you're doing is waving your hands with a stick in the air or reading from a book" Myles said, making Megan realize he was right. Back when she did her first spell, it wasn't till she really wanted those doubles to appear that they did.
"What's your focus?" Megan asked suddenly as Myles looked at her in surprise. Obviously he hadn't expected that. She watched as Myles thought hard to find an answer before finally figuring out what it was.
"The strongest emotion to use as a focus is love, but with me … it's conviction" he said before looking out to the barrier encased isle off the coast of Auradon. "That one day, all of Auradon will be at true peace, united, including the Isle" he said before smiling sadly at her. "The reason mom and dad's wands are so strong is because love is their focus behind their magic. All others use malice or justice, fun and joy can be powerful too, dad's was even focused on educational purposes before meeting mom but love … selfless love … that's power"
Megan couldn't help but smile at his examples of emotional focus, honesty the way he talked about love was textbook fairy tale. "Well … if it helps, I think you're pretty powerful already" she said making Myles smile "I think … I think I'm getting there"

In their Remedial Goodness class, Fairy Godmother motioned for them to settle down. "Children, as I'm sure some of you know: this Sunday is Family Day. Due to your parents being unavailable due to … distance, I've put together a bit of a treat for you" she said before pulling out a large television and turned it on.
At once, the image of Maleficent, Evil Queen, Jafar, Cruella DeVille, and Morgana looking confused.
"I can't see a thing, is it on?" Maleficent said as Morgana rolled her eyes. "Oh yes a blank screen is obviously a sign that it's on" she said as Jafar tried fiddling with something off screen "I think, push that button-" "I AM pushing buttons! That's all this stupid thing is!" The two argued as their children looked on in surprise and walked closer. "Maybe- AH! Mal!" Maleficent cried as she apparently got visual, making FG smile as the other villains 'warmly' greeted their children.
"Ugh, who's the ugly old bat?" Cruella said, making the FG frown. "Wait a second …" Maleficent said leaning closer before bursting into a laugh "well well, if it isn't Blue … you let yourself go dear, hahaha!" She said as Mal looked uncomfortable and tried to mediate a bit "everyone, this is Fairy Godmother" Mal said as the five sneared. "Still doing tricks with eggplants?" Maleficent said with a mischievous smirk.
"I turned a pumpkin into a beautiful carriage!" FG said standing her ground but Morgana just laughed "you really couldn't give Cinderella till 1am? Seriously?" She asked as Maleficent elbowed her jokingly "the hamsters probably had to be back on their little wheels" she said as the five burst out laughing.
"They were mice!" FG said before turning to the five saying the same thing as Megan nodded and FG decided to leave before a full blown argument would erupt between the two fairies. "Hi mom" Mal said as the five spoke with their parents but FG kept an ear out.
She didn't like it, but her husband was certain his sister was plotting something, and Merlin usually had a good sense about this kind of thing. However she was brought out of her musings when Carlos snapped at his mother and Jay turned the television off.
Looking confused, FG looked at the five in concern. "Thank you, Fairy Godmother" Mal said with a frown and the five grabbed their stuff to leave. When they left, FG sat at her desk before pulling out Merlin's letter again. He not only wanted Jane to get a handle on using magic but wanted his wand out of the museum for Myles.
The first request was accepted, in reluctance by her, but the second one? Now that was another matter entirely. Despite what she thought, King Beast was impossible to persuade that magic wasn't all bad. Honestly, the guy gets cursed for being a brat at eleven and his opinion is cemented, even if the curse helped him in the end.
Still though, if Merlin wanted Myles to have his wand then something pretty bad must be brewing.

Needless to say, the meeting went as well as she expected. King Beast was livid and pacing, ranting about magic as Belle frowned. At who was anyone's guess right now.
"I made that museum for a reason! Those objects are dangerous! And you want to give one to a child!" He stated as FG sighed patiently "Myles is fifteen, nearly sixteen. Just like your son and you're crowning him king" she said as Adam snapped. "A crown is not the same as a wand!" He said as FG stood up more sternly and the king flinched slightly. He still was jumpy about angry magic users.
"That wand is his by birthright, and my husband believes Myles will need it. Say what you will about him, Merlin is never wrong about these things" she said in a deathly calm voice as Belle gently got up and placed a hand on her husband's shoulder before looking at the fairy.
"And your wand?" She asked, making FG cross her arms "until Jane earns her wings, it will stay in the museum. And if she learns magic well from Myles, most likely when she turns eighteen. Less if things go well"
"You cannot make such a claim … under my rule-" "in a week your rule will be over … things are changing, your majesty. You can complain or move forward … and sometimes in order to move forward, you must take a step back first" she said sternly, both king and queen looked at each other before Adam finally conceded.
"Very well" he said before pulling out his phone to make a call. Belle looked at FG and moved her out of earshot to speak "Blue, normally you wouldn't be so adamant about this … what's going on?" She whispered but FG only shook her head. "If I tell you, it won't happen, and it must … according to Merlin and Myles … I'm glad Jane doesn't have that power … I hope" she said, finishing in a wince.
"Okay, I trust you … just please, promise Ben will be kept safe" Belle said, making FG smile softly at her then nodded. "If I know Myles, that goes without saying"

