Chapter 5: The call from old friends.

Atem and Yugi became friends quickly, and at some point the nursing staff decided to move Atem to Yugi's room because they found Atem since the day they were introduced to each other sleeping there more than in his own bed. The fact both boys are on the same ward for long term patients, gives Atem the perfect opportunity so sneak out his room at night. Yugi is on this ward because of his new lung which can still be rejected by Yugi's body, and whenever he makes a wrong move he needs to hold his breath in order to sustain the pain, and Atem because he was in coma for two years and needs to do allot of therapy to get his strength back.
Yugi is after two weeks only laying down or sitting up with the support from the bed now slowly allowed to sit up without the help from the bed but he is still in allot of pain, his cheekbone is luckily recovered but you still can see the yellow and greenish colour.
Atem is working hard also to get his strength back so he can leave the hospital, and both the therapist, the staff grandma and even grandpa are holding him back so he does not overdue himself.
Grandpa took the liberty to home school both boys at the same time, he noticed that missing two years didn't affect Atem in the slightest, Atem is like Yugi a quick study and picks up the lessons very easy. Like Yugi, Atem listens with his soul when grandpa tells about the history from the ancient Egypt and sometimes even corrects the elder if he realises it isn't correct. What also prove the two elders theory about Atem truly being the old spirit from pharaoh Atem 3000 years ago.
Both boys also took very soon the liberty to call the others grandparent grandma or grandpa freely, which both elders accepted gladly. The boys both also noticing how the elders are growing towards each other in an intimate way and even support their new found relationship and hoping they will move in together very soon.
And today, only 14 days after Yugi was hospitalised, grandpa walks in to give the boys their daily lessons, but starts with a. "Hello boys, Yugi I can cancel our rooms in the motel my boy." The elder says exited. "And the best part is the place we are going to live in gives me enough space to let you go to one of the better schools. They are known to have a strong anti-bully program, they know you have a strange hairdo and even if they think you need a councillor for when you feel troubled they will offer it to you. They know you're in the hospital now and will welcome you as soon as you leave the hospital."
"Whoa that's amazing grandpa!" Yugi shouts out exited throwing his arms in the air but must back down because his lung is protesting from the sudden unpleasant movement. "Ah, this really sucks." He says softly placing his hand against his fixed ribs. Glad he doesn't need to suck his breath to help reduce the pain but still.
"You need to be careful Yugi, having a new lung in a body what still can reject it can be dangerous, and I don't think they can offer you a new lung this fast so they will give you a pig lung." Atem scolds when he hobbled inside the room tired from his therapy session and the walk from the ward to and back the therapy room, he knows better to ask grandpa if he can come and get him, but he is a stubborn kid.
"Oh shush you, don't cry tonight because you overdid yourself again." Yugi scold back to him.
"Look at you two, you know each other two weeks and already act like a married couple." Grandpa scolds.
"But we're not married grandpa." Yugi says but somehow feels the connection he and Atem share is already beyond friendship, he realises he loves Atem in a different way then he loves his friends. Is he gay? The boy wonders himself. "When can I go home grandpa?" he asks pushing his pink glasses aside.
"When you don't need to gasp for air because it hurts Yugi. Atem is right having a new lung and the repair of your ribs needs time to adjust." Grandpa says. "Also we need to get you to a barber soon, the way your hair grows now looks ridicules, it's becoming a real bird nest, and I miss your spiky hair." Which saddens Yugi more, and it isn't going unnoticed by Atem.
"Maybe I can help grandpa, I always did my family's hair before I ended in a coma. That is if you trust me Yugi." Atem says.
"I trust you, and if it doesn't go well the first time, well you can practice on me, but please, I don't want to be bald, I'm afraid to count the scars and then knowing how many times grandpa dropped me when I was a baby what prevented me growing." The youngest boy jokes.
"Yugi! I was a very caring grandpa for you! If I truly did drop you, then it would be one time." grandpa scolds and soon starts laughing with the two boys. He knows Yugi loves to joke around and he knows Yugi doesn't mean what he just said.
When they are finished laughing Atem takes a few deep breaths before saying. "Okay, I will ask grandma if she can take along my barber stuff tonight when she come visiting us, and we do it tomorrow after lunch, the nurses will be cleaning our beds then so you need to stay in the chair for a bit."
"And how much do you charge Atem?" Grandpa asks because he feels the boy doesn't need to do it for free."
"Well since I need to practice to see if I still got it, and Yugi offers himself to be my guinea-pig, it's free of charge." The boy smiles.
"Well then it's settled, time for your lessons kids, today on the program, math." Grandpa says and both boys groan.
The sound of snipping is to be heard in the room, the nurses look in awe how Atem is taming the terrible coupe ravage from Yugi into a nice looking coupe fit for this young boy's age. Yugi asked if Atem could trim his hair so it would grow to his usual star shaped coupe, but Atem tells him with how short Yugi's hair is on some places now it would look terrible. He also promises the boy if the hair is long enough he will trim it to it's usual shape.
Yugi can only smile to that, he misses his old coupe, but he is glad Atem is willing to help him for free, and he is honest before making the ravage even worse were most barbers only get their money out.
