"Happy birthday, your highness!" Marinette awoke to the sound of Alya talking to her.
"Wha-" Marinette started, still half-asleep. "Birthday?"
"Yeah?" Alya shot her a confused look. "You... you didn't seriously forget, did you?"
Marinette chuckled nervously. "Of course not!" She lied.
Alya rolled her eyes as she laughed and walked over to the nearby closet. She quickly pulled out a light pink dress then set it on the bed Marinette was still sitting on.
The brunette grabbed Marinette's hands and pulled the girl out of bed. "C'mon, let's get you ready! You can't just sleep the day away; you've been waiting to turn sixteen since forever!"
Marinette realized she had been transported into another fairy tale, don't get her wrong. Something felt off, though. It felt as though there were clouds surrounding her mind, blocking her thoughts from fully processing. She couldn't think clearly.
She stumbled as Alya pulled her over to the vanity and sat her down. Alya picked up some make-up sitting inside one of the drawers and started applying it to Marinette's face. The bluenette sat there, staring off into space as Alya worked. She only came back to reality when Alya waved her hand in front of her face.
"Princess? Are you okay? You didn't answer my question," Alya informed her, a concerned look on her face.
"Yeah. Yeah, I'm fine. I'm just a little tired," Marinette reassured her, though Alya still looked doubtful.
"If you're sure..." Alya trailed off. "Anyways! Your parents have a huge day planned for you, starting with breakfast. Speaking of that, you're supposed to be down there soon, so I'll leave you to get dressed."
With a wave over her shoulder, Alya exited the room.
Marinette felt like a zombie as she changed into the dress Alya had set on her bed. She felt like she could fall asleep right then and there, but she needed to stay awake so she could figure out what fairy tale she was in this time.
Once she finished changing, she opened her bedroom door to find her way to wherever her parents were, when she heard a voice whispering to her.
Marinette...
The bluenette looked around, trying to find the source of the noise, but spotted nothing.
Marinette...
She was hit with an overwhelming urge to follow the voice. Her gut was telling her to get out fast, but her body didn't listen, slowly following the whisper.
Marinette...
She opened the door that the voice had led her to. She carefully stepped inside, only slightly recognizing that the room was filled to the brim with...
Spinning wheels? Why did that sound familiar?
Marinette frowned, but brushed off the feeling of fear that was growing inside her. She didn't quite know why, but she needed to find who was calling her name.
Marinette...
The voice grew louder. She turned to her right, and inhaled as she took in the object in front of her.
To anyone else, it would have seemed like a normal spinning wheel, exactly the same as all the other wheels in the room.
But to Marinette, it was practically glowing. She felt drawn to it. This, she knew, was the source of the whispers.
She walked closer and closer until she was standing right in front of it.
Marinette...
With that final whisper, Marinette ignored her gut feeling and touched the tip of the spinning wheel, pricking her finger.
That seemed to make her come to her senses, if only for a brief moment. She focused on the blood, slowly making its way down her finger.
It was the last thing she saw as her eyes rolled back in her head.
Adrien was standing in what appeared to be a stable as he opened his eyes. He was taking in his surroundings when he heard his father's voice ask him skeptically, "Are you sure you want this horse? Isn't he known for his bad luck?"
The blond looked over to the horse his father was looking at disapprovingly. It was a black horse with a beautiful midnight-colored mane. What made Adrien smile, though, was the name that was hanging from the stable door.
Plagg
"I have a good feeling about him," Adrien said, smirking to himself.
"A good feeling," his father repeated flatly, "about a horse known for its bad luck. And you want to take it on your journey to save the lost princess. A task that many have tried to do, and have never returned."
"Yes?" Adrien said, though it came out more like a question.
Gabriel rolled his eyes. "Even if you do make it to where the princess is sleeping, there's no guarantee that you'll wake her, you know. The prophecy said she would be awoken with a true love's kiss; what if you are not her true love? This whole thing is incredibly dangerous, Adrien. Are you absolutely sure you want to go through with it?"
Adrien's brain started piecing together what his father had said.
Lost princess, a task known to have been failed by many, sleeping princess, awoken with a true love's kiss?
This was the plot of Sleeping Beauty!
And he would bet his miraculous that Marinette was the Sleeping Beauty of the story.
Remembering his father had asked him a question, Adrien nodded eagerly in his response.
Gabriel sighed, "If you must, I guess I cannot hold you back." He held up a finger, motioning for Adrien to wait a moment, then left the stable briefly. When he returned, he held a basket and offered it over to his son. "Your mother and I packed some supplies. Please, be careful."
Adrien smiled up at his father as he took the basket. "I will, thank you."
With a satisfied nod, his father turned around and left the stable.
The blond glanced down at the basket his father gave him and started to sort through it. Inside, there was a map that labeled the journey he was going to take, a knife, a short supply of food, bottled water, a compass, and a blanket.
He smiled gratefully, but in the back of his mind, he wished his father was as caring back home as he was being here.
Adrien shook that thought away though. His worry didn't need to be about his home life right now, it needed to be about rescuing Marinette.
