Chapter 4: Fox on A Plane
(sorry for the shorter chapter today! I was kinda burned out.)
The wind blew hard against us, but still the Tornado pressed through. The jet engine worked wonderfully, propelling us through otherwise detrimental conditions. I looked over the edge of the plane and saw that we were flying over West Side Island. It's beautiful palm trees barely visible in the murky clouds. I felt the vibrations of the plane throughout my whole body, and it felt relaxing.
"So, how are ya liking it so far? Not too shabby eh, Tails?" Sonic asked.
I could barely hear him over the roar of the wind in my ears.
"Yeah, this is great! How long until we get there?"
Sonic looked at the watch on his wrist.
"I think we have about an hour to go! For now, let's close the roof, shall we?"
Sonic flipped a switch on his dashboard, and a glass dome rose up to cover us from the outside. He turned the heater on, and soon it was nice and toasty. Outside, lightning flashed through the clouds, illuminating them. I was terrified.
"AH! Sonic, I'm afraid of lightning!" I screamed.
I curled my body into a ball on the seat and I shivered. Sonic looked behind him and laid his hand on me.
"Aw, c'mon buddy. It'll be okay. I'm right here with you. Nothing to be afraid of."
He rubbed my fur softly.
"Are you sure?" I asked him.
"Yeah, I'm sure. You can't get hurt when you're with me. C'mon, uncurl yourself." he said.
I did as instructed and uncurled my body. My ears involuntarily twitched.
"There's my Tails. Now, I gotta get back to flying the plane. You'll be alright?" he asked me.
I nodded yes, and he turned back around, gripping the steering wheel with both gloved hands.
"I love you, Tails. Don't you forget that."
I blushed.
"I won't. Love you too, Sonic."
The plane continued on the same path, straight for the floating island. During this time, I thought back at the many times Sonic had helped me over the years. Even when we first met, he opened his door to me and his hospitality was unmatched. When I was sick, he took me to the doctor, or those times when I felt sad, he would cheer me up. Even though I was an adult, I still had a childlike nature. And so did he. We embraced that fact with all of our hearts and made the best of it.
The vibrations from the plane were soothing, and my eyes drooped. Faster than I knew it, I had fallen asleep.
Later…
The Tornado kept chugging along. The storm had gone away, and the night was in full swing. I had just awoken from my nap, still rubbing the fatigue from my eyes.
"*yawn* How much longer?" I asked Sonic.
He pointed in front of us. There, the Island stood. Beautiful waterfalls cascading off its edges, large mountains in the back, abandoned marble structures. It was an awesome sight.
"There it is. We're about to land." he said.
I stretched my thin, furry arms and yawned yet again. Sonic lowered the plane's throttle and flew around, looking for a suitable landing spot. Soon enough, he found a cleared patch of grass. The plane descended and the wheels touched the ground. We rolled to a stop, and Sonic turned off the engine. The propeller blades stopped spinning abruptly. He hopped out and surveyed the surroundings. A lush forest, a lake, a few boulders. Using my twin namesakes, I fluttered down and landed next to him.
"Another flawless landing." said Sonic. He reached into the back compartment and pulled out a whole bunch of stuff. A tent, a machete, matches, water bottles, guns and ammo, and lots of other stuff.
"Well, we're all set. Whaddya say me and you go to sleep now?"
My eyes were still droopy.
"Yeah, I think that's a good idea." I said.
We quickly put up the tent and climbed in. It wasn't too comfortable, but I didn't care about comfort.
"You're a great pilot, Sonic. Good night." I said.
He kissed my nose, causing more red to flush over my face.
"Hehe, thanks. Good night, Tails."
There we slept for the rest of the night.
