CHAPTER ONE

Sarah looked around in panic, the brightness coming as shock after days, maybe even weeks, of darkness. She uncontrollably let out another wail as 'something' handed her over to a 'giant'. She didn't want to deal with this. Her eyesight was incredibly bleary, her body felt like it wasn't hers, uncontrollably moving clumsily with little to no dexterity, most noticeably though, it was cold.

She felt like shit, and she didn't want to deal with this. Sarah is an intelligent woman, she knew she was dead, and has accepted it...so where was she?

She looked around processing what little she could see with her blurry sight, centering on the hazy sight of a woman laying in the middle of the room grunting in pain, surrounded by a fair bit of blood near her lower end. People were swarming all around her carrying water basins and towels.

Suddenly it hit her. She had just been born. With that incredulous thought, Sarah had just had enough time to widen her eyes "WA-", before she was plunged into water.

.

For a short while Sarah thought that she was about to die once more, that her second life was going to be a short one. Sarah thought she was going to drown, her little body struggling and wailing trying to escape the water and the pair of hands that was holding her in, but just as quickly, she was pulled out and wrapped tightly in a soft red towel that still felt a bit rough to her delicate skin. She made a sound of protest but eventually settled, trying to wiggle her small body into a more comfortable position.

'At least she missed the whole process of being born' she thought grimacing, or well, tried grimacing. Her new chubby cheeked baby face just formed some sort of adorable pout.

Inwardly, she knew that she should be panicking more to her situation. But, she felt nothing but acceptance, a bit of annoyance, and a slight hunger. It seems like whatever being that allowed her to get reborn had inputted some calmness and adaptability to her new situation into her. She was grateful for that and for giving her a try on a hopefully more uneventful life than her last. With that she smiled succumbing to tiredness and sleep. Oblivious to her new mother and a crowd of women cooing at her cute, still smiling, sleeping form.

.

.

A few months later, the now newly named Azara took back whatever she said about being grateful to be here. This was utter fucking bullshit. This was a terrible fucking joke. This is not funny, this is so not funny. This has got to be a mistake. Because no. Just. Fuck no.

Maybe she wasn't really dead. Maybe she's just in a coma, with her mind making up this weird scenario. That's the only thing that would explain this-... Her baby self whimpered.

Why?

Well, let's rewind to a few months earlier.

.

Some time ago…

.

Apparently babies do nothing but sleep. A lot.

The first month after her birth has been a haze of sleep and groggy wakefulness and boredom, with people buzzing around her taking care of her needs. She briefly met her new mother, who had kind eyes the color of bright gold and an incredibly lovely smile. Who introduced herself as Ursa. An odd but pleasant name. Who would tickle her to make her giggle, feed her (breastfeeding was gross and terrifyingly embarrassing), and sing to her with a sweet voice. She was quite surprised to connect so easily to the older woman, especially since she was already a reincarnated soul, and technically a full grown adult. But, she had never had a mother in her past life.

In her first life, she was raised by a single dad, who she barely sees, but whom she knows loves her very much. She was mostly raised by her aunt alongside her cousins. Most of her memories of him were from when she was still sixteen, before he died in a mission. He too was a member of the military, Sarah's eyes watered, remembering when she first heard news of his death. She remembered him promising her that it was just a short survey of the area, very safe, that he'll return just in time for her graduation. Sarah remembered standing alone in the ceremony, high school diploma in hand, waiting for a person that will never show up.

There was an ambush, they said. The entire team was peppered with bullets just as they were passing through a valley deep in the jungle-like mountains.

Sarah swallowed hard, his funeral was a somber affair, it was hard to bury the only parent she's ever known. Her mother died shortly after her birth due to complications, her aunt, though she tries her best, has her own family to take care of.

She threw herself into her studies after that, becoming top of her class, and when she came of age, she joined the military as soon as she could. Quickly climbing up to become the number one military engineer. They called her a genius. The driving force behind success after success in battle. Yet she didn't care about what they called her, she paid them no mind, because where she was concerned, she was just doing this in order to take down the one that killed her father. She was in a haze of vengeance, nothing was more important, until she was introduced to her own support team. Those sweet clever imbeciles somehow grew onto her, like a bunch of weeds. They made her realize that, maybe, there was a better purpose to life than all consuming hatred.

They became her comrades, her friends, then her family. Sticking with her through thick and thin. Last she saw them was in the helicopter, on their way home from the base. She wondered if they were somehow reborn like her, or if something went wrong in her own afterlife for her to wake up like this, while they were all together on the other side, searching for her, hoping that she was still alive.

Sarah shook off that depressing train of thought. This is a new life. She would enjoy this new chance as much as she can. That's what her family would've wanted her to do. She looked up to her new mother. Idly wondering what she named her as or if she has already named her at all.

