Chapter 7: The Garden of Alabaster

We dropped to the ground and rolled down a steep hill. There were abandoned marble structures everywhere.

"What are these buildings? What kind of place is this?" I asked myself.

Sonic screeched to a halt and surveyed the landscape around us. There were tall ice-covered mountains in the far distance, and more abandoned structures as far as the eye can see.

"I dunno where we are, but we'd better get a move on. Who knows where Robotnik's gonna show up next!" he said.

Sonic sped down the hill, and I followed him. We dodged traps and robots all around. At one point, we came across a weird trap that consisted of a metal pole and a huge spike ball attached by a chain. The spike ball swung around the pole and made a weird sound.

"Y'know, I wonder how Blaze and Silver are doing right about now. I don't think they'd ever imagine that we're here right now." I told Sonic.

Fortunately for us, we needn't worry about them for the moment. They were presumably safe at home, resting after a long day before.

This place was oddly beautiful. A serene forest dotted with marble ruins. The wind rustled the leaves of the trees around us, and a few leaves rained down onto the ground. All of a sudden, Sonic stopped running.

"Can we stop here? I'm pretty hungry, and besides, look at this beautiful environment!" he asked.

I took off the backpack full of supplies and dropped it to the ground.

"Yeah, I guess we could stop here. I'm pretty hungry too."

We both sat down in a cleared out spot surrounded by piles of fallen leaves. Opening the bag, I saw that there were many food items inside, but I settled for a sandwich. Sonic chose a chili dog, as per usual.

"Isn't this island such a wonderful place? It's a shame we can't ever tell anyone we were here." I said.

I inched my body closer to Sonic's and laid my head on his shoulder.

"You got that right! If I could live here, I'd do it without a second thought. Watch over the whole planet just from my backyard! And of course, I'd share that life with the guy of my dreams…" he said.

He held his hand out, which I grabbed. Our fingers interlocked.

"Heh. I'd like that, but we can't exactly uproot our entire lives and move to an unheard-of mysterious floating island 6 miles in the air! Why don't we just get this thing over with and settle down?"

Sonic nodded in agreement and laid his head against a nearby rock. He breathed slowly and sighed. I laid next to him, just basking in the warmth of the Sun.

"Hey, Tails? Do you think I made a mistake?" Sonic asked.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean, did I make a mistake in accepting the offer to come here, to this island? What happened in that last zone was horrible. I could've lost you. If I had, I might've… Ah, nevermind." he said.

"I understand why you did what you did. It's okay. The world is under threat, and you did what a hero does. I'm proud of you. Whatever may happen on this island, be sure to remember that I will always be at your side. We'll help each other through this. Do you remember what you said when we got married? Til death do us part?" I asked him.

He nodded.

"Well then, don't break that promise! You don't give up on anything you do. See it through to the end. No matter what it is. This is one of those moments. We have been sought after by the leader of the country to defend it. There is no greater honor. So let's do this."

I hugged him tightly, as tears formed in my eyes.

"I love you, Sonic the Hedgehog."

"And I love you, Miles Prower."

I planted a small kiss on his neck and laughed a little. My life had turned around for the better, and I didn't want it to end. He dragged me down, all the while laughing. His face was mere centimeters from mine. His emerald green eyes glistened in the late afternoon sunlight.

"I see you, sneaky fox. Ehehe... I don't quite think you know how much I just wanna... Ah, forget it."

Without missing a beat, he grabbed my face between his gloved hands and placed his lips upon mine. Our eyes closed simultaneously, as we enjoyed that moment of raw emotion.

"Wha-? What was that?" I asked.

"Just something to think about until we get home. That's where I'll show you what I'm really made of. Anyway, whaddya say we keep on going? We should be outta here soon." Sonic asked.

I nodded yes and gathered our stuff into the bag. Soon enough, we were off. The rest of the zone wasn't too hard to navigate, and pretty quickly, we had arrived at the foothills of those distant mountains. "Looks like this is it. Gotta go up from here." Sonic said.

I jumped into the air and began to spin my twin tails like helicopter rotors. Sonic grabbed my hands and we began our journey up and over. Suddenly, the sound of maniacal laughter from behind.

"Ahahah! Wasn't expecting to see you here! Too bad I won't ever see you again! Oh wait, that's a good thing!"

It was Robotnik. Again. This time, he was sitting inside of a transportation pod with drills on it. Pressing a single button, the drills activated, and he flew toward us.

"Tails, go as fast as you can!" Sonic said.

"Really? That's exerting a bit too much eff-"

"Just do it!"

I flew forward, in an attempt to get away from the evil doctor. He descended lower than us, temporarily out of sight, then suddenly, came rushing at us from below. The spinning drills were close to spearing us.

"Tails! I'm gonna try something! It's gonna be risky!"

He jumped out of my hands and slammed into Robotnik's cockpit. The glass shattered, exposing him to the open air.

"Argh! Stupid hedgehog! Get over here!"

But he had no chance. Sonic's spiky body sliced right through the metal armor and left the Doctor red in the face. He flew away in a rage.

"You did it! Alright! Let's get going, shall we? I'm getting tired..." I told him.

I descended and grabbed his hands. Moving upward, I could almost see the top of the mountain.
