It was my first time outside of La Push since I had moved. Chaz passed the test of meeting my grandparents, and we made it to the theatre just in time for the 8 PM showing of "Facepunch". Since it was just the movies, I chose to wear a pair of my favorite skinny jeans, and an oversized sweater to keep me warm, with my brown ankle boots.
"What?! So, you mean to tell me that you would choose flying over mind-reading as a superpower?!" I asked. Chaz and I spent the entire ride to Port Angeles debating on which superpower would be best, and we were both on opposite ends of the topic.
"I would never have to pay for another plane ticket again. And, I could fly to your place any time and show off how cool I am, and maybe steal you for a romantic sightseeing adventure around Forks." I blushed at the thought.
Chaz purchased our tickets and some snacks for us to share, and we made our way into the theatre, continuing our ongoing superpower debate.
PAUL POV
"So, you're going to confess your love to Y/N by stalking her? I think this is probably one of the worst ideas you've ever had Paul, and you've had some pretty bad ones." I rolled my eyes at Jared's assumption.
"I'm not confessing my love. I just want to make sure she's ok. You'd do the same thing if YOUR imprint were out on a date with the school brown-noser."
Embry chimed in as we continued walking up to the front of the theatre, keeping high alert in case Y/N and Chaz were still hanging outside– "Paul, the entire pack knows you like Y/N. You're not so great at hiding your thoughts-"
"Would you two just shut it? Now, when we get in here, just follow my lead, got it?" They nodded, and we finished purchasing our tickets and made our way inside the dark theatre.
There weren't a lot of people inside which made the mission a bit riskier since we could easily be spotted if we weren't careful. I could smell the scent of rose and lavender and knew it was Y/N. I wondered if she was thinking of me. Was she having fun? More fun than with me? Toward the middle of the theatre, I spotted Y/N and Chaz sitting and engaging in the pre-movie trivia happening on the big screen. I made my way over to the row of seats off to the side in the very back of the theatre, and Jared and Embry followed.
"Now what?" Jared asked. I had completely ignored question when I heard Y/N's beautiful laugh. I couldn't help but smile at the thought of how happy she was, but I knew I wasn't the one bringing her the current joy, and that killed me.
"Earth to Paul. Man, this imprint has got you good." Jared threw his head back and snickered.
"Let's go." The three of us stood up and shuffled out of the theatre and back into the lobby.
"Alright, I'm starving. Come on Em, let's go get a snack before we go." Jared and Embry headed over to the concession stand, and I took a seat on a nearby bench just outside of the theatre room while I waited for them, and let my head fall into my hands, still thinking of Y/N.
I know I can make her just as happy, or happier than Chaz could. Maybe I just needed to admit it- I was in love with –
"Paul?" My head shot up at the sound of Y'N's voice. "Paul, what are you doing here?" She was smiling, but I could see the confusion on her face. She looked beautiful, although she considered herself average. I didn't want to take my eyes off of her.
"Oh, hey…Y/N. I was uh, just..uh…how's your date?" I mentally kicked myself at the lack of a prepared answer.
"I asked you a question first, Paul. What are you doing here? Did you bring Chelsea?" Y/N knew me so well, and I knew there was no point in lying to her.
"Well, not exactly. I brought Jared and Embry with me. Chelsea cancelled on our plans, and I really wanted to see 'Facepunch', so…here we are." Jared and Embry were making their way towards us from the concession stand, right on cue.
"Hey Y/N!" they both spoke in unison.
"Hey guys! Coming in to watch the movie?"
"Oh, no, we were just leav-" I shot Embry an angry look. Idiot.
"Leaving? The movie hasn't even started yet. I thought you said you really wanted to see it, Paul?" I tried to steer clear of the look of suspicion in her eyes, but before I could try to clean up Embry's slip up, the theatre door opened and a new voice interrupted.
"Y/N, everything okay?" Chaz rushed up to Y/N while keeping a harsh glare toward me.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Sorry, Chaz."
"You know these guys?" He asked. I knew Y/N had been keeping her friendship with us a secret in order to avoid any pressing questions from Chaz, but now, she had nowhere to hide.
"Yes, I do…Or, at least, I thought I did." I could see the disappointment in her eyes as she glanced at me and then to the floor. Why did I lie to her?
"Well, we better get back inside. The movie is about to start." Y/N shifted her eyes from the floor back up to me before saying goodbye and heading back into the theatre room.
This was the worst idea I had ever had.
READER POV
I fought back the tears building up in my eyes. Paul and I had made so much progress in our friendship, and I was disgusted that he felt the need to lie to me about something so…STUPID. I knew why he had come to the theatre and dragged Embry and Jared along with him. He was spying on me and Chaz. Part of me was flattered and excited about his curiosity, but the other part of me knew I had to get him back. If he wanted to lie and be jealous, two could play at that game.
"You know, those guys are really great. Definitely not a gang. More of a brotherhood. You should hang out with all of us some time." I could see the slight fear in Chaz's eyes.
"You'd be there, right?" He asked with a slight flirty tone.
"Of course. In fact, we're all heading to the beach tomorrow. I'd love for you to come with me so I could introduce you to everyone." I smiled up at him again before adjusting myself into a comfortable position and focusing on the movie.
PAUL'S POV
"Why didn't you guys talk me out of it? You should have told me to not come here! God, I'm an idiot!" I felt beyond stupid for lying to Y/N. I should've told her how I felt. But then, as always, Chaz comes and ruins the whole mood.
"We DID try to stop you! Remember?!" Jared spoke up.
I knew what I had to do. I needed to make things better with Y/N. We were only a few blocks away from the theatre and I felt awful for leaving Y/N so upset. Seeing the sadness in her eyes crushed my heart and made me feel sick to my stomach. We headed back to the reservation, and after dropping Jared and Embry off at Emily's, I headed home to think.