.

Exactly two months after her birth. It was the first time she heard her new mother call her with what she presumes to be her name. Azara.

A beautiful name, a combination of two different names; Azar meaning fire and Zara meaning princess or lady, which also means blossoming flower, splendor, and dawn. She only knew the meanings because of a brief obsession on names during her teenage years. She was particularly interested in a childhood friend's name Azar. Azar, she remembered, was dark haired and pretty with thick bushy eyebrows. Sarah remembered being very close to her, sadly Azar and her family needed to move when they were 9. They shared a tearful goodbye but had lost contact soon after. They had never seen each other ever since.

Zara on the other hand, she came across while searching for her own name. It sounded a bit like her own, but prettier. She used to sulk on why her parents named her something as common as Sarah, instead of spicing it up a bit and making the S into a Z. Her dad would just laugh it off and would tell her she could change it when she's older if she wanted it to be changed so badly.

She never changed it.

It reminded her of him the most.

She also found out why she was named so late. Apparently she was born silent and not breathing, the healers feared that she was a stillborn. Thankfully one of them noticed a barely there pulse. Quickly turning the newborn to rub on her back in a small hope that she would survive, and she did.

Still, they weren't sure that she would survive the month, but her health remained strong and steady. Her new mother was only allowed to name her when she was finally declared steady and fully healthy. And eagerly did when she was finally told the wonderful news.

This was when she first found out she had a twin. An older twin sister, to whom she would be moved to the same room with. Apparently where she had been staying is some sort of medical wing, where healers have been taking care and note of her health the entire time.

Azula wondered how rich her new family really is. She wasn't an idiot. She knew this for a while now, as evidenced from her silk clothes and her mahogany crib, blankets and pillows made from the softest wool and feathers. Her mother, while visiting, always wore dresses made out of flowing silk, smooth velvets and structured brocades. With elegant embroideries from golden threads. There are also nannies ready to care for her needs 24/7. There is even a wet nurse on standby, in case she got hungry when her mother wasn't there. But, one thing she noticed is a recurring theme. Everyone always wore various shades of red, black, and gold. Even her entire surrounding was made up of it.

She wondered why these people seem to have a weird obsession with the color.

Another thing she noticed was the uncommon clothing that everyone wore, the clothes' design seems to be something like the traditional garb from the far east. Yet, these people speak perfect English. There were also tons of different things that were completely in juxtaposition with each other and sometimes even make no sense. 'Huh?' Azara felt a bit confused, but shrugged it off. Though there was a niggling thought at the back of her mind, wondering if she was still on Earth.

.

Azara stared around in boredom as everyone flitted around collecting her things, moving them to the new rooms she will be staying at with her new sibling. A happy face peeked over the side of her crib, Ursa. Carefully, her new mother picked her up, and swept off carrying her. Azara stared in amazement as they walked past gilded hallways, large murals, and intricate tapestries, all with a recurring theme: red, black, and gold. Other colors are few and far in-between.

Just as they were turning a corner, Azara swore she saw an attendant light up a few candles using his fingers, in the last hallway. She shook her head, wondering if she was having delusions, but she was starting to have suspicions as to where she really was.

Stopping in front of a huge elaborately carved door, two guards opened the door for us. Azara could feel Ursa giving a soft appreciative hum, and nodding in thanks at the two men.

Entering the huge room, Azara automatically focused on the two small children inside.

A nanny approached them. "His highness fell asleep exhausting himself running around the room," she said trying to hide an amused grin, gesturing to the small toddler carried by another. "The little princess on the other hand is in her crib, my lady, refusing to sleep," she said with a small frown, just as a small cry is heard coming from the crib. She bowed her head after her report, rushing off to sooth the fussy babe.

'His highness? My lady? Princess? Just where was she?'

Her mother then looked at her smiling. "Come Azara, let me introduce you to your siblings," she said in a soft voice, carrying me near the sleeping toddler. Now that we were closer, I can finally see that the toddler was male. The young boy was adorable, slightly drooling on the shoulder of a nanny, who curtsied the best she could while carrying her new older brother. Azara cooed. Reaching out excited. She never had an older brother before, all her cousins were girls and younger than her, and she was an only child.

"This is your older brother, Zuko." Ursa said, grinning at her antics. Azara paused. Zuko? Wait...this can't be… Her new mother turned her around to help her look into the being inside the crib. A young girl the same age as her stared back with eyes slightly more yellow than Ursa's gold. "And this is your twin, Azula." the dots finally connected in her head. Red surroundings. Golden eyes. A mother named Ursa. Someone lighting a candle with their fingertips. Zuko. Azula. Your highness.

Azara couldn't help it. She screamed. Vaguely noting another baby joining in on her alarmed screech.