The phone on Yugi's nightstand suddenly rings, Atem stops for a moment to gather Yugi's phone and when he gave it to Yugi he continues the trimming. Yugi thanks Atem and looks to the caller id. "Atem, it's Joey, he wants to video call, I don't want him to see me like this." Pointing to his head and face.
"Then swipe it off and send him a text that your camera is broke, if he truly is what you told me he will understand." Atem says with a smile. Yugi slowly is getting his memory back, and shares his adventures with Atem. And from what he heard, Yugi's friends are very loyal, he hopes he can meet them soon.
He sees Yugi doing as he just said but continues his work, a few more lost strands and Yugi looks presentable again, he thinks proudly about his result.
The phone rings again and Yugi swipes the phone and presses to loudspeaker.
Phone call:
"Heya Yuug, you're on speaker because the others are also here." Joey shouts exited happy to hear his best friend again.
"Hey guys how are you all?" Yugi asks also exited but his friends miss the obvious sheer in the boys voice that he usually has.
"Were fine Yugi, listen we can't talk for long, but we have some amazing news for ya buddy." Honda says.
"Oh? What's that guys?"
"Well, Joey's dad is transferred to America, he will be joining you within a month. And in two months, Honda and I follow you because our parents also are transferred!" Anzu says exited.
"Whoa! That's amazing guys, then you can meet my new friend, he is dying to meet you all!" Yugi shouts exited which makes Atem chuckle.
"Well we will see you soon, I text you the date when I'm coming over, need to go bye buddy!" Joey says before clicking off the phone.
Phone call ends:
The youngest looks up and Atem sees the blue sparkles in his eyes. Right now he nearly dies because he wants to kiss those beautiful gems.
Atem loves how they look, he remembers it from his dream and when he saw the sparkles the first time was when they placed Atem's bed into his room and the nurses told them they would be roommates. He wishes he could make this boy his, but does not know where this boys preferences go to, if he only knew.
Atem is gay he knew it from a very young age already, and his grandmother knows, he was still a little boy when he told his grandmother and parents when he would be a big grown up, he would marry a boy, his parents shrugged it off as a phase he needed to pass.
The big grown up was a little downer, because at the length of 158 cm he stopped growing, but the fact he wants to marry a boy and love him like a man loves his wife always stayed around.
Maybe that's the reason why his parents didn't want to save him two years ago, it saddens them, he loved both parents till no end, and they do this to him. Looking to Yugi's haircut he sees he is ready, he lays his scissor on the table and with his head down he walks to the bathroom.
Yugi who saw Atem checking him over didn't miss the sad glint in the elder's boy eyes and notices Atem hobbling to the bathroom with hanging shoulders and head to the floor. The nurse also sees what just happened, she forces him to go after Atem, and she would take care of the loose hairs in the room.
As quickly as his lung allows him he walks to the bathroom, knocks on the door but when he receives no answer he lays his hand on the knob and opens the door. Seeing Atem sitting on the floor knees pulled up and his face buried in them, Atem is clearly sobbing.
Yugi walks over and with a little difficulty he sits down next to Atem, laying his arm around Atem's shoulder the elder sees his chance to bury his face in the younger's chest, in between his sobs Yugi hears the words "stupid parent's" and "don't love me". He needs to think how he can help his friend and wait until Atem is calmed down.
"I don't know which situation is worse. Knowing my dad ran away when he learned using no condom has consequences if you don't want kids yet, and the loss of my mother when I was only five years old. Or knowing your parents were willing to kill you when you still had a chance to waking up, when you know them for 16 years. I believe in both cases it's horrible to know." Yugi says. "I wish I could help you with this pain Atem, but yours is different than mine."
"Like you said, both cases are horrible, your father didn't want the responsibility and your mother died at young age. You turned out an orphan very young. I basically became one when they abandoned me"
"No, we are not orphans, you still have grandma, and I still grandpa. They made sure our lives would be comfortable, secure and save. I don't need my dad, because grandpa is my dad." Yugi whispers sweetly.
"Thank you Yugi that means allot to me. Let's see the mirror, and then get you back to bed huh?" Atem says clearly cheered up by his little friend. He pushes himself up to the wall and then carefully pulls Yugi up. He supports Yugi to the mirror and for the second time since he is in the hospital Yugi looks.
He sees the boy, his eye is no longer purple and bruised, but yellow greenish, he tries not to look at it, but looks upwards, his hair, he has a nice cut, and Atem made good use of his thick hair to cover the places his teacher trimmed him a bald spot, he even sees the natural purple lining in his black hair and how his blond bangs are now short and spiky, it isn't his, but it looks nice enough for him to walk around freely without shaming himself to death. "Thank you Atem." The boy whispers in awe suddenly feeling tired.
Atem who sees it supports Yugi back to his bed, helping the boy in it and cover him up. He realises Yugi probably needs more time to recover and has the possibility to stay longer than himself if he doesn't slow down with his eagerness to go home and see the store his grandmother opened up. He makes a promise to himself to slow down, so he and Yugi can leave the same day.
He also hopes they do something about that school and those bully's.
