Chapter 2: One week at school.

"Good morning Yugi." Grandpa says cheerfully looking up from his mug containing coffee.
"morning." Is Yugi's curt replay trying to avoid him looking to his face because of the blue mark he is currently sporting there while starting packing his lunch for the day.
"Did you make friends already that you was late home yesterday?" grandpa asks him. Shaking his head during the process but stops soon because the bruise under his eye is a nasty painful one.
"No, I was lost." He lies smoothly while dropping his lunch in his backpack and walk outside without wanting to say anything more. Only to be stopped by grandpa.
"You didn't eat yesterday didn't want to talk to me but I heard you crying, and now you want to walk out without another meal? Please Yugi, what's wrong." He begs him making Yugi wonder, is he really that obvious?
"Nothing is wrong, I need to go before I get detention because I'm late again!" he snaps yanking his arm free and walks towards school guild pouring him because he snapped to his only living family member.
First thing he does is going to his classroom, making sure he has found himself a seat and hoping today goes better than the day before.
How foolish. Today the teachers were complaining about his hair, they told him he needed to put it in a tail, Yugi tried to explain them his hair it too thick to bundled up in a tail. It gave him…… yes you probably already guessed it, another day of detention, and the threat if he didn't bundle it together the next day, they would cut it.
That scared him, hiding his black eye is easy with his hair, but grandpa will most definitely notice it when they remove it. So after school he goes to a store with Egyptian writings on the window, hoping the can help him with finding an elastic band that easily can hold his hair together.
The old lady in the store helps him to her best ability's when she finally comes to the conclusion a ribbon is probably the best option. Together they look, and when they find a few ribbons she shows him ways to bind his hair together without letting it look to feminine.
She also gives him something to rub on his eye, telling him if he ever need help she will be there for him. Thanking her and walking out after he purchased the ribbons, the salve and a pocket knife. He looks towards his watch and see grandpa is going to flip out on him, he was out way longer then he intended to do. Sigh. If he is getting grounded, he must tell him he have detention until next Friday, and that's something he knows will freak his grandfather out more.
He was right, as soon as Yugi walked in the motel-room his grandfather was shouting, demanding him to tell him were he was, and why he didn't call him. Yugi lied again, he told him he discovered an arcade and went inside to explore, the reason why he didn't call was because he lost track of time.
That worked, but he needed to promise him to call him first before going out, grandpa asked Yugi if he had eaten yet, and again Yugi lied, by telling he had eaten at the arcade feeling the weight from his lunchbox still filled with the lunch he packed this morning.
Yugi waved grandpa off and went to bed, with his new pocket knife he cuts his wrist a few times, by looking to his own blood he is remembering Atem and his crimson red eyes before he is satisfied enough to go to sleep
The next morning Yugi made sure he had packed his hairbrush, a small mirror and the ribbons, he looked inside the mirror and saw his eye had still that deep dark spot under it. Sigh. He hopes this works and he can stay out of trouble today.
This went well, he stayed out of trouble for the duration of the week, and today Friday, finally the last day today and then weekend. And as added bonus, four hours on his schedule today, so in five hours he is free, but he is sad his beloved deck still needs to stay until Monday at school before getting it back.
"Morning grandpa, today I'm late again, I need to go to the library for a school subject." He lies for the I don't know how many times he already told grandpa to cover his hopefully last day of detention. And ran out before he even got the chance to say good morning to Yugi.
His grandfather is concerned, Yugi ate breakfast last time on Monday with him, he packs his lunch for school, but when he returns he sees how Yugi dumps the entire lunch in the garbage bin. He also noticed Yugi has a blue mark on his face, but because the boy is avoiding him, he is afraid Yugi is being bullied again.
A block in front of school he bind his hair together and continue his walk to school. He walks into his class bully and she beats him again and doing something worse to humiliate him. Yugi keeps holding his tears when she is looking how he is being beaten up, how her goons drop him when first bell rings, and with hanging head he walk towards my classes and wrestles with himself to pull trough not noticing the band isn't tight enough to hold his hair together.
During class he feels his ribs arche and he is afraid he broke at least one of them, also the breathing causes him trouble and he wonders what is going on with him.
When second hour start, the teacher placed a stool in front of class, he calls Yugi over and orders him to sit down. When Yugi does as told he realises the mistake he made because the ribbon is snapped away and the teacher roughly grabs a bush of hair. Hissing from the used force he bites his scream back and feels how the scissor snips a big bush of his hair away.
In front of his laughing and snickering classmates the teacher cuts Yugi's hair short, and Yugi feeling embarrassed humiliated and the tears are streaming freely down his cheeks wondering why because he did as they told him, he managed to bundle his hair together every day, so how?
But wait it must have happened during the beating this morning, he realises and everything he bottled up the past week is threatening to come out.
