"Okay Atem, you did well today, I think within a few weeks you're strong enough to go home with your grandmother." The therapist tells the young man after an hour walking at the bars, cycling on a bike, flexing his muscles, followed by the massages all in order to regain strength in his muscles again.
"Thank you." Atem sighs relieved his training is finally over. "I still can't believe they wanted to kill me when I fell in that strange coma, do they know the reason already?" Atem asks after every visit, and every time he gets the same answer.
"Sorry, you are the classical special case as they like to call you, how is it possible a completely healthy young man suddenly falls in a coma and wakes up two years later, I am afraid to tell you, but I think these questions will stay unanswered, you can indeed be lucky your grandmother wanted to save your life, that she believed in your recovery. Now I think your dinner date just arrived young man, remember keep practicing every day listen too your body, and I see you in two days." The therapist says and waves towards the young man's grandmother.
Taking his crutches he hobbles towards his grandmother who is waiting patiently outside with the wheelchair, he hates the wheelchair, but is glad he can use it know, and also he is glad the strength in his arms is returning rapidly. "Hello grandma, how was your visit with my new friend?" He asks eager to meet Yugi soon.
"The boy was asleep, but I spoke with his grandfather for a bit, the boys grandfather definitely wants to meet you honey." She says with a smile but looks worried wondering if the elder man truly does eat as he had promised her.
Atem knowing the worried look in his grandmother's eyes, forms a plan in his head and then says. "Hey what if we buy extra dinner on the go and visit them, I'm sure he enjoys the company during dinner, and you can be sure his grandfather truly eats."
"That's a good idea, my, my two years in coma and still knowing me like an open book." Atem's grandma giggles. "Well when you told me a few days back you found my significant I knew you still have it, but what if he isn't him?" Atem asks a bit worried while he sits down in the wheelchair.
"Oh believe me honey, he is, and I truly do believe his grandfather will accept you like I do. But from what I have heard the boy now only speaks Japanese, do you think you still have it? That your old pharaoh's soul knows it when you see him?"
"I don't know grandma, when I see him I indeed will probably know, for now it sounds like gibberish to me." Atem says while his grandmother pushes him forward to the restaurant, they buy two hamburger meals and two sushi meals for on the go, and while Atem holds the food in his lap together with his crutches, Amara pushes him to the ward where hopefully the boy he dream about lays. Atem is a bit surprised the boy is on the same ward he is. Is he really in such a bad shape he needs to stay longer than usual?
"Oh honey, his hair looks different than how you described me, sadly his teacher cut it in a terrible way, poor boy he was terrified to go home and show his grandfather what was happening with him during his first week on the school." Amara says.
"Don't worry grandma, hair always grows back it was his eyes that caught me in my dreams, and maybe I can use my skills to fix his hair to a nice cut." Atem feeling how his grandmother lays her hand on his shoulder and softly squeezes him, he knows she is proud at him, and he love her not only for saving his life were his parents failed him, but also helping him understand his dreams.
In front of a door she turns he sees it's three doors away from his room, he takes the liberty to knock on the door and when they hear a enter Amara opens the door and pushes him inside.
The elder man sitting at the bed looks surprised when he sees who are coming in the room, Atem sees the elder has some recognising in his eyes, and he also looks familiar towards Atem, the elder turns then to the bed and says towards the person in it. "Looks like you are going to meet your new friend sooner my boy." In English, should the kid be alright with his language again?
"How is he doing mister Muto?" Amara asks.
"Please call me Solomon, and the language is back it was as soon as he woke up about 15 minutes ago, he doesn't remember what happened the past week, and he is a bit grumpy because the nurses don't serve hamburgers. So now he is on hunger strike and refuses the dinner the nurse wants him to eat, which means he basically he has an empty stomach." The elder man chuckles.
"Grampa in Japan they always gave me what I wanted when I was hospitalised." The boy in the bed grumbles.
The elder woman also chuckles, knowing how stubborn her own grandson can be when it becomes dinner. "Well then it's good we brought extra grandma says cheerful, and in a way Atem could hear her talking the same way when his grandfather was still alive. "My grandson was eager to meet you, so he offered to bring food for you also. I hope you like sushi Solomon?" she says taking the offer to call him with his first name gladly.
"I love sushi, but didn't eat it since this one here doesn't like fish dishes that much." Solomon says pointing to the boy in the bed.
"Grandpa!" the boy in the bed squeaks and is obviously embarrassed. Atem noticed it's the same voice from his dreams, but now the face. He prepared himself to see the black eye as his grandma described him and prepares himself to see the haircut the boy is given roughly by his own teacher, but if Atem remembers the eye colour correctly he knows for sure it's him. His grandma wheels Atem over to the bed, takes the two sushi dishes and goes sit with mister Muto at the table.
"Hello, my name is Atem, I hope you like hamburgers." Atem says looking up to the boy, his haircut indeed is terrible, you can see it clearly was some kind of revenge action, if he can go out bed he makes a mental note to ask if he can try to make it nicer for him since he did cut the hair from his family when he was already at the young age of ten, under the boy's right eye you see a clear blue spot, a small tube goes into his left nostril, probably to help him breathing, but why? That he can't understand yet.
