Haha... what should have Daddy wolf done?
I suppose it wouldn't matter either way.
'... wait, Adam? Are you kidding me? Adam Coleman, Right?'
'Conclusively. We found his Literal ID. We also ran dental. Sorry Terry… It took me a moment to remember who Adam was… and when I realized it I wanted to come and tell Rock myself. I'd hate for him to hear it over the news… I know they're good friends.'
'Mary, I don't think it's a good time to tell him...'
It was 6PM, Monday afternoon, and Rock had just finished taking a three hour exam - which he had almost certainly failed. The test was hard, but what was even harder was the realization that Adam hadn't shown up at the midterm.
'Huh? What do you mean, babe? Adam is Rock's best friend. He deserves to know… I was the head of the investigation, and I closed the case. I should be the one wh-'
'Mary… you know the business card for Heinlein? Rock gave that to me… that bastard came to Rock asking if he wanted revenge for his mom. He said no… but if he realizes Geese killed his best friend too…'
Adam would show up to a Midterm with a broken leg… he'd done it before. This guy took his academics seriously. He would die before he missed an exam. Rock had a way of worrying himself into the worst case scenario… but even his imaginings weren't nearly as bad as what he was hearing as he stood on the balcony outside his apartment.
'He's a hotheaded kid, Mary. He doesn't seem that way, but the moment he hears this, he'll either go looking for Kain, or head up Geese Tower himself. Rock's strong, but right now he's still immature. I don...'
The air was stale and silent. The wind was dry, and blasted down the street - whipping through Rock's bangs and stinging his eyes. He leaned into the rough stucco and stared at his feet as he strained his ears and listened. He felt his cheeks grow slick with immature tears.
'He's going to find out eventually. He's an adult. I know you care for him, but when he finds out, what will he think of you?'
'Mary. Promise me. Just until this Geese thing is over. Just a week, right? That's what the Sheriff said. Rock will get the news a week late, and he'll just have to deal with it. He'll be mad, but...'
There weren't many authority figures in Rock's life. He didn't have many mentors. He didn't need many. His father was sufficient for him… but not today. Dad… Dad wanted the best. He always did. But right now, Rock wasn't thinking about what was best for himself. He was thinking of all the good years he spent with Adam Coleman. All the stupid pranks. All the late nights. His best friend who stuck as close as a brother…
And now… Adam had been murdered.
What kind of friend would Rock be if he didn't do anything about it? Revenge? Childish rebellion? Was he really considering something so antiquated? Rock had seen the movies. He knew revenge didn't get you anywhere. He knew it in his head…
But in his heart… he wanted to tear Geese limb from limb.
Was he right? No. Absolutely not. Rock knew he was eyeing a path he had sworn off of. Anger was tainting his thinking, and he knew it. He wanted it. He wanted it so badly… he needed validation. He needed somewhere to spend the night…
Then tomorrow, he'd make a call.
Rockyyy nooo