When the teacher is ready he orders Yugi to sit back on his seat, but he doesn't realise Yugi is in some kind of blind rage, Yugi takes his backpack, walks to the teacher's desk and rips open the draw, take out his belt with his cards and without further words he runs out slamming the door shut with a loud bang. He knows he needs to do this before he kills himself.
Wandering around outside not exactly knowing where to go and wondering what to tell grandpa about what happened. He avoid looking into the glass reflections, afraid for what he sees.
His feet drag him towards the same store he went to a few days ago, and without thinking he walk inside. The store lady sees him and before he realise it himself he runs towards her falling in her arms and crying like a child in her arms rambling about how terrible his life became when grandpa and he moved over towards here.
She guides Yugi to the back and helps him laying down on a couch, then she walks back to the front and closes the store. When she returns she holds two mugs of tea in her hand, giving Yugi one. With gratitude he take the offered mug and takes a tiny sip. Closing his eyes enjoying the rich flavours of sweets hitting his taste buds. A soft smile appearing on Yugi's face.
"What did they do with your beautiful hair Yugi?" she asks him what makes Yugi tear up again, but to his best ability he tries to explain her what happened at school since he started this Monday and how his class mentor cut his hair today the way it is now. He explained her he pulled his hair in the same tail she taught him to do so but apparently when he was beaten up this morning, it wasn't enough. He told her everything how he is feeling since they left Japan, how he started cutting himself and even shows her the wounds he inflicted himself.
She listened to him, gives him comfort but she also confused him in a way. She looks so familiar to him, but she also seems to be in a great deal of pain, and she knows his name while he remembering he never told her before. When he wants to ask her his phone is ringing. Seeing the caller id is grandpa he takes a deep sigh before swiping the green phone to the right and answers.
"Expelled within the first week, give me one good reason why I can look for a new school for you and hope you don't get kicked out within a week again! Where are you young man you are grounded until the next millennia!" grandpa shouts in the phone which makes him freeze, never did he heard him like this. The woman takes the phone out Yugi's hand when she sees the boy is paralysed, and takes the liberty to talk with grandpa, Yugi is too shocked to hear what she is telling him.
"He will be here shortly, and you need to tell him what happened Yugi. Only then he will understand." She says.
"How do you know my name?" Yugi ask her.
"That's for later to discuss. Now relax." She says handing him a cap so he can hide his head.
Only five minutes after the lady pressed the end button on the phone, there is someone knocking on the door, Yugi prepares himself for a spanking he never received from grandpa before. Because he obviously pushed him to the limit.
Grandpa walks in and sees Yugi sitting with his knees against his chest and the cap placed in a way to hide the black eye he is still sporting. "Talk!" is the only thing he says towards his grandson.
"They bullied me from the moment I walked in." Yugi says softly.
"And what did they do what made you walk out only five days after you started there!" grandpa demands.
Yugi tries to tell him, but the words can find the way, grandpa knows how much his grandson loves his own unique hairstyle, how he is always telling proudly it makes him appear taller. But because Yugi can't find the words, he take off the cap instead with tears swimming in his eyes.
To say grandpa is shocked is the least, he is furious. "Who did this?"
"My mentor." Yugi whisper out terrified and ready to shit his pants if his grandfather starts to flip out completely.
"And the eye?" grandpa demands.
"A classmate. She punched me in the face since the very first day! She stomped me in my stomach and grabbed me down there to check if I was really a boy and repeating it every time during lunch today they even pulled my pants down!" Yugi suddenly yells out frustrated that his own grandfather didn't notice this the day he came home. But wait, he did notice, and Yugi pushed him away.
The female only says. "I call the police." Before walking out leaving Yugi and grandpa alone. Grandpa sits next to him, lays his wrinkled hand against his grandsons cheek. "Why didn't you tell me son?" his voice soft and gentle.
"I didn't want to appear weak like before grandpa, I wanted to show I could do it without Atem but I can't, they hurt me grandpa, the mentor took my duel deck while I didn't take it out, he gave me detention for being late in class while I was lost in the school and nobody was willing to show me the way."
"Oh Yugi, if only I knew, I know with Atem leaving you feel more lonely then before, but bottling it up isn't the way to cope with it, it only gives you more trouble. I can't afford a different school to send you to, and with you being expelled, what I must do now?" grandpa sights.
Yugi realises with him walking out class today and probably destroying the mentor's desk he made a huge mistake. But what about him? His hair is cut short, and he didn't even had the guts to look in the mirror to see how it looks now.
"When the police is gone we go to a barber, maybe he can do something about this bird nest they gave you, and Yugi, asking for help is never a shame, I thought that was something you did teach Atem, you told him yourself even males can ask for help when needed. I'm going to home-school you until I can afford a different school to send you to, I only want you to promise this old man, for as long as I'm walking on this planet, please dear boy, talk."
Yugi nods his head and promises grandpa. When a male and a female officer walk inside. This is going to be fun.