I paced back and forth in my room debating with myself on how I was going to confess my love to Y/N. But first, I needed to break the news to Chelsea. I picked up my phone and sent a text to her phone-
We need to talk.
It was getting late, so I figured we could talk before everyone had arrived at the beach tomorrow. We were growing apart anyway, and I no longer felt the same way about her ever since Y/N had come into my life. But, I had never cheated on any of the girls I had dated. And just because I was known to be a ladies man, didn't mean I had to be a jerk about it. Being straightforward with Chelsea and breaking up was the only way.
I went to bed rehearsing my plan over and over again before finally falling asleep.
THE NEXT DAY
PAUL POV CONTINUED
The next morning I had woken up feeling a little nervous for the day ahead. I turned to my bed side table to check my phone. Still no response from the text I had sent to Chelsea last night. I slowly rolled myself out of bed and began getting ready for the day.
I headed down to the beach with Jared and Kim, but didn't mention my plan to them. I knew they would be supportive, but my nerves kept me quiet most of the way to the beach.
When we arrived, Sam, Emily, Leah and Seth were already setting up an area for all of us to hang. We made our way down near the water and waited for more of the pack to show up. Any time I saw a car pulling in, my stomach would tense up at the possibility of seeing Y/N.
"Don't worry, Paul. She'll be here" Kim assured. I gave her a slight smile, still feeling nervous.
After what felt like forever, I finally saw Y/N's car pull up in the parking lot. The grin that spread across my face couldn't be helped, and I didn't bother hiding it from the pack.
But, wait a second. There was another person with her. My smile dropped instantly at the tall, familiar figure that appeared from the passenger side.
Chaz.
What the hell was he doing here? He once again was ruining everything!
They made their way down to where the rest of us were seated, and everyone greeted Y/N with smiles and waves. She introduced Chaz to everyone, leaving me for last.
"And, this is Paul. You know, the guy from the movie theatre last night." Chaz held out his hand for me to shake, but I turned my face away to act as though I hadn't seen it.
Y/N rolled her eyes and walked with Chaz to the opposite side near Kim and Emily, and began filling them in about her perfect date with Chaz the night before. I felt myself getting angry, but I held it together now that an outsider was present.
"Who wants to play some soccer? Paul? Jake? Chaz? You guys in?" Sam asked.
Y/N encouraged Chaz to play, and I knew this was my time to show off. I checked my phone again, but still no response from Chelsea. I decided to play one game before calling her to see where she was.
The teams were split up with Jake, Quill, Jared, Chaz and Seth on one team, and me, Sam, Leah, and Embry on the other. Quill and Embry were chosen as goalies for each team, and the game began with the winner being the team who could make 3 goals.
After a while, we were tied, 2 and 2. It was a tough game, and Chaz was actually really good. I was getting frustrated with how long it was taking for our team to get a goal, and I didn't want Chaz to embarrass me infront of Y/N.
Sam kicked the ball to Leah who kicked it over to me before Jake could steal it away from her. I followed the ball down toward Quill, ready to make a goal. I was in the perfect position to kick the ball just out of Quills reach. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Chaz. He sped up beside me and blocked my shot just as I went to score. I watched as the ball rolled out of bounds, and before I knew it, I grabbed Chaz by his shirt and threw him down on the ground.
"PAUL!" I heard Sam yell, but I was already seeing red. I was pissed, and I couldn't stop myself now that I had started. My body was uncontrollably shaking and I could feel myself snarling at the fragile wimp as I stood over him.
"PAUL, calm down..NOW!" Sam yelled again.
The pack rushed over to help Chaz up and remove him from the situation. My breathing became harsh and more frequent. I couldn't stop, and I couldn't calm myself down. All I could think about was that brownnoser trying to one up me infront of MY imprint. My eyes scanned my surroundings before landing on Y/N who was now standing infront of me, placing her hands on my face.
"Paul, please calm down. You can't shift out here. You have to calm down." Her voice was so soothing. I felt myself slowly coming down from my angry high, and my shaking was settling down as well. But, it wasn't enough. I was still at risk of shifting if I couldn't calm down more.
I could see the fear and worry in Y/N's eyes. Without overthinking it, Y/N pulled my face to hers and our lips met. They fit perfectly against one another. It was the most perfect kiss I had ever had, and everything around us was nonexistent in the moment. My eyes closed as I took in the moment with Y/N and nothing mattered to me anymore except for this. The shaking had completely stopped in my body, and my heavy breathing returned to a normal pace. The kiss seemed to last an eternity, but I wasn't complaining. I pulled her in closer to me, and pressed harder into the kiss.
We finally pulled away from each other and our eyes met. We shared a look of surprise, and I wanted to bring her back to me.
"What the hell, Paul?"
I finally broke my gaze away from Y/N's to see Chelsea. Her arms were crossed in front of her chest and her eyes were filled with rage. "Was this what you wanted to talk to me about?" she accused.
I had no words. I had never cheated on any girl I had dated, but I knew what this looked like. But it wasn't what she thought. I couldn't explain that to Chelsea. She didn't know about shape shifintg, and she couldn't know.
I looked back down at Y/N who had torn away from the grasp of my arms. Why did she bring Chaz here? My entire plan was ruined, and now I looked like a cheater. A cheater!
My non-response to Chelsea was too much for her, and she whipped back around, heading back up the beach to her car.
"Chelsea, wait!" I called out after her. I looked back down at Y/N with an angered look. If she hadn't brought Chaz, none of this would have happened. Everything would have went according to plan.
I ran after Chelsea, leaving Y/N and the rest of the pack behind.
This was not part of the plan.