He knew he couldn't carry the basket for the entire ride, which was bound to be a long one, according to the map, so he unloaded the contents into the pouches on each side of Plagg's saddle.
He opened the stable door and led Plagg outside, mounting the horse once they were under the sky, filled with gorgeous colors from the sunrise.
The blond took a deep breath, then spurred Plagg to make him start moving.
It was time to start his journey.
Adrien knew the ride would be long, but he realized he greatly underestimated the actual length.
He was setting up camp for the night when he looked at the map and compared it to his surroundings, realizing that it would take him a few more days to arrive.
The blond sighed in frustration as he laid in his make-shift bed (who was he kidding, he was just lying on a blanket) and tried to fall asleep. How was he supposed to get back home to help Ladybug fight the akuma if he couldn't get out of this cycle of fairy tales?
Would the cycle ever end? What if he and Marinette kept living through fairy tales forever?
Adrien shook his head. Ladybug would get them out of this mess, with or without him. She was just that amazing.
He had to wonder, though, if time was moving the same back home as it was here in fairy tale land. If so, wouldn't the akuma be captured already? Maybe time was going faster here than there.
It took Adrien a while to fall asleep with his worries racing through his mind, but eventually, he fell into a deep sleep.
On the fourth day of Adrien's journey, they finally arrived at the castle.
If you could even call it that anymore.
The whole place was surrounded by evil-looking plants. Vines curled up around the palace walls and gates. Trees grew taller than a normal tree should, covering up all the windows. Regular bushes that were meant to be decorative had sprouted thorns and had grown to double their normal size.
He looked over at his horse. There was no possible way Plagg would be able to make it through this maze.
"Sorry buddy," Adrien told Plagg as he started to tie the reins to the gate, then hesitated. If he didn't come back, he didn't want Plagg to be permanently stuck there. On the other hand, if he didn't secure that Plagg would stay and he needed to go back after he rescued Marinette, then Plagg might leave. Then it would take so much longer to arrive from where he had come.
He sighed, then pointed at Plagg sternly. "Stay here."
The horse shook his head in a dramatic way, or, at least, as dramatic as a horse shaking his head could be. The blond knew if Plagg was here in kwami form, he would be rolling his eyes, but nonetheless doing what he was told. He only hoped Plagg the horse would do the same.
Grabbing the knife out of the pouch attached to the saddle, Adrien set off into the maze, cutting off any vines and branches that got in his way.
He walked around, occasionally glancing up to check how close he was to getting inside the castle. At one point, he looked up and was farther away than the last time he checked.
He never really enjoyed mazes very much.
Eventually, he reached the entrance of the castle. Adrien had to take his knife and cut through all the vines covering the door before he could even touch the handle.
When he arrived inside, it spooked him to see how still everything was. Unlike the outside of the castle, everything inside looked dead. Even the people who were lying on the floor, asleep, looked like there was no life in them.
That thought scared him a bit. He could barely stand looking at strangers that appeared dead. What if Marinette looked like that too? Adrien didn't want to see his friend in that state.
Taking a deep breath to calm himself down, Adrien started to search the dreary castle in search of Marinette.
About half an hour later, he found himself in front of a door covered with more vines than the front entrance.
He had a feeling Marinette was in here.
Adrien took his knife out once more and worked at cutting the layer of vines away. It took a couple of minutes, but he finally made enough progress to the point where he could open the door.
Adrien took in a sharp breath as he took in the room in front of him.
Highlighted by rays of sun, lying in a bed, in a beautiful pink dress, was none other than Marinette.
He walked over to where she was sleeping, wincing as he saw the peaceful look on her face. The Marinette he knew was always restless; Adrien was sure he'd never seen her so still.
It only added on to the dead feeling that loomed inside the castle, and Adrien did not like that.
His face started turning slightly red as he leaned over her, capturing her lips with his own.
Adrien pulled away as he felt her moving. He looked down at her, still a little red in the face, as she slowly opened her eyes.
Marinette shot him a sleepy, confused look. "What's going on?"
"We're in the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty," Adrien replied. "I just woke you up."
The bluenette frowned as she sat up. "Really? I love this story, why'd I have to be the one to sleep through it all?"
Adrien smirked as he responded, "Well, it is called Sleeping Beauty."
Marinette turned pink and spluttered, "Wha-! That- That doesn't even make sense! You're the one who's a model!"
Adrien wasn't expecting that response, and he bursted out in laughter as the blue light surrounded them once more.
This one was fun to write; these two dorks are just too cute for me to handle.
I was going to do The Princess and the Pea, but I had to change too much of the story to fit the plot to the point where it was no where close to the original fairy tale.
Thanks to the person on who recommended Sleeping Beauty, much appreciated!
Once again, if you have any suggestions for fairy tales or have one that you want to see the dorks live through, let me know! Also, I do plan on doing Beauty and the Beast at some point, but it needs to come later in the story because I have big plans for it.
Lastly, I hope to update this every Monday, but I can't guarantee that a chapter will be uploaded, it's simply a goal I want to achieve.
Anyways, hope you enjoyed!
