The two figures stood atop the building, looking out over the city. One stood tall, a thick cloak wrapped around his shoulders, the heavy fabric barely moving as the gentle wind pulled at the pair. He doffed the hood and looked down at the shorter of the two, inspecting him.
The boy, for he was little more than a boy, stood slightly hunched, nervously looking around and mumbling to himself, falling silent the moment his Sire's gaze fell upon him. In stark contrast to the man, he wore simple clothing, bright red, if slightly worn out, trainers, a pair of tracksuit pants and a white t-shirt that had the kanji for "Gym Shirt" on the front.
With a flap of his cloak, the taller of the two turned to his charge and spoke.
"I wish for you to get from this rooftop to that rooftop."
"W-what?" the boy gasped, looking across the street to the other building his Sire was pointing at, a look of shock on his face.
"You may do so however you wish," the man continued, unperturbed, "I shall await you there."
And with that he was gone, vanishing into the air as though he had dissolved, leaving only the youth standing in the cool breeze.
Izuku stared at the place his Sire had occupied only moment before, flabbergasted that the man had seemingly just abandoned him on a rooftop late at night. Looking back across the street, he blinked as he saw the figure standing in the opposite roof, the older man giving him a casual wave as he walked back from the edge.
"What?" Izuku muttered, as he walked over to the edge of the building, freezing slightly as he looked over the short wall.
He swallowed, hopping back a few meters, trying to psyche himself up. He could do this. He'd only had his quirk for a month, and already he was leagues stronger than he had been. He could totally do this. And he ran. His feet skidded across the surface of the roof as he fell backwards, clutching desperately at the loose stones. His feet banged into the short barrier, almost sliding over the edge as he finally managed to make some kind of purchase and stop himself.
What the hell had he just been trying to do? He almost jumped off a roof. Of a damn ROOF! Regardless of how strong he'd gotten, there was no way he'd ever manage to clear an entire street in a single jump. Fighting back the sobs, he scrambled to his feet, hand clutched over his mouth as his stomach threatened to disgorge its contents.
Slowly, he staggered to the door, opening it slowly and making his way down the stairs. He was shivering as he crossed the road, the last of the adrenalin from almost throwing himself off a building fading, drawing strange and concerned looks from the surrounding pedestrians. He staggered into the other building, trudging up the stairs as he finally reached the opposite roof, the door opening for him as his Sire stood silently.
"I…I'm sorry…" he choked, a sense of shame and disappointment washing over him, "I…I couldn't…"
"Couldn't what?" the man asked, his voice flat and stern.
"I…I couldn't get across," Izuku mumbled.
"And yet here you are," Sire hummed, producing a thermos from his cloak and handing it to the young Vampire, "You did exactly as I asked. You got from one rooftop to the other."
"What?" Izuku gasped, looking at the thermos in his hands incredulously, "But…but I didn't use your… my quirk."
"And that was the exact reason for this lesson," Sire hummed as he watched the teen grimace, before taking a swig from the thermos, "Quirks are not everything."
"But Sire-san, quirks are…"
"Not everything," the man repeated, "And you have learnt that tonight. You realized, almost to late, might I add, that your quirk was not enough to allow you to complete my task. And so, you took the safer, more logical option. You have, for lack of a better word, passed."
Izuku just stared at the man in a mixture of shock and awe, the older Vampire just giving him a soft smile before continuing.
"Though that does not mean you will be neglecting the art of jumping from roof tops. I believe it is called "Parkour" in this age?"
