Chapter 1: Living an Ordinary Life

The Sun was shining above us. The air, however, was chilly. In our jackets, Blaze and I walked down a bustling city street, ready for a day full of shopping. It had been five years since Sonic and I moved here, and I loved every second of it.

"Do you know the right way? I think we missed it." I said to her.

"Yes, I know the right way. It shouldn't be too far now." We continued walking. The wind blew lightly, sending a nice breeze over my fur. Today was a very important day. Sonic and Silver were having a boy's day out, and despite my protests, I had to help Blaze buy some baby supplies. During the five years, she and Silver had gotten engaged, and she was now 7 months pregnant. Her belly bulged out of her coat, making it a little more noticeable. I may not have known much about babies, but I did know they required lots of love and attention, so I was willing to help support Blaze and Silver in their upcoming endeavor. Ever since Sonic and I got married, I had been so happy. Rarely did the thoughts of previous events invade my mind, and it was good that they never did. Five years ago, my town of Spagonia was attacked by Doctor Robotnik. During those attacks, my old friend and crush, Zooey Reddfoxe was killed. The anniversary was coming up in a month or so, and I had to go back to Spagonia and pay my respects. My head drooped and my eyes began to water, as memories of my time with Zooey and the rest of my friends came flooding back. Blaze saw this and was concerned.

"Hey, Tails? Are you okay?" She asked.

I nodded yes, but that was a lie. I was feeling quite depressed and needed something to occupy myself with. As if by magic, we just so happened to be at the store. Walking inside, we were greeted with a gust of warm, cozy air.

"Wow, what a big store! How could anyone find what they need in here?" I asked myself.

"No need for concern, I brought a list of things we'll need. All I need you to do is grab the stuff and place them into the shopping cart. And push the shopping cart. I'll handle the rest." Blaze said.

I sighed deeply as Blaze dug the list out of her pocket. It was pretty long, so I knew I was in for an absolute treat. The first item on her list was five packs of diapers. That would be in aisle #7. I grabbed a shopping cart and pushed it there. Blaze walked beside me.

"So, what have you and Sonic been up to?" She asked.

I was surprised. Blaze was not the type of person to initiate a conversation.

"Me and Sonic? Ahh, nothing much. Just hanging out around the city. Sonic's got a job now. Mailman. Go figure."

Blaze nodded and smiled, showing her little fangs. Immediately, my mind flashed back to when we had first met. I was getting revenge on Robotnik for what he had done to me, and Blaze saved me from certain death. When she saved my life, she smiled the whole time. Finally, we had come across aisle #7, and it was quite crowded. Plenty of expecting parents rushing around to supply their upcoming child's needs. Blaze was having none of it.

"There are so many people here! We can't just wait our turn; it'd take too long!" I said to her. She nodded in agreement.

"Just push through all of 'em. We don't have time for this." Blaze said.

She grabbed hold of the shopping cart and ran forward. People were being pushed to the side, left and right. I apologized to each person as we tore down the aisle. Stopping right in front of a large group of diaper packages, Blaze wiped her brow and sighed. She was panting.

"Wow, that was something. I probably shouldn't do that again. AH!"

Blaze doubled over and held her protruding belly in pain. I rushed over to help.

"Blaze, are you alright? Should we call Sonic and Silver?" I asked her. Her face was twisted in a pained expression.

"No, no. I'm fine. Let's just get this over with."

I grabbed the five diaper packs and put them inside the cart. We continued onto the next item and the next one, and soon the list was complete. It was quite a lot of stuff.

"Well, we're done. I think we might need the guys' help with this." Blaze said.

I agreed. We walked up to the cashier and paid for the items. It was well over one-hundred Rings' worth. I pulled my phone out of my pocket and dialed Sonic's number. It rang for a bit, then someone picked up.

"Heya, buddy! What's up?" Sonic asked.

That voice of his still made my heart melt, even after five years of hearing it.

"Blaze and I are finished with all the shopping, so we need you and Silver to come help us," I told him.

I heard Silver's voice in the background.

"Heyyyy baby! Me and Sawnik had a fuuuun time today! *hic*"

Blaze's face instantly turned to a look of confusion.

"We'll be right there, Tails. Stay where you are." Sonic hung up.

"Was that Silver just now? He sounds...weird." Blaze said.

I shrugged my shoulders. What was up with Silver? Suddenly, I heard the sound of an airburst, and Sonic materialized in front of me. I yelped and my heart rate skyrocketed.

"AH! Sonic, I thought we agreed that you wouldn't use your speed like that! You scared me!" I told him.

"Ah, you worry too much. I got here as soon as I could." Sonic opened his arms wide and came in for a hug. I laid my head against his warm, furry chest, feeling his heartbeat deep within. Just then, Silver, using his psychokinesis, floated into the store. He stumbled and fell to the ground, landing face first.

"Silver! Babe, are you okay?"

Blaze rushed over to the downed hedgehog and flipped him over. His pupils were dilated, and he smelled funny.

"Sonic, where did you guys go?" Blaze asked.

Sonic scratched the back of his head while laughing.

"Oh, us? We went to...uh...we went to the mall!" He said.

"Nooo, we went to dat club place! Don't you remember dat, Sawnik? I had looooots of apple juice! Hehehe!"

Just then, it dawned on us. They had gone out to drink. Sonic facepalmed, as he realized that the drunk Silver was going to be a pain in his tail.

"Oh Silver, what am I going to do with you? Alright, here's what we'll do. Tails and Sonic can go ahead of us with the bags, and Silver and I will be there in a bit." Blaze said.

Sonic grabbed three bags, and I grabbed another three. While Blaze was trying to obtain control over drunk Silver, me and Sonic dashed off.

"Sonic, how could you do that? You know Silver hasn't had alcohol before! What'd you let him have?" I said. Sonic's brow furrowed as he tried to remember what Silver had drunk. Then, it came to him.

"Oh, that's right! He ordered a big glass of fresh Lava Reef Lager. Haha!"

My eyes widened.

"You let him have what? That's some of the most potent beer out there! You're so irresponsible sometimes…" I shouted. Sonic looked at the ground and slumped over.

"I was just trying to show him a good time. I know he's the 'better safe than sorry' type of person, so I was just trying to teach him that having a bit of fun is okay."

I saw that my yelling at Sonic had hurt his feelings a bit.

"You know what? I understand what you were trying to do. Wanted to give him a time to remember. I respect that. Love you, Sonic."

We kept running to Blaze and Silver's house. It wasn't too far away. Like blue and orange bolts of lightning, we both thundered down the street and screeched to a halt in their driveway.

"Do you have a key? We can't just let this stuff sit out here!" I asked Sonic. He dug into his pants and grabbed a bundle of keys. There were at least 15 of them on one ring. He tried them all inside the keyhole.

"Which one is it?" he asked himself.

Finally, Sonic came upon one last key, and that was the correct one. The door opened quietly and we stepped inside. Their house was nice and tidy, with a couch in the middle of the living room and a TV on the wall. We dropped the boxes on the floor beside the door and closed it. Sonic locked it and took out his phone. He began to type.

"Just...got to...your house. Dropped...the boxes off...No sweat."

He sent the text and put his phone back in his pocket.

"Well, now it's time for us to get back home. We can have some good alone time together. Whaddya say to that?" Sonic asked. I smiled and my eyes lit up.

"Yeah, I'd like that. Let's go!"

We dashed away, leaving Blaze and Silver's house behind.