Myles was standing in one of the lounge rooms looking at one of the fireplaces with Jane but were a good ways away as Ben and Doug inspected it. Apparently a hidden room was found behind it by Jane and was terrified when she saw it coated with metal along the entryway.
"This must have been built by my great great grandfather, Alexander … or commissioned anyway" Ben said, speaking of the first inhabitant of the castle. Rumor had it, Lex treated his son so bad he took it out on his son, and so on down the line till the curse came into play.
"Well whoever built it, you two can relax" Doug said then confidently smiled at the twins "it's lead, not iron" he said as both Jane and Myles sighed in relief just as Mal came by with Megan.
"What's goin on?" Megan asked, noticing the difference in distance as Ben jabbed his thumb to the secret sliding fireplace. "Jane found one of the hidden rooms the castle has. My parents thought they found them all but apparently we might have missed a few at least"
"Okay but … why were Jane and Myles acting like it was toxic waste?" Mal asked as Doug got up "we were testing it to make sure the walls weren't lined with iron, since it burns fairies … and yes I know they're twins. Kinda obvious" he said with a smug shrug as Mal chuckled. "Gotta be a curse to be one of the smart kids" she said in a snarky but joking manner.
As the twins chuckled themselves, their mother arrived and blinked in surprise at the fireplace entrance. As soon as they all filled her in, FG shook her head "well we'll have to do another sweep of the castle this weekend it seems" she said as Ben shrugged "the castle is three hundred years old, not every secret can be found, even after twenty years"
With that though hanging in the air, Fairy Godmother snapped her fingers "right, I almost forgot why i came in the first place" she said before waving Myles over and lead him, and the others, out to the main foyer where two guards from the Museum stood with a long wooden box between them and sat it on a nearby table.
"Myles … your father sent me a letter. He wants to be certain the Coronation on Friday doesn't have any mishaps-" she said, not seeing Megan and Mal's concerned glances they shared for a split second. "Which is why he asked you have this-" she said looking toward the wooden box.
Following her gaze, Myles looked concerned at the case. He had a suspicion of what it was, but he couldn't be sure unless he opened it. So, as he finally walked to the box, he hovered his hand over it for a moment before reaching for the hatches, clicked unlocked instantly before he even touched it and the lid flew open.
Inside, surrounded by packing straw, was a three foot long wooden cane. at first glance it could have looked like a piece of driftwood or a small smoothed tree branch, but Myles knew. He saw that every time he visited the 'Gallery of Mentors' at the Museum.
"Dad's wand?" Jane asked in confusion and a bit of envy as Myles gingerly picked it up as though it were fragile. Looking it over, the handle, he saw, was smoothed at the top and the grip was grooved slightly making bumps like how the legs of renaissance style furniture were crafted. When he put his hand on the grip, a warmth tingled around his fingers as he pulled, revealing an 11 ½ long wand that seemed to light up at the touch of being free.
Myles smiled but then looked at his mother in confusion "I thought the king wanted all magic items confiscated?" He asked which Mal and Megan shared a worrying look. "He did … but … He agreed you would need it more if it meant keeping Ben safe" FG said confusing Ben.
"We also agreed-" she said looking to her daughter "that you should inherit my wand as soon as you master your magic and get your wings" FG commented as her own wings fluttered behind her, shimmering in the light before going still and invisible again. With a final smile, she and the other two guards left leaving the teens in thought.
"Protect me?" Ben said before looking at Myles, who had placed the wand back in the cane "what did she mean by that? Have you seen anything?" He muttered to his friend as Megan and Mal listened in.
In truth yes he did: the barrier over the island cracked, a giant dragon at the coronation, his mom's wand at the center of it, but as he tried to look upon those events they kept shifting, as though the future was being altered.
"I'm not entirely sure" Myles finally said before looking at Megan and Mal who seemed deep in their own conversation "but one thing is certain … your coronation is going to be … very memorable"