Then Atem lets his eyes wander to the boys his eyes however, he has his eyes closed. Damn!
Yugi looks like he is in pain, and obviously tries to calm it down. Then Yugi takes a deep breath. "Sorry, I made a wrong move a bit too fast." He whispers and then slowly opens his eyes. A little dull amethyst eye colour comes from under those lashes, and Atem knows it's him. He is the boy from his dreams since he woke up from his coma.
"My name is Yugi, he says softly, and yes, hamburgers are my favourite if they leave the shallot off." Yugi says and as far as his cheek allows him he smiles brightly.
"Then I remembered correctly." Atem whispers and hands Yugi his share. They eat together and do a little small talk when the elders leave the room for a walk and give the boys the liberty to know each other better.
Yugi looks with curiosity towards Atem, and it looks like he wants to ask Atem something but somehow is scared to do so. Atem showing his most charming smile towards Yugi and says. "Let's make a deal, if you want to know something just ask, if I want to answer I do, if not I say no. and you do the same. I won't bite and you look way to cute to bite." Atem shows his trademark smirk towards Yugi, and Yugi looks in a way a bit insulted, but if Atem does remember his dreams correctly, Yugi is a very forgiving person.
And Atem was right, the insulted look turns into a bright smile, and then Atem sees him thinking about his offer. "Do you have contacts? Or are they truly this crimson?"
"I can assure you, my eyes are as crimson red as you see them, and as the doctors al state in this hospital, they are one of a kind, do they scare you?" Atem ask a bit curious.
"No, most people probably would think you are scary like the devil, but my friends and I had many adventures together, with many dangers, I can assure you, my friends and I are not so fast scared when we are together." Yugi response with brave but also sad eyes.
"Where are they?"
"Back home in Japan, I miss them terrible." Yugi sobs and start to stream down his cheeks.
Atem doesn't know why, but he has the sudden urge to give the boy comfort and in an instant he sits next to Yugi in the bed and closes his arms around the sobbing boy. "I understand your pain Yugi, I also lost my friends when grandma needed to flee with me to save my life. Please let me be your new friend. I want to know you Little One."
When Yugi calmed down he slowly nods. "I don't know why but you're eyes remind me of my closest friend, he passed away a month ago, you even share the same name, I don't understand. I feel like I lost a big deal of my memory, even my friends faces are gone. And I saw them last week when grandpa and I took off towards here."
"Well, I have dreams about a boy with beautiful amethyst eyes with blue sparkles in them, we had many adventures together, and if I'm correct then I know you are that boy, but I also have a gap in my memory, why don't we work together to get both our memory back?"
"I would love that. But how?" Yugi whispers, and he buries his head in Atem's chest. The strain on Yugi's new lung is getting him and he hisses hoping Atem doesn't hear him, but Atem can't be fooled quickly. "We figure that out later, for now I call a nurse, you are in pain and obviously need meds." Atem says softly and press the nurse's button.
"Will you stay?" Yugi asks softly
"If they let me beautiful amethyst." Atem says softly kissing the boy on his head.
"Thank you my dark crimson." Yugi response back and leans into Atem his chest.
Outside the room two elder people are looking in the little window from the door, glad the developments between their grandson's looks like they are long-time friends. No like long lost lovers, but never really lost each other. They see how smitten both boys look towards each other.
Seeing the boys are fine they now really take off for a stroll with Solomon telling Amara about how Yugi completed the millennium puzzle two years ago, how he had adventures with his friends and how they finally could send the spirit of the puzzle back to the afterlife and how much it pained Yugi to see the one he started to love more then just a simple friend or crush move on to the ancient Egypt.
Amara tells on her turn how Atem was a completely healthy boy fell suddenly in a coma during the start of his P.E class, they were teaming up for dodgeball he walked to the team he was chosen to and fell, he was completely unresponsive to everything and everyone there. She tells how his parents decided they would pull the plug after half a year which his grandmother refused and fought against, and when it was save and she had made the necessary arrangements to transfer her grandson to America she left.
How he suddenly after being two years completely unresponsive woke up a month ago and started babbling about a boy with the most beautiful amethyst coloured eyes which had blue sparkles when he was exited and simply had fun, his name Atem couldn't remember. How he was speaking about the dreams he still was having and trying to understand.
Both elders realise it was fate with what happened to their grandsons in the past, they believe Atem's soul as pharaoh was reborn in Amara's grandsons body but was probably got pulled away when Yugi completed the puzzle shortly after he turned 15. And the soul returned when pharaoh Atem was send to the afterlife, but was somehow transferred back to the then still comatose boy.
They also realise both boys need to help each other in order to gain their memory back and that is only possible if they grow to the hip as soon as possible just as Yugi and pharaoh Atem did when they were looking for the pharaoh's lost memory. They took this as a silent agreement together.
When they had told each other about and their ideas about their grandson. They started to make arrangements for a lawsuit against the school. Even if it was the cheapest school in the neighbourhood, they needed to treat the children with respect. And the children who abused Yugi, well they also would not be taken away lightly.
